A story of overcoming contrasts from nationality in the extreme circumstances of war. I found the story rather plodding, despite the short length, and missed a pay-off at the end of the book
War without fire is like sausages without mustard

Finland initially held up quite well against the soviet invasion during WW II, something I read about earlier this month in Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar. Extreme cold and lack of sufficient preparation and logistics on the side of the USSR hampered the annexation.

In this context, Roy Jacobsen places a village idiot who refuses to evacuate ahead of the impending Russian invasion. Our main character proves to be far from stupid, with his village idiot persona only a guise to survive shifting occupying forces who raze his village Sumussalmi multiple times. The masculine taking charge of a group and everyone deferring to the main character is something I disliked a bit. Coincidences also play a bit too large role to my liking in The Burnt-Out Town of Miracles, albeit the English translation better captures the miraculousness of survival in the times the narrator finds himself in. What doesn’t help is that the other characters don’t get much more colour or individuality. Relations to the army are quite unclear to me while reading the book, with a lot happening unsaid or just implied. This is reflective of the guise the narrator tries to keep up, knowing and understanding more than he lets out, but I found it hard to emphasize with him. Even when starvation and frostbite rear their head, they seemingly don't impact him much. The ending of the book felt distinctively rushed, maybe showing the compressed nature a war-time situation brings with it, living from minute to minute and solely focussed on survival. Overall I enjoyed learning more about Finland's war history, but the way Jacobsen told the story didn't speak to me as much as I had wanted.

An enjoyable, melancholy book. Clear simple prose. Original story line.

The first three quarters, set in a town in Finland during the brief but ferocious Russian- Finish war. The author captures the sense of war from the viewpoint of a non-combatant, and this first main section of the book was for me a bit of a page turner. The ending was less impressive. The author manages to capture how an intense period in someones life can drag on for years afterwards and no reach "closure". He also handles the way individual stories get lost when some enormous event like a war happens. But the ending did not work for me. It was almost brilliant, but somehow too messy and I think the author was trying to deal with too many threads and characters. For me, a simpler shorter ending was required, or something more drawn out. Nevertheless a worthy read - and probably more 3.5 stars than 3.

Köyü Fin ordusu tarafından işgale uğrayıp, bütün köy halkının köyü terk etmesine rağmen köyünde kalan oduncu Timmo’nun başından geçenleri anlatıyor kitap. İçten içe köyü ve köydeki evleri korumaya ant içmiştir. Ancak savaş bittiğinde köye geri dönen köylüler savaş sırasında Timmo’nun yaptıklarını anlamayınca kaldığı toplumdan dışlanır.

Yıllarca kafa karışıklığı ve utançla yaşayan Timmo, herkesin kendi hayatında bir kere bile olsa kahraman olma hakkına sahip olduğunu düşünüyor ve Finlandiya’nın kış savaşı hakkındaki gerçekleri ve Rus arkadaşlarının kaderini keşfetmeye karar veriyor.

Jabobsen’in Norveç dilinden ustaca çevrilmiş romanı, savaşın arka planından biraz daha fazlasını sorguluyor, insanın kendi içinde olan savaşını.

Roy Jacobsen'in Türkçeye çevrilen diğer kitaplarını okumuş, kusurlarıyla beğenmiş biri olarak Oduncular'dan sonra maalesef aynı noktada olamayacağım. Ana karakter üzerine kurgulanmış metin, bir çuvala doldurur gibi gelişen mesnetsiz olaylar üzerinden ilerliyor. Ana karakterin anne babasından kalan bir çiftlik olmasına rağmen neden bir oduncunun yanına yerleştiği, savaş esnasında herkes göçerken neden kasabada kaldığı, karşı tarafa yardım ettiği, bir grup oduncuya kol kanat gerip adeta bir kahramana dönüştüğü ise tam bir muamma... Hatta kahramanlık hikayeleri gerçekten bir yerden sonra inandırıcılıktan epey uzaklaşıyor. Ne yalan söyleyeyim hikayenin sonunda tüm bunların birinin rüyası olduğu ortaya çıkacak diye bir fikir de geçti aklımdan. Yorumlarda ise bazıları ana karakterin zeka yönünden eksiği olduğunu da belirtmiş ama bunun kasabalının klasik bir alay etme yöntemi olduğunu düşündüm. Öte yandan kahramanın yaşını da hikayenin sonuna kadar kestiremedim. Bir ailenin yanına yerleştiğine göre reşit değil sandım, sonra kahramanlıklarına bakarak bunun yaşı geçkin herhalde diye düşünürken sonunda hiç tahmin etmediğim bir yaşta olduğunu öğrendim. Aslında irdelemek istediğim çok fazla şey var ama sonuç olarak söyleyebilirim ki elimizde bir anlatıcı, yaşanan büyük olaylar ve tasviri hak eden şahane bir doğa var fakat bunların üçü maalesef aynı potada erimiyor.

Timmo, Sovyetler’in Finlandiya işgali sırasında küçük bir kasaba olan Suomussalmi’de yaşayan bir oduncu. Ailesini kaybetmiş ancak hayata tutunup kök salabilmiş güçlü bir karakter.
Savaş onu da değiştiriyor, her şeyi değiştirdiği gibi.

Možda realno 3.5 zvezdice ali pošto sam i Čiku zaokružila na veću, i ovde ću.

Godina je 1939-a i Rusko -Finski rat se zahuktava te se Timovo selo, kao ratna zona, evakuiše i spaljuje kako bi se nadolazećoj ruskoj vojsci onemogućio pristup zalihama i skloništu od jake finske zime.
Timo, seoski drvoseča, suptilno predstavljen kao neka vrsta seoske lude u očima seljana, odbija da napusti svoje selo i ostaje da dočeka Ruse, pomiren sa sudbinom.

Iako ne mogu reći da me je knjiga potpuno očarala, proza je vrlo lepa a knjiga je stilski
moja šolja čaja. Jednostavna, melanholična, mirna na površini, bez suvišnog patosa.

Ratne knjige često narativno grabe čoveka nostalgijom, jakim emocijama, ponekad je to i nužno da bi knjiga izbegla opasnost da pređe u raport, ratno novinarstvo.
I zato dajem sve poene ovog sveta ovoj knjizi koja je uspela u tome da opiše čoveka u ratu, tako hladnokrvo a tako poetično. Bez glorifikacije moći, hrabrosti , žrtava a opet ne bežeći od njih.

Osećam se kao da nisam kvalifikovana da procenjujem verodostojnost nekih mogućnosti jer o ovom delu finske istorije ne znam skoro ništa da li bi vojska zaista dozvolila Timu da ostane u selu, da li bi ga Rusi zaista poštedeli i dali mu toliko slobode kao ratnom zarobljeniku i da li Tima zaista Finska vojska po završetku rata ne bi streljala kao izdajicu nakon saradnje s Rusima. Malo je navučeno ali u mojim očima to i nije toliko strašno.

Nešto mi je falilo da se oduševim, nisam još shvatila šta ali stilski i vizuelno nemam zamerke.
Knjiga kojoj bih se jednog dana vratila, da vidim da li sam nešto propustila.

Oduncular’ı okurken Türkiye’de ormanlar yanmaya devam ediyordu. Dolayısıyla kitapta da alabildiğine kesilen ağaçların, insan eliyle patlatılan ormanın, ormanlarla yaşamayı bilmenin ne menem bir şey olduğunu düşündüm. Kitabın etkisi, memleketin yanan ormanlarının verdiği çaresizlik yüzünden artmış oldu.

Ralf Rothmann’ın Baharda Ölmek’ini ikinci kez okuduktan sonra fazla zaman geçmeden bunu okudum, benzer temaları nedeniyle ikisini yanyana düşündüm, düşürdüm. Her ikisinde de felaket bir savaşın ortasında kalmış karakterlerin çaresizliği, inatla bir şeylere tutunup insan kalmaya diretmeleri var. Rothmann’ın karakteri geriye dönük olarak babasının askerliğini hatırlar/yeniden yazarken, Jacobsen’in karakteri savaş kapıyı çalmadan hiçkimseyken, savaş sırasında tutsakların yaşamlarını değiştirip kimsenin fark etmediği biçimde “kahramanlaşıyor”. Kahramanlık herhangi bir şiddet içermiyor, sağ kalmaya çalışarak ve sürekli odun kesip parçalanan nesneleri tamir ederek kahramanlaşıyorlar.

Oduncular’ın orijinal başlığı çok güzel: Yanıp kül olmuş mucizeler kasabası. Romancıkta bir yerde geçiyor. Peki mucize nerede. Mucize tarihin “büyük harfle” yazıldığı gibi Kış Savaşı’ında bin küsur asker ile gerilla savaşı verip elli bin askerlik Sovyet ordusunu Finlandiya için en hayati noktada, Suomussalmi kasabasında yenilgiye uğratmasında değil, savaştan yirmi altı yıl sonra Timo’nun hala anlamaya çalışacağı gibi, kimselerin o alevler arasında fark edemediği çabada.

Rothmann’ı çok çok sevmeme rağmen, Jacobsen’in kitabını okuduktan sonra Baharda Ölmek daha melodramatik kaldı, oysa Rothmann’ın kitabı kesinlikle daha iyi yazılmış kanımca. Atmosfer, karakterler, daha yoğundu. Orada kıyameti andıran savaş sekansları varken, Jacobsen’de savaş hep dışarıda kalıyor, bir uğultu, pencerelerin filan patlamasından başka şiddet yok neredeyse, Ölüler ölürken değil, sonrasında görülüyorlar, buz tutmuş, oraya buraya sıkışmış. Karakterler neredeyse karikatürize. Ama Timo anlatıyı iyi sürüklediğinden, göze batmıyorlar.

Jacobsen’in üçüncü okuduğum kitabından sonra diyebilirim ki, ne anlatırsa anlatsın hemen hemen aynı biçimde anlatıyor. Olabildiğince sade, arada sıklıkla hayata dair -hikayede okuyanı dışarı çıkaran- çıkarımlar yapan bir tarzı var. Bu kitapta da örneğin son bölümlerde aniden üçüncü tekil şahsa geçip nedenini çok yerinde biçimde aktarmasına rağmen yüksek ihtimal ünlü biri olmasa ortalama bir editör ne bu kardeşim burayı değiştir deyip reddederdi.

Timo’nun kitabın başında köyün delisi olduğunu öğrendikten sonra, aklı başında davranan (siper almaması hariç) tek karakter olmasını tuhaf bulmalıyız belki. Belki deliliği bildiğimiz anlamda bir kayıp ruhtan çok kafada bir şeylerin oturmamış kişiliğine konmuş yanlış tanıdır, ben buna yordum daha çok. Çünkü bu anlamaya çalışma hali kitabın asıl düğümü. Öte yandan, kitabın asıl adında belirtildiği gibi, o kasabada Kış Savaşı’nda bir mucize yaşandı, kitabın tüm gerçekçi anlatımına rağmen mucizede mantık aramamak gerekli.

Çünkü kitapta da dendiği gibi: "Hikayeyi beğenmediysen otur da kendin anlat, lanet herif!"

Çok akıcı, hikayesi özgün ve aslında çok temel bir soruya odaklanan bir kitap: "etrafımızda olup biten her şeye rağmen olduğumuz kişide ısrar edebilir miyiz". Yaşadığımız mekanla kurduğumuz bağın, terk etmeme isteğinin rasyonalitesi üzerine de düşündürüyor diğer yandan. Birkaç yerde de tatlıca vurgulandığı üzere "budalalık" seviyesinde bağ kurmak belki de bazıları(mız) için özden gelen bir ihtiyaç. Ben üç yıldız verdim, savaş sırası anlatıları beni biraz boğduğu için sanırım. Fazlaca, çok fazlaca ağaç kesilmesi de yer yer nefesimi tıkadı diyebilirim.
Edit: Başkahramanın (Timmo) savaş sonrası gazetelerde yazanları birleştirmeye çalışması anlatılırken geriye dönük hatırlanan cümle de kitabın kurgulanış şekliyle hoş biçimde örtüşüyor: "Hikayeyi beğenmediysen otur da kendin anlat, lanet herif!" (121)

Çok keyifli bir tren yolculuğunda başladığım kitabı ülkece içinde bulunduğumuz kabus günlerde bitirdim. Kendimi biraz olsun iyi hissedebilmek adına, zorlanarak da olsa okudum.

Kitabın soğuk ve savaş atmosferi, hayatta kalma mücadelesiyle dolu kısımları beni çok yordu ve tetikledi. Yine de sahip olunan ırkın önemsizliği, insan olmanın, yaşamı ve mücadeleyi birlikte paylaşmanın gücünden çok etkilendim. Keşke farklı bir zamanda okusaydım. O zaman çok daha fazla seveceğime eminim.

Mooi ingetogen verhaal over Timo die besluit in zijn dorp te blijven als iedereen vertrekt omdat de oorlog nadert. Als de chaos toeneemt blijft hij doen wat hij altijd heeft gedaan. Houthakken voor wie hout nodig heeft. Maar de wereld brandt, de ijzige kou kleurt tenen zwart en de overlevenden verzamelen zich rondom Timo, hij heeft hier in het dorp altijd in deze barre omstandigheden overleefd.

But when the war is over, Timo is finally driven from his home when neither he nor the returning villagers understand his actions during the war. Plagued for years by confusion and shame, Timo concludes, “everyone has the right to be a hero in his own life.” He decides to discover the truth about Finland’s Winter War and the fate of his Russian companions. Artfully translated from Norwegian, Jacobsen’s novel is an internal narrative of survival, friendship and loss with the war serving as little more than a backdrop. It is the kind of story that stays with the reader long after he has put it down, like a hauntingly beautiful melody that cannot be shaken.

This beautiful book tells the story of a simple wood cutter who refuses to leave his Finnish town when the Russian army is advancing. Nearly all of the houses and civic buildings are burnt down to stop the Russians using the resources and when they do arrive they don’t know what to make of the woodcutter - why did he stay? What does he want? Is he a spy? An collaborator?

The woodcutter becomes an unlikely hero. His strength derived from a desire to stay in his town and survive he manages to give hope to a group of conscripted Russians and helps them get through the worst times against all odds.

This book is translated from Norwegian and the writing is clear and evocative. This was an unexpected find for me on a charity bookshelf and well worth the 3 hours or so it took me to read.

If I tell you this story is about WW2 set in a bleak Finnish winter you will probably be surprised if I also tell you what a lovely story it is. Learned a lot about an aspect of the war that I knew nothing about.

Timo remains and plays up to his ‘fool’ reputation, secretly acting as caretaker to the village homes and saviour to an odd assortment of Russian men pressed into service by the Russian army.
This hugely impressive piece of writing, is not so much a novel about the Winter War, as about the lives of ordinary people dragged into war.
The village of Suomussalmi is known for its battle in 1939, when just 11,000 Finns decisively defeated an army of 50,000 Russians set on cutting Finland in half. The town’s residents burnt their homes before the Russians arrived, and disappeared into the surrounding forest fighting what effectively was a guerrilla war.
Many books are written about war, but more than most, this will long remain in my memory.
The real strength is in the survival and antics of the group of six misfits that Timo finds himself accidentally responsible for, amidst all the killing and the bitter winter around them. Jacobsen develops this hapless group into a community; two brothers from Ukraine, an elderly and short-sighted teacher, “a wretch called Rodion” (who is obsessively guarding a pair of his wife’s red shoes that he was picking up when he was press-ganged), an enigmatic youth and, fortunately, Antonov, who speaks both languages and serves as a translator.
I am a big fan of Jacobsen’s work, but this stands out as his best novel.

‘I want to say thank you,’ he said with earnestness, after which he drew his right hand out of the bear-glove and held it out to me, and as we shook hands and looked at each other, I knew that from now on this man would be willing to die for me, as no one had ever been before, with the possible exception of my parents, but I could not remember any of that and oddly enough, this was such a huge change between us, it was almost impossible to bear, I could see into him, we were now one person, I didn’t even think of him as Russian and of myself as Finnish, or that this was not peace, but war, as I ought to have done.

that was all... very vague

i really liked the concept of being the only person left in a burnt-down town all by yourself, but he was only alone for a few days, I think. also they say the main character's name maybe twice at the start and then not at all for the most of the book and then a bunch of times at the end so you're wondering who Timo is but it's the main guy you've been reading about all along.

it was very very vague and kinda confusing but in a good way, and I don't think he slept much the whole time so maybe that was adding to the general atmosphere

"Válka bez ohně, je jako klobása bez hořčice." - Jacobsen na to jde i v Dřevařích pěkně z vostra.

Roku 1939 se ruská armáda vesrala do Finska, jelikož to finské armádě napověděly satelitní snímky, tak na to byla připravena a města postupně evakuovala a vypalovala. To aby si Rusové neměli kde odpočinout. 

Ve městě, které očekávaná útok Rusů, žije dřevorubec Timo, kterej pá, že nikam nepůjde a počká ve městě az skončí válka. Tak ho tam teda Finové nechaj.

Den na to přijde sovětská armáda a je jim samozřejmě divny, proč tam na ne čeká jeden nařvanej chlap se sekerou. Timovi se podaří je přesvědčit, že neni kukačka a že tam proste zůstal, protože to je jeho domov. Vhod mu přijde i to, že finská armáda mezitím odrizne Rusy od dodávky zásob a posil a Rusové tak čumí jak Němci ve Stalingradu.

Koukal jsem na předpověď počasí a ve Finsku je zima jak v Rusku, tzn. V zimě i minus čtyřicet. A tak se musi topit a na to sou potřeba dřevaři. Timo dostane k ruce par neschopných Rusů, kteří už se nehodí na vojáky a je každej de posílán na dříví.

Připadalo mi, jako by to byl příběh o mně a mém dětství, protože mě babka často posílala na kopřivy a to i když trochu pršelo.

Timo se s nima skamarádí a přečká válku ve zdravi. Když přijdou Finové zpět domu, tak si mysli, že je kolaborant a Timo zase nema klid. Dál chodí s klukama na dřevo a snaží se vymyslet, jak je dostat přes hranici domu, protože chtej za rodinama. Akorát maj tu smůlu, že když je někdo chytne, tak je zastřelí - jak Fin, tak Rus. Fin protože jsou Rusové a Rus protože sou dezertéři.

I tak se rozhodnou jít a Timo zůstavá sám a žije na svém statku a dělá dřevo. Desetiletí po válce, zjišťuje, že zapomíná co se přesně za valky dělo a snaží se dohledat svědky, které mu jeho příběh dosvědčí.

Tak jako Ostrov, i Dřevaři jsou příběhem bez zásadních zvratů a velkolepých hrdinských činů. Život prostě plyne a bez jakéhokoli náznaku napětí popisuje Jacobson postup války a jeji dopad na život Dřevaře. Kniha je o tom, že přátelství je nezávislé na rase, národnosti nebo náboženství člověka. Což víme, že neni tak úplně pravda, protože to říkal Tomio.

I think I wanted to like The Burnt-out Town of Miracles, and although I sort of did, I couldn't find a great deal to latch onto. It's a book that can both be quite beautiful in it's simplicity and pass you by with its understatedness.

Timo, who narrates the majority of the book, is a great character, a man whose view on life may be simple but whose compulsions are unpredictable and totally human. We can't help but root for Timo and the fragile souls he meets in the course of the story. His approach to making sense of things is ultimately very touching.

The roles of some of the other characters seem to be incompletely filled. Towards the end of the book one very much feels that Jacobsen wants you to complete the emotional side of the tale for yourself. The language, similarly, tends to leave you to plenty of space to make the story your own.

Jacobsen's a good storyteller - the story is well paced and the emphasis is placed firmly on characters, who do develop over the course of the story. Maybe for this reason I expected a more concrete ending. Maybe this is just hindsight, but I could have guessed - the whole tale has a wistful and vague feel to it that fits with the way it eventually tails off.

The book failed to rough me up or stun me, I just felt vaguely happy to have read a nice book. Maybe a few of the images I encountered along the way will return. But I can't help but feel there could have been more there.

Roy Jacobsen'den nefes kesici, buz gibi ve çarpıcı bir roman.

İkinci Dünya Savaşı başlarında Rus-Fin savaşı ortasında kalmış bir Fin kasabasında oduncu Timmo'nun yaşadıkları anlatılıyor. Köyünü bırakmayan Timmo, hem Fin ordusuyla hem de Rus ordusuyla münasebete giriyor. Kitabın eleştirilebilecek tek konusuysa bu durumun bir tekrara dönüşmesi. Bir Fin askerleri, bir Rus askerleri, sonra tekrar Fin askerleri falan, bir acayip.

Büyük güçlerin çarpıştığı acımasız kışın ortasında güzel bir insan manzarası Timmo. Okunmalı.

Я люблю книги, где нет правых и виноватых, где на ситуацию можно равноценно посмотреть как глазами одной стороны, так и другой. У каждого ведь своя правда, никто не владеет ей единолично. Роман "Ангел зимней войны" дает возможность посмотреть на советско-финскую войну под другим углом. Как говорил Аттикус из "Убить пересмешника": "Нельзя по-настоящему понять человека, пока не станешь на его точку зрения... Надо влезть в его шкуру и походить в ней."

Для меня, честно говоря, советско-финская война - это темный лес. То ли я ушами все прохлопала в школе, то ли нам об этом почти и не рассказывали. А после школы наши дороги с историей Второй мировой и вообще разошлись. Название городка, где разворачивается большая часть событий романа, мне ровным счетом ничего не говорит. Так что пришлось добывать дополнительную информацию в Википедии:

Боевые действия между советскими и финскими войсками около посёлка Суомуссалми в ходе Советско-финской войны 1939—1940 годов, длившиеся с 7 декабря 1939 года по 8 января 1940 года получили наименование Битва при Суомуссалми. Результатом сражения стало крупное поражение Красной Армии, мало повлиявшее на исход войны, но значительно укрепившее боевой дух оборонявшихся финнов. С декабря по февраль советские войска в составе 15 стрелковых дивизий предпринимают множество попыток прорвать «линию Маннергейма», обороняемую 15 пехотными дивизиями финнов, однако больших успехов в этом не достигают.

Главный герой романа - местный "дурачок", лесоруб Тиммо, который отказывается покинуть поселок после того, как финны решают отступить и сжечь все поселения, которые находятся на пути советских войск. Тиммо не хочет расставаться со своим домом, он не мыслит своего существования вне этого городка. Начало романа очень сильное, картина, нарисованная Якобсеном, мощно бьет по болевым точкам читателя. Вот, например, после пожара Тиммо обходит дома и заходит в несколько, чудом уцелевших:

Она тоже оставила дом прибранным и вымытым..., я почуял в этом тайну и вскрыл письмо. ...написала карандашом дрожащей рукой, чтобы солдаты жгли и не стыдились, она все вымыла и вычистила только для того, чтобы подарок, который она делает Финляндии, был действительно хороший.


Маленький такой подвиг старушки-финки, подарок своей родине... Героизм и отвага, которые бывают и по ту сторону фронта...

Но большая часть романа посвящена взаимоотношениям Тиммо и русских, как офицеров, так и простых лесорубов, вместе с которыми, плечо к плечу, Тиммо и проходит весь этот кошмар. И здесь вы думаете будет брызгать через край ненависть? Будет клокотать в горле презрение? Нет, это не книга о войне на войне, это книга о мире во время войны, о том мире, который изо всех сил пытается вылепить себе горстка русских, которых оторвали от семей и бросили в гущу перестрелок и бомбежек, да сельский идиот, к которому никогда всерьез и не относился. Сотворить хоть минуту мира в такие времена - это нелегкая миссия. И она сближает.

...мы словно стали единым целым, и мне было плевать, что я финн, а он русский, и что сейчас не мирное время, и что на войне так думать не полагается.


Кстати, об умственной отсталости героя. Из-за нее я и снизила оценку книге. Это, по мнению автора, сельский дурачок? С таким образом мысли? С такой речью и такой логикой? Якобсен назначил Тиммо на эту должность только для того, чтобы обосновать тот факт, что он вопреки всему остался в Суомуссалми, а потом напрочь забыл об этом? Нехорошо.

Но все же, как мне кажется, это единственный просчет автора. Он сумел создать роман о важных вещах, но без излишнего патриотизма или морализаторства. Эта книга заставляет задуматься, поставить себя и на место финнов, и на место русских. Замечательно сказано в эпиграфе к книге:

Если перед тобой Сократ и Карл ХІІ и первый говорит: "Иди со мной, я преподам тебе урок философии", а второй зовет: "Нет, вперед со мной - разобьем наголову русского царя!", то всякий последует за Карлом, потому что это требует мужества, а философия не требует ничего. (Сэмюэль Джексон)

Eine atmosphärische Geschichte mit einem sehr sympathischen Ich-Erzähler.
Die Schrecken des Krieges werden zwar nicht herunter gespielt aber dennoch so geschildert, dass es als Leser / Leserin nicht allzu belastend empfunden werden muss. Das hat der Autor meiner Meinung nach sehr gut gelöst. Überhaupt auch mal interessant, den Krieg aus finnischer Perspektive zu lesen.
Gibt es aktuell übrigens bei Kindle unlimited und von mir eine Empfehlung dazu.

The novels opening, with the burning of a small Finnish village introduces us to Timo. The village is being burned by the Finnish army to keep the Russians from using it as shelter in the bitter winter. Timo refuses to leave and is there when the Russians arrive, and they put him to work at his old job, cutting wood.
Although he was considered the 'idiot' by other villagers, he becomes a leader to the small group of Russian prisoners assigned to the wood cutting detail.
When the village is recaptured by the Finns, he helps the Russian woodcutters escape, never knowing until years later if any of them succeeded.

This novel is about the casual brutalities of war where survival in the cold is as precarious as battle.

I love everything by him and this was no exception. I’m ready to read it again and notice all the small details that contribute to the themes you walk away feeling, but maybe not knowing.

Rather an odd book I thought. The town is burned down by it's residents prior to them fleeing in 1939 before the Russians arrive. One resident stays. He's determined to stay, because this is his home, and he can't imagine living anywhere else. The book is not about war, but instead, ordinary people, and their response to war. Sometimes I lose things in translation. Perhaps this was one of them. It's a highly rated book. The landscape description is excellent. I was lost in the cold climate!

Knappe drei Sterne. Weil es im finnischen Winterkrieg spielt, stand es lange in meinem Regal und doch stand es da eben nur. Als ich es aussortieren wollte, bin ich auf der ersten Seite hängen geblieben und habe erst bei S. 43 wieder aufgeschaut. Was genau hat mich gepackt? Vielleicht war es vor allem der kalte Winter, der beschrieben war, während es draußen seit Tagen über 30 Grad warm ist. Ich las weiter, was der Protagonist Timo über seine Erlebnisse im Winter 1939 aus der Ich-Perspektive schildert, wie er sich der Evakuation verweigert hat und schließlich mit einer Handvoll Russen als Holzfäller mitten im Krieg arbeitete und mit ihnen überlebte. Zum Ende des Romans, Jahre nach Kriegsende, wechselt die Erzählperspektive und schafft damit zusätzliche Distanz zu den Ereignissen, die Timo noch lange mit sich herumträgt. - Dass ich weiterlas, spricht für das Buch, doch etwas Wesentliches fehlt mir, um gute drei Sterne zu vergeben.
