Splintered: A Civil War Saga

Rate this book
The second in a trilogy, Splintered follows the interconnections among a superbly memorable cast of characters during the Civil War as they internally and externally wrestle with why they're fighting, or why they're not fighting at all. Others will grapple with mere survival when the war alarmingly shows up on their front lawn or storefront. Asunder readers will delight in the return of abolitionists Cyntha and Joseph Favor, Confederate sympathizers Sara Reeder and Constance Carver, the continuation of opportunists known as the Spiritualist Fox Sisters, and a new storyline involving Wranglers who round up and move horses under harrowing conditions to supply the Confederacy. From its heart-wrenching opening scene of stoic grief in a Lincoln White House on the day of his son Willie's death to the final heart-wrenching battle scene and suprising assasination plot against Lincoln, Splintered proves itself a novel of sweeping, artfully rendered proportions, and one that is at times deeply moving, while always inteligent and socially conscious.

Splintered, the second book in Curt Locklear’s Asunder trilogy is a tale painted on a broad canvas, picking up where the first book left off. From the burnt out homes of hapless families, lost to the lawlessness of war to the hallowed halls of the White House, Locklear spins a tale of the American Civil War with a brutal honesty seldom found in period works. It is a tale told about people, neither completely evil nor completely virtuous. Just being people.

The story ultimately centers around the love triangle, readers began realizing will happen between Cyntha Favor, who in grief believes that her husband had died in battle, her husband Joseph who had lost his memories but is now slowly beginning to remember bits and pieces of his life, and Sara Reeder who has fallen hopelessly in love with Joseph.

A new set of characters has been added in this book, including a group of Texas Cowboys, driving a herd of mustangs to Fort Smith Arkansas.

Told in a style that follows along different timelines for each character, Splintered is a must-read for any Civil War buff.

Rarely does one have a chance to read a novel of this caliber. Called by professional reviewers an amazing tour de force. Impeccably plotted, thoroughly engaging characters, and a wealth of knowledge embedded in a truly remarkable story. Perhaps this is how the Civil War will best be understood. Not by revisionists, nor those with a 150 years old ax to grind.
You will not be disappointed with this historical fiction. It is a worthy follow up to the first book in the trilogy, Asunder. With heroes and heroines, real people, on both sides of the conflict, the story delves into the heart.
Read them both, and, like many readers already say, they ache for the third and final book.

Curt Lochlear's newest novel "Splintered" creates a total sensory experience for the reader. The author's powerful descriptive language awakens all the reader's senses, from imagining the smell of unwashed bodies to hearing the pounding rain to seeing the battles and sharing feelings of fear and horror as men unwillingly succumbed to death. Reading about the confusion on some of the Civil War battlefields left a strong impression on me, because many men went out to fight and die without knowing what they fought for. The peripheral characters such as the marauders and bounty hunters only added to the drama. Thank you, Curt, for writing another powerful novel!

Wonderful continuation!

The sneak peak at part three is quite a treat as well. I can only hope that perhaps this trilogy has a possibility of becoming a movie - hint, hint! The vivid journey makes you feel as if you are along for the ride every step of the way! I am looking forward to part three.

Splinters still scattered

Several story lines from book one are continued along with a couple of new ones. Goggles characters have me invested in what happens to them. I enjoyed the battle scenes. I'm waiting for the third book.

Intriguing

After finishing a hard copy of the 1st book, I was surprised and please to find the 2nd online. I was a bit confused by the new characters introduced but loved how their story wove back to those of the original story.

Book Two of Curt Locklear’s Civil War trilogy doesn’t disappoint. Our set of characters, representing virtually all aspects of that bloody, divisive time in our country, are drawing closer on their collision course -actually courses. On to Book Three to see what happens to them all.

Better than the first book. Hopefully the last one will bring the whole story together.
