You are cordially invited to the wedding of Anthony Dennis Pearson and Katelyn Maddison Chambers on August 14th, 2017.

My heart breaks every time I look at the invitation. There he is, the boy who I had a crush on in high school, who grew into the man I love today. Andy Pearson, with his gleaming smile and his smoky grey eyes. Andy Pearson, who never looked down on me for being a scholarship student at one of the most expensive private schools in California. Andy Pearson, the hotshot lawyer, the volunteer for half the charities in the neighbourhood and the man who ran fun runs and bake sales for the other half, the man who frequently makes the Social pages in the newspaper for his humanitarian efforts. The man who considers me his best friend, and who thinks he’s my best friend, when I really wish he was so much more.

I wouldn’t feel so bitter, if it wasn’t for who was in his arms, clinging like a limpet in the picture. Kate Chambers. High school snob who never grew into anything but. The woman who can singlehandedly spend thousands of dollars on clothes, shoes, accessories, hair and nail products and the like. Kate Chambers, whose only thought for the poor and the homeless is her insistence that they not be allowed to sleep outside her apartment building. Kate Chambers, the socialite, the snob, the braggart, the brat. Of all of the women in all the world, Andy went with her. I’d be able to move on if he had chosen close to any other woman, but for me, Kate is the lowest of the low.

I put the note on my desk, and I collapse into the chair, staring at the ceiling. For a minute, I imagine how this would play out if this was one of those formulaic romantic comedies. I’d probably start by getting a makeover that completely transforms me, so we get that dramatic moment when Andy realizes how beautiful I am for the first time. Then there’d be some wacky hijinks that serves to show how much better I am than Kate, while making her look more and more bitter and unpleasant. Andy would still be going through with the wedding, but he’d confide in someone, probably the friendly bartender, how unsure he is as to whether he’s marrying the right woman. And then the bartender would offer him some sage advice about life and love which pretty much translates to ‘If you aren’t sure, go with the other girl’. And then, right when he’s about to make the biggest mistake of his life, I’d stop the wedding with some big, dramatic speech about how we’re soul mates, and he’d leave Kate to the applause of everyone in the church to run away with me into the sunset.
