Blood Bowl #3

Death Match

Rate this book
Book 3 (of 3) in the riotous Blood Bowl series. In a fantasy kingdom where violence is a way of life, the number one sport is Blood Bowl - gridiron football where anything goes. Dirk 'Dunk' Hoffnung and the rest of the Bad Bay Hackers thought they'd taken everything the game of Blood Bowl could throw at them, but now they literally have to play the game of their lives to prevent the destruction of their kingdom.

I'm happy to report that the pacing issues that beset the second book in this series are nowhere to be found in this third volume and that this one is just as good as the first. I am a happy, little worshipper of Nuffle!

All your favourite characters are back for this book and it's a hilarious, action-packed romp. The stakes are raised more than a little this time out, with the Bad Bay Hackers (everybody's favourite new Blood Bowl team) not only trying to win the coveted Blood Bowl itself but also trying to save the world at the same time!

If you liked the first two books, you'll be as happy as a snotling in a mushroom patch with this one!

I guess there's not much else to say but BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!

P.S. Ignore the GR book description if it's still saying this is third part of a trilogy... There is a fourth book: Rumble in the Jungle.

Well... I don't know. The adventures of the Bad Bay Hackers continue. But somehow it seems that the books get worse by the book.

There is no character development, the characters act somehow out of character and stupidly, it seems the characters don't remember what has happened before etc. The games are all alike, although there often is something interesting happening. But mostly it's just Dunk getting in trouble and the teams ogre comes to save him at the last second.

There is some fun to be had and the overall plot is interesting at times. It's just the execution of the story that is flawed and could use a lot of polish.

I preferred this story over book 2. It was a fun ride and tied up some loose ends nicely.

Enjoyed it. Slightly random but it’s hard to write a sports book.

Not sure Khorne makes sense as the right Chaos God

Book number 7 from 2006 is Death Match, written by my friend Matt Forbeck. I gave Matt a pretty hard time about what I perceived to be flaws in the previous installment in this series, Dead Ball, but Death Match comes storming back, and has won me over.

Set in the fantasy world of Games Workshop's Warhammer, Blood Bowl is a sport not unlike football, but played by elves, dwarves, ogres, minotaurs, and of course humans. This, the third book in a trilogy (now a quadrilogy, if I remember correctly) has the Bad Bay Hackers and their star player, Dunk Hoffnung, doing battle against the forces of Chaos -- both on and off the Blood Bowl field -- and Dunk has a mark on his head that makes things both easier and more difficult for him.

Matt tells a good story, and his writing skills are pretty darned solid by now. I recommend this book to you as a combination sports story and fantasy novel.

In conclusion, Death Match is a good, funny read for existing fans of Warhammer and Blood bowl alike. Maybe you should give it a miss if you're not familiar with either, as it requires you to already be familiar with the Warhammer World in order to understand a lot of the humour. It would also be helpful to read the first two novels as a run up to this one, but it still stands on its own as a very good read.

Fantasy, 3rd novel of the series
Join Dunk Hoffnung on his attempt to bring honor back to his family's name by playing the deadly fantasy version of football.

So, it took 3 novels to learn why Dunk and his family was dishonored and banished from upper society. Character development does occur through learning of the incident. The revelation is tied to demons and Khorne, but it was just whatever. The writing of this novel just seemed spotty throughout. This felt like a rushed writing job.

Not horrible, but by reading this novel it becomes apparent how useless the 2nd novel was.

This series is set in the Blood Bowl world which is a bit like the Warhammer Word as imagined by the writers of Police Squad. Its laugh out loud funny through a series of gripping adventures full of amusing stereotypical characters that has something of Discworld mixed with Gotrek & Felix about it.
