At twelve years old Perri Daniels is a tomboy at heart, fitting right on in with the guys. Instead of making up cheers and playing double dutch, like most girls her age, she spends her time fighting, hooping and playing video games alongside her best friend Plus. Living only two doors down from one another in the Millwood Projects of Prince George’s County, Maryland, the two grew up more like family than friends. However, as they later enter their teenage years, Perri discovers her secret desire to be more than just Plus’s best friend. She has a terrible crush on him that seemingly just won’t seem to go away. On prom night, the two surprisingly lose their virginity to one another causing their relationship to take an unforeseen turn.
On the exact day of her and Plus’s high school graduation, she discovers she’s pregnant with his child. Forced to face the hard reality that, in spite of everything, Plus merely considers her to be his “friend”, she gives up her own basketball scholarship and carries on. But as the years continue to go by, Perri grows into this vivacious woman and the two gradually switch roles. Emotions Plus never knew existed come flooding in when he realizes he may have to share his best friend with another man.
When Derrick, a tall handsome basketball player sweeps Perri off her feet, she finds herself torn between the two. NBA bound, Plus eventually goes on with his life, only sharing a daughter and a withering friendship with Perri. But when tragedy strikes, will the two circle back to the connection they once shared as youths, or will they let sleeping dogs lie? Find out in this urban adventure and romantic journey through time, Love and the Game.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, where she grew up on the outskirts of the city, Johnni Sherri has always been a true lover of the arts. As a natural born introvert, reading, writing and drawing had quickly become her favorite pass times. After graduating from East Carolina University with her bachelor’s degree, she remained in North Carolina where she currently resides with her husband and three beautiful children. And although today, she works in corporate America, she still continues to make time for one of her greatest passions, writing.
After secretly writing many short stories over the years, in 2016 Johnni Sherri began penning her first novel just for amusement. On a whim, she entered a short story contest in 2017 and won her first publishing contract. With this opportunity she was able to release her very first five star series titled, Protect My Sister’s Heart, which is set to be re-released in 2018. With her writing, she strives to detail the complex realities of young urban love in a way her readers can relate to. Her goal is always to paint a picture with every page, leaving booklovers yearning for more. However, fully understanding that Urban Fiction and African American Romance is not for everyone, she feels that if she can touch just one heart or mind with her work, than the late night typing is well worth it.
Great book! Kept my interest and a don’t want to stop reading type of book! 😊 I just loved Perri and Plus’s relationship overall!! Now it’s time for Plus to stand up to the Plate and win His woman Back!!! I hope a part 2 come out really soon!!! I’m rooting for Perri & Plus y’all!!! Y’all go read this book!
Now look! How can I enjoy a book so thoroughly even though it stressed me completely out. I don't like either of the main characters, to be honest. Not for each other anyway. And the one person I DO really like, I have a feeling he isn't who he appears to be. I don't know but I'm here for the entire ride.
Too late.... Plus. Let me say, I originally thought this was going to be about to male best friends because of the name Perri! Lol! I think stories like this happen everyday; male and female are best friends but they don’t look at each other, “like that” and usually it’s too late when they notice each other. It’s kind of weird that Plus and Perri have a baby together but I can’t say that I am not surprised. I feel like Derrick is not genuine, I feel it in my bones. I have a feeling Plus will not go down without a fight for his girl. On to part two! SN: not surprised about Tasha lol 🤨
That's how you start off young… So many reads and they have characters under 15 with all types of sex scenes and before it can even start I'm ending the read all together. This one did it right and it was great to follow along with. I thought for sure Plus was going to take care of Perri but he was so far up Tasha butt he didn't seem to care. I think she needs to keep it moving but I'm guessing she's going to slip up and end up with him. Plus came off as wanting her because others approved while Derrick didn't seem to care. Not sure what's going on with him and Mia but I really don't think he should deal with Perri because she sure to hurt him in the end.
1st read by this author. This was a nicely written beginning to series. Storyline held my attention throughout& had good character development. Perri went through a bit of extra drama when it came to Push. I thought Derrick lived up to his prediction. I can only hope Perri is serious about her choice at the end. Looking forward to part 2
Omg!! All the back and forth! I know that men are slow at realizing things but geez how slow can Plus be?! Love this coming of age story and cannot wait to see how this plays out.
I love this book from start to finish and can’t wait for the next book!! I can’t believe the way it ended it was a good case of not knowing what you had until it was gone!
Enjoyed this book even though for a second it reminded me a little TOO much of love and basketball. Story was well developed and not rushed. As much as i would like to see perri and push together, I don't think he deserves her. She was good enough to sleep with from time to time but oh she just the homie? I think derrick is great for her and just what she needs. They're still young and he had no problem stepping up and accepting her child and being loyal to her. I can't wait to see how everything plays out. I hope she doesn't hurt derrick.
This is a love and basketball love story. I just couldn’t put this read down .The childhood friendship that blossomed too so much more between perri and plus . This rollercoaster ride will leave you wanting more . I’m running to see how this next installment plays out . Please read
I’ve been waiting for this book to drop. It was definitely worth the wait. I’m glad that Perri and Plus FINALLY got it together, they’re perfect for each other. Thank goodness Jorell got it together when he did, because he was headed down the wrong way and fast. I loved him and Nika together, he was lucky to have her in is life. Everyone pretty much got their happily ever after. It wasn’t no over the top drama but just enough. It was good to see Plus finally talk to TK. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
Annoyingly Addictive! This is a review of all three books...
First book... Love it! It had the right amount of hood, drama and sex. Plus and his immature antics made me so mad at times that I was fully rooting for Derrick. But the heart wants what it wants and even though Perri tried, she just couldn't let Plus go.
Second Book... The Drama was still there (a bit too much at times), but what turned me all the way off was Perri and her back and forth feelings for Plus and Derrick. I felt bad for Derrick because he was a really good dude and seemed to care for Perri. But you know, hood chicks always want the dude that does you dirty. That situation at Christmas had me yelling at the book, "Derrick leave her behind alone!" LOL. I did like Nika and Jorrell's story also in book two. They had some issues, or more specifically, Jorrell had some MAJOR ho'ing issues. Tez made me mad too with his shenanigans... poor Myesha. Even though all drama made me want to stop reading at times, the books were annoyingly addictive.
Book three was good. My heart literally broke for Jorrell and his issues. I was so happy that he got himself together. Love the happy endings for everyone.
I feel like this could have been done in two books. A lot of the drama in the first two books dragged on and on and was frustrating at times. But, I still couldn't put the book down, so Ms. Sherri did her job!
Last note: If you haven't read Johnni Sherri's Meeting Noble Shaw, you should! It's in the Beard Gang books (a book of novellas)... that's what lead me to Love and the Game.
Perrie is such a tomboy and her best friend is Plus. In their neighborhood there is Perrie, Plus, Jorell, Tk and Jamal. This was the crew. Plus had a baby sister Aria and Perrie had a big brother Tex. Plus n Perrie lived two doors down from each other. U barely saw one without the other. Girls were envious and being kids feelings were not being discovered yet. When Tasha starts making a move on Plus Perrie does not like it. When you fall in love with your best friend life is going to be rough especially if he sees you as his homey and best friend or one of the guys. Prom night Plus has his date and Tez takes Perrie but that night will change everything when a beautiful baby is born, meanwhile Plus is at college and Perrie stays home and attends community college. Plus is still hanging with Tasha and now she tells him a big surprise. Relationships change as we get older, the Tom oh is slowly leaving and the mother is showing up. Meeting one of Plus’es team members Derrick is not on Perrie list but it happens and Derrrick is playing no games. Perrie new bff Nika is supporting her in her decisions and slowly pulls her out of the shell plus her and Jorrell are dating. One of the crew members will do some. Foul shid and a brother is removed. Plus is single and when he figures out how much he may be in love with his best friend he may be day late because Derrick is not playing! Part 2 please.
Perri and Plus are thick as thieves: from hoops to homework to hearts, they are BFFs. When time changes and feelings develop, will Perri have the will to let her feelings be known? Will Plus get past her tomboy persona to see a love like never before?
This was my very first read by this author as it was recommend by a friend. I must say the storyline kept my attention and had me reading into the wee hours of the morning!
The standout element of this book was surely the characters! Plus and Perri's journey from childhood to young adult years was filled with character development. There was a fair amount of anticipation as I waited for Perri and Plus to see beyond their friendship. Lort, these two are a mess and I loved the fact that Perri was such an unconventional heroine and just herself. She is so relatable and I was rooting for her every step of the way. Plus on the other hand, needed a basketball hit to the head, lol. I also throughly enjoyed all the sub characters. Ms. Tonya, Tez and the neighborhood crew added great plot progression to the storyline. Heck, even the antagonists were well written and was a great addition to the conflict of the plot.
The ending wasn't a cliffhanger per say, but it left me holding my breath. I can't wait to see how this author spins the rest of this series!
I'm so glad that Plus dodged the bullet that came with Tasha. Ms. Tonya called it, when she stated that Tasha wasn't the best person for Plus. Plus was a good guy, but I didn't like how selfish he was, when it came to Perri. Plus may have lost Perri for good. Instead of waiting on what Derrick would do, Plus should've been told Perri how he felt, after Tez told Plus how Perri felt about him. I'm interested to see how this is going to turn out.
Perri loved Plus all of her life, and with all her heart. When Plus needed someone, Perri was always there, no matter what. Perri even gave Plus her virginity. Plus always looked at Perri as his baby mother, one of the guys, or just his best friend. It wasn't until other guys started looking at Perri, Plus started to look at Perri differently. Perri had her heart crushed so many times by Plus, that she decided to move on to the person that loved her whole-heartedly which was Derrick.
Derrick liked Perri from the first time he saw her. It didn't matter what anyone else saw in Perri, he always complimented Perri on how beautiful she was. I loved that about Derrick, his love for Perri never waivered. Mia, his ex, thought that she could come back into Derrick's life, after being gone a year, and claim Derrick, but Derrick wasn't having it. He had who he wanted, but I wonder would Perri ever love Derrick the he loved her?
OMG!!! Where do I start? I loved this book. I loved watching Perri grow into a beautiful woman and I love how hard she loves. This book had me on a emotional roller coaster and I didn’t want to put it down. Even at work I didn’t want to put it down so I let Siri read it to me while I worked. I let Siri read it while I drove to and from work as well that’s how good this book is. This is the second series I’m reading from this author and I must say that I’m impressed, her writing is so visual and I feel as if I’m right in the room with these characters! Which is why I have to hurry and get to part 2... because I NEED to see what’s going to happen next!
On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being I realized I lost my last $20 bill– 10, I won $20 million in the lottery.
This book was alright for me. This book reminded me of the movie Love &Basketball. I think the story was dragged out for too long. I felt were the author was going but for me it was too much with Perri loving Plus aka Ahmed. It left me wanting to know more from the other characters. I felt like Ms Tonya and Mr Phillips were going to get together. How did Tez and his girlfriend get together. Most importantly how did Plus think it was okay for him to be with anyone and Perri should wait for him. I really like the fact that she told how Perri and Plus relationship was over the years. I like she started when they where young so you can feel how their feelings were. I did not like ending. I wanted to see what happen. It was a true cliff hanger. I am anticipating part 2 coming soon.
First time reading a book by this author and it was a good book. I feel as if it could've been a standalone instead of having a part 2. I like Perri I feel as if she's settling for Derrick, even though I like him as a person and he went after want he wanted from day one which was her. She's not being honest with herself about the fact she's really in love with her best friend and since she think he don't see her in that way she's grown to love Derrick smh. Plus, I like him but he messed up. He wait until Perri is interested in somebody else to start making his feelings known which now seem like it is to late. Overall great read and I hope last 2 don't take that long to come out.
Plus is not a true friend. Too many times he let people d go Perri in his presence and don’t say or do jack. Derrick knew her for two weeks and stood up for her to Plus and his friends that were also Perry’s so called friends. It sticks she had to sacrifice so much while he got to go to school and still screw that trifling trick Tasha. I’m mad he lied to perri about protecting himself always, putting her at risk. Too bad she trusted him as much as she did.
So Derrick proved himself to be worthy of Perri’s love. He stood up to his mom and ex and professed his love to her in front of her family. I know she will eventually break his heart and I’m not prepared for that but at this moment I’m happy someone is willing to love her right.
This author was new to me but I was very pleased with the way the book turned out! Overall is was a really good read & I think you will be pleased with the storyline. The characters were believable & I loved the detail put into the scenes to make you seem like you were actually there watching everything. Of course my favorite character was Perri & I was rooting for her & Plus. I think my least favorite(s) were Tasha & Derricks' mom...she was just nasty for no reason! I was hoping Plus would get his self together & realize his true feelings before it was too late. The ending was a cliff hanger & I hope thats not how everything ends.
I've only read two other books by Johnni Sherri and I believe I've been sleeping on such a talented author. I absolutely love this book. In a way I feel bad for Plus because Now he wants to be with Perri but he should have made an effort all those times he broke her heart. She's loved him since they were sixteen years old. Not once did he share the same feelings. She was always just his baby mama, homie, best friend. Until someone else took notice. I think Derrick loves her but if I'm being honest I really want to see her with Plus. Being she said yes to Derrick we'll just have to wait and see how it unfolds.💓💓
The biggest issue that I have with this book is the fact that it reminds of the movie Love & Basketball. Some parts of this book were identical to the movie with the exception of a couple of twists. I enjoyed the read. I just didn't like the fact that the storyline was kind of the same. This is my first read from this author, so I plan on reading more of her work. Again, the book isn't bad, this is just one of the biggest things that stood out to me. Now, had I not known about Love & Basketball, my thoughts would be different and I would be in love with it.
I have been getting into Johnni Sherri’s work since I read Heartbreak U and my love for that story is no different than this one. It was a different perspective reading from their childhood and not straight from the jump as young adults. The way she writes these love stories is effortless. I love getting to know the characters. There were sometimes I was annoyed but that just comes with the different personalities within the characters. Can’t wait to read pt 2!!
This book was so good. It felt so relatable and realistic. I loved the aspect of homies turned lovers but kinda not really. I loved how Perri evolved from her tomboyish ways into a mom and a woman and I understand her keeping her feelings to herself. Nobody likes rejection. Plus irritated my soul throughout the entire book because he does what a lot of men do. I don't want you but I want you available to me. Smh. Even thru all that, I'm still interested to see how this story continues to play out.
This book gave me Love & Basketball movie vibes. It was too similar to the movie and lacked originality just off that plot alone. Idk if I’ll continue the series because of that. I liked Perri character but hated to keep reminding myself that she’s young because of how gullible she is. I will say Nika, Jorell and Tez characters definitely intrigued me to wanna continue the series though. The editing was great and I will say this is more of a YA book than adult.
This was so good. I don’t know if this is it or if there is a sequel coming but I’m so happy right now. I will definitely be looking out for a 2nd book. I loved Plus but I felt like he should’ve been a man and just got with Perri. It took him being dogged out to see she was all he needed but by then it was already too late. I’m happy for Perri she deserves a happy ending!!!
This book was so good. I could not put it down. The story was so complete and stunning. I adored every bit of the complicated relationship. It was relatable and true.
Definitely rooting for Perri and Derrick. I loved that he wanted her wholeheartedly, just need Perri on the same page.
I'm not even mad that this is a cliffhanger. This was just a beautiful written story. I cannot wait for more even though I have to. 😐 Ha ha ha
I have to admit that this book initially caught my eye due to the similarities to the Love and Basketball movie. However, what held my interest were interesting characters and a well-written plot. My only gripe is that I wish the book were longer, allowing for additional character development. Brevity aside, I really enjoyed the book and hope a sequel will be released soon!
I’m not big on the Urban genre, but Johnni Sherri is trying to change that with each story of hers that I read. “Love and the Game” book one has me all messed up and immediately diving into book two. Wow... Plus and Perri is one of my new favorite couples. The chemistry oozes from the pages from beginning to end, and the supporting characters contribute vastly to their story. Dayum...
Plus treated Perri as his best friend for too long. Someone else came along and stole her heart. Perri cried many tears because she was deep in love with Plus and was afraid to tell him her true feelings. She put her feelings for Derrick on hold for the longest thinking he Plus would fall in love with her. He kept friend zoning her and she moved on. Can't wait to read part two!
