Rate this book

By Seema Hingorrany. Grade A+
Starting with the front cover, it is extremely well conceived and designed. The image and the name of the book convey exactly what Dr Seema Hingorrany sets to achieve through her work – providing an insight into the problem called ‘depression’ and ways to fight it, thus, leading the reader to a happier, positive and stress-free approach to life.
You might be depressed and don’t know it yet. According to a WHO study, a mindboggling 35.9 percent of India suffers from Major Depressive Episodes (MDE). Yet depression remains a much evaded topic, quietly brushed under the carpet by most of us. In Beating the Blues, India’s leading clinical psychologist, psychotherapist, and trauma researcher Seema Hingorrany provides a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to treating depression, examining what the term really means, its signs, causes, and symptoms.
The book will equip you with:
• Easy-to-follow self-help strategies and result-oriented solutions
• Ways of preventing a depression relapse
• Everyday examples, statistics, and interesting case-studies
• Workbooks designed for Seema’s clients
With clients ranging from celebrities and models to teenagers, married couples, and children, Seema decodes depression for you. Informative and user-friendly, Beating the Blues is an invaluable guide for those who want to deal with depression but don’t know how.

Seema Hingorrany’s Beating the Blues
I loved the scientific approach to the subject which the author maintained throughout the book. The book is divided into three major parts dealing with specific sub-groups regarding depression. Dr Seema Hingorrany elaborates through different chapters the following topics: The truth about the problem, what exactly is depression, its roots and causes, the different categories of depression, the different problems and crises faced by people of different age groups, and the various methods of combating the said problems.
The term ‘depression’ is so widely and indiscriminately used in today’s world that we find it difficult to actually notice and track the symptoms when they appear in us or in anybody we know. The author begins the book describing what exactly ‘depression’ means in clinical terms and how it is different from the usual mood swings and bouts of blue that everyone experiences once in a while. She provides the reader with specific sets of symptoms that appear over time which can be detected as clear signs of depression in a person. She further categorizes them into various sub-groups depending on their source of origin and their intensity.
The best parts of the book are the numerous true life stories from the author’s own patients who were victims of depression, their testimonies and how they lead better and happier lives after undergoing therapy sessions to come out of the dark holes that their lives had reduced to. The author has also used several statistics, survey and research reports by various leading psychologists from around the world to help the readers get a more logical perspective of the problem.
I particularly liked the use of simple words, short compact sentences and the conversational tone taking the readers into confidence. The author takes the readers by the hand and helps them understand the problem and ways of tackling it when the symptoms arrive. Dr Seema Hingorrany maintains a very positive attitude throughout the book, giving the readers the ray of hope that depression can be diagnosed and treated, which is truly remarkable. An extremely well written book and a must read for readers of all ages.
About the Author:
Seema Hingorrany, a well-known clinical psychologist, EMDR therapist and trauma researcher, is presently putting in Mumbai. She is a many-faceted and extremely talented genius, having many achievements to her credit.
Being already engaged professionally on what she specializes in, the input she offers to such prestigious publications as Times of India, DNA, Femina, India Today, etc is remarkable indeed. She is credited with the honor of being the youngest psycho-therapist to have been quoted in more than 700 articles. This might be considered as a kind of record.
What’s more, she is also having a place on the honorary advisory panel of Early Childhood Association besides being an official psychoanalyst for Femina Miss India, offering grooming-and-personality-development services to the contestants.

A thing that is seen all over around us these days ubiquitously is depression and stress. People suffer from this noxious illness even without being aware of it for ages. Research has proved that about 35% of Indians suffer from depression. Many of them don’t know it, those who do either don’t take it seriously or don’t want to seek help professional help about it. Here, Dr Seema Hingorrany comes to the rescue of such people.

This book helps a person understand this under estimated disease better, and it would help you figure if you are a victim, and if you already know it, it’d make sure you see a doctor about it. The best thing about the book is that it tells us how to identify depression from normal life stress, for the term ‘depression’ gets misquotes a billion times in our day to day lives.

From explaining the symptoms to telling us stories of her own patients, Ms. Hingorrany had tried her best to get us acquainted to the malady and has made reading the book exceptionally interesting.

One more thing I would want to talk about Beating the Blues is the cover. Whether a person is suffering from depression or not, he would invariably get attracted to the book just seeing the cover. From my five year old cousin to my forty year old uncle, everybody would sneak a peek at the book just because of its cover, and most probably would comment on it.

This book is a bible for people who are under depression or know someone who is. It not only helps you understand the disease better, but it also helps you come out of it. It most importantly breaks the myth about shrinks. Dr. Hingorrany says that there have been times when a person would tell her that they didn’t see a psychologist because they were scared. Some would even fear that they would be given shock treatments right on the first day. Beating the Blues explains almost every step that comprises the treatment of depression. From Play Therapy to side effects of anti-depressants, the book has it all.

I recommend it to everyone who feels the need to know about the subject, and to the ones who wonder if they are the victims of the disease or know someone who is or might be. It is a Must Read!

This book effectively addresses the issue by foregrounding the fact that depression is not a sign of personal flaw but just another illness that needs to be treated with medical assistance. People who suffer from depression need to know that it is not an inevitable condition but can be tackled with familial love, medical care, confidence building exercise, positive attitude and a healthy work-life balance.

UPS and Downs are part of life.We all have to go through them. Some people learn to take things in their stride, others buckle under pressure. For a depressed person, life seems like A MAZE where one easily loses his way. The WHO has predicted that by 2020, depression will be the second biggest health problem and the leading cause of disability and death.

Beating the blues stands for the author's commitment to making the road to recovery for those who live with depression ,possible.I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Awesome book. A very helpful guide.

Most of us either have/are fighting depression, or are/have witnessed our loved ones fight depression in different stages of life.

Last night I read Beating the Blues by Seema Hingorrany, a book by Random House India and here is my review.

I strongly suggest every lay man to read this. The least one can do is, *not* tell a depressed person to snap out of it, or keep themselves busy and they'l be fine.

Educated yourself a bit, help your loved ones. http://sankshvet.blogspot.in/2012/12/...
