As Rin continues to experience the joy of camping with others, Nadeshiko is becoming obsessed with camping herself. Now that finals are over, where will the girls be off to next?
Ahhh there is such sweet simplicity in this series. There isn't really much to it in terms of plot, but if you're the type of person that reads stuff simply based off vibes then I would definitely recommend going for this specific title. We're still following our cast of girls as they learn more about camping and camping equipment. Rin heads out on a solo journey after Nadeshiko catches a cold, but they utilize pictures, calls, and messages so that both can essentially enjoy the journey. I'm excited to see where the rest of this series is going to go in terms of friendship development especially with Rin because she's more closed off than the rest of the characters. Overall, another great installment!
Solitary girl Rin heads off on a solo camping trip own when her friend comes down with a cold. The friend still participates remotely via cellphone as Rin hits more dead-ends and detours than she is used to. But things not going smoothly make for one of the funniest and cutest volumes yet, with some fuzzy doggies and bears as a bonus.
for some reason i didn't love it as much as the first two but it was still very cute and relaxing, there are cute dogs and even a cute bear at the end. really nice and chill without being sickly, overly sweet
Kind of the same shit as the previous two volumes. Afro gives us more hardcore camping action. By which I mean Afro plods along with his manga-format infomercial on camping supplies. Rin doesn't want to go camping with Nadeshiko if it means camping with Aki and Aoi, but there's no melodrama about it (which is good), but there's also nothing else about it whatsoever. I guess Aki's kinda annoying, but Rin doesn't hang out with anyone else anyway, except Saitou, but also not really (they seem to only text each other), so it's not like she has firsthand experience with Aki being annoying, which might push her away from wanting to camp with everyone. She has zero problem with Nadeshiko, who, while cute af, is also very annoying, so why the fuck not just hang out with Aki and Aoi as well? And the non-entity that is Saitou is the actual push that gets Rin interested in camping with everyone, at the very end of the volume.
Rin is just a piece of shit character. It makes sense to show us the world of camping through her eyes, because there is nothing behind them. The blankest slate possible. Ideal for self-inserting, I guess.
Her experience in the hot springs is quite alright. Shows that she's pretty good-looking, in spite of her awful hair either doing that stupid "thot bun" thing, or otherwise hanging loosely to show how fucking long it is. Turns out Aki has the same problem, but I'm not too concerned about that since I just don't care too much for that character.
Am I too cynical to enjoy such pure slice-of-life? Not really. If anything, I enjoy the series BECAUSE it's so boring. Very inoffensive, it makes for decent reading on the toilet. That's praise, I swear!
This volume really makes me think the series was made for a similar reason Akagi was made: actually as more of a primer than a pure "story." Where Akagi is about teaching higher levels of Mahjong (not THAT Mahjong), Laid-Back Camp is about teaching tips about camping and cooking, something like a travelogue with a bit of a story.
This volume in specific covers some *heavily inspired* locations, with similarities to real-world attractions (or, real-world legends, anyway. vs. things solely made up for the series) and fake URLs for the same. The principles are similar, anyway, and some of the tips could be useful—plan your trip ahead instead of ending up like Rin and getting stranded far from the campsite (and open bathrooms, yikes); check for signs explaining why a road is closed (the road may actually be open but workers left the barrier)*; stake the tent pegs first if there are heavy winds (or get a lot of exercise chasing down your tent, haha). There's even a quick and dirty recipe for houtou, though it sounds like you can make it with just about anything.
Like, I can't promise I would remember anything I read in this volume in a week, even, but it's definitely enjoyable while reading it, like the coziness of camping without the actual camping or spending $$$$ on camping gear (which makes their hobby even more baffling, since most of them are unemployed high schoolers, but I guess it's to help point out budget issues).
*Obviously, if it looks unsafe, that's one thing, but if the road doesn't have any obvious reason for closure, it really might be open.
The OEC members have survived their exams and celebrate by going to a huge camping supply store. Then Rin sets off for another solo camping trip to Nagano when Nadeshiko comes down with a cold. Aki brings houtou noodles over to help Nadeshiko feel better and ends up making it for the whole family as they assume she makes it best when they hear where she's from. Aki sweats bullets trying to make houtou correctly for the first time for so many, and meanwhile Rin is having trouble getting to her campsite with winter road closures so Aki and Nadeshiko help her out via messages. And the OEC continues to plan their Christmas camping trip, which maybe they can convince Rin to join.
Poor Rin. She has quite the time getting with her solo trip. But Aki and Nadeshiko help keep things upbeat. Aki's cooking bit is humorous, and the bit in the camping supply store actually gives good tips on camping mats and some other equipment. I like that this series shows that girls can be interested in outdoorsy activities.
Notes on content: 1 minor swear. No sexual content. No violence.
In this third part, Rin goes solo camping in the winter again but is thankful for help from the OEC girls when she keeps getting jammed up by closed roads. It really shows the difficult side of winter camping. Nadeshiko is stuck at home with a cold but uses the opportunity to text Rin on her trip, and OEC member, Chiaki, comes and cooks her a special dish from Yamanashi called Houtou noodles.
Also, Rin uses a mountain pie maker and cooks a pork bun with butter. I gotta try that sometime! It looks so good!
Learning about nature and camping with these lovely girls is probably the most fun you'll have unless you go camping yourself. They appreciate the work and preparation that goes into their camping excursions and the beauty of the natural world. But they also like to eat well, have adventures, squish on some animals, and scooter to remote areas to relax in hot springs or visit a dog shrine as is the case in this one.
I'm not an outdoor person so this book is perfect for me, it's like I'm there enjoying the nature around mount fuji and lakes in Japan. Loveeee the cozy small town vibes also love the friendship, I adore these girls, they're just cute and each has their own charm. My fav in this volume is Rin's solo camp with Nadeshiko and Aki as her guides and Aki cooking for Nadeshiko's family. Totally enjoy this through and through.
I'm still really enjoying this series. I love seeing Rin make all these detours and learning how to roll with the adventure. I hope to see more kinds of campers that the girls meet on their journeys.
A trip to the outdoor equipment store (reminds me of going to Bass Pro Shop) and Rin's solo camping adventure (with assistance from Nadeshiko and Aki).
But the girls are planning a Christmas camping trip with everyone included so there's that to look forward to.
Exams have passed, so the outdoor exploration club celebrates by visiting an outdoor supply store. The teens dream of how much more they'll enjoy camping once they are adults. The story of these young ladies friendships warms your soul as they deepen. However, the food really makes you hungry!
"Solo Camping in the Modern World" could have been the name of this volume. Rin has some "cold" and "memorable" adventures. This is not a smooth sailing adventure for sure! I never like to write so few words...but I really don't think much more is needed.
A huge outdoor store, a detour in the mountains, and a whole lot of fun. This series continues to delight. Give it to anyone interested in camping or in slice of life manga.
