For Mason, every smile is forced. Every joke represents effort. Bartending stands as a calculated decision to be a regular guy. In spite of his best efforts, life at such an easy pace is painful…because Mason was raised on a diet of crushing adrenaline and fierce, strategical thinking. His time in the Special Forces ended two years prior, but his drive and skill remained the strongest part of his being.
When his skills are needed again, Mason wakes up from a two-year haze and rescues the damsel. Mission accomplished. Victory had.
…Devastation returns.
Mason has no idea how to return to his everyday existence, not after flexing every strength he'd pushed aside. The simple truth is he can't. Balance, he decides, is the key: remain his joke-cracking self with his friends, and indulge in some ass-kicking on the side.
Together with Sofia 'Dig' DiGiacamo, Mason plans to eliminate every point of corruption they can uncover. A life of purpose fills him again, but the pressure threatens to rip him painfully apart. The turmoil stirs ugly memories of his Army career, adding an explosive element to his world.
Every day he fights corruption, every evening he fights himself. But still, Mason grits his teeth and grins. He's determined to keep his life, love, past, shame, desperate need, and suppressed anger all hidden behind his smiling, regular guy, bartender self. His fight remains an unending circle, and Mason battles on every front.
Book - Mason Series – Second Chance, Book 2 Author – Kemmie Michaels Type – contemporary romance Cliffhanger: No Overall Rating – 2.5 out of 5 Stars
Mason went back to his army skills when Cam was kidnapped and he continued pursuing the criminals after everything settled between Cam and Ledger. Sophia, "Dig" helped Mason and Ledger find Cam. She became close to Mason seeing him as a partner and she continued the investigation with him. Mason and Dig became friends and lovers while working to bring down the corrupt influential people from the city.
Mason started promising for me. At the end of book one he was in a cute relationship with Shelby and to be honest I really thought that their story will continue. The thing that I just couldn't make myself like was that Mason and Shelby's relationship continued for almost half of this book. KM took her time to give all the reasons and facts why they would never work and that was not good for the overall story. Instead of reading a Mason and Sophia story I had to read how he used, mislead, hurt and ultimately cheated on Shelby. I know these are facts of life but just because of that I couldn't like to new couple. An early break up would have solved that.
I liked the investigation and the way they followed through. I must say that the second attack and rape didn't work for me. I cannot believe that a police officer would ask and condone the killing of 5 men irrespective of how much she was hurt. I fail see how Bash's affair with the mayor's wife helped the investigation but hey, I got introduced to him.
Overall the characters were not my favorite. I hope that Kemmie Michaels finds an alternate word to "ornery" because it was overused. Same applies for the phoenix comparison. The usage of Italian was nice but not really grammatically correct.
I am not as excited with these series as I was with the Atlanta series and I am not sure if I want to continue with the rest of the stories.
“With a love this basic, this solid, this simplistically true, the pace doesn’t need to be slow or romantic to prove the depth behind the connection.”
“I can’t imagine living life any stronger than loving Sofia, than being loved by her.”
My Review:
The plot of Mason starts near the end of the story of Ledger, and was an active adventure romance chocked full of corrupt government officials, dirty cops, personal assault, rape, property damage, harassment, espionage, and murder. Mason is not a sweet and tender man like Ledger, although he is highly skilled, of genius intelligence, and loves his woman just as fiercely. Lucky for him, he finds a fierce woman to love (Sophia), who tells him not to use endearments such as calling her baby, or to dare tell her she is special. One of my favorite lines in the book, which Mason uses to tease Sophie with is, “Baby, you are so special.” Mason and Sophia’s love story is my favorite type, they are not fighting each other, but pulling together and finding each other in the process. The conflict in the story is not with each other but in righting a wrong, and I totally admire that trope. The writing and story-line are intriguing, well plotted, and smart. Callen is up next, and I am ready for the challenge.
Mason oh man I kept rooting for him and through his struggles with himself and his relationship at the begining of the book. He so didnt want to hurt his girlfriend and lose his friends in the process but his feelings for Sophia and wanting to be the real him not the fake him are causing him to war with himself so much.
Sofia is such a strong woman so full of courage and determinations even after all the hurt and pain she has gone through. How she struggles with doing what right and trying to keep her feeling for mason to herself.
These two are so perfect for eachother.
I wont lie when he cheats on his girlfriend and breaks her heart i cried so hard it was heartbreaking and then his full breakdown afterwards because of the guilt of what he had done. So very very powerful.
I just love this author and cant wait to read the next in this series.
Ok, I think that every man in the world should read this series and take tips from Mason and Ledger. Felt sad for Shelby and would love to read a happy ending for her with another awesome leading male. Keep up the good work Kemmie.
Mason and Sofia's story is very different but just as powerful as Ledger and Cam's. I loved every minute of it and look forward to reading the rest of this series
MASON is the follow up book to LEDGER. Mason is introduced in Ledger as a fun-loving, joking bartender. MASON picks up where LEDGER left off. Life seems to be moving forward for Ledger, Cam, and Shelby; however for Mason the events surrounding Cam’s rescue have awakened the real Mason. Mason and Dig’s begin working to bring down those involved in Cam’s kidnapping. Will he be able to keep the façade going and remain the fun-loving guy everyone thinks he is? Or will his past and military background make it impossible to maintain his life with Shelby and simply working at the bar?
Kemmie Michaels has done it again…LOVED this book! It is filled with drama, angst, love, and suspense. I feel like I have become friends with all of the characters. They are a fun loving bunch who always has each other’s back. I enjoyed learning more about Mason and Dig’s (aka Sofia). I will admit there were times that I didn’t love Mason that much, it took a while for me to understand where he was coming from and forgive him for what he did to Shelby. But in the end he redeemed himself and I loved him. Kemmie will have you wishing you could be his PHOENIX. I can’t wait for the next book in this series…CALLEN!! I would recommend this book to readers who like suspense and drama mixed in with a great romance story.
Brothers in arms…. Mason Pratt lived and breathed the Special Forces. The lifestyle fed his need for constant challenges and the adrenaline rush kept him on a natural high. Part of a close-knit team he had a family and a sense of purpose. When that ended he floundered, struggling to find purpose again. When he was called to help a brother he had a mission and found himself coming alive. He also met the beautiful and smart Sofia DiGiacamo and he found purpose as well. They met during the mission but their relationship grew from there both professionally and personally. Danger and events they couldn’t predict will challenge their physical and mental well-being – will they survive? This is the second book in the series and packs as much, if not more, action and emotion than the first. Mason’s easygoing exterior is quickly blown apart as he reveals his innermost struggles. The author knows how to build an emotional roller coaster as the intrigue and danger are high while emotions are forced to the surface. Mason is struggling and when Dig is in serious peril, he digs deep to do what he needs to do. The stoicism they both show during this heart-wrenching time is amazing and the final letdown after the fact pulled me right into the anguish they were feeling. This series his hitting all the right notes with me and I can’t wait for more.

MASON starts off where LEDGER finished but just from a different characters POV. Kemmie never ceases to amaze me with her writing skills. Her passion for writing is deep within every page. She is such a versatile author she can go from soft sweet romance novels to hot passionate panty wetting novels like the flick of a switch.
So on to the book; MASON who couldn't fall in love with him? I have to be very honest here and say I had a love hate relationship with this man and at one or two points in this story could have very easily strung him up by his balls! However he soon makes up for his pitfall and shows that even with a tough exterior you can still be full of sentiment. Mason takes a journey of discovery through this book and you feel yourself feeling sorry for him wanting him to realise that he his who he is and there is no point trying to be someone you aren't.

There were times I wanted to stab Mason in the balls, and he knows what times they were can't say it because it'll be a spoiler but the boy knows he's in deep crap. Sofia is probably thanking her lucky stars for the gift that was bestowed on her, "my God," she says when she sees the size of my c***. I've never been so grateful for my endowment." When her man doesn't move fast enough she gives a little encouragement, "she bites me again, digs her nails in hard, and grinds her hips against me. I'm not sure I've ever been this effing turned on in my life." If Mason had just done one thing before he let passion sink in I would have respect for him I mean he has a little but he would have more. I liked this book I'm hoping the next book doesn't have that element hate in it, and ill totally be yelling at the author after I post this review
Although Mason didn't worm his way completely into my heart the way Ledger did, this was still a damn fine read. Mason is a tougher guy to read and get under his skin. It takes a while before he is stripped bare for us to see who he truly is. He makes it tougher for us to like him through some of the decisions he makes along the way.
He has a good strong heart of gold, wanting to seek justice against corruption. It gives him a sense of purpose but his single-minded pursuit of justice pushes him further from Shelby and closer to Dig, Sofia, who is helping him bring down the bad guys.
As you get further and further into the story, Mason finds a way further and further into your heart without you even realising it. Kemmie Michaels has been able to create another awesome story, getting the balance between the action and the romance spot on.
I loved it! The series is just getting better and better. As with the first one it's filled with sexual tension, but also a little heart-break. So far Mason is my favourite. This story is not only about second chances, it's about the desire put put things right in the world and stop the corruption happening all around them. Dig is just frigging awesome. After she helped the guys out with saving Cam, Mason asks her to join forces with him to bring down the entire network of corruption that is happening right under everyone noses, but nothing is ever straight forward!
Oh Mason how I love thee!! Mason Pratt ex Special Forces is out to help bring down shady people. Sofia DiGiacamo (Dig) is a police investigator. Can these two bring down the higher up? This is a story with high emotions that will have your heart pounding. These two characters are hot as sin and when and if they can get together will be explosive. Come along for the journey of Mason and Dig. Highly recommended. Another amazing book by Kemmie Michaels.
