TORNADO HITS is written by real-life reporter Hilde and each story in the Hilde Cracks the Case Series are inspired by reports she's actually done. When a tornado barrels through Hilde's town, she's on the case with the help of her sister. They're trying to solve the mysterious case of why fish were flopping in the middle of Orange Street.
The first thing they do is get all of the fish to safety! Then, they search for the reason live fish were in the middle of the road. It's a strange occurrence indeed and they must follow the clues to solve it. Hilde and her sister interview people in the path of the tornado and those who own a restaurant and might've lost a delivery of fish. But the answer lies in science.
I love how the illustrations fill each page and that some look like notebook paper with case notes. Hilde is an inspiration to those children who want to be journalists as well. Hilde uses her mind to make the right choices in each situation and I love how she shows the path to problem-solve.
Final Verdict: TORNADO HITS is perfect for fans of mysteries, weather, and journalism. Hilde just may be the new Nancy Drew!
I thought I would not like this series, that perhaps it was getting more attention than it deserved or that it would not be well written. I was a prejudiced jerk and I was completely wrong. This series is perfectly done from top to bottom. The formatting and style from the covers to the titling are well-designed. Though there are lots of characters, they each show a spark of personality and are introduced well. The clues, though perhaps overly repetitive, are well-placed and logical. I loved how the plot unfolded. Slightly complex for a second grade read, but the perfect introduction to such complexities. The extras are fabulous: a map, a list of vocabulary, the news report, discussion questions. I particularly liked the writing and the style and placement of illustrations was superb. I can't wait to find more readers to recommend this book for and to see the other books in the series. Well done!
{My thoughts} – Hilde and Izzy on the trail of a strange occurrence. While they were sleeping some fish ended up dropping all over Orange Street. They went out and rescued them, by putting them into their little sisters kiddie pool. Then they called Officer Pam to come and get them.
While they were out exploring the damage left from the storm they learned of a strange weather phenomenon. There was a lot that took place in this book that had kept the girls busy and on the trail to learning what exactly had happened.
Professor Henry was the one that was able to better explain what had taken place and he’d even taken the girls up in a helicopter ride to better explain it to them. Seeing is a key way for teaching and this showed them exactly how the waterspout had started out and then ended as a dangerous tornado.
I really enjoyed this book. I enjoy reading about the facts and learning about how the girls are able to report on the news around their neighborhood. I look forward to reading the next book in the series in the very near future.
This is a great early chapter book for those young readers who love a good mystery. Hilde, a nine-year-old budding news reporter, who is also the author of this book, is faced with a thought-provoking mystery when a tornado hits her hometown. The first hint of a notable news story begins when Hide is informed early in the morning by her big sister, Lizzy, that at least a dozen fish had been transported to the middle of a street near their home. Where did they come from? Was their mysterious appearance related to the storm last night? Does the pattern of multiple downed trees offer a hint to solve the puzzle? Follow Hilde and her sister as they use their investigative skills to hunt down leads, organize clues, and research background information in order to present the town with a very authentic news story.
Hilde's adventures, sleuthing and reporting are always good reading for a young reader just getting into her first chapter books. This is the 4th in a series by real-life child reporter Hilde.
