Aria is a paranormal romance/mystery aimed at Young Adult and New Adult audiences.
Summary:
Nineteen year old Nya Reed never thought her simple life could get so complicated so quickly, until one horrifying night with friends she won’t ever forget, or remember...
Nya awakens in the ER, bruised, bloodied and has little memory of the night prior. Her new friend, Matt, is dead and the police are baffled when they have no leads in the case. Nya struggles to piece together any fragments of broken memory she can salvage. Her only clue? A gold pendant in her pocket she’s never touched or seen before.
Worried that Matt’s killers will surface, Nya seeks comfort from her neighbor, Jack. He is the only person that can reign in Nya’s ever racing mind and bring some peace to her troubled and chaotic world. But Jack has issues of his own. His past is shrouded in mystery, his whereabouts are unknown and there are things about him that Nya cannot explain. As the romance blossoms, she begins to question if this new found love is truly her friend or her foe and is determined, now more than ever, to find out exactly who…or what…Jack truly is.
With her safety in danger, her very life on the line, Nya struggles with an unknown fate and a decision she knows she cannot make. Everything in her head tells her to flee from Jack and never look back. Everything in her heart tells her otherwise...
M.D. Luis was born and raised in California. She always enjoyed reading but was particularly drawn to the stories that captured her imagination and tugged at the heart. She finally put her own ideas to paper and released Aria in June 2014, the first book in a three part series. Her second book, Rain, was released in early 2015. She lives with her husband and three children in the San Francisco Bay Area.
This story starts off with a BANG! It has been a long time since the first chapter of a story hooked me so quickly and left me with so many questions. The story starts off with a traumatic incident that lands main character Nya in the emergency department with little to no recollection of the murder scene that caused the murder of a new friend and her own injuries.
This story is a paranormal romance that takes place within our world. I love worlds within worlds or when magical or mythical beings exists within our world! It seems so close to reality and makes me feel like it could be real, and I felt the realism while reading. The romance begins shortly after Nya’s traumatic episode when a new neighbor, the mysterious and handsome Jack, moves in down the street.
What I loved most about the romance was that it wasn’t insta-love, but rather was insta-attraction. Nya was cautious and hesitant in the chemistry between her and Jack and this was so relatable to me and not something that I read often in a romance story.
This story takes place in beautiful California and the descriptions of the homes on Nya’s street, the beach, and even the traffic were described so that I could SEE them and felt like I was in California with Nya.
Nya is a well-developed character and my heart ached for the loss that she has suffered in her life. She is strong, independent, smart, while also being protective of her innermost thoughts and feelings. Her best friend and roommate, Sam, is the perfect compliment and companion to Nya’s introvertedness. Sam is bold, loud, and fiercely protective of Nya. Sam does everything in her power to protect, support, and make Nya happy. The mysterious Jack is the definition of a bookish beau tease most of the time! He does just enough to keep Nya and the reader engaged and interested, while maintaining a sense of mystery and keeping his secret closely guarded.
Jack’s secret is at the core of this story. M.D. Luis wrote the perfect balance of letting the reader’s suspicions grow while not giving away too much. I especially loved that Nya’s discovery of Jack’s secret was primarily made through her own intelligence and her questioning of other characters who were incorporated throughout the story.
The things that kept this from a full 5 stars for me were the that I wanted MORE from some of the characters, in particular Sam and the friends in Nya’s life. (I’m a greedy reader and feel like I’m always saying that I want MORE MORE MORE!) I also felt like Nya was giving me an account of events at certain points rather than showing Nya’s experiences.
I had so much fun reading this story! It reminded me a lot of my experience reading the Paper Princess series, where I just devoured it and needed to keep going. It also reminded me a bit of Twilight (which I personally enjoy) in that Nya and Jack had this instant chemistry and Jack must keep secret what and who he is in order to protect Nya. The This story was so entertaining, suspenseful, fast-paced, and just plain fun to read! The ending left me NEEDING the sequels!
Overall, I recommend this to those who love paranormal romance, suspense, and stories about mythical beings.
Good characters, though lacking a little depth on some of the less major characters, Sam for instance. Even Nya is missing much of a background, hers is pretty much a part of the mystery, which I very much like. One thing Aria does well, is keep up a sense of urgency and realism throughout the book, with unanswered questions keeping you guessing. A very promising start to a series.
I love angel stories so I was drawn to this series, and quickly became invested in all of the characters. The supernatural status of each of the beings is kept somewhat under wraps and revealed in small ways throughout the story. I went from a hate/love relationship with Kieran, immediately embraced Sebastian and wanted Jack to succeed in winning Nya. I purchased the second book and am nearly through it.
One star lost for proofreading typographical errors, incorrect words, who/whom and shall/will errors, and ending sentences with a preposition. Examples: through instead of threw, distended instead of extended, and add instead of ad. A good editor would have caught and corrected these. These make for a rough read.
I purchased the second book and am nearly through it.
Aria, Aria the first book in the trilogy Rain, Ember grabbed me from the very first chapter and kept me invested in the rich characters throughout the series. M.D. Luis knows how to masterfully set the pace to keep you engaged and eagerly anticipating what the story line will bring. As a 50+ reader who enjoys YA literature, Aria delivered just the right amount of fantasy, romance, and character development to make me binge-read the series in a week. I had a hard time pacing myself to actually work, eat, sleep while enjoying the journey of the Nya and Jack. I recommend Aria, Rain, and Ember for all who enjoy reading about independent women, dedicated men, and loyal friends.
Exciting and suspenseful mystery becomes more complex as you read, could not put the book down wanting to find out what happened. Great character leads you can understand their emotions. Kept me turning the pages, can hardly wait for the next book!
*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is a book where the story kind of sneaks up on you. You think you know where it is going but then it throws you a plot twist and you realize you were wrong.
The beginning of this book is slow going but once Jack enters the story as a prominent character the story picks up. It's a romance for a long time but then it turns into so much more. I won't give too much away, so all I will say is that there is a group of bad guys and lots of action scenes.
Overall, it's an enjoyable read. I recommend it to people who like romance with a dash of the paranormal.
