The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because I’m looking for some of the basic “rules” of trimming-such as how to form pads, or rules of leaves opposite, or what isn’t correct in pruning-branches crossing over, or mistakes experts see. I understand it’s a personal thing, but I know there are so called rules of doing bonsai. Maybe a glossary? Otherwise, I really learned from this book. Thank you.
If you have no prior experience with plants, this is not the book for you. The author uses terminology expecting the reader to already understand certain things about plants. Pictures or diagrams would have helped a lot. I’d feel ripped off if I hadn’t read this book through Amazon Unlimited.

Mr. Hideyoshi is kind to beginners like myself. He refrains from jargon or defines it and includes helpful images to help make complicated concepts easier. I recommend this highly for anyone thinking about taking up bonsai.
This was my first bonsai book and it gave me a basic overview of styles of bonsai and types of plants. The rest were basics on care. A good first read.
