Sexy P.I. David Anderson takes one look at Jacey Wilder and knows she's no femme fatale. The red-headed smart-aleck in his office couldn't be more different from the tight-skirted dames he creates in pulp fiction novels. But Jacey is a paying customer and he's encountered precious few of those lately. All he has to do is track down her old boyfriend. How hard could it be?
With her thirtieth birthday fast approaching, Jacey is determined to get her life on track. Locating Albert- a suave, normal guy who romanced her one weekend-seems like the logical first step. But when she enlists the services of P.I. Anderson, logic is suddenly in short supply: Albert's not as normal as he seemed, and Jacey's starting to wonder if the man she's really searching for isn't right under her nose...

2.5 stars Look at that cover. Obnoxious, right? But also sort of curious. For years I saw it at the library and the bright colors would draw me in...then common sense would kick in and I'd recognize nothing good comes from lousy romance novels masquerading as mysteries. In fact, if you want to find an obnoxious duo, just mix hard boiled detective fiction (where the women are all wish fulfillment dames and dolls) with romance (where men always become exactly what the women want.) Obnoxious. Just like the cover. But undeniably addicting. I have struggled to get into any book over the last few weeks and I devoured this almost 400 page story in under a day. The mystery plays out fairly predictably (well, the villain has a POV so the author isn't hiding anything) and the character-development and their cliche hangups (she wants stability; he wants freedom and the open road) so heavy-headed it might give you a headache. But it works. Some fun side-characters really push the story along and the main character's genuine attraction makes the cliches...swallowable. If still headache inducing. Heck, I'm looking for the companion book/sequel so I guess that means it made me a convert.
A very good romance with elements of mystery thrown in, this book is a fun read. David is pursuing his passion of writing the best ever detective novel when Jacey enters his part-time private eye office and asks for his help in finding a boyfriend whom she had dumped several months before. She thinks that man is her chance for 'happily ever after' but what she doesn't know is that he was a diamond thief who was using her. When David discovers he is dead, she thinks it that plan is over and she doesn't need any more private investigation help, except for her undeniable attraction to David, and the fact that some very nasty guys are after her because they believe she has the diamonds. David, his eccentric but lovable Aunt Millie, and his friend Finn all pitch in to help solve Jacey's problem, and along the way, to nudge Jacey and David to take a good look at each other. This is a fast, fun read.
I'm going through my been-read stacks, trying to figure out which books I want to keep and which I want to get rid of. I hit Julie Kenner.
I didn't remember this book at all. I must have gotten it when it was first published. It was cute. It was light. It was fluffy. The characters aren't perfect but everyone gets what is deserved.
I won't be keeping this one but I remember now why I enjoy the author.
