Survival Wars #4

Fires of Oblivion

Rate this book
Captain John Duggan rots in his cell, facing execution at the hands of his captors. Having discovered the secret which the Ghasts wished to remain hidden, he is left powerless to find answers to the questions which will determine the future of the Confederation. Elsewhere in the Garon sector, the Dreamers have been putting their own terrible plans into action. They possess the power to destroy entire worlds from unimaginable distances. Whilst humans and Ghasts descend once more into war, the biggest threat of all puts in motion a chain of events which will result in a hundred billion deaths if left unchecked. John Duggan and his crew are forced into a position where they must end not just one war, but two. The Space Corps’ most accomplished officer will be reunited with humanity’s most powerful weapon in a race to forge peace when a return to conflict seems inevitable. Standing above all else is the seemingly unstoppable Dreamer mothership, which Duggan must face if he is to succeed against the longest of odds. Fires of Oblivion is a science fiction adventure and the fourth book in the Survival Wars series.

About the author

Anthony James

Anthony James spent his youth reading what might now be called classic sci-fi and fantasy books. These days, he spends time in his study with the door locked against rampant and ferocious toddlers, writing books of his own.

That's the third person stuff out of the way.

For anyone who's read any of my books, you'll know that I write action science fiction that pulls no punches and which doesn't cram the good stuff into the last couple of chapters. The action starts early and it doesn't let up. I also take care to mix in plenty of humanity. The characters I write are all distinctly believable, often facing uncaring enemies and overwhelming odds. When they win, it's because they did their best.

Go on. Punch an alien today. Better yet, check out my series of books, each one filled with action, technology, warfare, aliens and against-the-odds survival. Lots of kick-back-and-enjoy weekend or evening reading.

Another very fast moving story, in fact it is almost too fast. I don't think it took me more than a couple hours to read this one.

Fires of Oblivion has several big plot holes, things that you simply have to ignore. Just jump on and go!

Author James has some more character development than he did in the third book and foreshadows a relationship he brings out more books 6 and 7.

8/10: Excellent read, well written, fell right into the fictional world created.

No quotes on this one, which is always an indication of how well I'm enjoying the book. I'm still putting this one on my Top Reads Bookshelf, mainly because I'm four books into the series and still reading. It takes a lot to hold my attention! But I am hoping for some ramp up in emotion for the next.

We'll see.

Book 4

Book 4 was a fun read and had errors throughout. The plot and characters have developed well. The plot is a bit predictable and the characters are simple, yet alwaysseems to get into trouble. The overall of each book is not too complex and yet exciting to read. I look forward to book 5.

Good read.

Good read with plenty of close calls and lots of action. So in the last book I had thought that they were fighting two enemies but after a big battle they are back to working together against the better advanced enemies. In this book they worked together to defeat an enemy mother ship . The problem is they don't know how many they have.

This series is straight space opera fun. The deep space battles remind me of the Honor Harrington series. Humans against aliens and both against superior alien technology that could destroy their worlds.

Book 4 is the best so far 2&3 we're quite weak but it picked up a bit and was better off for not skipping several years. I was getting a bit bored of James but started 5 hoping it will continue to improve

Massive Destruction

This installment is defined by the battles. One major battle which seems pointless and the last battle which will determine the trajectory for the next installment. Character development continues, with a new relationship developing between our protagonists.

A great series from an author I, frankly, had never heard of. I’m sure there will be a follow on series and will keep a eye out for it.

Only sheer stubborness is making me continue. The fact that I want to know how this ends is all that saves it from 1 star.
