This was one of the best books about the British railways in 'modern' times (1980). Forty years on and it is showing its age, but is still worth a read. Note how station names (e.g. Harwich Parkeston Quay) and railway company names (i.e. British Rail) have been changed to protect their privacy. Marvelously, this book is dedicated the Great Central Railway. What a fabulous idea! I shall be dedicating my next book (a Sci-Fi Space Opera, with nasty aliens shaped like wheely bins) to the Hylton, Southwick and Monkwearmouth Railway.
