Famous literary critic, George Dixon, is found dead. The murder weapons are several manila folders. The killer might be one person or a committee. This guy had more enemies than Julius Caesar. The only witness is PI Claire DeNardo, who spotted Iola Taylor, well-known author, fleeing the scene of the crime. Too bad earlier that day Iola became Claire's client. When Iola insists she was merely in the wrong place, wrong time, Claire sets out to discover the truth. Hampering her investigation is the involvement of Michael Bucanetti, the notorious gangster Claire tangled with in previous cases. He's throwing his mobster weight around and it may crush the life out of Claire and everyone she cares about. As the body count rises and the danger mounts, Police Detective Brian Corrigan pressures Claire to step back from the case and step up their romance. But can't a girl have it all? And stay alive?
Carole is the author of the new cozy mystery series, The Terrified Detective. She has also written a number of stories for Chicken Soup for the Soul and other similar anthologies. She's published several book of short stories. She currently lives in Dallas, Tx.
I get a kick out of Claire Denardo! She's not your typical sleuth. Her quips are fun and I like the fact that I can't figure out the killer right out of the gate. The writer keeps me on my toes. The story unfolds layer by layer. Not a simple whodunnit, there's plenty of suspects and a victim with more enemies than Genghis Khan. All in all this was an entertaining read.
Another complex series of murders fall into Claire's lap, involving a nasty literary critic, thugs, and more. Meanwhile Gino, a relative of her father, comes back to reclaim the PI office he left Clair when he moved on to Florida. If that wasn't enough to send her into a panic, Claire also has to deal with her aunt's engagement and wedding, keeping her family safe from a Jersey mob boss, solving a trio of connected murders, and deal with Brian Corrigan and the "L" word she let slip first. In her usual face the problem head on style, Clair manages to keep family first in this fun and fast paced complex murder story.
Once again, the lively characters make this story one that is hard to put down. I love Claire's spunk and ability to make a plan and stick to it when she would rather cower or hide!
I did not read the prior three books in this series. I suspect much of the background you would normally have comes in those books, so I was a bit out of sorts trying to figure out who was who, and why the characters acted the way they did. For instance, I found the main character to be moody and immature in her interactions with her romantic interest. If she is 18 years old, that is understandable. If she is 35, not so much. However, I have no idea how old she is, what her education level is, what she looks like, or how she came to be a private detective. There was no explanation.
I would not categorize this as a "cozy mystery"; the mob and hitmen aren't usually considered cozy material.
Poor Claire! All she wants is her own P.I. firm. Unfortunately with previous boss Gino deciding to come out of retirement she needs to find cash quick. Unfortunately her new gig, while it pays well, is a huge nightmare. When her first interview turns up dead, she has to deal with mobsters, the victim’s crazy sister, a not happy police detective boyfriend, & romance issues of her aunt & widowed Dad. However, Claire is not only determined & gutsy, but inventive in completing her mission. As a bonus there are some very delicious recipes included at the end.
Carole Fawkes has a way of keeping Claire in the middle of the action and constantly needing headache pills and little food. This time Claire is barley able too deposit her clients check before her client is charged with murder with Claire as a key witness, but things bodies start to pile up and a not so old nemesis comes back to terrorise Claire with death threats. All the familiar caracters with a host of new brings "Eclairs and Executions "to amazing life full of humor, mystery and all sorts of dramatic play. 🙄🤔☺ Kat
This is 4th in the series and the first time reading this author. The main character is Claire. She is running Gino Pi agency while he's been gone. She starts out with one client and then ends up being a witness to her client leaving a murder scene. Then she gets another client but somehow it ties into the murder. Then she might have a third client but yet none of them stay as her client and all the while her boyfriend the investigating cop keeps trying to save her. Can they figure this out before it's too late ?
Claire is a wonderful character that grows on you and you will love. I feel like I know her and her family like they are my own. This author does a great job of making them real, with real problems. Claire is timid, afraid yet loyal and always does what is right, which gets her into trouble a lot. It’s a great books d great series.
Even though this was the first book I have read in this series - and it was Book 4, It could easily be read as a stand-alone mystery. I thoroughly enjoyed it and enjoyed the author's style of writing (reminded me of a 1940's style gangster movie). I wil definitely be looking out for more books in this series.
I liked the way that the story was convoluted with twists and turns on almost every page. Claire seemed to crash into dead bodies as easily as most people bump into friends. I liked the vibes between Claire and Brian even though fate seemed determined to keep them at odds most of the time. I liked the humour and drama that made it such a good read.
Well the series name certainly fits. All through the story, Claire is terrified of the plans she makes in her job of PI. Like when she decides that she has to protect her family against the mob boss and plans to threaten him with her gun, but turns out protecting him and his wife. At times it’s hilarious. All in all a good mystery story.
Female, trying to start her own business, parents that love but have their own ideas on how her life should be run, a cop boyfriend that wants her to stay safe at home and the mob all stirred together into an interesting murder story. Who's killing who and why is a very tangled web.
What's almost better than a tough PI? A wimpy one, because she's like the rest of us. Claire DeNardo is no fearless detective. She's scared to death. But when police detective Brian Corrigan (her romantic interest) tells her to back off, she swallows her fear and keeps on delving into the case. This is an entertaining read.
I don't have any negative about book and author always have good positive about book and author. She did awesome job on mystery books and I want to thank her for take her time for make awesome mystery books. Also I would give books and author more than five stars for rate 😊
Not the best, but at least the heroine searching for clues is actually a P.I. I'm not totally sold on the relationship with the detective. Too much pushing at each other for my taste.
Eclairs and Executions is a good mystery. There are plenty of twists to keep you guessing. The relationship between the PI and the Detective was a little odd. The characters were interesting and unique personalities that added to the story. It was an enjoyable read.
The Terrified Detective Series, Bk 4, EBK-M, KINDLE, @ 2018, Read 8/15/21. Fiction, Mystery, Cozy. A caustic critic is murdered, and a woman writer who holds a grudge is seen leaving the murder site. PI Claire Denard works to solve. 3☆'s = Good.
Interesting plot with enough twists and turns to satisfy. Not too keen on the female PI that is so timid and needs a man around most of the time but it works just the same.
Quick read. Good mystery with added humor and predictable plot. Likable main character and supporting cast. Continues the love storyline from previous books.
Another good book in this series. Claire is a very likeable character, along with the other main characters. Light fun read with a lot of humor. Being Italian the characters make me feel like I am at a relatives.
Loved this book. This is the first book I’ve read in the series and it is easily a read alone book. If you enjoy quirky characters with twisted plots then you will love this book.
Wonderful story hard to put down. The characters are relatable and could be any one of us. Carole has a great way of weaving the story. I enjoy trying to figure out who did it.
Cute mystery with lots of fun characters. First time I've read anything in series. It reminded me of other PI mysteries but still enjoyed. No bad language is always a nice surprise.
