Deja thought she could fear nothing more than the daily treatments she received during her imprisonment on the Concord. The horrible experiments which rack her body with unimaginable, searing pain. Struggling to outrun the beasts hunting her, fighting to outrun the light, Deja hastens for the only cover she can find — between the feet of a giant stone statue. Only statues aren’t supposed to move, or wrap you in their arms and carry you off INTO SHADOW…
I just wanted to let the folks know that I don't very often find myself on the ol' Goodreads site. I have too many social media accounts to keep up with and a new website.

This was my first book in the standalone series. It’s a Well written book with very well developed characters. I loved how courageous the heroine was. I also loved how different each heroes were and how she needed each of them. I wanted comeuppance for the horrible betrayal heroine suffered and also an epilogue. I wasn’t satisfied completely by the book hence the 4 stars. Like if they can have kids? And what happened to the other survivors etc. Recommended.
The Valos of Sonhadra series is a Sci-Fi alien romance with each of the 9 books in the series being told by a different author. If you have a favourite author of the bunch and don't want to read them all don't worry, each book can be read as a standalone. The background story for each book is the same, the heroine for nefarious and various reasons has been locked away in a prison ship and being experimented on by scientists. The experimentation changes each of the heroines in some way, which becomes massively useful when the prison ship crash lands on an unfamiliar planet. That's when the heroine starts to meet the natives. Sonhadra, the planet they have landed on, is inhabited by different factions of valos. The valos all have unique abilities and appearances...and most of them haven't seen a female in a long long time.
Shadowed by Isabel Wroth Valos of Sonhadra #6 4 Stars
Wins the Award for Best in the Series
I loved this one it was my favourite in the series. Because of the scientists experiments on her Deja is now extremely sensitive to light and she can't be in light without it burning her. Luckily she manages to run into some valos who live in an underground city. I don't know what it was about this book, but I really liked Deja and her three valos Azurryn, Izax and Arkham. I thought their story was romantic and sexy, with each of the three guys offering something unique. I haven't read Isabel Wroth before, but I am definitely going to be picking up some more of her books.
Overall thoughts: My favourite in the series, there was something about it that was a little magical.
Deja was imprisoned by her family. She had been on the Concord and was experimented on for six years. They were trying to make her invisible but instead made her skin burn in any light except the violet spectrum. When the ship crashed she tried to find a hiding spot that would shade her from the coming dawn. She saw her doctor and her assistant being killed by creatures. She was also injured and trying to escape the Ar'kena. She saw three giant statues and started to climb one. When her blood touched where his heartstone should be, he started moving. He then moved her hand to the other two statues and touched each in the same place before she passed out. She awake days later, totally healed. She had no burns from the sun, no cuts or damage from the crash. The three statues then came in and tried to talk to her. Their names were Azurryn, Izax and Arkham. She found out later that their creator took them and forced their shadow bodies into a stone exoskeleton. They were still able to change forms until she took their heartstones. There were around 700 Valos builders who were like zombies, doing nothing but building onto the city because that was the Creators last order. The giant statues were what was left of her warriors. They escorted her to her ship and were forced to hibernate because of the sun. Her order to them was to wait there for her children to come free them. She hid their heartstones at the city of noon, knowing they could not get them because of the light that surrounds the city. This book, even though it was about shadows, was lighter reading than a few of the others. I liked that there was people she could help rescue.
I love Isabel Wroth. I've only known of her books for a week. That's how amazing she is.
This one was too short for the amount of world building and character background that was included. It ended too abruptly, like maybe there's a sequel that will come out eventually? But this book is part of a series with different authors so I don't think there'll be a sequel. Shame, because all the ground work is there! We have a great heroine, three shapeshifting loving guys, and a huge stone city to explore!
I'm not interested in any of the other books in this series, so my 3 star rating isn't in comparison to any of those. My relatively average rating is actually a reflection of how much I've loved Ms Wroth's other books.
THIS IS THE BEST! I loved this SO MUCH. I love the city setting, the characters, Penumbra, and just about Everything in it. Wow. This story absolutely took my breath away. It was just wow. Too adorable and too damn sweet! I didn’t think I could love this series more but apparently this one takes the cake 💖
I actually didn't read this book series in order this is the last book I'm reading of the series and I have to say this is by far my favorite it has great characters and strong storylines like the majority of the books and it's different and fast-paced the characters have depth of emotion which is good it's not just all smart and that this has an Egyptian feel to it I would definitely recommend this book
Deja has always lived a somewhat difficult live due to the extremity of her condition. Her condition, her being an albino. She actually had it pretty easy except for that. Her family had more than enough money, but when she found out how some of that money was made, things turned ugly. Deja was sent to prisoner by her Uncle when he caught her snoopy where she didn't need to be. And being a prisoner with the right genetic code, she was forced to participate in a experiment. When the prison she is locked away in, falls from orbit, her life takes yet another drastic turn.
I loved this story.
The alien race in this story are opposite to those in Radiant. Thought reading Radiant isn't required to grasp this story. I love the concept of aliens being made from shadows and forced into an armor of stone. It's unique.
This is fast-paced. As well as a reverse harem romance.
I like how this wasn't one of those fast-paced stories that jumps right into the intimate aspect of the storyline. Nothing really intimate happened til pretty close to the end. This may have been due to the form in which the aliens were created.
I would actually love to see more from these characters. How life has changed for the aliens once their heartstones were returned. What happened in the city they built, now that they are no longer zombies practically.
Story of DEJA MARTELL, and the three warrior valo “shadows” of Sonhondra that she frees and loves in their shadow city of Penumbra: Arkhan, Izax and Azurryn. Smoke-like wraiths Warriors the former Queen/ Marsha Astaria enslaved along with hundreds of builder-wraiths, giving them stone exoskeleton forms.

“H]e drew back and explored his new form with curious pats to his own face, pokes at his chest and muscled abdomen. He even—dear god—palmed the length of his very human looking cock while making a sound of surprised delight. The flesh hardened before her eyes as he stroked experimentally.... “The muscles in his bicep and forearm flexed as he pumped his cock, his muscled chest and cobbled abdomen clenching in time to the pleasure his body experienced. “[W]atching a human shaped alien discover the joys of owning a penis was a sight to behold” (74-75/123)

“Arkhan followed the wordless tug of her hands in his hair, his cheeks hollowing as he suckled at her nipples, his tongue flattening the tender tips against the roof of his mouth.” (94/123)

“Blistering heat enveloped him, sweat breaking out on his body as Deja bent her head and sucked him inside her mouth. His hands curled into fists at the whirl of her tongue, flickering here, laving there, her delight vibrating through their blood bond.” (98/123)
Another installment in the Sonhadra series and I'm still loving learning about the different Valos and the cities they've carved out for themselves. The Creators still suck, but SO IT GOES, right?
Anywho. Deja. That lady has it rough. The experiments have left her with a complete intolerance for the sun and she's hurting when the ship breaks apart and she ends up on the planet's surface. Seriously hurting.
Fortunately for her, she met the Valos who live in shadows. Well, met might be slightly inaccurate. She climbed one of them thinking it was a statue and ended up bringing a powerful protector to life with her blood. He, in turn, brought his compatriots back and suddenly she has not one, but three guardians dedicated to keeping her safe.
Again, I'm loving the different aspects of the Valos we're meeting. Izax, Azurryn, and Arkhan were literal shadows before their transformation. I just...like that. I like how there are so many different interpretations of what these Valos can do and how they've been altered by their Creators. (Although the Creators are still buttmonkeys, but that's another story.)
Deja is a totally innocent victim betrayed by her family and sent to the prison space ship the Concord. Tortured for six years by Dr. Travis and Kiona when the ship is going to crash they put her in a pod. When the pod lands they Dr. Travis and Kiona start gathering supplies thinking they can continue Deja sneaks away climbing onto three large stone warriors statues the Dr and Kiona get devoured by the planets predators. The statues come to life and carry Deja to safety. As the translating implant starts to work the three statues Izak, Arkhan, Azurryan and Deja get to know each other. She want to help them as they helped her by getting these heartstones back. The stones had their emotions that are dulled and empty from not having them. Deja gets the stones and their non-corporal forms solidify and their emotions return. The chemistry between the four is so fascinating and sexy as well as their personalities. Enjoyed this story very much. The guys sound hot.
“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” Bleeding from the crash, running from monsters with deadly intent, Deja climbs a statue to get out of harm’s way. And it moves. Things begin to get very interesting! Deja Martell has a horrific back-story. It is hard to imagine someone acting in such a way to close kin. But now, she’s under the protection of beings with the same basic needs as hers: to be out of the sun. Izax, Arkhan, and Azuryyn are most unusual, super protective, and can be highly entertaining. I really like Deja. She cares about others (well, most others). Because she wants the best for her protectors, she performs amazing feats of derring-do to achieve her goals. They are well matched! I am loving the different realms of Sonhadra. Each that I’ve read is well-developed, creatively unique, and populated with beings I find fascinating. Well done!
So far I have been disappointed with this series. I like several of the authors featured, but haven’t been that pleased with the characters. This one blew it out of the park. There isn’t a whole lot of action, which I’m fine with. Sometimes it’s tiresome when there is too much action or strife. I liked this character. She wasn’t a soldier personality, but she didn’t come across as meek. Just a victim of circumstances. I liked the shadow man a was pleasantly surprised with how they planned out. I felt their personalities were well developed and the sex scenes were a nice change of pace. With the heroine being the one to take control instead of the men being dominating. If you’ve struggled with the others as I have then this one should make you happy. 10 stars if I could.
What can I say to convince you that this book is awesome and you should read it? Deja, the heroine, has escaped from the awful prison ship and is running for her life when a statue saves her. Arkhan, Izax, and Azurryn are Shadow Valos who were revived by Deja.
The Shadow Valos who live in Penumbra are following a millenia old instruction to build. It is a beautiful, mostly empty, city where Arkhan, Izax, and Azurryn take Deja after she is rescued. As the three males learn about Deja and she learns about them, romance builds organically. Nothing feels forced at all. The love story is beautiful and the sexy times are hot with an interesting twist!
As the book ends, I hope we see them again, in the evening light of the stars and moons.
The sample for this thoroughly sucked me into buying, and it definitely paid off. Although I love sci-fi romance, I'm not really into the whole ménage thing, which made me somewhat hesitant. So I was glad that for over half of the book it was more a straight sci-fi story (or sci-fantasy, actually) than a sci-fi-romance, and that even by the end there wasn't a lot of multi-partner stuff going on--thanks to a nifty plot point. I just really, thoroughly enjoyed it, enough to think I may need to go back and read the series from the beginning, despite my reservations regarding the whole "reverse harem" genre.
Okay I am so overwhelmed by how wonderful this series is. I simply loved the shadow men and Deja. She was truly a beautiful person and her men matched her so well. The world building continues with awesome new things to loved about this world. Every piece is so well written and intertwined with each book. I highly recommend this book and this series. Now onto the next.
I absolutely loved this book of the series. All of the light of "Radiant" started to make even my eyes hurt, so the cool, shades of the shadows had me sighing in relief. I also loved Deja's character. She seemed so real and personable. I borrowed this book through the Kindle Unlimited program.
I haven’t reviewed all the books of this series, so here I am, reviewing an author I’ve never read before because hot dang, I LOVED this one. I loved every bit of it. I’ll be looking into this author more because of this book. What did I love most? Well, I would say it was the way the author showed how love can and should be.
I'll admit, I was a little bit anxious going into this story. The previous two books Whirlwind and Radiant were greatly disappointing for me and I wasn't sure if I would continue this series if the next book ended up being a disappointment too. Thankfully, as you can see by my rating , this book was no disappointment at all !!
I absolutely adored this story. The shadow city kinda reminded me of a Fae city with all the fluorescent colors, flowers, trees, rivers etc. I could so easily picture the place and it was magnificent. The Shadow people (I forgot the race's name) have interesting abilities especially once they were freed. The alien nudist colony part made me giggle. — Deja was such a great character and I couldn't help but fall in love her. Even with everything she went through she was still able to be kind and giving. The three heroes were just as great. I really liked the author didn't push for a romance right from the start, she really focused more on the worldbuilding and the plot concerning the heartstones. When the romance finally took place it was sweet and felt completely natural. For once there was no talk of being "their one" or soulmate and no instalust just because she woke them up. It was a nice change.
+ I have to admit, I'm glad it didn't end up with a pregnancy like all the previous books. I mean it's great for the previous heroines , but after a while it gets a bit old you know. Plus, the shadow people aren't on the brink of extinction like most of the other Valos of the planet.
It was a peaceful read with no drama or action apart from the beginning regarding Deja's ordeal on the ship and after the crash landing when she run for her life. But after that it was the story just peaceful flawed like a river. I enjoyed it. — I have mixed feelings about the humans living at the crash site, on one hand I wanted Deja to help the women who were still abused and used as slaves by the guards and some of the scientists , but in the other hand I can understand her reluctance to bring them into the Shadow city. After all, we don't know which ones would trustworthy and which ones would become traitors at the first occasion. So in the end I'm glad the keeps an eye on them but doesn't intervene and let's them be. Fate will sort out the rest.
I'm a bit disappointed that there still wasn't a meeting with other Valos and the rescued human women but I keep my hopes up that on the authors will think about it at some point.
ALL IN ALL ;
Would I recommend this book ? Absolutely.
Will I reread it ? Highly likely.
Will I keep reading this series? Yes, in hopes that the next books will be as enjoyable and not start to become disappointments again.
This was definitely one of the better books in the series. I understand this was meant to be a collaboration between 9 authors. Beyond book 1&2, this one seemed to be the only one that actually took into account the other stories.
In this book, I learned why prisoners all have fancy translators. It was realistic and totally made sense. I learned how people were able to get away with inhumane experiments. I got a glimpse of what happened to at least one Creator. I finally feel like the series is coming together.
One pet peeve I have is non-humans looking like humans, especially their sexual anatomy. The author even addressed this issue in a realistic manner that left me somewhat satisfied.
Overall, I think this author did a decent job. I’d be willing to see what other sci-fi reverse harems she’s got going.
This book was not to my liking. While almost all of the books in this series have the same formula (woman saves alien(s), they then view her as their forever and everyone lives happily ever after) this book made it apparently obvious that the only reason the male aliens love the female human is because she brought them back to life after a millennia of sleep. It reads as a romanticized version of when someone who is rescued suddenly decides they are in love with their rescuer. It can make a cute story, but in this tale it only highlights the lack of a true functioning relationship, especially when an entire village makes themselves resemble the heroine in a multitude fo physical traits.
I would not recommend this book nor would I seek out other works written by this author.
So wroth either writes 5 star books for me or I dnf. It is such a marked difference its like they're written by different authors.
Her portrait of death series or her mc biker series perdition mc are both 5 star series and really excellently written.
This book, I didnt like the 1st book, written by a different author but saw wroth had written one and thought to give it a try. But the plot is ploddy n weak and frankly I'm bored stiff.
I just gave too many books to read to force myself to read books im hating.
Don't be put off by wroth though, try her other series, they are brilliant
I haven't read any of the other books in the series. These are marked as stand-alone reads and I would agree. I liked the premise and the way the story unfolded, though I do think it was a little too ..quiet isn't exactly the word I'm looking for, but there was a lack of conflict and angst that often made for an almost "too" quiet reading experience. It didn't stop me from enjoying the story as it was, but I kept waiting for something to happen; someone else to find the city, the heartstones to not work, the people to turn on her, something....
This author knocked it out of the park with this one!
I absolutely loved the characters the whole story was very thoroughly detailed painting a beautiful vibrant world...im one of those that doesn't particularly care for books that are too detailed but I promised myself I wouldn't let my quirks effect this rating so I still did 5 stars because yes it did get overly descriptive at some points but it was still very well written I would highly recommend this book to anyone
The power of unconditional love, respect and generosity always comes back threefold. Deja found her home in the dark where her generous and loving nature helped her create the family of her heart. Great story - and a reminder that the smallest of gestures can make all the difference in the world to the person on the receiving side of that generosity.
