Mountain Man Morgan, a name he adopts for himself after working around Morgan horses. His early home life, until age 17 where he heads west, to the mountains. His journey is told through his meetings with both bad and good elements of typical westerners of that time, Indians, Mountain Men, and Outlaws. Reaching the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains in the company of seasoned Mountain Men his goal is in sight, Rendezvous. His adventures include encountering grizzly bears, hunting buffalo, and typical arms, weapons, and accessories associated with mountain men and trappers. An encounter with a golden eagle, held sacred by the Crow people, wins favor with a party of Crow warriors returning from Rendezvous. Succeeding as a hunter and a warrior earns an invitation from the Crow warriors to winter over with their small band. While living in the Crow village we follow this band to summer and winter camps, buffalo hunts, horse stealing adventures, and with fighting their mortal enemies, the Blackfoot.
I grew up in Texas, so enjoy reading books that even have the word Texas in it. However, that was only a minor part of why I liked the book. I love books with strong, disciplined and moral characters. No need for curse words or sex. Just adventure and people helping one another get through some very difficult times. I loved the reference to the Bible at the end when Morgan named his son Ira. I will read more of Mackessy books.
A superb read. One that will keep you turning pages. Many adventures are incorporated between the pages. An interesting and nail biting read. Mike Mackessy has a way with words and knows how to use them. You cowboy fans will surely enjoy this book. So, "Giddy Up."
A great read. An unusual and highly enjoyable style of writing, the story's come to life and have real meaning. I would recommend anyone interested in those days in America's history not to miss this fascinating saga.
I definitely enjoy mountain men books, but Morgan brings a new meaning to those words in this compelling series of events! He makes friends easily, but if you are an enemy, the the excitement never abates!
Most definitely another five star masterpiece by Mr. Mackessy, as he leads us throughout the mountains of the West, when Morgan decides to leave the comfort of his family to follow his dream of becoming a mountain man! He is quick to make friends and the fun begins. A couple of older mountain men "take him under their wings" and introduce him to their Indian friends! This friendship leads Morgan into an ongoing romance with one of the Chief's daughter, once he is accepted by their clan, resulting in his son He Watches being born. Unfortunately Falling Leaf is killed during a buffalo hunt, and Morgan decides to leave the Tribe, and asks his best friend to take care of He Watches in his absence. This leads to another series of unending adventures Involving Morgan becoming a Texas Ranger, which is definitely worthy of following. Outstanding storylines from beginning to end, and the Author's successful selection of characters are unsurpassed in their commanding assignments throughout the entire book! This compassionately motivated story of realistically unending adventures will certainly appease anyone's desired expectations as one exciting episode after the other unfolds, with Morgan the center of attention! Most definitely recommend this outstanding western masterpiece to everyone, regardless of your reading preference, as Morgan, and his associates, throughout his unending desires to settle the ongoing hardships of living in the old American West! Failure to follow Morgan's exploits will be your loss!!!😃
In the past I have been known to chastise writers who don't realize just how big Texas actually is. I mean when they say they ride from Ft. Belknap to San Antone in two days. I ain't believing that and I say so. Mike Mackessy has written a book that is believable. Thank you, Sir. It did my heart good to read a book that I could actually enjoy. Looking for a good read? Look no farther, this is it!
What a wonderful intro into what it must have been at that time in our history in a believable way. Much imagination is displayed to keep as believable as possible. I found it very easy to be wrapped in the happenings.....Thank you......a must read for Western enthusiasts.
This Western Story is a Good read! I have enjoyed riding with this Author through lots of great action, learning adventures & lots of different emotions at different times! This Story is well written from page one through to the last page! This Book is worth your time to read & worth the purchase price as well! Enjoy!
Except for the poor editing, correct spelling on words incorrectly used, I enjoyed this book. I look forward to reading the full series. A true read on what the wild west was like. I would love to hire on editing books like these.
I look forward to future adventures. Ira is a strong character and will provide more exciting action. Morgan deserves a rightful rest, with more responsibilities given to his son.
While this story is fairly accurate describing the areas of the things described in it, I would have liked a little more activity between the people and a little less narrative.
Enjoyable read. Interesting characters and story. Read “Ira...” first, and did not think it as well written. Still and all, Ira comes across as his fathers son.
This story contains all the ingredients necessary for a good Western/Mountain Man story. It chronicles the difficulty and danger of daily life in the "settling" of the West.
An MM. Non-Fiction Short Story of the Mountain Man
Mm. has. penned this non-fiction novel about the Mountain men of he Rockies.. Although a short story you will find the short version of history and with the information many jumped into the wilds to become Mountain men, but never were heard from again. The men moved freely about the areas except when encountering angry Indians. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
