The Soul #1

Angel Eyes

Rate this book
My name is Ria. Like Leah, but with an R? My life is pretty normal, I guess. I’m a waitress at the one and only Mexican restaurant in my tiny little no-Starbuck’s town, I live in a fairly typical studio apartment, and I people watch at the local bar in my spare time.

Well, I guess normal isn’t quite the right word. After all, normal people can’t control other people’s emotions with just a touch. Tantalizing pleasure, exhilarating joy, even paralyzing fear—I can make you feel it all, or I can take it all away. Drain you of every single emotion.

I try really hard not to, though. Normal, remember?

But things start to go from almost normal to straight-up bizarre when not one, but four insanely gorgeous men stumble into my life. And if you thought I wasn’t normal, these guys have me beat any day.

They aren’t even human.

A slow burn reverse harem fantasy romance.

D.S. O'Neill is a pleasantly abnormal single mother of a fabulously wayward daughter who has been an avid fan of reading and writing since the tender age of 6, when she used to sneak home Goosebumps books because "kid books are boring". Born in Phoenix, AZ, she now resides in the beautiful state of Washington, with the mountains in her backyard and the ocean at her front porch. In her spare time, she reads (of course), and watches Supernatural obsessively.

I don't really know how I feel about this book. It is really a toss up for me because I kept changing my mind from it's boring to ooooh and ahhh to ugh really to okay i'm bored again. I put myself through an annoying feeling roller coaster ride and I wanted off. I just wanted to pick yes or no to liking it.

Angel Eyes is a reverse harem kind of book. The MC, Ria, was sort of okay to me. She didn't really blow my mind nor did I feel instantaneously connected to her character. As for the gorgeous men in her life, I could take them or leave them.

Now I've read my fair share of reverse harem books. Trust me, I really have. They are sort of my secret guilty pleasures, well one of them. Maybe I have way to many secret (but not really secret) guilty pleasures because I usually say they are one in a review. Le Sigh!

Well, Angel Eyes just wasn't the harem for me maybe? Or maybe I just sort of have a high expectation for them now since I've read so many different versions. I have no idea. I really have no clue - all I know is that this book was just meh to me. I put it down a lot and either did something else (like read another book or idk do actual work while at work). The point is I put this down without a second though and carried on with my life.

Overall, this book was okay. I don't think I'm going to give book two a chance or not. Maybe one day.

This has the potential to be a really good book / series, but the author needs to go back and flush out the story / characters before it can be anything other than mediocre.

This is your typical paranormal where the girl knows there is something different about her but she doesn't know anyone else paranormal and ends up thrust into the thick of it with those who are much more in the know than she is, who discover she is super powerful and help protect her from the evils who want her. Angel eyes follows the formula for this style book to a t, but does so by just hitting those points without any development.

Spoilers ahead.

You are introduced to Ria, a 20 year old who lived her life in foster care. She is presented as this tough, take care of yourself but with a kind heart to the less fortunate kind of girl, so it's shocking when this street smart young woman decides to go home with a stranger who helps her when she was attacked in alley, an attack she totally has under control by the way.

She is suppose to just sense upon this second brief meeting with her strange, hot hero that there is something different about him, so you, throwing all sense of self preservation and street smarts that have previously been attributed to her character, she follows him home for answers. Yeah that would happen.

Once at his home, Ria discovers everyone is gorgeous, one of the gorgeous guys is in charge, one is an ass, one is sensitive, and one is the jokester. Then, she is magically bonded and attached to them, not as in magic happens, but within two minutes of meeting/arguing/playful banter they suddenly have the camaraderie of those who have known each other for weeks and have developed the bonds of friendships with will lead to more. Then, within minutes of arriving at the home, she is attacked, saved by the guys, and finds herself waking up in their place totally not at all concerned that she was attacked and just spent the night with a group of strange men, who oh yeah, reveal their super natural identities which she immediately accepts.

Now that they are all so close, she doesn't ask to go home, or you know continue on with her life while she muses over the last night's events, no, she agrees to fly off to another state with one of the strange men to get her records from CPS, which are not sealed like closed adoption records because she wasn't adopted, she was in foster care, where she is again attacked, and the quality of the guys she has aligned with put in question, but she still cares for them.

Back home with the guys, because she has moved in now, you know after a day of knowing them and without any conversation like hey you keep getting attacked and it's not safe for you to be alone right now, you should stay with us while we figure things out, nope just a I live here now, Ria bounds with Mr. Asshole, and they go from at each other's throats to banter with an underlying sexual tension.

Cue the fight over you haven't told me everything you may have suspected or figured out about me. I mean it's been less than 48 hours, but they totes should be completely open books of free flowing trust amongst one another at this point. Duh. Oh and guess what happens, the third attempt on her life, where she is offering herself to save her guys. HER GUYS. They've known each other for less than 48 hours.

Did you read to this point in the review? Congratulations, you just read the book minus the fluff. The story literally jumps and is this jagged. The fluff makes the story, the fluff is good. I want the fluff fluffier. I want the story to move smoother. I want the author to take the time to develop the relationships so it makes sense that Ria is feeling protective, that is makes sense that she and Mr. Asshole have come to a mutual understanding that shifts from hate to something knew, but it's just not provided.

I'm going to try book 2, because like I said, the potential for the story is there, but the development of the story leaves a lot to be desired.

Great book, formatting sucks though

Let me start off by saying, I am a super harsh critic of all the books I read—even the one’s I love. I would normally rate this book a two given what I read, but there were some genuinely hilarious moments, the story was great, and the characters so refreshing that I couldn’t give it that score. Short point: read this book and get excited for the next installment!

First, what I disliked about this book. The biggest being the formatting of the book as a whole. I don’t know if this was intentional or an error with uploading to amazon, but it needs to be fixed pronto or at least in the next addition to the series. There is zero reason why the paragraphs are indented as far as they are nor why there’s the spacing between every single paragraph. There is also an excessive—and usually erroneous—use of “...” it should be “. . .” And because it had been used so often, it lost its effect. I find it odd that the author mentions pronouns, etc. throughout the book, yet messes that up. There were a few spelling errors but they weren’t too distracting apart from the word “cough” instead of “couch.” The book is also super short and because of it I feel/felt that certain moments/events in the book lacked the depth they needed and deserved. Not to mention getting to know the mc’s better. Very fast paced in that regard, which like I said, unfortunately made the story suffer.

Now onto what you REALLY want to know about the book. The characters are wonderful and I genuinely laughed at several moments in the book. Specifically, I LOVED the moments between Rita and Tallen. Please include more of their witty and wonderful dialogue in future books. Was super refreshing dialogue might I add. Generally, RH books tend to have witty banter that only has to deal with sex/situations relevant to that, however, this books thankfully did not stick to that trope. Let me say it again, thank you for that! On my kindle app on my phone pgs. 583 (23%) and 1839 (87%) we’re particularly hold your tummy inducing. It may have to do with reading this at an ungodly hour but, it was so good. Like I said before, this story is 5-Star worthy with more attention spent on length of the story so that the events/good moments of the book have more time to develop and not be rushed through. I’m not sure if this is due to being a new author or not (didn’t double check), but keep it in mind for the future. The characters in this story were awesome. Just hands down, awesome. More development could be done, but that leads into my previous point. I will say that the mfc is walking the borderline of becoming a Mary-Sue if you’re not careful. The nuts and bolts of the characters is intriguing and pretty darn cool—just lacked the depth I was looking for, especially in book one.

I would recommend you read this book, even with the things I disliked about it, because the story and dialogue itself are quite good. As I mentioned before, I am quite a harsh critic, but I’m honest about what I read and try to provide not only future readers what they need to know/beware of—but also so the author can see what went wrong and how it could be more enjoyable to the reader. Hope this helps y’all and happy reading!

I'm a massive fan of nephilim/angles related books and I'm always looking for something new to read in that department. And when I do find a book like that, I'm automatically prepare to like it and am more inclined to close my eyes on some of the misgivings that would have otherwise bothered me. So you understand that I don't mean it lightly when I say that I found this one to be absolutely ridiculous. And it's not even the plot, really, that was more or less okey. There were even times when I caught myself enjoying the read. I would have probably even liked it, if not for the characters, their personalities and their unrealistic (and at times plain stupid) actions.
Let's start with the main heroin. Ria is a former foster kid who was abused a lot as a child and had to grow up early. She's (supposedly) independent, used to taking care of herself and isn't in the habit of asking for or receiving help. At least, that's how she's outlined at the beginning. In reality, I found her to be condescending, overly dramatic and completely opposed to how she describes herself. For someone who doesn't trust easily, she was exceptionally quick to go home with a stranger in the middle of nowhere, tell him and his "brothers" all about herself, her past and her abilities and then agree (not that anyone actually asked her) to go dig deeper into her history. Also, for being all so independent, she hasn't once protested to staying at the guys house for a few days, to using their jet, or to accepting their help. Those things weren't even discussed, it's like it was a given.
Also, Ria jumped out of a moving car because she saw a phone booth and needed to make a call? Way to be over dramatic, not to mention exceedingly stupid! Why not just ask the driver to stop the car instead of jumping out of it?!
The "connection" between her and the guys was simply there. She trusted them off the bat, never questioned their motives or anything. Her relationship with Tallen is another matter all together. Throughout the book (which is like 48 hours for them) the two of them hate each other, but then suddenly she's crying over his body like the love of her life just died. What's up with that? Could you be at least a little realistic?

This turned out to be way longer than I planed, so I'll just stop here and say that the likelihood of me reading any follow ups for the story is slim to none.

Wow for Ria!

Ria is a new breed for sure. Fallen seems to be kind of a kindred spirit for her and the others are just protectors. This first book seems to just be the start of Ria's story with the guys. Maybe a fact finding mission sort of thing. They are learning about each other more than anything. I like that the group, or really none of the group jumped right into the sex thing.
The ending is brutal though because book 2 doesn't come out until March 2018!

The first scene that earned a reaction from me was when thickheaded heroine walked into a questionable bar, knowing what and who are likely to be there. I mean, hot 20 year old girl in the middle of shady, shabby bar? Not too long after walking into it, heroine gains herself one lowlife drunk-o, of course. I think I'm getting the hang of this...(don't worry. be patient, unlike me. this will actually get better.)

Fast forward to Cade stepping in...so while I was continuing reading on, I kind of had side thoughts about Ria's personality...and maybe her mental state. Because I realized, that this recklessness, was probably a result to the terrible incidents in her life leading up to now. She seemed like she had fewer fears than your average being. And wasn't that eerie enough? Indicating just how much more nightmare-ish Ria was compared to any other?

Imo, this read was some kind of an acquired taste. Not particularly unpleasant, just not something for me to insta-like. However, as I continue reading about these misfits, the more my interest in this, in them, grew. Tbh, I didn't have any character whom I'm favoring more. The heroes and heroine were a bunch of oddballs to me; at times they're funny and at times they're irritating. (shout out to myself: be more consistent please. do i like it or not?)

To answer my own question, if it came down it, I'd say I enjoyed this read and liked it a lot in the end. Almost begging for the next fix when I found out the cliffhanger. :(

I love a snarky heroine!

Ria is a down and out waitress simply trying to get through each day. Her rough past shaped who she has become, along with some interesting genetics. Her abilities have protected her, to some extent, as she got older but after an incident gone wrong she comes to the attention of 4 unusual individuals. They've banded together, against the rift that should divide them, to help keep the balance needed in the universe. After realizing that she is one of the unusual individuals a background check is necessary. What's in that folder leads to quite a surprise and with some sneaky, and creepy, individuals hanging about things start getting really interesting.

I can't get into much without some major spoilers and hope the review isn't so vague that it's a deterrent because this is most definitely worth a read. Not just sarcasm, but quick with and quirky banter abound. I would say a mild trigger alert for childhood abuse and alluded sexual abuse. Nothing in detail, just a brief sentence in passing, but it's worth mentioning for anyone sensitive to such issues. I really like where this series is headed and am enjoying the slow burn. With certain elements there's always a possibility the author jumps to insta-love but I'm happy to have the chance to get to know the characters better before romantic entanglements ensue.

Oh! My! Wow!

Ria has had a hard life.
Growing up with a mentally ill father, shuffling from one foster home to the next, and trying to make it as an adolescent on the streets has formed her into the woman she is today.
A take no sass, independent woman.
Having a hot stranger help you out with unwanted attention at the bar doesn’t exactly give her the warm fuzzies, well it shouldn’t at least.
But learning that he has an unusual power like yourself? That’s a little different story.
Ria finds herself hanging out with real angels and demons.
And they know exactly what she is.

If you like angels and demons, this book is for you.
If you like tough as nails women, this book is definitely for you.

This is a pretty quick read with only 11 chapters.
However those 11 chapters are filled with so much.
I absolutely adored all the characters and love how this will be a slow burn romance.

It does leave off on a cliffhanger.
Shame on you Dawn!
But I’m excited to see what will happen next.
I’ll be anxiously waiting for the next book to release so my heart can recover from the immense pain it feels from leaving these awesome characters.

I highly recommend this book to everyone!
Read it.
While it has some errors, they are no where enough to distract you from reading.

I loved it! Actually it was very close to 5 stars, but I decided to give less because it was really short (I prefer much longer books) and the usual reason - Ria just had to believe everything the guys said and trust them from day one. Seriously? You would think a girl with her history would have stronger survival instincts.

I laughed out loud more than a couple of times (such humor is just up my alley), the guys seem really sexy, are distinctive and likable characters. I hope that in the next book there will be more information about who they actually are.

I was not that much in love with the bad guy - Jerrick. I prefer when the bad guys are bad not for the sake of being bad, you know. There should be a reason, but maybe it was too early to know that.

So, great humor, okay plot and likable characters equal an interest in the next book :-)

My goodness that was an amazing read! I seriously couldn't put the book down I loved it so much. I loved Ria, she was very headstrong and kickass, she kinda had to be growing up the way she did. I loved her personality and how she really didn't take crap and gave back attitude. Now on to her guys, Cade was yummy and interesting, Dex was adorable, Jace the protector still needs to show a little more personality and of course there's Tallen, oh sweet Tallen. I really loved his personality and how him and Ria just clashed but also meshed with each other, I hate to pick favorites but he's top runner for my favorite. Also I have to say when is that next book coming out. you just can't leave me hanging on that ending! I need mooooorrreeeee!!!

This first book of the series.

Love Ria, such a kicka** heroine who is ballsy as hell. She has got a sharp tongue on her; oh man the scenes where she is putting people in their place is just amazing! Not to mention her otherworldly quirk.

I’m finding her little band of merry angels and demons to be intriguing, and I’m seriously looking forward to finding out what happens next. This book is so incredibly short, there wasn’t much time for character or emotional development. Still, the author does have a great start of creating an interesting storyline that left me curious for more.

Now I’m just left to figure out when the next book releases!

To be honest, I was not going to read this book. First because the amount of pages was too small. Secondly, it sounded like every other reverse harem story. Third of all, my daughter’s name is Angelize (Angel eyes) so I was afraid to read something that would taint my thoughts of her name. Lol. But, I have to say that I was surprised and actually glad to have read it. The writing was good. There weren’t any typos that I noticed and the story line kept me wanting to read. So for a one day read not bad. Can’t wait for book 2!

Brilliant however

I really did enjoy this book and is the start of a fantastic series however where is the 2nd it says it's meant to be released early march 2018 and here I sit on the 27th June 2018 and still no sign. And there doesn't seem to be a reason for it I understand something's release dates can get delayed but by nearly 3 months is a bit bad. Like I say it's the start of a fantastic series I love all the characters and the plot line I'm so disappointed to have to end it here .

Loved it!!

I loved this so much. Ria is a foul mouthed, brave and kick ass heroine. Her guys are hot alt humans that just want to protect her and take care of her. Ria is something the guys have never seen before and they go searching for answers. This book made me laugh out loud several times and the ending had me shouting for more. I am desperate for this the next one in this series. 💖💖💖

So good

What an amazing debut and start to this series. I loved everything about this book. The female lead is snarky and funny and just BA, the guys are well balanced. You've got your broody ahole, lighthearted funny man, strong protector and loving good guy. There's depth and backstory, secrets uncovered, and of course an evil villain. That ending, man, I was holding my breath on anticipation! I can't wait for what's next!

Angel eyes was a little different then I thought it would be. It’s well worth the read even if it is a short read. The only thing that I dislike about the book is the ending of the book itself, but honestly who ever truly wants the book to end. I’ll be waiting for the second book to this series and the many questions that I would like answered! This book Is a fun read for anyone who like feisty girls who doesn’t take crap from anyone.

A freaking mazing!

I love it! Plain and simple. The guys are all unique and different, between angels and demons. Love it all! I usually hate slow burn, by this is a book that doesn’t tease you to much and leave you hanging, it builds the relationship with the guys so that it’s more remembering that wham bam thank you ma’am .

Can’t wait for the next!

Angels and demons oh my!

Fun story. Loved the snarky, sassy and slightly vulnerable heroine. Understand this is part of a series, but was frustrated with short length and 0-60 character development. Also, the 3rd person voice was a little off putting. The storyline is fresh and fun and I look forward to seeing what happens to Ria and her rag tag band of angels and demons next!

Loved this. Gutted I have to wait to read the rest! Really get drawn into the story from the very start and Ria herself is a great main character; strong, independent, honest and funny. Would highly recommend this to anyone who likes well written, well rounded characters and a different take to the angels and demons side of fantasy novels.

Enjoyable.

Book 1 enjoyed... just about to read book 2...but to be honest by reading other readers views and ratings I am a bit concerned......the author by the sounds of it wants to sort herself out and get on with the rest of this series...I don't want to get engrossed in a series that is not ever going to get finished...the books are short for the money which is irritating in itself...but when you have to wait for forever to read the next installment then you start to lose faith in the author which no one wants...so please finish the series and keep your interest in it to the high standard of Angel Eyes...Thanks.

Oh hell no! You don’t start a new series off so short. Not one with angels and demons and a whole world of unknown. I was really taking off with this book and starting to get totally swept up in the events and then BAM it’s finished - and the next book has not been released yet. That is just ...wrong on so many levels. This book was all sorts of awesome. Easy to read, strong MC and the guys, well still a bit of mystery but they are worth getting to know. Come on March 2018.

3.5 - rounded up

I liked this book, but I didn’t LOVE it. That said, there is definite potential for the story to pick up in book 2.

Pros:
- entertaining
- I liked Tallen
- FMC is a smarta$$ with quick witted quips
- Some parts were quite funny

Cons:
- felt fast?
- more action was implied than actually happened.
- formulaic
- Lack of character development
- Cliffhanger (not really a con... but 🤷‍♀️)
