Another wonderful addition to Ms Scott’s ever-expanding CV, this is book two in the delicious ‘Russian Royals of Kuban’ series and it does not disappoint.

Prince Illarion isn’t your run of the mill Prince, he is a poet who has found himself in a bit of melancholic, writers block basically he has found himself in a bit of a slump. The words aren’t flowing like he would like, or how they should for that matter. He has a reputation for his scandalous and evocative poems and he is expected to do a reading, only he hasn’t got any new material. That is until he meets a certain Dove at a ball.

The minute he sees her, dances with her he is over run by inspiration. He soon realises that she just the thing he needs to bring him out of the depression. He wants her as his muse! My word what a stud! I am in love with these Russian Royal’s, they are supremely sexy. I love that rakish and mischievous twinkle in his eye whenever he says or does something scandalous.

Lady Dove (don’t you love that name?) is on the hut for a husband, or more accurately her Ducal parents are, and only the best will do. The only problem is because she is now classed as on the shelf – having failed to the succeed to grab herself a husband in her first season. Her parents have become a little desperate. She has always had fantasies about being whisked of her feet by a Knight in shining armour, she has a romantic heart, but she is a little disillusioned. Because of her dismal first season she has become a little jaded when it comes to courtship.

At first glance I wouldn’t have thought that two such different people could work as well as they do, those differences are very present when they first meet they are rather like chalk and cheese, but that soon fades as they begin to flirt and banter. Their mutual excitement and rebellious natures and chemistry soon comes to the surface and brings them in sync. They are a real fun couple and very flirty couple.

Scott has created two very spirited and likable characters whose romance is at first very sedate but soon sizzles and shimmers. The story was a little slow to start with, for me the start needed to move along at a faster pace. Yet, once our two, start seeing each other and getting to know each other. When they start to flirt, and banter their romance begins to flourish the pacing even’s out and becomes the engaging love story that we have come to expect from Ms Scott.

The Russian Royals of Kuban series is a wonderfully crafted, richly detailed and saucy series that is a pure joy to read. The romances sweep you away to another time and place, and I am so looking forward to reading the next.

Une histoire qui souffre de longueurs au début mais qui décrit les codes stricts de la haute société. Ou comment une femme tente de contrer son destin d'être mariée pour un titre. Sympathique même si j'ai trouvé la fin un peu facile.

I ordinarily would have given this a higher rating. The exploration of the entrapment of marriage for women at the time was interesting. The bond between the hero and the heroine was well done, with clear and believable reasons for their attachment to each demonstrated throughout the story. However, the illicit nature of their actions and the climax of the book gave me such intense anxiety that I did not really enjoy my reading experience. Historical romances often have the protagonists engage in illicit trysts that are unwise. However, as in those stories the potential ramifications are deemphasized or sometimes completely whitewashed, they do not trigger the same anxiety as this book did.

I would give it 4 stars for quality of story, but, since I base my ratings on my enjoyment of the book, I gave it 2 stars.

Fun and steamy romance, though sometimes guilty of sizzle rather than steak (in plot elements, not steaminess). The heroine is expected to make a good match, but the intended's worst quality is being dull. She falls for another, and there are many clandestine meetings, but apparently without real danger. And while the hero may not be the best match, he's royalty and eventually revealed to be much wealthier than anyone expected, so the good news is he is not marrying for money, but the bad news is she does not have any reason to not marry him - she doesn't sacrifice wealth for love. Some readers may not see that as bad news. Her tough choice is defying parental expectations, and even then the parents come round easily.
The climactic duel and outcome are particularly well-written, and I appreciated the poetry, and the importance granted to poetry and poets in this story.

I am not sure why I was so let down by this book, but I was. I felt as though it was not what I expected, somehow. Additionally, the two main characters felt very strung together in my opinion - especially in the beginning.
This was a very soft DNF for me, as I was nearly a quarter of the way to the end.

Too much poetry for me. But, a beautiful story none-the-less. Steamy too.

This was a fun book to read. I love the defiance that Dove has. Determined to marry for love not for money and status. Illarion the lost poet that gets under her skin. How can he not, he pursues her relentlessly. I enjoyed the gentleness of this story and the humorous moments as Dove begins to navigate the process. Being the second book, we also start to understand a little more of what happened in Kuban. Definitely looking forward to the remaining books in the series.
