I read Seraph of the End - Guren Ichinose Catastrophe at Sixteen volume 1 by Takaya Kagami. It follows Guren and his retainers, Sayuri and Shigure, trying to manage being in a new school where they are bullied and looked down upon. Guren's end goal is to take down the Hiiragis and build a better life for the Ichinoses. Mito Jujo, Norito Goshi, and Shinya Hiiragi quickly try to befriend him. Guren pushes back their attempts but is quickly forced to work with them. During an attack on the school, he finds out that the world is going to end in December. I would recommend this book to people who like Seraph of the End, but the writing of the book itself isn't very good. This applies especially to the women. They are written in ways akin to a Wattpad fanfiction. Guren is also incredibly annoying to read at times. The writer repeats that he's strong and is purposefully hiding constantly, it quickly becomes very repetitive and not fun to read. On the bright side though, I like reading the bits with Shinya a lot. It adds a lot of depth to Mito and Norito's characters. The dynamic between the main characters is fun to read. Overall, the book isn't great but it's a good read for fans of Guren. Its a solid 3/5 book.
I haven't read Seraph of the End itself, so my only knowledge is through seeing the anime in Netflix (pretty good in my opinion).
I like the story of the anime, but i actually thought while seeing it that if there was a character i would want to know more about, that would be Guren. So, upon learning that these light novels existed i decided to read them before actually reading SotE.
As to this first volume. I do like the story and i do think Guren is a really great character with depth and all, so i did like the book a lot, but the first person narrative falls short at times. I mean, i get it that probably it might have to do with the audience it is destined but sometimes the descriptions just feel flat without enough depth, just because i person may be telling their own stories can't they just describe scenery and situations with more details?
Anyway, i do have that complaint but that didn't detract from the fact that Guren is really a pretty good character and getting to know how be got to be a bit of an ass is damn entertaining (and dark and kind of sad).
i mean, no it’s not a well-written story. however coming to ca16 (soon res19) from the manga is actually pretty fun. i had a fun and whirlwind kinda time reading it given the fast pace and character contrasts, plus the emotional nostalgic factor also added in to that. Shinya i love you 🪦
this book does make me see mahiru in a different light, though. Not a good one. not even remotely positive. but different and more human! which is weird and ironic but also very gratifying since her character is flat as hell in the manga in my opinion.
Guren es un gran personaje y Shin'ya es "my little meow meow did nothing wrong". Estoy perdiendo la cabeza
Not really what I was expecting for a prequel I guess???? I’m just glad to see shinya again, my sweet angel. Hope next’s volume is a little more entertaining.
Glen is adorkable, Mito is a tsundere, Goshi is a jerk, Shigure is a badass, Sayuri is as boring as hell and Mahiru is a bloody mary-sue aka Glen's waifu-goddess and love interest. also, she's worshipped by everyone in the school. urgh. seeing their younger versions is fun, but all the high-school drama is a bit annoying.
Shinya (amore mio ♥︎) is fabulous and witty as always. i hate the fact he's soooo underrated since Glen always hogs all the screen time, but i like their relationship. yaoi feels everywhere. i have to repress the fangirl inside of me.
The story's has beautiful story telling I feel like I am reading J.K Rowling. Or it's the fact that my Imagination is great. This books make you want to read what happens next ,every time you flip the page. Well for me it did . I want to get the rest of the books. Six in total but take my money. I hope they translate all the books.
