Renesans. Czy tylko jeden?

Jeden z najwybitniejszych współczesnych przedstawicieli nauk społecznych skupia się na jednym z najważniejszych historycznych zagadnień minionego tysiąclecia: czy europejski Renesans istotnie zasługuje na swą wyjątkową pozycję w centrum naszych wyobrażeń na temat kształtowania się nowoczesności? Autor stara się określić cechy charakteryzujące „nasz” europejski Renesans, zapoczątkowany w XIV w. w Italii, zwracając szczególną uwagę na to, co Europa zawdzięcza wpływom pozaeuropejskim. Bada następnie, czy i w jakich warunkach do zjawisk odradzania się oraz rozkwitu kultury (po okresach regresu) dochodziło w innych kręgach cywilizacyjnych: w świecie arabsko-muzułmańskim, w Indiach oraz w Chinach. I porównuje procesy zachodzące w tamtych kulturach z modelem europejskim. Podobnie jak w swych wcześniejszych książkach poddaje krytyce europocentryczną wizję historii i zwraca szczególną uwagę na rolę pisma dla dziejów społeczeństw i ich kultury.
Sir Jack Goody (ur. 1919) jest emerytowanym profesorem w St John’s College na Uniwersytecie w Cambridge. Od ponad pół wieku prowadzi badania z zakresu antropologii społecznej i historii cywilizacji. Opublikował m.in. książki: Logika pisma a organizacja społeczeństwa oraz Kradzież historii.

Sir John (Jack) Rankine Goody (born 27 July 1919) is a British social anthropologist. He has been a prominent teacher at Cambridge University, he was elected Fellow of the British Academy in 1976,[1] and he is an associate of the US National Academy of Sciences. Among his main publications are Death, property and the ancestors (1962), The myth of the Bagre (1972) and The domestication of the savage mind.

Jack Goody explained social structure and social change primarily in terms of three major factors. The first was the development of intensive forms of agriculture that allowed for the accumulation of surplus – surplus explained many aspects of cultural practice from marriage to funerals as well as the great divide between African and Eurasian societies. Second, he explained social change in terms of urbanization and growth of bureaucratic institutions that modified or overrode traditional forms of social organization, such as family or tribe, identifying civilization as “the culture of cities”. And third, he attached great weight to the technologies of communication as instruments of psychological and social change. He associated the beginnings of writing with the task of managing surplus and, in an important paper with Ian Watt (Goody and Watt, 1963), he advanced the argument that the rise of science and philosophy in classical Greece depended importantly on their invention of an efficient writing system, the alphabet. Because these factors could be applied to either to any contemporary social system or to systematic changes over time, his work is equally relevant to many disciplines.

Rinascimenti è un libro che si dovrebbe leggere in tutte le scuole, almeno in quelle Superiori perché dà una chiave di lettura sul mondo di oggi, un mondo che è in trasformazione rapida poiché vi sono spostamenti di poteri in senso longitudinale molto importanti. Presuntuosamente si è sempre pensato che il concetto di Rinascimento fosse un concetto esclusivamente occidentale e che avesse dato l'avvio alla modernità, al capitalismo e al mondo in cui viviamo oggi. Ma così non è. Vi è stato un Rinascimento lì dove vi è stata una tradizione scritta e le grandi culture orientali, l'Islam, l'Indiana e la Cinese, l'hanno avuta e hanno vissuto numerosi "Rinascimenti" nella loro storia e oggi ne stanno vivendo un ennesimo. Questo libro insegna a essere umili culturalmente e a non pensare che la nostra Civiltà sia superiore alle altre e che non debba nulla alle altre. Sono mille gli esempi che il libro offre e che possono essere considerati come debiti che la cultura Occidentale deve alle altre (e anche le altre sono debitrici a quella Occidentale): Dante, con molta probabilità, si è ispirato a dei testi islamici (e forse anche a una Sura dello stesso Corano) per scrivere la Divina Commedia , opera considerata tra le massime espressioni della civiltà occidentale.

Częściowo przeczytałam na pierwszym roku studiów, częściowo teraz przeleciałam wzrokiem. Szalenie ciekawa uwaga Goody’ego, że odrodzenie mogło być możliwe tylko dzięki wiekom zaciemnienia, kiedy kultura europejska odwróciła się od dokonań kultur uznawanych przez nią za pogańskie. To przez przechowanie, tłumaczenie i rozwijanie prac i tekstów przez kultury arabską, chińską i indyjską mamy współcześnie jak wracać do klasycznych autorów Starożytnej Grecji i Rzymu.

Decisamente leggerò altre opere di questo autore, perché è un tipo di lettura che ti apre la mente e ti fa ragionare sulla storia (una materia che ho molto a cuore). Un grazie enorme alla professoressa di Storia Moderna che mi ha concesso di scoprire quest’opera che, fin dalla prima citazione, ha catturato la mia attenzione.
Dovrebbero tutti leggere un libro come questo che discosta l’attenzione dalla storia che abbiamo sempre studiato e la fa leggere in una chiave diversa, da una nuova prospettiva che si tende ad ignorare o prendere sottogamba.
