this book made me realize how many beautiful books we miss out on without translations. hands down, this was one of the most beautiful things i’ve ever read.

(1,700 intimacies) is a melancholic book that details grapples with the various forms of love we encounter in our lives, and the struggles that accompany them. it’s formatted in a request and response format, where the author — hsiao yi-wei — helps craft texts to convey delicate emotions.

the responses are elegant and beautiful, frequently metaphorical, yet at the same time written in rather layman terms, lending an air of relatability. hsiao is a master at capturing and conveying feelings; the tenderness of each piece is palpable.

deeply introspective and contemplative, this is a collection that is best savored bit by bit. it is realistically depressing, yet manages to also be uplifting at the same time, reminding us that we are not alone in feeling whatever way that we do. it teaches us to look for glimmers of hope in the darkness, and to move forward because sometimes that’s all that we can do.

reading this, i was reminded of the elegance of the chinese language. i am glad that my chinese proficiency (and a great deal of google lens scanning) was sufficient to get me through most of the book, and am forever grateful to my friend wanxin for introducing it to me. it’s definitely one that will stay with me for a long time.
