The online course space is a $255 Billion industry with a capital B. More people are creating online courses than ever, but there’s a dirty secret nobody really wants to talk about. CUSTOMER CHURN. And yet, how many of us struggle to make our courses ‘stick’ with our audiences?
The online marketing space depends on selling courses and keeping our customers connected to our business.
Creating a course is hard enough, which is why so many half-baked courses never hit the market. It’s even harder making sure the course you create is what your audience actually wants from you. When you finally have your course ready, you probably have that sick feeling when your course fails to create a lasting impact.
YUCK.
This isn’t a nameless, faceless challenge; it’s affecting coaches, consultants, speakers, authors, trainers, small businesses, corporations, people you know and love. It’s because we’ve been relying on bad information. And, so many course creators are left wondering why. Nobody’s talking about why courses aren’t being completed.
Very few people are asking the right questions to figure out what we can do better to make our courses meaningful. We’re simply regurgitating the same bad info we heard from someone else who passed it down the line to us.
So, where does that leave us?

It all starts with The Completed Course with Dr. Carrie Rose
Just sayin.
A Comprehensive and Practical Guide to Getting Your Courses Completed
I discovered this book when Dr. Carrie Rose was a guest on DigitalMarketer. She's the genius behind their best course (a certification called "Content Marketing Mastery 2022."
The problem this book tackles is the the 97% attrition rate most online courses experience.
Rose addresses this problem through exploring the research into effective learning and interviewing countless experts about best practices for getting more students to finish your courses.
You will walk away from this book knowing how to choose your course topic and have dozens of ideas to test to make sure people finish what they start.
The book was easy to read. It is not a “how to” book but is a book offering extremely valuable insights about the entire online course system or industry as it exists today. There are valuable insights in this book brought out by many of the Experts interviewed by the author. I especially liked the Nuggets dealing with how and why the retention rate is, for most of the industry, 3%, but that for some whose focus is on Value instead of content, that rate ranges from over 60% to as high as 90%.
Interesting read but she fails to give to 'secret' to creating a profitable online course that people will completed. Dr. Rose has numerous links for you to go to her site and purchase information to get the information. It's clear this is a ebook to drive her website. Excellent marketing tool for those willing to pay for additional information. I thought it would be in this ebook...at least I read it for free with my kindle unlimited.
The book is full of tips about best practices for online course creation and engagement with students. The author is very experienced in the field of education and e-learning technologies. Also she explains the topics in a very organized and yet simple way. I totally recommend this book if you want to become an online educator or if you already teach online and want to improve your marketing efforts.
The book has some good points that can be applied in creating, marketing, and selling online courses. The author is 100% correct when she states that online courses are not dead; just bad online courses. This book will help you make your online courses both alive and thriving.
Dr. Carrie Rose's research shows 97% of people who buy online courses don't complete them. She explains in simple to understand language how to create online courses that your specific audience completes, applies to their lives, and purchases more of your products and services. If you do this right, word of mouth becomes your free marketing assistant.
Pretty average. One good tip was to create a FB lookalike audience based on people who already completed the course. Other than that I shelved this in the "motivational bullshit fluff" category.
If you are thinking about creating an online course, it's essential to understand what involved to ensure learners complete the course or at least have a successful outcome from the course. The Completed Course outlines many ideas about how to accomplish just that.
This book is not a complete "how-to," but it does include many ideas about how to create courses that learners will want to complete. The content in the book will give you ideas of what needs to be done and a jumping-off point for more research on the topic.
There are also links to more resources in the book. Clicking any of the links will take you to Facebook Messenger. There, you'll type the keyword of the resource you would like.
There were some useful nuggets of information in the book, including:
- "…course creators need to do a better job of holding people accountable." - "…in order for it [your course] to be valuable, it needs to be personal and relevant to that person or that audience." - "Determine your expertise and build products that solve problems based on your expertise." - "Whatever you do, always focus on your people."
Course creation is about solving problems. The Completed Course is about solving the problem of solving problems through courses that people want to complete.
