Fighting #1

Fighting for Air

Rate this book
Aubrey Pierce was shattered three years ago, when the man of her dreams warped her life into a nightmare. Bruised and broken, Aubrey turns to Mixed Martial Arts, finding comfort in the control as she begins piecing herself back together. Just as she gets her feet on solid ground, she begins training at a new gym under a new trainer. This man brings with him a past dark enough to match hers, and just enough sexual tension to keep things interesting. Running on coffee and trust issues, Aubrey must confront the complicated question that haunts many survivors of domestic Can I love again? Caden Larson is raising his two sisters on his own, giving up his one shot at a contract to fight professionally in order to keep the family together. Between grave site visits, shifts at the police department, and trying to get his sister to dance lessons, Caden is stretched thin. Staying true to who he is, he still can't say no when his best friend asks for a favor. The last thing he needs is to train a girl full of ice and anger, especially when she starts to burrow under his skin. Over time, the girl that drives him wild with irritation starts to drive him wild in a few more interesting ways, and Caden is faced with the possibility that, for once, maybe he should be a little selfish. Told from both Caden and Aubrey's perspective, Fighting For Air is an exhibit on how two people can heal when they fight their demons together. This novel has adult content that includes, but is not limited to, drug abuse, coarse language, and physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Fighting For Air is book one in a planned series. Book two will be available Summer 2018!!

I will admit... this book got me hooked and I read it from beginning to end. However, it went on and on. I understand that Aubrey was hurting and mentally not of sound of mind. Caden just took it. All the hurt they caused each other back and forth. She even went back to her ex and cheated on him, and Caeden still wanted her back. It seemed like what she went through with Elliot was what she eventually started to do to Caden, minus the physical abuse. She strung him along because she knew he wouldn't leave her. Therefore, when he started pushing back and didn't take her back when she was ready to be with him... I was actually kind of proud of Caden for standing his ground, even though he was miserable the whole time.

I will say this book does make you understand the consequences of abuse. It isn't just the physical abuse that hurts... it is the verbal manipulation that is scary too. Aubrey's fear of her ex was surmountable, but she also would go back to him to self-destruct. There was a lot of feeling in this book. A lot of sadness. But the characters came out of it in the end happy and trying to heal.

I enjoyed this story and the author's writing and would have given it four stars except there were SO MANY TYPOS! "Pay-per-view" was written as "paper view," not just once but every time; word spellings were mixed up, such as peaking instead of peeking; and there were LOTS of typos. In fact, there was one typo that completely gave away the plot twist (good thing I already figured it out). So sad; this would have really been much better if it had been edited because the excessive typos took me out of the story. Not sure if I'll be reading the second story or not because the plot itself was a bit predictable and I assume the second book will be as well.

Not sure how to feel

First off, there are a ton of errors amd this book desperately needs an editor. Yikes. That said, I both liked and hated the story. It is so obvious that Bree is still in love with Elliott. I felt bad for Caden until the way he handled things when he realized who Elliott was. I just can't figure out why Bree is still so desperate for Elliott. I'm going to read the next book but I know i won't like it because she's gonna get back with him and I just don't understand what the author is trying to do there.

Excellent!!

This story line transports the reader mentally and emotionally into a silent observer position. As you read you begin to experience Cayden/Aubrey's emotional investment and feel as though you are a part of what is being read. This first of the series will have you wondering..when will summer be here! So I can read the next book?! An easily relatable and engaging read that will have you laughing, crying and "feeling all the feels" and unable to put it down!!!!!!!

This ends on a cliffhanger which is tough because everything started working out well and as the end neared I just felt so anxious. The angst grew exponentially towards the end. Basically everything went to shit quickly for the characters.

The author is a little too long winded. The drama was dragged out with details. My anxiety for the characters made me anxious to get through the book. But that means the plot is good…. And it is. If you like angst.

An amazing first book!

I have to say that I was blown away! Taylor McNiff does a great job of pulling you into her world. I am anxiously awaiting the 2nd part of the journey between Caden and Bree.

Mixed feelings about this one. It felt really strange and superficial, but I had more connection to the characters. And the ending was pretty good even though I’m not a huge fan of the cop and drug dealing situation, let’s see how book 2 goes.

Three stars!

I liked the characters in this story, however the story was hard to get into. Also, the story just stopped with no ending at all.

Foreshadowing was great

The backstory was pretty intriguing. You start to connect the dots but seriously the next book is going to start with a bang.

Seemed promising but it fell really flat for me.
A lot didn’t make sense!
I couldn’t connect with the characters and I felt it ended weirdly!

Series, yea!

I really did enjoy the story. I'm sure you're aware of the "paper view" supposed to be "pay-per-view" mistake?! Looking forward to starting book 2 in the series!!

1 This book badly needed editing. "We watch the paper view's here", "I start walking forward, peaking over the edge."
2. I'm at 30% and nothing has happened and I'm starting to lose interest.
DNF at 33%
