Tom and Stanley: Book One

Nothing bad is supposed to happen in Palm Springs.

At least that’s what San Francisco private detective Tom Danzel and his partner Stanley Korski believe. But when their friend Chris finds a dead body in his hotel room bed, Tom and Stanley drive out to help the local police investigate.

What they discover is a rather nasty green snake and an elegant hotel that offers delicacies not usually found on a room service menu. As the body count increases, the two detectives are going to have to rely on their skills and each other if they’re going to survive this very deadly kind of love.

Some explanations beforehand:

A Deadly Kind of Love (Tom and Stanley Book 1) is not a first book of a TOTALLY new series by Victor J.Banis. Did the names ring a bell? Yes, you haven't been mistaken. Of course not! Tom and Stanley. One of the most unforgettable couples that MM Romance genre can offer. The leading men and the main protagonists of Deadly Mystery Series. And A Deadly Kind of Love is actually the book#6 in this series. I ALWAYS welcome a decision to republish the good books that tend to fade into the background due to their earlier publication date, to give them a fresh look (or cover) to attract a new generation of readers, but I don't understand the decision in this case. Why to make the book#6 of a well-known series to the book#1 of a new series?

BUT. The fact that the only book in Deadly Mystery Series that I haven't YET read is the book#6 I PERSONALLY name a destiny. BOOK GOD exists. I should go to the nearest public library, a temple of Book God, and light a candle.

The reason WHY this book could be an opener for a new series, is probably because it is the first one that focuses less on Tom and Stanley relationship (they are an established couple now), but rather on the mystery itself. They work together as PI in their own business and appear to be the best detective candidates for a murder investigation in a gay resort. You can imagine what's going on here!

Though don't deprive yourself of a pleasure to accompany Tom and Stanley in their journey from the very beginning. They embody the most stereotypical ideas of a gay couple that an average reader of MM Romance genre dreams about, and I swear, I've never used stereotypes and clichés in such a worshipful meaning. Tom, a heart-breaker and womanizer (in the past), an attractive muscleman, who hasn't still used to his gay-ness (his only gay experience is Stanley, and it is nothing to do with him being gay, but with him loving ONLY Stanley). Stanley, a delicate openly gay ex-cop, an occasional drama-queen, who prefers to be rather an interior designer than a PI, who always gets into troubles and who can be already 100 times dead if not his personal lifesaver Tom.

If I have to describe this book in only one word, it would be FUN. FUN PURE. It is witty, funny, with an excellent ambience, great dialogues, without any doubt- brilliantly written. The best place to read it- a summer holiday and you with a book in your right hand and a cocktail in your left hand, enjoying a view at a pool bar.

I wish the author a lot of inspiration and excellent health in order he could go on with the series and give us many many new books in WHATEVER series he chooses- Deadly Mystery Series or Tom and Stanley series. The main thing - it will be about Tom and Stanley!

VERY RECOMMENDED.

Yay for Tom and Stanley as they take the lead in solving three murders at a gay inn at Palm Springs. This is the last book in the 'Deadly' series (unless the author writes another one). Stanley and Tom are now an established couple and also established detectives. As they get to the bottom of this crime we get to see them still deeply in love, but recognising that there is still much for them to learn about each other.

Tom is still very much the macho man and somewhat uneasy about being part of a gay community. Stanley is still very much the flamboyant ex-cop who would rather be a flamboyant interior decorator.

This story sees them staying at an extremely expensive gay hotel in Palm Springs where all is not what it seems and where death comes to ensure silence.

I really enjoyed this. As usual this is a good mystery story with lots of potential murderers, shifty and suspicious behaviour, unlimited wealth, prostitution dressed up as glamour and poisonous snakes. I liked the way the story kept me guessing whodunnit and why but I also enjoyed the underlying humour and the witty dialogue between characters. Most of all I loved Tom and Stanley. I would also really love another story with this duo.

The 6th book of the Deadly series, opens with Chris Rafferty (Tom and Stanley's friend) stumbles into a cold body on his bed, while he is staying at Winter Beach Inn, the gay inn, in Palm Springs. He quickly calls Tom and Stanley, so then the couple leaves to Palm Springs, in order to comfort Chris, while at the same time, trying to get around to gives a little extra help for the Palm Springs PD. Soon, bodies are piling up, secrets about the guests at the inn come to the surface ...

Mystery wise, I have a feeling of the murderer after several clues. But it is still enjoyable to read the detectives working the case. The part about knowledge of samurai is interesting. And the ending, WOW, Tom shows how he kicks ass ... he is like a warrior, charging ahead to save his lover, and my GOD, he is amazing!!

Apart from that, I also enjoy it simply for Tom and Stanley as a couple. This case happens in a gay inn, and there are few who try to get Tom's interest while he never understands why. Tom and Stanley are one of the most intriguing couple I've read in series. I cannot deny that Tom is straight and he never has any interest in any men ... except fo Stanley. He loves Stanley and he will do anything to protect him. It's probably an example of the saying that you cannot choose who you love.

I cannot say that Tom and Stanley are in the strongest time of their lives ... especially not after book #5 (where Stanley has that moment of doubt). But at the same time, I think they're getting to that point where (borrowing Stanley's own words), Tom is Tom, Stanley is Stanley, but at the same time, they're also TomStanley because they're together.

I definitely keep this series as one that I will religiously follow. So if there is a next book, I'm definitely in

A wonderful addition to the series. I was so immersed in the book, I wasn't aware I was nearing the end and when I reached the last page I actually groaned out loud. I didn't want to leave the guys.

As usual there were many funny moments. I laughed so hard when Tom wanted to order an extra rare steak. "Just slap the cow on the butt and send her in." :D It was great to see Tom and Stanley angst free. Although I can understand Stanley's fears. After all Tom was straight all his life and isn't attracted to men, only to Stanley. But I wish Stanley would let himself believe that Tom isn't going anywhere, he's in it for the long haul.

A Deadly Kind of Love is book 6 of the series The Deadly Mysteries. It can be read as a standalone.
Tom Danzel and Stanley Korski are two private detectives in San Francisco. They’re partners in life and at work. When Chris, one of their friends, calls them for help, they don’t hesitate to go to Palm Springs to investigate a murder case.
I liked this book; I liked it a lot.

Tom is an old-school man. He’s not talkative, but burly and very protective of Stanley. He’s an old-school cop also a kind of Dick Tracy. He’s also super straight, before Stanley, and even being with Stanley now, Tom isn’t really gay. And It’s funny to see how he tries to keep up with Stanley’s gay friends. Or Stanley.

Stanley is younger than Tom, not really cop material (even if he was a cop), he hates guns, not a real fighter, and he’s more cerebral actually. He’d also rather be anything except a cop or a private detective. But he loves Tom, and when Tom quit the San Francisco PD for him, Stanley couldn’t have refused to open their private agency.

I liked their duet; they were totally in tune.
The book was focused on the investigation and who the murderer was. It was funny and interesting to read, I liked how each time I thought of someone, bam, something happens and I was back to square one. The writing was fluid and dynamic, no boring moment or repetitiveness, I was in the story from page one and read the book easily.

Since it was book 6, and I didn’t read the 5 previous books (not yet). At first, I was a little scared of being lost in the story and the characters. Although that didn’t happen because the book can be read as a standalone easily. There’s enough information to understand who Tom and Stanley were and their past, but there’s not enough to spoil the previous books for you if you want to read them, like me now. I liked it, and I can read the previous stories now without them being spoiled.

The only thing that frustrated me a little bit was the absence of real sex scene. Since Tom is super smoking hot, I was super frustrated not to read a real sex scene. I need to really read the previous books, maybe I’ll be surprised…I’ll tell you.

It’s 4 OptimuMMs for Tom and Stanley

I loved reading Stanley and Tom's latest adventure. These two have been through so much since they got together and it was nice to see them happy and in love... and angst-free. They still have their moments of worry about the other and their relationship but really, doesn't everyone at one time or another? An all around entertaining, funny, sexy story. I'd love to read more Deadly Mysteries in the future although from what I've heard we may not get anymore Stanley and Tom adventures. Too bad!

6 Stars!

This 6th installment is the best so far. I enjoyed the Tom/Stanley interactions more than ever, no relationship angst this time. Tom is at his most charming and Stanley isn't doing anything to tempt himself.

The mystery was fun and, of course, well written.

Absolutely recommended.

Very good m/m mystery in which Tom and Stanley head to Palm Springs to help a friend who found a dead man in his hotel bed. I must confess that it was refreshing to read a nearly angst-free installment of their story!

Always good to have more Tom and Stanley, but there were a few points in this one where it got too nasty for me. I think I may have turned into a total wuss when it comes to horrific, bloody fictional killings.

Tom Danzel and Stanley Korski met as police detectives and eventually became private detectives. Stanley is young, gay and effeminate. Tom is older, brawny, scarred, and straight. They have a rocky and fragile relationship, but the one thing that keeps them together is love. At times it’s funny but also kind of sad, Tom believing he’s straight, having no desire for other men and not chasing women anymore since he and Stanley became involved. When Tom is in Stanley’s world, he’s uncomfortable and doesn’t fit in, and he knows it but does it for Stanley. Tom also has no idea when he’s being hit on or flirted with. Thank goodness Stanley has a sense for these things, as Tom gets into some real predicaments. They both know their relationship takes work; there is always temptation and a fear that it could just end.

When their friend Chris finds a body in the Alice Faye room at the Inn in Palm Springs, it appears the local PD’s hands are tied—the town’s residents are wealthy and don’t want the publicity of a murder. The Inn itself harbors pretty gay boys and older, wealthy men. What happens behind closed doors is definitely overlooked—except for the videos. Tom and Stanley find themselves in the lap of luxury at the Inn, but Tom pulls no punches; he sees the Inn as nothing but a whorehouse backed by some rich men. With snakes, the Yakuza, a wealthy Japanese business man, an annoying cowboy, autoerotic asphyxiation, and more bodies being discovered, Tom and Stanley get caught up in a complicated and dangerous murder case.

There’s a lot of suspense and danger, and Stanley gets to show off his dancing skills in a most interesting way. Victor J. Banis is an expert at bringing investigative techniques to a storyline along with action-packed fight scenes, but what really makes this story, and series, unique is Tom and Stanley’s fragile relationship.

Deadly Nightshade is the book that brought Tom and Stanley to life in January of 2009, and I am just too excited for the next books in this long-running series. I have so much respect and admiration for Mr. Banis’ work and hope he will continue to bring more of this series to us for a very long time.

I will be honest in saying that at first I was not enjoying this book. Or at least that was for the first couple of pages anyway and then after that something caught my attention and suddenly I was sucked into this mystery. Turns out that the excitement of this book ramped up tremendously throughout the read and I was hooked. I have not read the previous books in this series but that was not necessary either. I was not lost as to what was going on so I believe that it could be said that this book can be read as a stand-alone.

Tom and Stanley are partners in more ways then one. They used to be on the police force together and now they own a private detective agency. So when their friend, Chris, calls from Palm Sorings in need of their help they immediately go to his rescue.

Chris is staying at an exclusive hotel in Palm Springs and after returning from a night on the town, he finds a man dead in his bed. So of course he is going to call Stanley and Tom. What looks like a simple death by a snake bite turns into so much more....murder. As it is, this is not the last murder that Tom and Stanley are going to find in Palm Springs either.

What is really going on behind the dead bodies that seem to keep turning up left and right? Who is behind it and why? Can Tom and Stanley figure out what is going on before someone else is murdered or will one or both be next?

This was really a good read and I am glad that I read it. I will definitely read the next when it comes out. I am now a believer in these two men and look forward to whatever is going to come next for them.

This was a really good mystery, but I could have done it without all the evil oriental stereotype. I mean, seriously, it was like one of the characters was Fu Manchu.

Other than that, I enjoyed a lot the mystery part of the story, I was delighted that Chris played a bigger part on it and that I really can see, for the first time, that Stanley and Tom are aware that they have issues that they need to face if they want their relationship to last.

I think that this one the book I liked the most in the whole series, so there is hope *laughs* I must confess, these books are like fast-food: not really good, and yet, I can't avoid wanting it :P

Pas mauvais mais j’aurais sans doute plus apprécié le tome en lisant le début de la série... dommage d’avoir vu si tard que c’était un tome 6... et pas le 1er comme indiqué au départ 🙄

The 6th and possibly final in the Deadly series is a nail-hitting on the edge thriller.Stanley and Tom find themselves investigating a possible murder in Palm Springs after they get a call from mutual friend Chris. Chris is on vacation at an exclusive gay Inn, when he stumbles upon a dead body in his bed.Tom and Stanley drive from San Francisco to Palm Springs, sure they could go via plane, but since Tom was shot and has a metal plate in his hip (all thanks to Stanley's deranged late brother)they decide they don't want the hassle from TSA.Chris found a handsome young man cold stoned dead in his bed, at first it was considered a snake bite, but things including murder, can be decieving. The bodies seem to be piling up and Tom & Stanley realize they are facing a killer who loves to kill. I loved this mystery, and I love the relationship of Stanley & Tom...Tom still doesn't consider himself gay, sure he has sex with Stanley, shares a bed, home, and business with this man, but Tom feels that he shouldn't be labeled. Tom has only been with one man (Stanley ) and he was exclusively heterosexual and he still finds himself attracted to women. Tom, realizes he loves Stanley and it's his job to protect him.Stanley loves Tom but realizes it might not be as strong as the love Tom has for him.Stanley finds himself jealous of the attraction of other gay men and women have for Tom.Will these two make it in the long haul, we hope so....Another thing I must say is that I absolutely hate the cover art depiction of Tom & Stanley, in the first 5 mysteries published by MLR Press, we had Tom depicted as a handsome, strong in facial features, older if not in years, but by the harshness he might have witness that are all found on his face.Stanley, was found in that same cover art to be beautiful in a twinkish sort of way youthful, yet an intelligence in that brow. The cover art on Dreamspinner Press depicts Tom like a soap opera hunk, no lines of harsh reality on that face, in other words not the depiction of the Tom that I've come to know..Stanley as depicted in the cover art, looks like a goth drag queen...just another young twink with not a thought in his head.....in other words not the Stanley that I had envision.Those. are minor complaints I know, but I just hate that cover! At any rate, once you get past the cover, the mystery is just a fun read that I'm sad to see come to an end. because this might be the last adventure for Stanley &Tom...still its's an adventure worth taking!

Ahhh, Love. This book was so incredibly romantic. I needed some kind of reassurance after the almost-cheating of the fifth book and I was not disappointed.

There wasn't much interaction of Tom and Stanley as a couple (they kiss once), but their words, the fierce protectiveness of each other, the knowing smiles are enough to see the strong bond that exists between them. I still can't believe we are talking of the same Tom from the first book, when he told Stanley “I don’t even like to look at your dick. I don’t even like to remember that you’ve got one, if you want the truth.” Talk about progress!

As always, Victor leaves us all the hints to discover the murderer before Tom and Stanley. The main question is not who did it but why he did it. God, I didn't expect that turn of events. Tom Danzel finally gets to kick some ass to save the only really rare, really precious thing in his life. Awww

The end was rather abrupt. How much of that is Stanley supposed to endure to make Tom happy? The near-death experiences, the threats, the corpses... It's not fair. He should be decorating. And, what about Tom's family? I've never heard of them (maybe I don't remember). One thing is for sure: we need more of Tom and Stanley! ^^

Banis's excellent writing, humor and, naturally, the characters of Stanley and Tom are some of the trademarks of the series and A Deadly Kind of Love is not an exception. This book has surprisingly little drama in relationship department although the echoes of past problems still exist. It was refreshing though to read about TomStanley, a committed couple, certain in one another. The setting was very interesting, but obvious bad guy and over-the-top ending lowered my rating. Tom and Stanley remain one of my favorite pairs in the genre and this book reestablished that fact.

The best recommendation I can give is that, after six books, I will be reading the next one as well. There's no doubt in my mind about that. The guys have fought themselves, each other, they have fought for their friends, they've fought various bad guys so, I'm thinking, maybe it's time for Tom and Stanley against the world!

Another great addition to the series and to think I almost missed it. I didn't realize that Mr. Banis had switched the series to Dreamspinner Press and didn't catch that the book was in the Deadly Mystery series until I'd read the first few pages.

The book is fast moving, the story well plotted and the characters well developed. I loved the setting at the gay resort and Frederick and the use of the Green Mojave snake as a means of killing. There's also plenty of funny moments and danger. Tom and Stanley are two great of my favorite characters and still make a nice couple and this book was one of the best mysteries I've read in a while. Enjoy.

Although I have enjoyed this series of books From Victor Banis, when I came to the end I felt as though he must have been on a deadline from the publisher as the denouement seemed rather rushed and the ending cut short. On the plus side though the story was strong and made me think of some Agatha Christie books I have read.

Love reading about Tom and Stanley again. They've come a long way from book 1. 5 star most of the way but I wanted more from them. I understand V. Banis is not continuing the series so wished the ending had been a little less abrupt.

My favorite book in the series, it rated 4.5 stars until the extremely abrupt non-ending...I actually went back to check if there was a period at the end of the last sentence! There was, but it really felt like the book ended mid-sentence.

Haven't read the previous books but I liked the detectives together. I liked Chris but there wasn't enough of him in this book for my liking since the wholes beginning of the book was centered around him and then only little bits of him through the rest. Yoki broke my heart!!

Loved this series - loved Tom's no-nonsense approach balanced against Stanley's more dramatic energy. Some intriguing mystery, funny dialogue (inner and outer) and sexy characters. This is a series that could keep coming (7 out now) and I would just keep reading!
