Raga gazes down on the world from the backs of dragons as she visits each capitol and demands allegiance. Gouge finds employment as bodyguard to a wealthy SeaEnd merchant. Bast finds herself embroiled in palace politics when she unwittingly heals the Queen Mother of SeaEnd, and her brother, Bin, leaves behind the outside world to enter a spiritual one, devoting himself to the worship of Ashur by pledging his life at seminary. Billy and Ems study at Windham Keep, the world’s only college of Mages, blazing through established curriculum with ease. Thousands of miles away, the Gray Robes, also known as Bloodletters, practice their vile and self-destructive magic, expanding their armies as rapidly as they expand their magical might. Far to the south, Torqu Maz-Mal leads his horde of dead to the WealWood Tropics, site of ancient EmberEarth’s greatest battle, eager to rip more bodies from the ground to swell the ranks of his lifeless army.
The Witch Named Heretic takes place before the battle of Windham Keep at the end of book one: The EmberEarth Chronicles.
Follow Ems Fick, the most powerful Mage on all EmberEarth, as she travels halfway around the world to unravel the mystery of the BarrenWand and save her family, kidnapped by Bloodletters.
Matthew Bunch was born in a small town outside San Diego, California. The fourth of four children, Matt learned to read from an early age. Often found with his nose in a book, he’d resist when called to dinner and after hurriedly gulping the last bite, would quickly return to his books. He spent much of his youth at the library and the local librarians knew him by name, allowing him to check-out the same number of books as adults. He wrote his first short story when he was twelve. In high school an English teacher discovered his passion and pulled him away from the other students to pursue a syllabus designed specifically for him, reading one book after another and generating written reports of each.
Matthew’s imagination is boundless, creating multiple worlds for his friends to explore and hundreds of characters for them to meet. His interests range from Epic Fantasy to Science Fiction to the Supernatural, including Dark Fantasy like H.P. Lovecraft.
The EmberEarth Chronicles is Matthew’s first full-length Epic Fantasy novel, weighing in at five-hundred pages and covering much of EmberEarth.
The Witch Named Heretic is the second book in the series, with many more to follow.
The Boy Named Warlock is Book Three of the EmberEarth Chronicles.
A brilliant follow-up to EmberEarth. More about Ems, with a sprinkling of Billy, Neesa and Raga. Bloodletters and an ancient skeleton. Magic sprinkled liberally throughout. Great plot. Characters are developing beautifully. Great complications for Neesa and Ems. Don’t want to spoil it anymore. You do need to read EmberEarth first. Great fantasy epic. Five brilliant shining stars!
So happy to see the second book in this series which interestingly, takes place before the battle of Windham Keep at the end of book one. Nice that the Keep from the first cover is on this one. With just a turn of a page I was plunged into a gripping action scene with some favorite characters from the first book, Ems, Billy and Nesa. Magic and mystery is in abundance right from those first few pages and I found myself in familiar territory. With war on the horizon Em comes up against old adversaries who try a few new tricks to dissuade her from standing against them. Thoroughly entertaining story based primarily on these three characters with enough dragons and wizards to give me a true fantasy fix. Well done Mr. Bunch! I look forward to more in this wonderful series.
This is the second book in the "Ember Earth" series by Mr. Bunch and I have to say, I enjoyed it a great deal more than the first book; Not that the first book was bad, but this book shows marked improvement in style and approach - The prose is leaner, more mature and has more impact. It's a very enjoyable story with some very good fantasy concepts that I look forward to seeing explored further when he publishes his next volume. I highly recommend it. My only real complaint about it is that it wasn't longer - I was really getting into the story when it ended!
