Books can be attributed to "Anonymous" for several reasons:
* They are officially published under that name * They are traditional stories not attributed to a specific author * They are religious texts not generally attributed to a specific author
Books whose authorship is merely uncertain should be attributed to Unknown.
I had a goal, way back in college, to read through the Bible 100 times by the age of 50.
This is number 80.
The closer I get to that goal, the less likely it appears that I will hit it on time. Even still, I hope the value I put on this book can be told through the attempt. In a far more important way, what I value is not even the book itself but the impact that the Bible has had on my life.
This is supposed to be a "review" of the book, but what right do I or any of us have to do so? What we should instead do is let the Bible "review" us. Is it changing us? Are we living up to the commands and dictates found in these pages? I know that I have a long, long way to go. But hopefully, with each time through, and with each daily reading, I become just a little bit more like him. Day by day, glory to glory, I pray that I am reflecting Him just a little bit better.
Really good book. Only got through Kings then I skipped ahead to the angry prophets. Hosea is the funniest. Leviticus is hilarious. The repetition involved in how to make the curtains properly around the arc of the covenant could be made into a performance art piece. I deeply love and respect how the ancient Jewish religious scribes and priests did not sanitize what my religion of birth calls the Old Testament. It's a profane, violent, morally ambiguous text that is just as tricky and bizarre and unnatural as life itself. Beautiful and true. Very much worth reading. I'll pick it up sometime after Kings when I get a chance.
What can you say about the Bible? It is a truly monumental work of faith. There is a bit of repetition in places but it is okay. It is the censuses that can get you down. The poetry of the Bible is magnificent.
Not my new favorite version. This version is close enough to the KJV to be confusing but not as poetic or beautiful.
But, it's the Bible and it's worthy. And this edition is free for Kindle (or at least it was when I downloaded it) so there is no excuse not to have a copy on hand.
First sentence: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
I bought a reprint edition of the American Standard Bible (1901) several years ago--probably eight to ten years ago. It included a reprint of the Concise Bible Dictionary published by Thomas Nelson. I did NOT read the Bible dictionary. Though I find it quaint to see the black and white illustrations. There is something cozy and quaint about reading a reprint.
I enjoyed the ASV translation. Before committing to read it cover to cover--though not in cover-to-cover order--I had read bits and pieces here and there. I remember reading the New Testament and the book of Psalms the spring I first purchased the Bible. But I never got around to tackling the whole book.
The translation is a revision of a revision that would later be revised. That is it is a revision of the English Revised Version first published in 1885 which was a revision of the Authorized Version (aka King James Version). The New American Standard Version is a revision to this one. As is the Revised Standard Version (1952). Now the Revised Standard Version has two offspring: the New Revised Standard Version and the English Standard Version. So directly or indirectly the ASV made an impact.
I believe the World English Bible is another direct revision of the American Standard Version.
One of the big differences you'll notice is that the ASV uses the word "Jehovah" instead of "Lord."
Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside still waters. He restoreth my soul: He guideth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou hast anointed my head with oil; My cup runneth over. Surely goodness and lovingkindness shall follow me all the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of Jehovah for ever.
This translation is widely available in e-book editions. Though I think print editions are harder to come by.
Sometimes I prefer this Bible over the ESV and sometimes it's the other way around.
Here I will talk about a song and that I'm sure it's about astral dreaming which used to be called astral travelling. The song is Take My Hand by the original Dido.
The Bible talks about different types of dreams and conversations. Satan was allowed to enter the heavens and talk with Jehovah until he was cast down to the earth. At least one holy angel told him, "Jehovah rebuke you".
A rebuke is a form of discipline. Can the lake of fire and or sulfur and or brimstone be likened to an everlasting smelting pot of discipline? For no discipline is joyous but grievous yet afterwards those who are trained by it yield peaceable fruit, namely righteousness.
Jehovah is the happy God. His will is that ALL attain to salvation. If Satan is dead last to learn from discipline then that was his choice. From a human viewpoint his scourging literally feels like permanent agony. He is the God of the Pharisees. John 8:44. He is the original false prophet. He is the God of wild beasts. He is the Devil, the original serpent. Revelation 20:10.
Jesus said that the tax collectors and harlots enter God's kingdom ahead of the religious leaders. This means that they enter God's kingdom last.
The Old Testament revision is very accurate by conservative Christian standards. It tries to stay true to the original Hebrew wording while using American English. The New Testament revision isn't as well done. The ASV is a 1901 American revision of the 1881-1885 English Revised Version, which was a revision of the King James Version. I found it more helpful for detailed Old Testament study than most modern versions. The English is a little awkward for casual or devotional reading though.

I set my goal to finish reading the 66 books of the Bible for a whole year. And YES, I just did. I had a lot of realizations and extra information that I didn’t know it is inside the book. 1) One of the disciple said that woman is not equal to man because the man was created first and he is the source of how woman is created. 2)God does not allow same relationship 3)God is forgiving but also harsh in giving punishment to those who are not following him. 4)the sacrifices of Jesus Christ is profound and he died for us because it is the duty that God the father gave him and for the sake of the humanity. 5)reading the bible is awakening and will still continue reading it.
Thank you Lord God for giving me strength, motivation, and wisdom to read the Bible because it is indeed difficult to comprehend because of the metaphorical words and even the profound meaning of the stories. Thanks to the Holy Bible application for the videos to give explanations of what the scriptures really mean.
I am reading these books for my soul awakening and repairing. I know I became so prideful of the achievements I had as a student but now that I became adult, I became the opposite. I had to go back to God the creator because I know He will save me from this emptiness. I am also confuse of how my career is turning and how my plans are going the wrong ways but I believe that GOD HAS BETTER PLANS FOR ME.
I recommend reading this book for your own sake.
We live below to prepare for the above. 🥰
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
First, I am not going to rate this book. If you have read from cover to cover you will realize there is some horrible stuff in there; and then there are some wonderful stuff. Don't get me started on the writing style/skill and the ability to tell a story.
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another." - - - Jesus, Bible (John 13:34)
This morning I have competed a book that has taken me years to read ... every word. I have created a spreadsheet to capture things I found of special interest; reference from other sources; versus that are referenced over and over; things I agree with; and things that fall under the "Hell No" category. For example under the "Hell No" column are things like, "Women should learn quietly and submissively. I do not let women teach men or have authority over them. Let them listen quietly." (1 Timothy 2:11-12) No thank you ... I've been quiet. That's not going to happen again. The funny thing is when you rely on someone else to pick and choose lines from a book you fail to get the full context.
This book is full of many references of false prophets, greed, vast amounts of cruelty, and the justification for the cruelty. One of the things I find interesting is that there are over 31,000 verses in the Bible. But over several years I have worked on this project, less than 3% of the verses have been referenced by various sources. Interesting....
Fundamentally: 1. You can always find a verse to prove your point if you want to weaponize religion and the Bible to beat people into obedience, if used as "the book of pick and choose'. 2. But, there is some fundamental understanding that I take away from my reading and that is we should be kind to one another. Some people are easier to love than others. But in the end, kindness is not too much to ask.
At first I was never really interested in the bible let alone God at first, but after reading the book I started to open my eyes to world beyond our world. A world where there is a figure above all below. God. Whenever I flip the pages of my Bible, The New Testament, I get a sense of calmness and reassurance that there is someone watching over me and everything will be okay. The bible eases the mind and teaches self restraint, limits, praise, and wisdom. I am not yet finished the bible yet and i am around a month total of reading time, currently on leviticus , and i have dedicated reading time in school and outside of school as well. I don ´ t regret choosing this as a book read and highly recommend it to others even if God or history does not interest you.
I am not religious. However, I wanted to better understand Western society. I therefore spent eight months reading every word of this version. Truthfully, I would have been lost if I did not find this website to help guide my reading: https://bibleproject.com/. They have entertaining videos that break down each chapter and this really helped me learn/study. My three-star ranking is because, educationally, I really got a lot out of reading the Bible. However, I cannot say I enjoyed every moment of this process. For me, it was sort of a grind.
I didn’t care for this translation. It was choppy and hard to read aloud. Parts felt more modern and then there would be a random “thee” or “thou.” It just didn’t feel very congruent with itself and I struggled multiple times with this translation. Not my favorite. Wait- the book itself is my favorite but not this translation. Hope that makes sense. On to another translation to read and will review in about a year and a half.
The Word of God, written by men inspired by God through the Holy Spirit. Bless God! I enjoyed the American Standard Version (ASV). It is so good, I have to start over. Blessed be the name of the Lord. The word of God is sweet no greater book exists. Now on to another version.
This Holy Bible is great for those that wish to know the origin of most Holy Bibles today, before any revisions, as the American Standard Version is what came after the 1611 King James version of the Holy Bible! Though being outdated with present times, the context can still be applied to present day using some imagination. A good Bible to read!
If you want to read about exotic lands, the people who lived in them. Kings, both good and bad. Healers and mircle workers. Christ Jesus the Messiah. His good works and His sacrifice for us all. Then this is the book you will want to rad and study. The greatest book of all books. Debra H.
I've made a goal many times to read through the Bible in a year, but never made that goal. This year I did, and I accomplished that goal with time to spare, to study different prophets and the history for the next few months. So thankful for this book....
I mean, it's the Bible- one of if not THE most popular religious text in the entire world. People have given up everything for it, died for it, KILLED for it. So giving it less than five stars seems wrong.
I had many challenges this year and at times, I fell short. I kept reading and catching up and now I made it to the finish line. I always get something different, something fresh. Thy word is a light to my feet and an ear to my pathway.
I Enjoy Researching the BIBLE, TORAH, Quran, and many Holy" writings to SEE if Politicians , Pastors, evangelical hucksters, con-men ,"people", Clergy and NEWS Personalities Have Any Knowledge of What they Speak
I usually read the KJV, but decided to read this version for a change. I know some may think I am crazy, but I think the Holy Bible is the best book ever written. There is romance, murder, adultery, plagues, brimstone and hail, history, and mystery. It is so good. I hope everyone reads it.
How can the Word of God be rated or criticized? I have one thing I would like to see. Breaking it into verses would make it easier to reference and study. Otherwise, this is an excellent translation!
