I was irritated while reading this book. I wanted to stop after reading the 8th page because the FMC was just too stupid.
She goes on a magical retreat because she doesn't know anything about magic but she's convinced there's some magic in her. So she goes and when she gets there she's told the retreat has been canceled but is given the option to observe what they are about to do as they don't usually allow novices to participate. Anyways, she starts watching them prepare to cast their spell and then all of a sudden she assumes command, she literally rips the spell from the leader's hand and performs it because something felt right. At this point I'm like that's pretty stupid but lets see what happens.
She starts the spell and as it happens she changes the women into zombies, yup, zombies. The zombies try to attack her so she joins them but ultimately she is saved by a magic caster. This all happened in the first 8 pages, if that's not a reason to quit I don't know what is. Surprisingly I finished the book. I didn't like it as much either as I kept reading, Penelope just did whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted because she felt it even though as she's said some of the feelings she has usually puts her in trouble but no, she doesn't mind diving headfirst into it.
Another thing I hated was the term of endearment the MMC gave her, it was turdswallop I kid you not, he called her that, gags. Yea, i'm stopping after book 1, thank you very much.
Heads up, this review repeats the word 'annoying' so many times, it will probably be... annoying!]
2.5 So hard to rate.
Ok, truth? I didn't really like it. The main character is very annoying, she's acting like an annoying little kid. Yes, she has a reason, she's been sheltered all her life, but she's still annoying as hell
I have no idea why I didn't stop reading this book. Actually, I know. It was the writing style. You, K F Breen, are awesome.
So, while the read was, in fact annoying, it did make me curious and it did make me want to try out the next book. How could I give this book less than 2.5 stars if it made me continue with the series?! Simple: I can't. So here's the rating you (kinda) deserve.
About the book, though. Likes: the plot has potential and the writing is awesome. Dislikes: very, very annoying characters! They're not exactly idiots, but they're not too far from it either.
Was it worth reading? I'm not sure yet, but seeing as I'm gonna read book 2, then I guess so.
The first 40% of the book are slow and almost annoying... Penny acts like a 13-year-old brat... Her mother is a hoot... Damn, the woman can talk shit and she is a badass...
Then the story picks up and after Penny embrace her magic and talent, it is amazing seeing her work with Emery... Their connection is amazing. Will read the next book!!
at first I thought that I didn’t like it just because I didn’t understand it well since I read it so fast, so I went back to the beginning and reread it. but no. it’s just that bad, and I definitely wouldn’t recommend it.
What often put me off in a book is the characters’ illogical actions whose roles are merely to push the story forward. You can request a free sample for chapter 1, in which Penny’s thoughts and actions extremely confused me, then decide whether to buy the book or not. #disappointed #not_funny #I_cannot_understand_you_Penny
"What are you, Penny Bristol?" he asked in barely more than a whisper.
"A girl that has had to find peace in the quiet times between getting into trouble and causing havoc."
I was initially hesitant about starting this next part of the series because let's face it; no one can replace Reagan. But wow, I am glad I gave it a chance because Penny is just as amazing in her own way! She is sweet, quirky, and absolutely hilarious. I could not put the book down and was regularly laughing at her antics. I highly, highly recommend.
For those of you wondering about Reagan, she does make an appearance early on in the book but it is very brief. However, we find out what secrets Darius was keeping in Seattle!
And how could I not mention Emery? Lets just say, he is a worthy romantic interest. Now go read it.

Reread - and it's still making me laugh 😅
Audiobook - Audible Narrated by Nicole Poole ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This made me laugh throughout the story.
But - I am seriously curious about Solas and her story.
August 14, 2025. Listening to this series is like visiting an old friend. It's like no time has passed, and we enjoy each other's company like there's no tomorrow.
Wow. Just wow. I really loved the Fire and Ice trilogy and was actually sorry to see that they were wrapped up so well because I wanted MORE of this world of magic and vampires and unicorns and the like. K.F. Breene delivers in her newest book Natural Witch where we get to find out Penny's story. She was briefly in Raised in Fire and again in Fused in Fire and hints were given to her being indebted to Darius but now we find out why. On the run from the Guild of Magic which she didn't even KNOW existed a few day prior Penny finds herself drawn into the world of magic and mayhem along with the secretive and cleans up rather well Emery, whose brother was murdered and who has been seeking vengeance ever since. In typical K.F Breene fashion, Penny may be naive, she may be new to the world of magic and she may be young BUT she is strong, both in character and magic. She is ok admitting she doesn't know what she is doing magically BUT unlike Emery who is scared and unsure of so many things she knows what she wants. And who. She also knows right from wrong and even when it may get her killed she will fight to ensure that she stays true to her convictions. I love K.F. Breene's female leads for this. They are not afraid of themselves, sexually or in matters of power. They may have doubts due to lack of knowledge but they are not wall flowers. Well except in how Penny is with her Mom. But her mom has all of the power of a tank in her personality, coupled with an intense need to protect her child and grief still from the loss of her husband. She does what she thinks is needed and no holds are barred. I greatly enjoyed this book and look forward to more in the series, hopefully coming soon.
Super sweet with a G-rated romance - at least in this first book. I've been looking forward to this miniseries from the bigger Demon Days, Vampire Nights series (awful name) ever since Penny Bristol's character was introduced.
Penny is a young (late teens/early 20s) witch with zero training but enormous natural ability. Her path crosses with the most powerful rogue mage alive, Emery Westbrook. Emery is on a rampage against the powerful Guild to avenge his brother's murder, and now Penny is caught up in his mayhem.
Lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas. Plus, Penny's mother is going to kill him.
This first entry involved a werewolf club owner with a mouse problem, and a den of vampires that turn out to be pretty useful in a fight. Down with evil magicians! I'm looking forward to Natural Mage next.
I was very excited to see the World of Reagan and Darius (WORD) continue...yeah I know that isn't the name of the series but it totally should be 😉
I found Emery very interesting. He has a controlled bad-ass vibe that I find very sexy. Power in spades and beautiful conscience. His backstory is well laid out and a perfect fit into WORD (yep I am going with my new name for the series 🤣) There is a decision he makes in the end which I surprisingly understood. Typically a move like that would have made me a bit peaved, but the way Breene laid out his story I understood it.
Penny is freaking hilarious! It was so refreshing and enjoyable to read something that added a great dose of humor. Loved this! Now the downside to Penny, I found her backstory to be long and at times redundant. There was too much information for me and I found myself at times wanting to scan ahead when Penny's past or present were being discussed. Not really sure that will make sense to anyone reading this but I am stumped for a different way to explain it.
The first quarter was far too slow and I could not rely on the main character at all. Indeed she is in the shadow of her mother every time they are together and her mother is quite unpleasant, not because she is presented as a bad person but because she is presented as a good one, while being a bad one. The main character is 24, her mother doesn't let her have her own place, make her own decision, work the way she likes or be herself. The mother has non filter, she go out in the street in underwear while insulting neighbours. And one of the first thing she said to the male character is don't touch my daughter when he did no such thing. She is also old fashion and it is something we can see in the main character as well. On the other hand, after Penny and Emery parted their way with the mother, she was suddenly more interesting, not weak at all and good at decision making, except the moment where she remember the way she was brought up and mess everything up. Overall, the book was not bad (except the mother issue, taking large portion of the story), it lacked some world building and could have had a better start if more forcused on Penny rather than others we couldn't connect with as we would never see them again. I will follow up on the sequel, as this felt more like an introduction than a first novel of a new serie.
The beginning chapters read a bit confusing to me. There also seemed to be a few pages missing or something? When Emery comes to her house and they decide she's to leave with him, something happens and when she comes to Emery tells her she's been asleep for 3 days? I re-read a few times and couldn't figure out what happened as there didn't seem to be any explanation.
When she leaves with Emery all of a sudden this very sheltered young woman is totally fine sharing a bed with him day 1. That relationship seemed a bit rushed....
The final odd piece of this book was when her and her next door neighbor/friend would go out looking for grammar mistakes? At least, I think that's what they were doing? It was another odd/confusing bit to me.
Also, the weird swearing thing got old. It read awkward and immature but not so much funny- more distracting to me.
I loved the Warrior Chronicles and have read her other books. I did think this book got better, more towards the second half but it still didn't seem like her best work.
Truly enjoyed this Second time reading The storyline’s and the fun and laughter the fighting are so good and amazing word building o adore penny and emmery they are adorable. Not at all repetitive spot on story line and just plain good story go and read this series
I REALLY enjoyed this. Maybe even to 4.5 territory.
It's been a while since I have read about such a fabulous, original and likeable heroine. She has such a great mixture of personality quirks.
Emery is great as well. A brilliant mixture of through and capable, but is awe of Penny. I was shipping them hard in this and I think the romance was done really well.
I'd also read and enjoyed the previous trilogy about Reagan and Darius, and it was fun to see them appear, Darius more than Reagan.
Sorry, I wrote the review for a different K.F. Breene book here! But I did also like this book. If nothing else, the fact that the heroine goes out with her bff every evening to correct the grammar on posters and advertisements would have won me over. This was an action-packed book with an interesting plot. And though her over-protectiveness was almost strangling, I loved the heroine’s mother. I’m definitely looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
This was a great start to a spin off. When reading the original series, Penny didn't intrigue me. I am happy I have the book a chance. Penny is hilarious and is learning to have some self confidence. Looking forward to Natural Mage.
I’m so excited that KF Breene decided to keep going with this series. I have read all her books, and this series became my favorite. This story is great. Penny is an awkward, sheltered woman who is trying to figure out about herself and her magical powers. When she meets Emery, her world is turned upside down. This story is full of action, lots of laughs, and awesome characters. I highly recommend it!
I enjoyed this third book in series. It was nice that the series focused on a different character and gave us some background. Good story, good characters and plenty of humor. I look forward to the next book in the series.
Ahhh, the K.F. Breene I love. Her hilarious, quirky heroine is so endearing, the plot is action-packed and full of interesting magical aspects. The romance is subtle, just the way I like in this type of book. Great read, I had so much fun.
Couldn't find a single thing to take a star off for!
Witch normally aint my thing so this was a total supirse how much I was into this!
Breene gave such personalities to all the characters every one of them shone. Penny, Emery, the Mother! Penny was wonderfully clumsy, quirky and funny. Emery was nothing like the alpha males I'm used to reading. He is happy to let Penny take front and centre, he never felt "possessive" or any of that alpha bull-shit. He is the one who is insecure not the girl!!! He was so sweet and recognised how special Penny was and only wanted what was best for her
The magic was a bit weird and more chemistry class than what I'm used to but I think I got into the swing of weaving by the end!
P.S This is a trilogy set during and after the events in Born In Fire. Which is Reagans trilogy (also a 5 star series). Most of the characters pop up in this book so it does makes sense to read that first BUT it's not essential I don't think. It's still easy to follow and it's own story ... you'll just miss out on the insider knowledge and that 'Oh there's Darius' kinda stuff....
3.5/50 This story is set in the same world as Ms. Breene’s previous books in the Demon Days Vampire Nights series and overlaps just a bit. But the focus is now on Penny, the untrained mage rather than Reagan and company. For those who have read the previous books the first part of the story can be a bit slow and feel just a little redundant in places. But, once we get to a point where we aren’t backtracking to catch up with the rest of the storyline, things take off and never slow down! I was surprised that Penny is 24 years old, however, as she is written to sound like a young teenager. This is really discombobulating and I had to keep reminding myself she is older than she is acting. Still, even with those couple of oddities, it is a an absolute delight to read and a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend an evening!
I really wanted to love this book like I do the authors Darkness and Warrior series but it was just eh. I enjoyed that it is a spin off of another of her series Fire and Ice and hope to see more crossover with the characters. The first half of the book was entirely to long and not edited well, with most of it primarily Penny talking to herself about how crazy/stupid she was. I didn't like all her self doubt and found it hard to get her attraction to Emery unless it's more of a school girl crush? I have it 3 stars because it did pick up in the second half, the characters had hilarious dialogue (although the whole no swearing / random words got old) and I'm curious enough that I look forward to the next in the series.
