Have you ever made eye contact with a beautiful stranger and thought they very well may be your soulmate only to be blatantly rejected by said soulmate?

Frannie has. But that didn’t stop her from borderline stalking the poor man until he eventually gave in.

This is a short tale of the kind of love a person only dreams of. But in addition to love, there is lore and superficial beings weaved in perfectly. Secrets unfold and lies are uncovered, but the love these two share trump any deception. The ending is bittersweet and reminds me of an episode of The Twilight Zone. A bunch of strange things happen which capture your interest and then the story closes leaving you satisfied, yet yearning for more. I absolutely loved what I read and will be reading more by this author.

Kill Your Husband, Rinse, Repeat

As we join Franny in the book, Franny’s Fable, she’s writing the story of her life with husband Jamie. He’s lying in bed in the next room, dead, stabbed through the heart. She killed him. There are authors who could turn the hate, the rage, the desperation that must have gone into such a violent act into a book. But Franny isn’t documenting her struggle for survival. She’s writing about the routine of her life, about something she’s done “more times than she can count” to quote the author’s synopsis. And what she’s documenting is … her love.

Hopefully, that paragraph gives you an idea how strangely twisted, yet highly enjoyable this book is. It draws you in with great pace, intensity, unexpected turns, and strange beings. Author Heather Harrison also uses foreshadowing to good advantage, ending sections with statements such as “… I never planned on seeing Jamie again. Of course, that was before the sickness started.” What sickness? And while the technique is easy to overuse, she doesn’t. She kept me wanting to read just one more section until the 114-page novella was complete. There’s even a touch of humor in this otherwise dark, creepy, paranormal romance, e.g., “I was happy, blissfully married, with the exception of occasionally having to kill my husband.” I’ve not seen chills and chuckles mixed better.

My concerns about the book are quite minor. For one, I’ve never cared when a character gains a complex understanding of another from one expression. “The look in his eyes was clear… there was no way he was going to let us be friends or anything else. What bothered me was, I could tell he wanted us to be.” That’s a lot to read from one look. The other is that I tend to write off protagonists who are self-destructive—if they don’t care, why should I? And Franny knows better but can’t help stalking Jamie. On the other hand, we’re only talking about one human here (Franny), almost making these issues feel like story.

My advice to the potential reader: Find a couple of hours to give this unexpected, highly entertaining book a read. If you have any interest in the genre, you’ll love it.

You wouldn’t think a novel that begins just after a woman has murdered her husband would qualify as a love story, but that’s exactly what Franny’s Fable is. A different kind of love story, to be sure, but one nonetheless.

As Franny tries to come to grips with the murder of her husband (not for the first time, as it turns out) and with the pain that wracks her body, she sits down and begins to type up the story of how she came to this point. Starting with her and her husband’s first meeting when she was a recent college grad touring Europe, she tells how she came to love a being who is only partly human.

The book is enchanting. I had to put it down a few times to tend to other things, but all the while I was feeding dogs, showering, etc., my mind was still back in Franny’s world. It’s a beautifully written short book with the feel of a fable, and the characters are people and—well, things—you won’t soon forget. If you enjoy literary paranormal tales, I highly recommend you give Franny’s Fable a try. You won’t regret it any more than Franny regrets the path she took as a young woman.

The Good
I loved the blurb of this book and was hook line and sinker. The start is compelling and addictive. The chase just spectacular.

The Bad
Novellas are short. This is where I got frustrated as I felt the sex was too fast and should have been drawn out. All the love/hate for the first sex session- threw me slightly out of my comfort zone. Yes. I am a sucker for old-fashioned romance and any young adult will be giggling and laughing at me now! But spanking in the first few minutes? My goodness!

The Ugly
The story was strange, remarkable and yet exciting. The touch with the present day added to the excitement but the end slightly rushed. It is sad as for such a strong alien/changeling, I didn't want to think of him as weak.. with his grey sexy eyes...

Definitely one for any shapeshifter, mild horror, young people. I enjoyed it

This is the first work I've read by this author and frankly, I was impressed. The story revolves around a changeling and the woman he falls for. Although little is written regarding these legendary creatures, I rather imagine that the author has nailed it with her "expose" of the race. This story is told from two viewpoints- that of the recent college graduate Frannie McClain, and the older version of herself. The author does a fine job of creating a difference between the two narrative voices, as is befitting this passage of time. The story is a quick, fun and easy to follow read. I enjoyed the tale, the page turning pace and especially the author's take on the mythology Well done and recommended.

WOW. I’ve never read a tale like this before. The story sucked me right in. I finished this book in one sitting; I just couldn’t put it down.

This is a dark romance of sorts that Franny finds while vacationing with friends in Paris. I was expecting more of a murder mystery but found it to be more of a paranormal horror/ romance instead and I wasn’t disappointed.

Most of the story I was left wondering about what the heck Jamie could be. I kept thinking that he was a werewolf but what he turns out to be is much creepier.

The story is really well written and I found it to be a very enjoyable read.

This story is an intriguing enemies to lovers cat and mouse seduction. This read will leave you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing until the very end. Franny's desire for Jamie causes her to enter a dangerous world where she doesn't know the rules. This was a great love story with a dark twist. The Author uses beautiful language and is skillful at describing complex characters.

While on vacation in France with her friends from college, Franny finds love in the most unusual of circumstances.

A horror/romance/paranormal thriller, this novella hooks you in immediately and carries you on a ride of lust, intrigue and the supernatural. Once I started reading I could not put it down. This story will not disappoint. Well done.

Rewind to 1966 with a short, easy to read horror story that will literally creep you out when you discover what’s really going on.

"She looked at me like I was about to be eaten by a monster."

The morbid opening scene is written with a flashback, which created unease in the reader and helps keep you in the story.

Franny is a sassy, and stubborn young woman from the Midwest and her girlfriends are typical college students. When they graduate, they take the trip of a lifetime together to Paris. It’s amazing, historic and beautiful. They go looking for trouble in the form of drinking, finding willing sexual partners etc., well it finds them.

Specifically in Franny’s case.

In the form of tall, dark and mysterious Jaime. His stormy, bad boy charm character could easily have slipped into an overused romance trope, but thankfully it didn’t because, Jaime doesn’t want to have anything to do with her to the point of being rude multiple times and is even a little strange about it.

At this point I wondered why Franny even bothered to pursue? It isn’t too difficult for a pretty young woman to snag an attractive person in Paris or any big city who wouldn’t love to have a drink and maybe a bit more, especially if there are no strings.

The author has a signature writing style that takes the last sentence of a scene and increases the tension to keep the reader engaged, so I read on to find out what the big secret was.

Franny has a one-track mind and likes to play with fire. Finally her friends give up on her making good choices, as they are preoccupied with their own adventures and Franny discovers one evening just what an enormous mistake she’s made.

"He seemed to taste my name."

Oh how I loved this line. It startled me and later on I returned to it. So many layers to this very simple, but prophetic sentence.

The scene where the truth is revealed by Jaime is written very well with a darkly erotic, and animalistic overtone that gives the story its rocket fuel. I wasn’t sure at first how I felt about that scene because of the 18 + imagery, but then I realized without it…the reader might not have understood just how much trouble Franny was in.

The use of European folklore -- specifically to the point of mixing it with contemporary details and adding a twist to a legendary creature was fascinating. This element was what I loved the most about this story. I have always been very interested in woodland faieries, Celtic magic and the wandering spirits that seem to intertwine in so many cultures. Stories meant to frighten us from straying in the wilderness have been around for centuries.

If you enjoy classic style horror written with modern details. You will totally dig this one!

Whoa

I did not know what to expect, and when I did think I had figured it out, I was wrong. I was drawn in from the first page and now I want a sequel.
My only issue is where I feel the author decided to speed things up instead of show the story unfolding; I would have liked more scenes of their time together in their early life. It would have made the end more bittersweet. Also, since the author gave us a sex scene early on, more would have been appropriate, to make the story more paranormal erotica.
Even given all that, however, I will keep this one in my pile to read again.

Two words

Only two words can really do this book justice. Brilliantly fantastic. This author brought me into this dark romance and sucked me in... I didn’t want it to end when it did. She created a world and I could feel and she introduced me to new creatures I’d love to read more of. This is not your typical shifter book, or one of a million other paranormal magazine- it’s fresh and amazing. Fan for life!!!!

Short Scary Read

Sometimes you see someone across the room and connect. What if that ends unexpectedly? This is a quick read that takes you down a different road. I had to read it from start to finish in one sitting. Gripping and a bit tragic, you feel for the characters. Good horror.
