I learned SO MUCH about whaling in the North Atlantic by reading this book. It would not be a spoiler to tell you that the eponymous white whale is almost secondary to the reader's immersion into the whaler's life. Plus...you get to find out who Ishmael really is. Again, not a spoiler. Just a clarification to anyone who's ever heard the expression "Call me Ishmael".

MOBY DICK loses a star in my rating because it meanders, a few times, into some obscure stories and references that could easily have been omitted without losing any of the main story. Otherwise, first rate!
