When the wrong person's murdered, just who was the intended victim of death by chocolate cake?
Was it the retired mobster, Al De Duco? Could it have been an act of jealousy by his ex-girlfriend, Kitten Knight, or an act of revenge by Mario Carlucci, a long-time enemy of his from Al's days with the Mafia in Chicago?
Or was the intended victim Al's wife of two weeks, Cassie, the very popular food critic who writes the Food Spy column for The Seattle Times? But who would want to murder Cassie? Maybe it was Myles Lambert, the food critic she was filling in for at the Times and who was jealous of her success. Then there's the Gourmand's Guide to Good Eats food blogger, Jessica Simmons, who'd always hated Cassie. Or even the owner of Frogities Restaurant, Jules Moreau, who would love to see the bad publicity resulting from a murder at Le Bijou Bistro.
And what about the kidnapping of Briana, Cassie's daughter?
Join Jake and DeeDee as they search for a motive and a murderer!
This is Book 5 in the popular Northwest Cozy Mystery series by USA Today and Amazon Chart #1 Bestselling Author.
My husband also refuses to sit at the first table offered, New I am VERY happy with his decision 😊 However, who did the deed??? I enjoyed the story- and hope you make as much as… - and recommend the book.
I enjoyed this book. The book starts with the murder and then introduces you to the suspects and motives but what I liked was the fact that you weren't sure who the intended victim was meant to be, it certainly kept you guessing. The characters are fun, I especially liked Al and his mob connections, I know they are ment to be hard tough guys but running around after the wife carrying her things is just so funny and it is the way they are so straight faced. The mystery was interesting and I didn't see the twist coming. I haven't listened to the series in order but it doesn't matter because each book is a stand alone mystery but you do get several characters that appear in different books so it is great when you get to meet them again. With Cassie's birthday fast approaching, she decides to celebrate it with her husband and good friends Dee Dee and Jake by going out for a meal. As a good critic for the local paper Cassie knows all the best restaurants. But the birthday doesn't to the way they planned and a young woman dies eating chocolate cake. The woman was sat at Cassie's usual table, was she the target? And what about Al? With his connections to the mob he has his own list of people who would like to see him dead? Or was the target the restaurant it's self? It would certainly have a negative effect on business if they were found responsible for killing off a local celebrity. Can Dee Dee and Jake track down a killer before the killer tries again? Then the killer hits closer to home and Cassie's daughter gets caught up in the trouble and it's a race against time. I liked the narrator but her voice for Al made me laugh a few times. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I loved Al De Duco in the last of the Northwest series--a criminal with a heart of gold! He has given up his life of crime and married Cassie who he had fallen head over heels in love with at first sight. They were going out with their friends Jake and DeeDee to an exclusive French Restaurant. They were both excited to announce their marriage. Because Cassie wrote a food column the restaurant reserved Table 12 for them. At the last minute Al decided he did not want to sit at that table so they were seated where he could see the door in a more secluded corner.
Next thing they know is a woman-seated at the table they were supposed to sit at is choking--then immediately dies--just after being served and eating a piece of chocolate cake. It did not go unnoticed by Al that THEY should have been seated at that table!
Who was that chocolate cake meant for? Maybe one of A's old advisary's from his Mafia days--or a woman he used to know--or was it Cassie? Lot's of suspects--and why was Cassie's daughter kidnapped?
Can they find and save Brianna (Cassie's daughter)? Who is really behind all of this and why?
Excellent story! I couldn’t put it down. When I first started, I only had a few minutes but didn’t realize how hard I would be sucked into the book! I wound up reading it more than doing work I needed to do or sleeping. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and won’t be the last. I just loved the characters. Al was my favorite. I’d like to see a series done about his time in the mafia. Hint hint, Ms Harman. At first, I thought oh goody, we get to see who is doing the killing so this will be a book about how the killer is caught. Then with each chapter, there were more people to suspect. I loved how the author set this all up. It was so organized. I think it’s the best put together mystery I’ve ever read. I was dying to peek at the ending to see who was guilty but I didn’t. All the mention of food has probably caused me to gain weight from getting up to eat.
Murder at Le Bijou Bistro is the fifth fun mystery in Dianne Harman's Northwest Mystery series. Life is good for couples Dee Dee Wilson and Jack Rogers, and Cassie Roberts and Al De Duco. Cassie is now filling in for Myles Lambert as the restaurant critic for the Seattle Times and she's married to Al after a trip to Las Vegas. While the foursome is celebrating at a restaurant one night, a woman--Megan, dies at the very table that was supposed to be theirs! So who really was the intended target? Megan's fiance, Luke Robertson joins forces with Dee Dee, Jack, and Al to sort through the suspects to discover who the killer is! This book is really entertaining, especially if you've read the previous four books! I like the main characters and look forward to seeing what adventures they have in the future.
In this series DeeDee’s good friend Cassie marries Al, a character from a previous book. DeeDee and her beau, Jake meet up for a BD dinner with Cassie and Al. A murder occurs at the restaurant they’re dining at. Coincidentally, Cassie who part times as a food critic, was suppose to dining at that particular table. DeeDee, Jake, Cassie, Al and a new character Luke all get caught up in solving this murder. You know who the suspects are and one by one the suspects are dropped. There is suspense; in this book there is actually some shooting and a kidnapping too. They do solve the murder and all ends happily. I enjoy the characters and can’t wait for the next book. Of course, there are yummy recipes at the end of the book!
This was a very interesting cozy mystery because not only did it have the main character, DeeDee being told by her friend Cassie that she went to Las Vegas with the man who she just started dating who is a retire mobster, Al De Duco but also got married while in Las Vegas. DeeDee and Luke invite Cassie and Al out to dinner at Le Bijou Bistro where DeeDee is suppose to do a review of the restaurant and they now get a table for four. Big surprise, the table for two where Cassie and Al were suppose to sit; a chocolate cake was brought to them for desert and the woman dies. This has a lot of suspects and it takes awhile to find out who really was the intended victim. This will keep your mind working and focus off having to stay home for other reasons.
I don't give a lot of five star reviews, but this mystery story is definitely better plotted and better written than a lot of cozy mysteries that I have given four star reviews to. I love this author and this series, and this author has always been able to turn out well plotted and well crafted stories that keep getting better the more she writes.
I love the full cast of characters in this story, with all the connections between them. It highlights the odd twists and turns that real life sometimes takes. Some of them you probably will not see coming.
Another stellar whodunit by Dianne Harman. Dee Dee and Jake are dining with Cassie and Al when the unthinkable happens--yes murder! Realizing that the woman died at the table meant for them makes Cassie and Al think they were the real targets. The suspect list is long of people who might have reason to rub either the food critic or the former mobster out. Can Jake and Dee Dee solve the crime before the killer hits their target? Great suspenseful writing. Love Al as a regular character in the series. Kudos to Miss Harman for fantastic storytelling.
I liked this one a lot. The writing is great, although the killers motive was a bit thin, the characters are fun, some are quite cliche but that is half the fun of the book. A murder by mistake leads DeeDee, Jake, Al and Cassie into a slightly dark whodunnit. I like Dianne Harman"a writing style where she lays out the suspects as a flashback. Kelli Petroski does a good job with the narration and has a decent ear for accents. Highly recommended. I received a complimentary copy from the narrator and am leaving a honest voluntary review.
This one is a loser. As expected, unfortunately, the author focuses on the former gangster in a very trite, annoying fashion. Even worse, it's unbelievable that a guy who knows how to set somebody else's phone's vmail and is a jet setter doesn't know what Siri is.
The base mystery is Al and Lassie, Cassie, or somebody, go to a restaurant, change tables, and the woman who takes that table is poisoned. Then the cast of characters, including a couple of daughters, at in a paint-by-number fashion.
Who would dare use chocolate cake to murder someone? Was it done out of jealousy or revenge? Why would someone want to murder newly married Cassie, a very popular restaurant critic? Oh, and there is more ... why is Cassie's daughter, Briana, kidnapped? Lot's of mysteries to be solved here, so you best set some treats beside you as your scurry through this intoxicating cozy mystery. I loved it!
I just can't get enough of Dianne Harman, I love all the characters in her books but I especially like the addition to Al to these stories, it really gives it a twist. Even though I'm a cat person, I do love dogs and I like the idea of dogs in every book, Baltimore has become a main character himself. Again great book and I will be patiently waiting for more
Interesting fast read centered around Seattle, nearby islands and a cyanide poisoning. (Strange combination). Tons of characters woven into this setting. Kept reading if only to see how the author would bring them all together! Quick read. Will look for others by same author set in Pacific NW.
The main characters are DeeDee, Cassie, Jake and Al . They go out to dinner and ask for a different table than what put aside for them. When the girl who end up at that table ends up dead from poison before they leave, they start looking for who did it and who it was meant for. Can they figure this out before anyone else gets hurt ?
I didn’t see that coming and I like to be surprised. I like Ms Harman’s style of writing. She presents several people and their reasons for wanting to harm somebody or get rid of someone. And then she usually has Jake and Rob investigate. Everything usually follows the timeline. I really enjoyed this book.
This was a great cozy mystery! There were lots of twists and suspicious characters. The characters were enjoyable as well as the humor and dogs throughout the story. Someone died at the same restaurant that Al and Cassie were dining at. Was Cassie a target? Or someone else? Cassie’s friend DeeDee and her boyfriend Jake feel like they should join up to help Al do some investigating.
Murder at Le Bijou Bistro, book 5 of the Northwest Cozy Mystery series, is well written and involved. A surprise beginning for the main character is believable. With all the suspects, the mystery takes time to resolve. What an ending, on another island!
So far I have read the first 6 books by Dianne Harmon, and they are wounderful reading, theses stories are very hard to put down once you have started reading. I will read theses books again, and am looking forward to forward to read a lot more of her books. Thank you for showing me another great author
If you haven't read Dianne Harman's books yet and your like me and love a great cozy with characters you will love and a story that keeps you turning the page then what are you waiting for
Dianne Harman gives us another Northwest Cozy Mystery with an appealing storyline, very vivid characters, and yummy recipes. I look forward to the next and recommend this and all her series to cozy mystery aficionados.
A Good clean wholesome murder mystery. Full of twist and turns. Great characters, Dee Dee, Jake, her dog Balto, her friends Cassie and Al, new characters Luke and Harry. Plenty of suspects to keep you guessing.
I enjoyed this story of adventure and suspense, the author has done a great job of putting her characters together. The mystery is keeping you guessing while the romance and humor keep you interested in the tale.
This was another winner. She writes great colorful characters and great storylines. I highly recommend all her different series to everyone who love cozy mysteries. Diana Romano
I enjoyed this book immensely. I love the cast of characters, especially Deedee and Jake. I have read every one of these stories. They are delightful and very entertaining.
Would recommend this for teens and adults good story plot and recipes at end of book are awesome. Will not destroy the story by telling you about it just read it and enjoy
If you are looking for a relaxing romantic mystery, you have found it. The characters of Jake and Big Al are a fun numerous contrast. There always seems to be recipe I want to try also.
These books are fun to read. I'm beginning to be able to figure out who the killer is before the end. But I still love the characters and the way they come to the solution.
Not a fan of cozy mysteries, I read this for a challenge. Are readers not concerned about the lack of follow through with story lines in these things? Reminds me that sometimes challenges are to be avoided when books such as this type are on it. Sorry. I tried.
cozy series books are a great read. Always a great couple with a dog(s) she cooks and he is in law enforcement. Then there is a murder and a few likely suspects. Usually you can figure out who the killer is but it does not take away from the book. They are always a quick good read. I so enjoy them
