New Amsterdam, the shining jewel of Georgia's East Coast, fell quickly. It boasted some of the tallest skyscrapers, the wealthiest population, and the biggest variety of cultural inhabitants. It was a bright October afternoon when the earthquake brought the city to its knees. The screams of the citizens were overwhelmed by the crack of the earth as a chasm between the city and Red's Ridge opened. Thirteen and a half miles long, a half mile wide, so much of the city gone in one instant. The sea roared into the chasm, the water disappearing into the dark depths. Something began to grow. Sixty years later, a young artist named Jane has lived her whole life in the shadow of Old New Amsterdam. A city shunned by the outside world, where certain people are called and never seen again. Jane, suddenly stricken by the calling, suffers a traffic accident that stops her from being one of the countless who have disappeared into the depths of that city. Jane struggles to pull her life back together, but the calling never ceases. Can she resist it long enough to find out the how to survive?
Fun quick read that I picked up at a convention two years ago. A bit rough at points (grammar/spelling, pacing, etc.), but it's a crazy novella that I enjoyed and kept me reading past midnight.
