A new life...an old love Can she risk loving him again in Shepherd’s Crossing ?
With her family in disgrace, Lizzie Fitzgerald never imagined she’d end up at an Idaho ranch. Fortunately, she’s working with horses she loves—even if it means dealing with her old sweetheart Heath Caufield. The widowed father of an adorable boy, Heath hasn’t forgiven Lizzie for their past. But even a stubborn cowboy can’t stop the heart’s ability to forgive...or love again.
Multi-published, award-winning, bestselling author Ruth Logan Herne is living her dream of being a published author and having the time of her life doing it. Born to a poor family in Rochester, NY, Ruthy draws on her early years and her many years of dealing with today's young families and businesses to create beautiful, heartfelt small-town stories of faith, hope and love... while adopting her favorite non-Scripture quotes "Plenty of time for rest in the grave" (Ben Franklin) and "No one can make you feel inferior without your permission." (Eleanor Roosevelt) and one can always depend on Yoda "There is no try. There is do or do not." “What we’ve got in mind and what the good Lord’s got planned don’t always agree, but that’s what makes life interesting. Sometimes it’s a collision course. Other times it’s a wide, beautiful curve.“
Ruth Logan Herne always delivers a warm story with a solid message and diverse characters. Her new release, Her Cowboy Reunion, is no exception. I was immersed into the story from the very first page and still didn’t want to put it down even when I reached the end.
The diverse cast of characters gives the story its heart and soul, but adorable Zeke steals the show in the most endearing ways possible! His instant love for “my Lizzie” (oh, my heart!), his enthusiasm for life, his adoration of his dad Heath, and his tender sweet heart made me want to reach inside the pages and HUG that precious boy! The fact that he is bi-racial is just as much a part of his story as all these other things I’ve mentioned, and I love that Herne just lets him be Zeke, in all his endearing adorableness.
Lizzie and Heath are old flames, whose history is bumpy to say the least. Both have skewed perspectives of a very significant event in their past, and both are still nursing their wounds all these years later. And with good reason, when you consider the erroneous view of the truth from which they’re each approaching the situation. Yet, Herne takes their story – all its tangled emotional mess – and gently allows God to restore and heal their hearts and their relationship. With some soul-deep wisdom via the character of Corrie, an almost-mama to Lizzie and her sisters.
“Sometimes we spin in circles because we’ve misplaced our direction. When we can’t see our way forward we tend to run in place.”
Bottom Line: Lizzie’s resilience (I love the strong women in Herne’s stories!) and Heath’s steadiness (for the most part lol) set the tone for this delightful story filled with horses and sheep and a precocious little boy. The glimpses into life on a horse farm/sheep ranch are unique and intriguing (a mare app…. who knew?!?), and Lizzie and Heath’s shared history is just as much so. The added subplot of the dying small town also captured my attention, and I look forward to where she takes this in future books in the series. Herne takes this story and these characters and wraps them in grace, strength, courage and wit – and love, lots of love. A must-read for all!
(I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I purchased for my own collection.)
Wow was that cheesy. Faintly cute at times but mainly just overarchingly cheesy.
This book is nothing like what I usually like to read, because it's a romance (which I like as a subplot but not so much as the main plot line) and contemporary (which I'm just not super into). But my grandma lent me 4 romance books that she read and liked, so I wanted to be able to tell her I read at least some of them when I give them back. I was trying to choose the least painful ones to read, but this one was painful because of how cheesy it was.
It reminded me so much of a Hallmark movie, and it felt like one of them was playing out as I read. There were all the classic problems, and it was all super predictable. In fact, at one point I said to myself that there was going to have to be some sort of injury soon that'll shock them into realizing what they want and what they almost missed out on. It happens every time, without fail (yes, I'm looking at you Heartland). In fact, this entire book reminded me so much of this comedy video that I just watched like yesterday by this super funny comedian I follow on YouTube. He made a video making fun of the Hallmark Christmas movies, and basically the video's a trailer for them all. It's hilarious and I recommend you watch it if you want to laugh. But anyways, even though this book wasn't Christmas-themed, it reminded me a lot of this video.
Also, the major conflict in the whole book was caused by a misunderstanding that had gotten dragged out for years but that could easily have been resolved by a little conversation. Honestly, this book could have been only 50 pages long, so I have no idea how it was able to get stretched out to almost 300. Actually, scratch that, I do know how, it's because of the misunderstanding. Which was a bit painful there at the end.
The one part I did wholy like and enjoy was the epilogue, although that literally lasted only 2 and a half pages sooo... But it was a sweet ending.
There wasn't anything necessarily bad about this book, but it was so cheesy that it was almost painful to read, and I'm just glad I was able to finish it up and get it over with in one sitting. Now onto the next romance book, and let's hope it's as quick a read as this one.
Woohoo! A new Ruthy series! I'm already in love with Shepherds Crossing -- a struggling town that needs an infusion of community spirit to pull it through some trying times. And yes, I consider this town an important character in the book. Wish we could get 'her' perspective now and again -- oh the stories 'she' could tell! Starting with all the shenanigans going on at Sean Fiztgerald's old ranch.
Lizzie didn't know the uncle who left her part owner of his Idaho ranch but she has every intention of honoring his dreams for the place -- even if it comes with the man she's spent a decade trying to forget. Oh la la -- that emotionally charged first scene! There's tension galore that carries forward into an awkward partnership that morphs into wary friendship that transforms into...well...let's just say we get to the happily ever after long way round 'cause Lizzie and Heath are stubborn! And they remember things differently which means they are both carrying grudges based on half truths and...oy. There's lots to sort out.
Luckily they have a great cast of secondary characters to help them including an adorably precocious five-year-old named Zeke and Lizzie's almost-like-a-mama friend (and so much more), Corrie, whose wisdom is worth taking to heart.
"Sometimes we spin in circles because we've misplaced our direction. When we can't see our way forward we tend to run in place." (p 73)
See what I mean? And there's a lot of running in place and spinning circles when it comes to this hero and heroine. Heath has a son to consider and the memory of a wife to honour and Lizzie just wants to distance herself from the debacle that is her family (well, aside from her sisters) and neither wants anything to do with the other. Really?!
And speaking of sisters -- they've yet to make an appearance but they are part of the inheritance too and future heroines in the series, I believe. But I also hope that a certain cowboy, namely Jace, might just find himself a hero of his own story too. I know, I'm a greedy reader who always wants more when it comes to Ruth Logan Herne's stories.
What we've got in mind and what the good Lord's got planned don't always agree, but that's what makes life interesting. Sometimes it's a collision course. Other times it's a wide, beautiful curve.
Thus begins the Shepherd's Crossing series by Ruth Logan Herne! Life certainly throws curves at Lizzie and she must learn to make the best of it. Even when facing Heath, her long ago sweetheart. Throw in a cute kid, a few horses, a wise life-long female mentor named Corrie, a chance to start over, and you have the classic Herne infused story to pull you in. What I love best are her strong characters, especially the women. When life starts down a different direction, they aren't afraid of rolling up their sleeves and making the best out of what's thrown at them. Lizzie is one such character; she faces the past with the man she scorned years ago. She does it with grace and her chin held high, and maybe a little bit of stubbornness! Heath's five-year-old son, Zeke, is an instant hit for me, as well as Lizzie. He brings his little boy charm and wonder of the world through his eyes; you can't help but fall in love with him. Watching things play out between Lizzie, Zeke and Heath is a whole lot of fun and how God orchestrates everything to bring about forgiveness & second chances. Family dynamics is a strong theme throughout; bonds that go beyond blood, those that are forged through love and a lifetime of lessons learned the hard way. Typical Herne fashion that I've come to expect and look for! Faith, forgiveness, learning to start over, ties that last, and of course, love are what you'll find in Her Cowboy Reunion. I can't wait for Lizzie's sisters stories, Charlotte & Melonie!
* I received a complimentary copy from the author and was under no obligation to leave a favorable review. *
'Lots of things in life aren't fair. We cling to our faith and hold tight to the reins.'
Ruth Logan Herne begins another series, Shepherd's Crossing, with this new book and it is truly so very good. Lizzie Fitzgerald has had a rough life when she inherits a quarter of a ranch from an uncle she's never seen. It means she'll get to work with the horses she loves, but when she arrives, she runs into an old sweetheart, Heath Caulfield. Things ended badly between them and now Heath is widowed with a 5 year old son, who Lizzie quickly comes to care for very much.
Lizzie is determined never to be hurt again and Heath can't bear to be unfaithful to his wife's memory, but God has a different plan for these two. Written in Herne's straight from the heart style, this one is sure to please her fans and others, too. I loved every minute and finished in one day.
*I received a preview copy of this book. The opinions stated here are entirely my own.
Ruth Logan Herne penned another charming whimsical story with her latest Love Inspired book, Her Cowboy Reunion. Lizzie Fitzgerald never imagined working at a ranch in Idaho after her father disgraced the family. Heath Caufield was shocked when she arrived at the ranch, where he had been working for her Uncle Sean for a number of years. Lizzie and Heath parted ways when family pressure was applied; however, the Fitzgeralds’ daughters caregiver Corrie, intervened for Heath by sending him to Idaho to work at Sean Fitzgerald’s ranch. There’s plenty of action on the ranch and all the working details with Lizzie love for horses being evident. Heath and Lizzie must come to an understanding with each other since Uncle Sean’s will was specific about the ranch. Zeke, Heath’s adorable son, won Lizzie’s heart with his eyes and manners, but will Heath and Lizzie be able to come to terms about the past? Will forgiveness be found?
I love how Ruth Logan Herne choose to write about the affects of forgiveness from both perspective—forgiving and clinging to faith in God or hanging on to it with anger. I look forward to the next book in Shepherd’s Crossing and the story of another Fitzgerald’s daughter overcoming or finding a new beginning.
Thank you to Ruth Logan Herne for a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review but have expressed my own thoughts.
A gripping romance.....hearts are challenged and life is experienced on a beautiful western ranch!
In her books, author Ruth Logan Herne tackles emotionally difficult subjects with compassion and grace, and this series debut, Her Cowboy Reunion, is just such a story. Lizzie Fitzgerald and Heath Caufield had a past relationship. It didn’t end well. When they find themselves working together on an isolated Idaho ranch near the downtrodden community of Shepherd’s Crossing, tensions flare and hearts are challenged.
My heart and emotions were held captive by the difficult situation the couple faced as they struggled with trust and their feelings for each other. Adding to the deepening of the story, I was fascinated with the depiction of ranch life on a large western spread and enchanted by the exuberant little boy, Zeke, and by the dear woman, Corrie. As the author does so well, this book has touching offerings of family wisdom along with gentle guidance for reviving community spirit. But best of all, I love a romance where love can conquer overwhelming difficulties...with faith as the guide toward forgiveness....and this story takes a heaping portion of forgiveness for past hurts and misunderstandings, but a beautiful conclusion awaits at the end.
Since I’ve lived in many small towns of the west, I was immediately invested in the concerns of Shepherd’s Crossing and look forward to seeing the community develop as the town faces the challenges ahead. I’m sure we’re in for more delights as the folks come together in hope, faith and love....with the greatest of these being love....in all its various expressions. A heartwarming book!
Favorite quotes: (Don’t you love these classic Ruth Logan Herne writing wisdom-isms?) ~~It wasn’t about the money or the power of heading up a high-priced property. It was about taking the right trail to get where you were going. ~~“What we’ve got in mind and what the good Lord’s got planned don’t always agree, but that’s what makes life interesting. *I was given a copy of this book with no requirement to write a review. I’m delighted to offer my honest opinions about this story.
Her Cowboy Reunion by Ruth Logan Herne (Shepherd’s Crossing) A new life...an old love Can she risk loving him again in Shepherd’s Crossing? With her family in disgrace, Lizzie Fitzgerald never imagined she’d end up at an Idaho ranch. Fortunately, she’s working with horses she loves—even if it means dealing with her old sweetheart Heath Caufield. The widowed father of an adorable boy, Heath hasn’t forgiven Lizzie for their past. But even a stubborn cowboy can’t stop the heart’s ability to forgive...or love again This is Lizzie Fitzgerald and Heath Caufield's story. This is the chance you’ve been waiting for. Hoping for. Praying for. Don’t blow it. Lizzie Fitzgerald climbed out of an SUV more suited to her rich past than her impoverished present. Her late uncle’s Western Idaho ranch splayed around her like an old-fashioned wagon wheel, spreading wide from the farmhouse hub. Straight south lay sheep barns forming a huge letter T. The sound of sheep and dogs rose up from beyond the barns where woolly creatures dotted rolling fields like white sprinkles on a kelly green cake. The cowboy drew closer. He raised his head and looked at her, as if throwing down a challenge. And she knew why. Heath Caufield. Her first love, with his coal-black hair and gray-blue eyes. Eyes that seemed to see right through her and found her wanting. Adrenaline buzzed through her. She stared at him, and he stared right back. Then he said two simple words. “You came.” “You’re here.” “I live here.” I highly recommend reading. Her Cowboy Reunion by Ruth Logan Herne is a wonderful well written 5 star book. 4.5 Stars: Lizzie didn't know the uncle who left her part owner of his Idaho ranch but she has every intention of honoring his dreams as well as having a new place to call home. What she doesn't expect is to come face to face with the man she's spent a decade trying to forget. Lizzie is trying to bounce back from being kicked out of the family business after her father embezzled millions and disappeared. When this opportunity arises to move to Idaho and run the horse side of the ranch, she quickly accepts and with Corrie, the woman who raised her after her mother's death, in tow, she arrives and decides that she has to make the best of what looks like a bad situation.
I loved this story. Lizzie and Heath are both stubborn and under the belief that the other one abandoned him/her. They are both loving, caring, strong characters whose faith has been tarnished. I love the quote, “What we’ve got in mind and what the good Lord’s got planned don’t always agree, but that’s what makes life interesting. Sometimes it’s a collision course. Other times it’s a wide, beautiful curve." from Corrie, as it says it all. Young Zeke is a treasure in this story. He not only steals Lizzie's heart, but he stole mine. This is a happily ever after that has some bumps and detours along the way. I love the way Ruth Logan Herne writes a Christian Romance. Everything is realistic and just part of life. I am looking forward to see what is next for Shepherd's Crossing.
My favorite romance stories are the ones where the couple knew each other long ago and finally find their way back to each other. One of my favorite love inspired authors is Ruth Logan Herne. Combine these two favorites, add in cowboys, horses and an adorable little boy named Zeke and you've got a winner in Her Cowboy Reunion. Lizzie and Heath have a lot of obstacles to overcome including misunderstandings, different backgrounds and a family patriarch intent on keeping them apart, but when thrown together unexpectedly, they can't help but rekindle the old feelings from the past still burning in their hearts. I especially enjoyed the sheep ranch aspect of this book. A nice change from the typical cattle ranch. Emotional. heart gripping, and just enough suspense to keep you eagerly turning the pages. Ruth Logan Herne has done it again! I am looking forward to more book in the Shepherd's Crossing series and hope Lizzie's sisters can find a romance as beautiful as the one Lizzie and Heath share in Her Cowboy Reunion..
I love a feel-good story, especially when small children and animals are involved. So it was very easy for me to fall in love with Ruth Logan Herne's newest Love Inspired novel, Her Cowboy Reunion. This is the first book in her "Shepherd's Crossing" series which just released this month.
It is obvious the author has been around children a lot as she writes their characters so well and their speech is all so real. I really love that about her work.
Her Cowboy Reunion is about reuniting with past loves, forgiveness of others, and forgiveness of oneself. It is also about getting past the anger of the past in order to make room for joy in the future. I loved how the author allowed us to be part of the process.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read feel-good stories. I guarantee you will fall in love with a little cowboy dude names Zeke.
On a 5-Star scale - 5 Stars!!!!!
I would like to thank the author Ruth Logan Herne for the complimentary copy. I received my copy for free with no expectation for a positive review.
Her Cowboy Reunion by Ruth Logan Herne a Shepherd's Crossing series. Lizzie Fitzgerald moved to her uncles ranch in Idaho. He had passed away and left the ranch to her and her two sisters and the ranch manager. When she got there she found out the ranch manager was Heath Caufield whom she was in love with 12 years ago. There is a history there of hurt and sadness. Heath has a four year old boy and his wife died in childbirth. Heath is in charge of the sheep and Lizzie the horses. They try to work out a relationship. People are leaving the small town because no work there. A good read.
I read a HQN online story and wants and wanted to read more. Cowboy's Christmas Surprise was a good read and wanted to start the series that it came from
Lizzie and her 'mother' Corrie have moved to Idaho to work the horse breeding program on her Uncle Sean's ranch, Pine Ridge. She and her two sisters, Melonie and Charlotte, have to live on the ranch for a year and then they will inherit it. The other two will be arriving later but Lizzie was the first to arrive and get things started. What she didn't know was that her ex-boyfriend was here and working the ranch on the lamb side of the ranch. Heath was working the ranch and has a 5 year old boy Zeke.
What a wonderful, inspiring story. Lizzie has moved on with her life and did so by having faith in God. She may not be able to forget what happened so long ago but she sees that Heath is harboring hurt and is very angry because his wife Anna had died shortly after giving birth to Zeke. Of course there are two sides to every story and both Heath and Lizzie got to hear what had happened all those years ago. Forgiveness.
I really loved this story especially the characters and the little boy. It’s amazing how much not understanding another person can change your life. We all have conflicts with our family and need to try to resolve them
What an intense beginning to a new Ruth Logan Herne series, Shepherd's Crossing. Loved these characters and am looking forward to seeing this community revitalize.
A fun 2nd chance romance with a handsome cowboy, horses and an adorable little boy. What’s not to love about a story that has all these? I always enjoy Ruth’s stories and this was a good one!
I always enjoy Ruth Logan Herne’s books and this one did not disappoint. Lizzie and Heath have a past that riddle with misunderstanding and hurt and they each have to work their way toward forgiveness. Love can take route again.
