A look at hyenas, including their habitats, physical characteristics such as their powerful jaws, behaviors, relationships with humans, and the declining populations of these often-misunderstood animals in the world today.
Melissa Gish is Associate Professor of English at Glenville State College, in West Virginia. She is the author of more than 100 juvenile educational books on such topics as biography, folklore, science, natural history, and wildlife.
Part of the Living Wild series, Hyenas briefly describes the four species of hyenas. Included are descriptions of their habitat, clan heirarchy, behaviors, and efforts to keep them from becoming extinct. There is also a very brief introduction to how hyenas are portrayed in folklore. All of this is satisfactory, but the true stars of this book are the photographs. As with all the books in the Living Wild series, the gorgeous, full-page photographs are why you should pick up this book.
I LOVE hyenas and very rarely see a book dedicated JUST to them. I was thrilled when I found a used copy for sale at our local library. I read it this afternoon and can't wait to share it with my students. It's just the right level for older elementary aged kids. I'm definitely going to be on the hunt for more books in the "Living Wild" series!
