In her novel, 'Almost Brilliant,' author T.K. Cassidy cleverly unfolds a peculiar tale that is smoothly written and entertaining. The premise--a small town is giving away cash and long-term housing, medical care, etc. to the resident of the town who is eldest on a particular date. 'Scabby,' a homeless senior citizen, is set to win-- except there are several in town older than he. The story, humorous in an eccentric way, is primarily relayed to the reader via Scabby, who is telling his story to an impressionable high school journalist. The growth of their relationship is a major strength of the novel. There is significant irony in this book as well as smiles, sweet moments, plenty of misdeeds and shenanigans.
