What it says on the tin!
A handy illustrated guide to all things improv. Starts out with the basics, goes through a few "rules" / guidelines on how to build scenes (ending, of course, in "break the rules"), then spends the second half on giving you building blocks to create long form shows. A bit of theory on story arcs, believable characters etc. and an index of different long form formats, each with a one page explanation of how it works.
It's a good book for the not-exactly-novice-but-probably-every-other-level improviser. When you've started seeing how deep this thing goes and could use a good map of all the possible places you can take your improvising. Or when you know what you're doing but want a concise whimsical "dictionary" to refer to.
Probably works better as a book to keep close at hand and reference when needed, but reading it left to right and top to bottom was fun too.

Erinomainen, jopa järisyttävän hyvä koonti impron perusteista. Visuaalisuus avittaa muistamista todella paljon, huomaan sen jo nyt.
Ensimmäinen puolikas on täyttä timanttia. Pitkien tekniikoiden esittely on sekin hyvä ja informatiivinen osio mutta ei vedä vertoja alulle. Genreimpro-osio on sinänsä ihan kätevä yhteenveto mutta tuntuu ehkä vähän täytteeltä. Genreistä on listattu tyypillisiä piirteitä, mikä helpottaa kyseisistä genreistä kiinnostuneiden mutta niitä vähemmän tuntevien työtä. Toisaalta en itse lähtisi soveltamaan mitään genreä pitkän impron pohjaksi lukematta tai näkemättä genren perusteoksia. Siksi viimeinen osio tuntuu muuhun verrattuna jotenkin laiskalta, varsinkin, kun se ei sisällä muita ohjeita.
Mutta aivan järkyttävän hyvä koonti, joka on jo parantanut mun omaa improamista. Tästä tulee kirjahyllyn luetuin ja useimmin avattava kirja, siitä ei ole epäilystäkään. Suuri suositus kaikille improilijoille! Olisin hyötynyt tästä jo aiemmin, mutta toisaalta tämä hetki on tälle teokselle juuri täydellinen.

I think it would have been better as a very short and very small handbook for improvisers. And it seems that that was the original intention and the lengthy and unncessary second part was tacked on just to make it longer. But credit where credit is due - if you are looking for an overview of basic improv guidelines and principles, this is one of the best books out there.

An absolutely splendid book for newer improvisers (or any improviser who sometimes feels stuck and isn't sure why). Just lovely!
