I never wanted to be an FBI consultant. Too bad I didn't get a say.
It's my first day on the job, and a phoenix's guardian just ate it on the island's remote steppes, dozens of miles from the city. Well, murdered, by a rare, powerful, and scary form of god-killing magic, to be exact. And the phoenix just left with the body.
Not a problem, you say? I beg to differ. Turns out, the phoenix transports all the island's dead bodies and souls to the afterlife. And when the phoenix leaves, the bodies don't just start piling up. They start coming back from the dead. And let's just say dead people don't come back good as new.
Which means that, if I don't solve this thing quick, a certain rain goddess might turn the entire island to ash before the reborn army becomes too big to contain...

This is the second book in the Eden Hunter trilogy about a sassy Reaper of Souls, who is reluctantly employed by an ancient vampire warlord on a mysterious island near Hawaii. I was ready for a dose of urban fantasy after reading a lot of crime fiction recently, and had read the first one a few months ago. I definitely recommend reading Soul Storm first as there are ongoing storylines and character relationships which are only briefly recapped here.
A few months after the events of the first book, Eden is busy fulfilling her contract with Aldric to provide him with seven souls a week, but she has also been taken on by the FBI as a consultant. Collecting a fresh soul from a body dumped in a casino, she is summoned to the scene of an unusual murder: the Guardian of the island’s Phoenix, a fifteen foot high flaming talking bird that transfers souls to the Elysian Fields. He orders Eden to take the soul and investigate the death, then flies away, which has serious consequences - without a Phoenix the island’s dead will return to life, and if this gets out of control then the goddess Lucille has threatened to burn Atheas to the ground. Eden must outwit a bad-tempered FBI agent in charge, a psychotic shifter, her evil boss and the forces of Lucille’s Department of Supernatural Affairs to save them all.
If this sounds like complicated nonsense, it’s because it is, but it’s jolly good fun and I liked that while it blends all sorts of mythologies and fantasy creatures, the world she has created is quite different to any UF I’ve read before. There’s a refreshing absence of romance and a heroine with very few special powers or skills, so she does have to rely on her wits and grafting talents rather than magic to survive. She’s hilariously bolshy and takes no crap from anyone, but has a strong moral code and repeatedly risks her own life to help her friends. There’s plenty of action, it does get a bit gory but not gratuitously so, and a fair amount of swearing if these things bother you. Oh and I love Khan the cantankerous cat!
Eden Hunter has been a Reaper on the island of Atheas for over four years now. In book one you get to find out what happened to her, and her sister, and how she became a Reaper. She had to sign a contract to deliver so many souls a week to her vampire boss, each week. Her initial contract was for seven years, but events of the previous book have led this to be increased as well as her weekly quota. Although the island might be hidden from view to most, there are about equal numbers of both humans and magical beings on the island.
Somehow, a unit of the FBI are on the island and they want Eden to work with them, because of her abilities as a Reaper. The start of book two, has the FBI calling her urgently to a murder case. Once there, she finds out that the guardian for the islands Phoenix has been killed. But, the Phoenix will only speak to Eden. The only way the guardian could have been killed, was with a rare and obviously powerful, god killing type of magic. Unfortunately, the Phoenix then flew off with the guardian’s dead body.
This has left the island without a magic being to take the islands dead bodies and souls to the afterlife. And because the Phoenix has left the island, the dead bodies are coming back to life and piling up. Some of them more dangerous than they were before and some of them were dangerous enough already! This leaves Eden with pressure from all sides to deal with this case as soon as possible. But, to solve it, she needs to find out what happened to someone over four hundred years ago and where they are now.
This is, of course, as well as doing all her other duties and collecting enough souls to meet her weekly quota. If not, she may face a fate worse than death from her ancient vampire boss, Aldric. The whole island may be in danger if the case doesn’t get solved quickly, as the one God left to watch over the island, Lucille, a rain Goddess, could turn the island to ash if the undead numbers continued to rise and became too much to handle.
These books are easy to read and the author has made the island an interesting place with some definitely intriguing characters. Eden the Reaper, Cross the ancient treasure hunter, Aldric the vampire boss, Kai the hunky FBI agent, etc, all make for a full menu of events occurring throughout the book. Add in the mythical Phoenix and their important role in the transporting of the souls and dead to the afterlife, and you are getting into fascinating realms of reality. A really good read, I would read book one first, to fully know what brought the characters to the stage they are at in book two, but there are enough hints added to make book two a read alone book. I just found it easier to understand this way round.
I will definitely look out for book three in the series. These are the first books I have read by this author and I was pleasantly surprised. I didn’t want to put them down and just read through both book one and two in just over a day. Well worth reading and I would recommend to all. I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems, with the author including book one for those that want to read that one first, for background and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Eden Hunter: Reaper, gambler, FBI Consultant. She's managed to save her butt from the coals by outwitting a goddess with a grudge and her vampire boss in one fell swoop. OK, so she's still indentured to said vampire, still under orders to take souls without actually harming anyone (not that she would, but y'know, it'd be useful in her line of work to at least be able to fire a warning shot without blistering her hand). But being an FBI consultant could be cool, right? Except for the fact her first case brings her in on a little secret: there's a phoenix on Altheas, and it's celestial job is to ferry the souls of the dead to the afterlife. Problem being one of those souls is supposed to be the big bird's guardian - someone's killed her and now the phoenix won't do it's soul-ferrying duties until it has a new one. Fine until the dead start rising, and Lucille's paranormal law enforcement agency might have to take a scorched earth policy to the entire island. With her dubious contacts and FBI agent Kai in tow, Eden's got to think fast. Even if she didn't care (which she does), her soul-binding contract mean she can never leave the island. No one wants the place to go up in flames, but Eden needs to solve this in the only way she knows how: flying by the seat of her pants, collecting souls, and praying for a miracle. Or not, because deities can be a right pain in the ass.
Slower than the first book but bigger on character interactions, I still enjoyed reading this one. It could drag in places (like trying to work out exactly where the mystery element fitted in to the bigger picture), and I did get annoyed at how some things about the supernatural world just weren't explained as if I should just know that's how it works. I don't mind an unreliable narration of Eden's case because that's her character, but I needed to know things at the time rather than later on. I still don't get how she didn't know about the phoenix, and then was just... fine with it? Like it's common knowledge that they ferry dead souls..? Also those weird turns of phrase that peppered the first book happen more often, as if Eden's first language isn't English or else is extremely prone to malapropisms.
We got to know Kai better which is good, although I wish we could have seen more of Sierra considering how important her (after)life has been to Eden. That everyone takes Khan the talking cat in their stride is still weird. How the (apparently) mostly human residents of the island can miss everything supernatural going on is beyond me. Have we met a vanilla run-of-the-mill human character so far?
There's definitely been a build up of tension and scattered plot hints that tell you the finale to this trilogy is set to be one big showdown between all the warring factions and interested parties. Should be a good one to see who finally comes out of this with what they want...
** I received a free copy of Soul Fire for my complete and honest opinion. ** *** This review will not contain any spoilers. *** I was never given the option to choose my career. No, it was chosen for me. First as a Reaper and now as an FBI agent. A murder, a phoenix, zombies and that is just the beginning. If I don’t solve this case quickly, the island that I can not leave will burn. For real. Soul Fire is a 3-star book. Soul Fire is the second book in the Eden Hunter Series... Even though this book could be read as a stand-alone, the first book Rain Dance gives you insight that is very important in completely understanding the characters and setting of this book. Eden Hunter is a reaper... She has made many bargains most of them are to save her family and friends, they don't always benefit her. I very much love the characters in this book. Eden is a feisty, epic heroine. She really pulls this book together. She is able to play any part needed and makes you laugh, cry and scream. Kia and Cross are both fantastic additions to this book. Kia is the strong, silent type and Cross is the crass, extrovert. Without these two characters, this book would have failed. The world is very well developed. My problem with this book is how many dry parts there were. There were too many places where the story just dried up. However, in the end, I was happy overall and am looking forward to reading the third and final book in this series.
kindle unlimited, interesting premise, think have seen one other book {by someone else} somewhat same {sort of} premise so interested to see where will go, and so far book 1 and 2 out

Rain Dance (Sunshine & Scythes Book 1) CHANGED to Soul Storm Heat Wave (Sunshine & Scythes Book 2) CHANGED to Soul Fire
I love D.N. Erikson’s novels and really enjoyed Soul Storm, the first book of The Eden Hunter Trilogy. It’s no surprise then that I was delighted to get my hands on Soul Fire, the trilogy’s book 2. This book was a fun as anticipated. It is, quite simply, extremely imaginative and superbly written. It had just what I wanted and was well written and with a great plot and great cast of characters. I frankly adore sassy and rebellious Eden and love watching her take on all comers. The rest of the cast of characters is pretty amazing as well (and Kahn the cat is totally wonderful). But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to book 3.
Eden is one kick ass heroine who loves to live life on the edge and together with her talking cat and her FBI associate she gives us one hell of a ride! Constantly at war with the rain goddess and her vampire boss who had had her killed and brought to life to serve as his own soul reaper she lives to thwart them both and her best thwart was the one she played on Rayna the FBI boss who is her frenemy! Love how she set her up. I really enjoy the fun way D. N. Erikson writes about Eden, making this a light fun adventure which is so full of action from the word go. Looking forward to the 3rd book in the series in what I am sure will be yet another action packed, racy adventure story with maybe a little romance blossoming on the side!
First let me state, I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review.
Wow, this was gr8. I don't know how this author does it. Book 1 was awesome, and now book 2 is just as awesome if not better. I really love Eden & the rest of the characters. Kai the hot FBI agent who is human, Rayna the shifter, who's her boss in the FBI, Alaric, a vampire, who's also her boss and is the reason she's a Reaper to begin with, Lucille the Goddess of rain, who answered Eden's prayer, and is one sick bitch, Cross who's a hot, sexy immortal over 400 years old and has lots of issues, and then all the smaller parts played. I can't wait to read the next story. I recommend this read 5 Thumbs up.
I wasn't sure how this book would go. The first book in the series started off slow and then got better towards the middle. Usually when that happens, book 2 can go either way... either really good or fall very short. This one stepped it up a notch. I was actually drawn into the story right away. I didn't have to push thru any slow spots this time. I love the MC. She is sassy and rebellious. Then again, she really has nothing to lose as she has a soul-binding contract. I love that even when Eden is faced with a problem that will end badly no matter what she does, she finds a workable solution. Of course, pitting a vampire against a goddess could be hazardous to your health. I can't wait to see what mess she gets into next!
I love how Eden is strong, intelligent, brave, crafty and determined. What could be worse than a strange murder, dead bodies coming back to life, a curse and more. Eden has a lot riding on her shoulders with this case, good thing she's so brave and maybe just a little bit crazy. This book is action-packed, full of danger, vampires, shifters, magic, suspense, murder, a god, humor and a talking cat. Once you start reading, it really hard to put down, so get comfy.
The first book set me up, and explained all the soul reaping and different characters ...and there a lot of strange demons ...and the powers they all have!!!!!!
I love Eden Hunter. She runs to her own drummer, but she respects those that deserve it, sometimes.
I'm starting Soul Bite tonight. Sure wish there were more of Eden Hunter books'
I am an ARC reader for the author. A great second book, from beginning to end. Lots of excitement, twists, and your heart goes in your month. Surprises too. You really become Eden, and you will love the cat too, one of my favourites. My goodness what is going to happen next, cannot wait for book 3 Hoping you enjoy as much as I did
This second book in the series has plenty of action. Eden is a great character and one that I enjoy learning more about. She doesn't take no for an answer and isn't afraid of much. The storyline will keep your interest. I like the mix of paranormal characters and the author puts their own twist on everything.
I loved this paranormal thriller. This engaging storyline is well-written with action, mystery, magic and paranormal characters. The strong independent characters are defined and diverse. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
This book is very well written and the storyline will hold your attention until the last page. The characters are well developed and with magic, vampires, werewolves and murder- you won't be able to put this book down.
Great read. Same review for this and the last in the trilogy- Fast action, suspense, wit, and intrigue. Really enjoyed it. Thanks for just a tiny touch of love story. Nicely balance.
A good follow up in this exciting series. I enjoyed exploring the unique world where Eden has to struggle to stay ahead of the game - some interesting developments along the way kept this an interesting read.
