About the author

V.K.N.' or VKN (abbreviated from his full name Vadakkke Koottala Narayanankutty Nair) (6 April 1932 - 25 January 2004) was a pathbreaking and celebrated Malayalam writer, noted mainly for his high-brow satire. Apart from novels, he wrote short stories and political commentaries. A native of Kerala in south India, his works are considered distinctive for their multi-layered humour, trenchant criticism of the socio-political classes and uncanny ability to twist the meanings of words contextually, thus lend a touch of magic to his language (which, at times, was English too).
VKN's works call for an attentive and informed reader who can recognise his allusions and follow his changes in language, where he shifts between English, Hindi, Malayalam and a distinctive variety of Tamil spoken by the Iyer community in Palakkad. In most cases, the use of language other than Malayalam is immediately followed by a translation (in parentheses), but these translations have little do with what they stand for in the original.
Born on 6 April 1932, in Thiruvilwamala in Thrissur district, VKN, after completing his matriculation, joined the Malabar Devaswom Board and worked there for 9 years. Like a good number of modern Malayalam writers like O. V. Vijayan, VKN spent many years in New Delhi (from 1959 to 1969) as an English journalist. The experiences he gained during these years that also coincided with the nascent post-independent India finds a recreation in one of his most heralded work, Pitamahan (The Great Grandfather). He entered Malayalam literature in 1955.
VKN is considered as a genius, for his knowledge in philosophy, history, art, politics, literature (both Indian and Western; ancient and modern), social issues, ethnicity, agriculture, astrology and sport. It merits some acquaintance with his writing style and deep understanding of language and politics to really comprehend and appreciate his wit and insight. Due to this reason, it is near impossible to convey his brilliance in translations and it is very difficult even for those who understand Malayalam to fully grasp his multi-dimensional wizardry.
His humour comes from inverting his own language to expose both the inner workings and shortcomings of our languages as a means of communication. In certain stories/narrations, the characters of the story/narration comment about the author. Malayalam critics have yet to understand him well, and a proper study about his works and style is yet to happen in the language. VKN served as vice-chairperson of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Thrissur. He had also chaired the Kunchan Smarakam at Killikkurussimangalam near Ottappalam.

If you ask me who is the biggest superstar character by any Malayalam author in a literary creation, my answer will always be Payyan by V.K.N.

If you use the language of Gen-Z or millennials, we can easily describe Payyan as an amalgamation of Ethan Hunt, James Bond, and Jack Reacher. Payyan is funny and serious at the same time. The sarcasm and humor underlying the conversations will surprise the readers.

Payyan's heroics won't be forgotten quickly by the readers once we go through this book. Payyan is not just a swashbuckling hero interested in performing his heroic acts but a literary genius who will make us laugh with his wit and wisdom many times. This is also my go-to Malayalam book when I am having a reading slump, as V.K.N's simple narration style will easily help me to overcome any reading slump.

"Payyan" (meaning "lad" in Malayalam) is the alter ego of Vadakke Koottala Narayanankutty Nair, or V.K.N as he is known to his readers. V.K.N created his own signature style in Malayalam, combining terse sentences, absurd statements and comical juxtapositions to create a kind of humour which was a mixture of Kafka with Stephen Leacock. This Sahitya Akademi award-winning tome is a collection of short stories, most of them loosely based on his experiences as a journalist in Delhi.

Apart from Payyan, we meet Colonel Renu, his lady love; the book-store proprietor Ittoop who can travel all over the world with a few English phrases; "His Highness" who orders curd and pickles in a five-star restaurant in Delhi; and many others. Payyan's own experience as a prisoner in his incarnation as Franz Kafka ("Kaalaghattam") is quite easily my favourite in this book: the story "Premavum Vivahavum" (Love and Marriage) is a close second. All Ittoop stories are rib-ticklingly hilarious.

V.K.N is the Malayalam equivalent of Wodehouse for me, for lifting my spirits when I am down in the dumps.

ഈ കഥാപാത്രം നേരിടുന്ന ഓരോന്നും നമ്മുടെ ചുറ്റും നിത്യേന നടക്കുന്ന കപടനാട്യങ്ങളെയും പൊള്ളത്തരങ്ങളെയും കളിയാക്കാൻ ഒറിജിനൽ പയ്യൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.

Heights of satire in Malayalam. Keralites by nature are a sarcastic lot and Payyan crows from atop the dung heaps of sarcasm laughing at politics,snobbery, money and finally at himself too.

There's a wide range of Payyan stories in this collection. The first part of Payyan's life in Delhi together with Colonel Renu was more like a series of connected stories. I found many stories same as parts of plot of the novel "Aarohanam" too. After this it becomes many unconnected stories moving from cities to Kerala. There are some connected stories in between too.

Not sure whether the sequence of the stories could be better arranged for a better reading experience.

Some of the stories have brilliance of satire and language, only V.K.N can achieve.

വി കെ എൻ എഴുതിയ പയ്യൻ കഥകൾ ഹാസ്യത്തിലൂടെയുള്ള സാമൂഹിക വിമർശനങ്ങൾളായ കഥകളാണ്. പലയിടങ്ങളിലും മിക്കകഥകളിലും ചിരിയിൽ ചാലിച്ച വിമർശനങ്ങളാണ് . 70 ശതമാനം കഥകളും ഗംഭീരമാണ്. ഭാഷാശൈലി, ആഖ്യാനം, പരിഹാസം എന്നിവ കഥകളെ മികച്ചതാക്കുന്നു. നേരെത്തെ പറഞ്ഞപോലെ 70 ശതമാനവും ഈ ബുക്ക്‌ ഒരു താളത്തിൽ രസത്തിൽ ആക്ഷേപഹാസ്യത്തിൽ പോകുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അതിനുശേഷം വിരസത അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. പിന്നെ വരുന്ന കഥകൾ അത്രയ്ക്ക് മികച്ചത് അല്ല, എങ്കിലും വളരെ നല്ല മികച്ച കഥകൾ ഉള്ളതുകൊണ്ട് വായിക്കാൻപറ്റിയ പുസ്തകമാണ് പയ്യൻ കഥകൾ.

Thanks to Storytel, I managed to zip through 432 pages of this classic through an aural experience :) In this book, VKN's character Payyan (which means 'lad'/'bloke') navigates the socio-cultural space of Delhi in the 60s. Little wonder this book is hailed as a classic in Malayalam literature.
