When you take a stroll down memory lane, you realize the most romantic journeys in life are the ones by train. In this collection, Yogesh takes you on a journey through India with different locations and characters.
Life is a like a train journey. Fourteen short stories about train travel across different places in India, and glimpses into the lives of some of the train travelers. Along with descriptions of sounds and smells that are typical and unforgettable in any train travel in India. Many of the stories recounted train travel experiences that I identified with easily. Enjoyed reading this wonderful collection by Yogesh - as I sipped through cups of ginger tea that perhaps once, for a fleeting moment, tasted almost like the chaiwalla's kulhad (clay cup) tea served at Kokrajhar train station.
The short stories in 500 Miles each offer insights into life in India, across several contemporary generations and in different regions. Though fictional, the environment and characters seem real, and like all good stories, they linger in your memory and emotion. ("Scotland of East" and "To a Beloved Daughter" were my particular favorites.) The voice of the narrator is authentic and nimble. The tone of each story varies, but each reflects values such as endurance, stamina, nostalgia, romance, self-awareness and adventure. This short and poignant collection is best enjoyed while traveling, or with a cup of chai tea.
