He needs a promotion. She needs to stay in the country. Piper Quinn has a great thing going. She’s young, talented, and the sole chef at Du Jour, San Antonio’s hottest lunch bistro. She and her business partner just have to stay open one year to be eligible for the coveted Texas Star.
Days before eligibility though, Piper gets terrible news: she’s getting deported. To New Zealand. Where her parents have joined a hobbit cult.
Attorney Zach Travis can’t seem to break into the partnership bracket at his big, respected firm—despite his stellar record. Then, Zach hears a rumor his bachelor status may be holding him back, and he needs a wife to advance his career. The girl at the bistro is an intriguing candidate.
As Piper shares her desperate plea for legal help, Zach realizes he can fix both their dilemmas—with a marriage certificate. However, their plan puts them in the cross-hairs of more than one vindictive enemy. Worse, neatly ending their marriage may be tricky due to a sparking chemistry neither Zach nor Piper can ignore.
Illegally Wedded is book 7 in the Legally in Love Collection by clean romantic comedy author Jennifer Griffith. Great fun for fans of Cami Checketts and Jennifer Peel.
I love a story that ends with a kiss, whether it's a book or a movie. That's the big payoff! So that's the kind of books I like to write, and I call my style "cotton candy for the soul"-- light, sweet, gone. We all need a little escape from reality for a while, and escapist fiction can be the perfect remedy.
I'm a moderately bad housekeeper, I have a black thumb, and it takes a small miracle to get my hair to curl. My handsome husband and I live in the Arizona desert where we're raising our five children, who never let us stop laughing.
I always think of marriages of convenience being back in history, when things were arranged because of hard times or situations, but this modern-day arrangement totally made sense and worked! Oh, my...this one definitely worked. And I think this author is really making a name for herself with these modern-day twists.
I think this one is my favorite Jennifer Griffith novel to date. Piper and Zach are great characters and they each need each other in different ways. Zach...wow...he could sure swoon the socks off of any woman. And Piper's loyalty is as strong as her presence in the kitchen. I don't know if I drooled more over the yummy food descriptions or over the swoon. How can two such perfectly matched people who complement each other in indescribable ways end up together on a chance whim?
There is comedy and romance in spades and between the igniting sparks and my desire to know how this was all going to go down, I couldn't stop reading. I woke up twice in the middle of the night and had to read for just "one more chapter." All this drama and deceit felt like a hopelessly fast runaway train, but let me just tell you--it worked and I don't know if my heart is going to recover any time soon.
Content: mild+ romance (spicy chemistry, kisses)
*I received a copy, which had no influence on my thoughts and opinions*
Piper's life is pretty near perfect. She's the sole chef at the up-and-coming restaurant, Du Jour, she's weeks away from receiving the coveted Texas Star Award, she's got crazy parents who love her, amazing friends who adore her, and she's happy. But one little word turns her life upside down and has her dreams coming to a screeching halt. Deportation.
Zach has sacrificed and worked hard to get to where he is in the prestigious law firm he works at. With the higher ups retiring, he is so close to having his dream of partner come true. Once he makes partner, he'll have the time he needs to help heal his family and bring them back to life. But when he is passed up twice, he's got to figure out what's holding him back before the final opportunity passes him by. But one little word turns his life upside down and has his dreams coming to a screeching halt. Marriage.
When Zach overhears Piper's situation, he approaches her with a business deal. Marriage of convenience to help keep her in the US and help him get promoted to partner. It seems like the perfect plan. Until one too many enemies come out of the wood work and do their best to bring Piper and Zach down. But the more curve balls being thrown their way has them turning to each other, rather than tearing them apart. The closer they become, the stronger their feelings grow.
Do Piper and Zach have what is takes to overcome the bumps in the road that will lead them to a happily ever after?
*dreamy sigh*
Oh my gosh! You guys! Can I just tell you how amazing this book is?! Because it's AMAZING! I absolutely LOVED Illegally Wedded! I lost all track of time while I was reading. I stayed up reading late into the night, only stopping when my kindle kept hitting me in the face when I would doze off. And I woke up early just to finish reading the book! One minute it was 7:00am and the next it was 12:45pm. There were no breaks of any kind... I just HAD to finish this book!
I have only read a couple of books in this series and right now I'm asking myself WHY I haven't read ALL of them?! I think I need to get on that sooner, rather than later! ;)
If you haven't read any of Ms. Griffith's books then you are definitely missing out! Any author who can get me out of that dreaded reading rut is and will always be a favorite! I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next! But in the meantime, I can devour all her books I haven't read yet... ;) Hehe.
As for my casting... *dreamy sigh* I absolutely LOVE these two! What do you think?!
This book has my all time favorite theme, marriage before you really get to know someone. It is a tough thing to make work. Zach wants a big promotion at work, Piper is going to be deported and lots of people depend on her. She is an amazing Chef and can melt anyone's heart with her kindness and her cooking. He is head over heals the first time he sees her which drives the proposal of a marriage of convenience for both of them. This had some great characters and a good setting. There were some fun quirky elements to this story that could have worked. The problem was there were too many crazy strange elements that kept pooping up out of no where. This review is not too bash the book, It had some real issues but the author has promise if she can cut down the words and all the thought talk. Lots of thoughts being repeated over and over again is not a good way to tell a story. I started to skim any time the characters would go into there thoughts because it was the same thing over and over again. If you tell a scene from one characters POV don't tell the same scene from the other characters POV it makes the book drag, especially if nothing is different. Don't introduce Christianity at the midway point of the book. It should be an element throughout the story. All the sudden they are talking about God and Angles but it is not talked about again. It was odd. Another element that was over used in this story was the "interrupted" before the big kiss, moment, love reveal. You can use this once if you must but never 5 or 6 times. The ending was my biggest problem it was so overdone. SPOILERS( Weird Hobbit villages, crazed MMA wrestler ex-boyfriend, psychopath Ranger Ex-boyfriend, revenge seeking sexy emigration officer, Neil Diamond loving grandma, motorcycle riding-bar owning grandma, secret agent food critic and a house full of depressed people. I just couldn't believe all the nonsense stuffed in this book.(Spoilers ended) This is a clean romance with talk of sex because they are married. But nothing is detailed or sensual. Some passionate kisses.
I really loved this story. I had a hard time putting it down. The characters were just so easy to love, the chemistry was super charged and I loved how things turned several times in ways I wasn't expecting. This is one I'd love to read again. (It has kind of put me in another book hangover. I'm having a hard time getting into another book!) I picked this one up on KU.
This book kept me up reading until 2 AM, and I loved every minute of it!
I loved how Jennifer Griffith worked a marriage of convenience story into a marriage for citizenship story. Piper is a chef, and is on the cusp of winning a prestigious award when she finds out that she's not a U.S. citizen and is being deported. She has always had a U.S. driver's license, birth certificate, and social security card. How can this be? A chance encounter, and a plea for help at a law office, introduce her to Zach, who offers to marry her. With their marriage, she can stay in the country, and he can hopefully get the promotion he's been waiting for. Throw in a NSA officer with an axe to grind, food critics, scheming lawyers, and some hobbits, and this is an irresistible recipe.
The romance between Piper and Zach was sweet and electrifying. I also loved that Piper's parents left the U.S. to join a hobbit community in New Zealand. Who does that?! It was very entertaining!
This book was chock full of spine tingling kisses, a dashing lawyer who comes to the rescue again and again, delicious sounding food, and laugh out loud moments.
The only drawback: I am now afraid to pick up my most recent Jennifer Griffith book. I obviously have no self control and will stay up entirely too late to read it!
A couple getting married, without knowing each other, to solve problems for each of them. There were lots of fun ideas in this book that made it an entertaining read. However there were a few problems as well. Too much repetition of the exact same thoughts about each other. By the time I was halfway through the book I was skipping over the paragraphs in which we had to hear the exact same thoughts, again. But I was still enjoying the writing and character interactions. The other problem was that the author seemed to forget sometimes that she had already written a point or interaction and wrote it again a few pages or chapters later. This happens a few times through the book. It was frustrating because I found I had to go back and reread the first point or interaction to determine if I had misunderstood. For example, Piper worries about not having her passport and then a few pages later she and Zach have the exact same conversation. Another is when Piper meets the boss's wife then a few pages later she meets the boss's wife again, but this time the interaction is different making it very confusing. I thought the resolutions to the problems were creative and imaginative and I enjoyed the ending.
I have to really love a book to give the perfect 5 stars but this one deserved it! This is probably my favorite book of hers. The book was a fun read with several unexpected twists and turns. I adore food and the descriptions she had in the book made my mouth water... Well written characters and plot. Would DEFINITELY recommend this book. Received this book as an ARC, all opinions are my own.
I really liked Zach and Piper. I loved the idea of her restaurant (I was just in San Antonio and ate on the Riverwalk, and I wish I had eaten at her restaurant instead of the one I ate at), and I loved how good Zach and Piper were together. But...
While I like quirky characters, this story had too many different kinds of crazy going on in the same story. I felt relieved when I was done with it and leave some of the crazy characters behind (some were fun; some were over the top for me).
Illegally Wedded (Legally in Love #6) - PG Violence: none Language: nothing offensive Sex: no sex
I read back to back Jennifer Griffith books and she's just making me So Happy! The heroine of this book is surrounded by the quirkiest characters and she takes it all in stride. You can see why the H is so smitten with her. I did Not see the ending coming and Loved it!
I LOVE Jennifer Griffith's books! They're so well written and so much fun! I love the romance aspect, she really does a great job with it. This one was no different, I loved every bit of it!
Zach is such a great character in this one. I love the opening scene in Du Jour with Kinsey. She acts like a boor and he is so annoyed at not being able to eat his lunch that he was looking forward to that he gets rid of her on the spot. I love the way you learn more and more about him as the story goes on. The way he cares for his family. The way he's so loyal and works so hard to make everything just right for Piper. The way he falls for her so fast and is just there for her when she needs him most.
Piper is one of my favorite characters! I loved the whole idea of Du Jour, and she was the chef behind it. I didn't like her boyfriend Chad at all though! She definitely needed to get rid of him! I liked the way she was so concerned about any and all laws that she may have unknowingly broken by not being who she thought she was. And I loved the way she was true and loyal to Zach, even though she was thinking she may not stay married to him forever.
I love the plot of this one! I love the way Piper and Zach get married. He puts so much more effort into it than she had thought he would. I love the way they fall in love after they're married, slow and sweet. I love all of the little things these two each do for the other. And the ending is just so perfect!
This is one of Jennifer's best books so far! I really enjoyed all of the geeky refrences, and the food descriptions are mouth-watering. Seriously, I might have gained weight just by reading some of those delicious foods. The attraction between the two main characters was done very well. Great job! Five stars. Would read again.
This was 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. Just before starting this book, I had read a very classy love story. By comparison, “Illegally Wed” had a premise that would—in non-fiction—be dangerous and unappealing. I would never advocate marriage to anyone within a week. It sometimes had caricatures rather than characters. Also, “Illegally” had such a different “tone” from the other romance that the tone of “Illegally” grated a bit on me until I adjusted from the gracious tone of the last book to a bit more chick-lit tone of “Illegally.” Additionally, I have to admit to scan-reading at times, which is normally an automatic two-star rating. I particularly scan-read at the beginning when the tone bothered me, until I adjusted to it. However, I did adjust and won’t lower my star rating clear to 2 stars for my scan-reading of “Illegally” because I definitely enjoyed this story more than that.
I was disappointed at the portrayal of Zach's legal preparation for Piper's entire ICE case. While it would probably make a non-attorney swoon that Zach was setting aside his casework for love, it made me cringe and think malpractice. If he was as competent in his big, prestigious firm as he was portrayed to be, he would have hired an attorney conversant in immigration law to take on Piper's case, particularly in light of the tight time frame and his lack of objectivity aka high emotional involvement. Sure, he called his immigration lawyer friend and talked a bit but this is a specialized area of practice where a simple conversation would not have been enough for Zach to rely on to represent Piper adequately. Zach could have been shown to have helped in some way to indicate his emotional stake in the outcome (if paying legal fees would not have done so), but his late-night, bleary-eyed, hurry-up, lack-of-in-depth-training prep was incompetent and disappointing to me, particularly because law is the thread tying the books in the series together.
Otherwise, this was a cute chick-lit story with engaging characters. Despite my original “tone” aversion, I became hooked on the characters and they carried me through to the end.
I enjoyed reading this book. The basic plot concept reminded me of a Hallmark movie I saw crossed with a Sandra Bullock movie. What is not to enjoy in that?
I liked Zach and Piper though as is usually the case with these kinds of books, there wasn't enough good communication between them. They could have had a lot less angst if they had just communicated. But then there would have been a lot less story too. Go figure.
I had to wonder how much money Zach had sitting in the bank because he seemed to throw money around like he never had a worry. He is pretty swoony too. And Piper is rather too good to be true. Beautiful but she doesn't realize it. Gifted in her cooking but also gifted with people. They are both people I would like to know.
Despite there being a lot of talk and thought about sex, or the lack thereof, in this book, it is clean. She is saving herself for her one and only so she doesn't want to consummate this "business arrangement" marriage. But then she grows to love Zach so she is willing but so many problems get in the way. There is some innuendo and passionate kissing but nothing too graphic. And when their problems are finally resolved the bedroom door is closed. So a mild+ rating I think.
A vendetta...a nefarious plan...the perfect revenge
-‘Their eyes met, and that pulsation caught him, just like it had in the elevator. This girl was his cold fusion—impossibly explosive energy generated from the tiniest of her particles touching his.’-
A few times things were repeated, things that had already been said or explained previously, so it was a bit off-putting. Also, I found the way the author talked about the Canadian customs officer offensive. As a Canadian myself, it really bothered me that she made him out to be an idiot and even made his fictional name to sound like “dim witted”. The New Zealanders were portrayed as wackos. I love this author’s work but these things bothered me enough that I dropped one star in my rating.) This is a fun story. Suspend reality for a while, sit back and get comfortable, and enjoy the read!
The book has promise and is based on one of my favorite cheesy romantic tropes - marriage of convenience. That being said, it d r a g g e d for me!! There were a looooot of pages for covering a span of only 2 weeks, and as another previous reviewer mentioned, there was just too much going on at any given time. Between the SPOILERS 2 crazy ex-boyfriends, the 2 different grandmas, a freaking concert in Canada (how do you cross into Canada without knowing it, btw? The border might be lax, but not so lax that you don’t know you’re going into another country) a honeymoon in Puerto Rico, then a food critic that happens to be the partners secret boyfriend, to a hobbit cult in NZ that’s secretly a food critic group? Too. Much. END SPOILERS.
So... it’s a no from me on this one, even though I wanted to like it.

I would have given this one a 5 rating, but toward the end (and her parents the whole way through), the story got a little crazy. The tempo sped up and it started to feel unrealistic with the trial, the two loser ex's, and the cooking in Hobit land. Plus, the MC's were always all over each other. We get it that they are physically attracted to each other already. I like the clean romance as much as the next person, but it was almost too much. On the whole, however, I loved the book. There was lots of humor. I loved the unique phrases and words such as 'a whole bowl of nope'(that's not the line in the story exactly, btw). A good storyline for all the deportation that exists today. The second book in this series is still my favorite. I probably wouldn't read this one again.
Location: San Antonio, TX. What would you do if you found out your birth certificate, school diplomas and college degree are all false because you parents told you were born in the USA but you were born in New Zealand before they moved to America? Piper will be looking for a way to stay in America! What would you do if you found out despite your success as a lawyer and working for the lawyer's company for 7 days a week, you cannot make partner unless you are married? Zach needs to find a woman to marry him! Guess when Zach meets green-eyed Piper that he has found the one. Guess when Zach takes Piper out for dinner and later proposes to her that she should say yes! Of course circumstances will stall them on their way to a HEA!
I loved this book! I was engaged the entire time, and didn’t want to stop reading. I also wanted to eat. :) Hearing all of the food descriptions and the way Piper thought about food had me wanting to dive into the pages and head to Du Jour.
I fell in love with the characters immediately. There were so many things to love about them! Piper is genuine and kind. Zach is good and considerate. They’re both hard working and really care about other people. And their chemistry is off the charts!
The story was great, and had plenty of twists. I really liked the way everything worked out. It’s another winner from Jennifer Griffith!
I received a complimentary copy of the book, which I voluntarily reviewed. I have given my honest opinion.
Romance, clean, series This was a cute turn of marriage of convenience. Definitely a light read, some miscommunication of feelings, some 'bad' characters out to expose their secret and take them down. Piper and Zach were fun characters. Her and his dilemmas made for a cute setting for this fall in love romance. They were genuine, honest characters with sincere hearts. A cute read and fun fall if you like light romance. The restaurant and legal settings were fun. Worth a read if you enjoy light romance. I received a copy in exchange for a fair and honest review. My opinions are my own.
I liked the premise of this story but at times I felt the Lawyer would have done or said something differently. He was very smart at times but sometimes I didn’t feel he was “lawyer” smart. Especially in the courtroom during her deportation hearing.
Also, at the end I don’t think they would announce they are pregnant to reporters and everyone there based on Birdies hypothesis/declaration and Piper not feeling right! Their eyes may get big and they may smile at the thought, but they would more likely say something like “either that or I’m coming down with the flu” as that could easily explain how she is feeling as well.

Piper and Zach have a cute story. Piper receives notice from ICE that she is in the country illegally though she has believed she was born in country for as long as she has lived in Texas. Finding out her parents had been telling her stories all of her life and faked her documents is unnerving so she begins seeking help immediately. Zach is an attorney who believes he needs a wife in order to get a promotion he has been seeking for years and remembers meeting Piper. There story is a little crazy with hobbit traveling parents, teacup dogs, and nosy but sweet neighbors included. Be sure to check out this book for a chuckle or two while reading.
Piper and Zach made for an excellent match. Even though it took awhile for them to realize it, they eventually caught on. This story had just the right amount of mystery, romantic angst, heartache, happiness, good friends, loving family, etc. It had me smiling, holding my breath, crying, a whole gambit of feelings. I especially loved the HEA. This could be a stand-alone book even though it’s a part of a series. I liked that it didn’t end with a cliffhanger. Highly enjoyable and recommended.
3 1/2 stars At first I thought the characters of Chad and Mr. and Mrs. Quinn were a little over the top, but Jennifer did an amazing job of using each character development to display different reaction one could have to the events we encounter in life. She put at sassy twist on the marriage of convenience motif, that I loved. There was plenty of chemistry and just enough drama to keep you reading to the end. https://bookconfessionsblog.wordpress...
Popper gets a letter from ICE telling her that she has been illegally in the USA. She has 30 days to get the papers proving they are wrong. All these years her parents have kept this secret. She needs a good lawyer. Zack over hears her story and thinks he can solve her and his trouble. Will their business deal work? Well written story with strong and believable characters. Really enjoyed this book.
FUN! Lovely twist ... really had me going. I love how Jennifer Griffith makes her characters so loveable ... and how easily she can get me to dispise the right characters as well. AND, I can always count on that happy ending. Great read and totally acceptable for teen readers. Nice clean romance!
Piper is an exceptional chef of an up and coming restaurant. Zach is an associate at a local law firm with dreams of becoming a partner. She's facing deportation and he needs a wife. Can a quick marriage solve their problems or will it create more? Great book. Can't wait for the next one!
This was a funny read, because you have two amazing people that would have ended up together that took the short track and were married before dating. Then the craziness ensues. All the more reason for being selective about who you date, because vengeful ex-boyfriends are no fun.
3.5 stars. Marriage-of-convenience stories are inherently preposterous, but I'm good with that. There were lots of interesting side wrinkles (hobbit colonies among them). The author did a good job of spreading out the plot development, although maybe it was just a tad bit crazy at the end. Clean, despite a great deal of romantic tension. I would be interested in reading more from this author.
Ok I was skeptical about this book, especially when it started exactly the way Legally Wedded had started, except that this time it was the woman who was in a long term relationship. I was wrong though--Griffith wrote characters that made me care about that and a story that was interesting to me, with a sweet happily ever after.
I don't know what it was about this book, maybe the underdog feel of it. I love how their love story started with a single look toward her and he having no idea she was the cook of the food he loved. A way to a man's heart is through his stomach right. I also loved the hobbit stuff, I'm a fan but I couldn't live like that. I love how he fought to get her back. It was just a great love story.
