I have problems rating this... It was good and inetersting read but there're some inconsistency in the last part of the story...
The hero, Sebastian, was a true hero of that time: strong, honorable, compassionate and deeply in love with the heroine Alfreya since the first time he saw (and saved) her.
I had more problems with Alfreya. I understand that she hated Normans (and Sebastian is Norman) because they killed her father and usurped her lands, but I just couldn't understand how she could love an insensitive, war-loving, drunken father who spent all their fortune in drink and gave it away to his friend who just spurred his hatered of Normans in order to spill him money?!
She condemned Sebastian before even knowing him...
Still I appreciated that she was able to recognize and appreciate him later on.

The story started out slow but soon picked up. The h was a decent, good guy. The hr reconciled her hate for Sebastian quickly, which I liked. I hate reading book where the couple hate each other for the entire book. Frey was mature.
I liked the mystery of the killings. I never guessed who the killer was. The story kept me guessing till the end.
Very good read. I highly recommend it!

Very impressed…
Warrior’s Surrender is one of the best historical romances I have read in a long time. The hero of the story is Sebastian de la Croix (what a sexy name), baron of Tyrswick. A battle hardened knight who came to the notice of his king for his bravery and cunning military strategy. The heroine, Lady Alfreya, daughter of the previous earl of Tyrswick, is a strong woman who has learnt to protect herself because the men in her life have either been killed or abandoned her in her time of need. Frey and Sebastian come together when she needs him to help protect her brother.
I loved the feelings I got from this story. I grew up reading stories similar to this one by authors such as Julie Garwood and Jude Deveraux. There is nothing better, in my opinion, than reading a story where the hero is loyal, brave and honourable, while also having vulnerability in his love for his heroine. Our heroine is just as loyal, brave and honourable to her loved ones. Frey struggled to give her love, but once it is given, it is strong.
The villain in this story made my skin crawl, he uses his beauty to hide the ugliness of his character and manipulates people into trusting him. I started to question the loyalty of supposed friends because they did not trust easily and only showed loyalty once it had been earned.
There is a slight supernatural twist, but it was not a major part to the storyline, so didn’t distract or takeaway the believability and accuracy of the authors words.
Overall, I loved the feeling this story gave me. The characters were strong, the settings vivid and the descriptions were interesting without being too much. Sebastian and Frey have a great connection in and out of the bedroom and do not hesitate to communicate their feelings and thought processes. This was refreshing, so many stories these days are dragged out because of a lack of talking between the main characters.
I did take away one star because I thought that it was a touch too long.
I was lucky enough to be given a copy of Warrior’s Surrender by Ms Carter to read and review. It was an absolute pleasure to read her work and I will definitely be reading more in the future.

Set during the years following the Norman Conquest, Warrior’s Surrender isn’t my usual reading fare but I thoroughly enjoyed this masterful blend of action, romance and intrigue.
I like how the events of the Prologue are to have far-reaching consequences later in the story.
While Sebastian is everything I would expect of a conquering Norman lord…powerful, proud, strong and courageous, he is also just and compassionate. These qualities have earned him not only the loyalty of his own men but also the respect of the people of Tyrswick.
Bold, strong-willed and passionate, Frey is the perfect heroine for Sebastian. She commands her men with the temperament and strength of a warrior but I also saw a softer side in her obvious love for her young brother Brice and her concern for her men’s safety.
I enjoyed watching the romance developing between Sebastian and Frey. The initial mistrust and antagonism seem realistic given the circumstances but there is a real sense of the attraction simmering between them. I like how Ms Carter allows us to see Sebastian’s compassion and tenderness and I especially love the scene where he gives Frey’s brother a kitten. It was easy to understand why Frey falls in love with him. It was refreshing to see them openly admit their love for each other…a love that remains strong.
There is plenty of action and even a touch of the supernatural which adds an interesting layer to the story. Ms Carter gathers together an interesting cast of secondary characters but the one who really stands out is the villainous, cunning and truly diabolical Drefan …a formidable enemy indeed.
Ms Carter’s extensive historical research is evident in the details that are subtly interwoven throughout the story. They brought this turbulent period vividly to life for me.
My Verdict: A compelling tale of honour, passion, love and betrayal. Definitely recommended.

This was one of the best medieval romances I've read, taking place around William the Conqueror's time. I think I discovered this book from looking up medieval romance recommendations.
The story started out a little slow, and I was like but the ratings are so high, and I paid for this 😭 but it might be a 3-star read. The hero was your typical handsome, you could even say dreamy hero. The heroine had a strong personality. Freya was strong, brave, and fierce; she struck me as a leader. She didn't seem to be a virgin though, but I was confused if she had lost her virginity to Drefan or not.
What made this book so great was the plot that didn't let up, especially toward the end. The conflict was a lot better than the romance. There was even a touch of the supernatural thrown in, which was interesting.
I was afraid the book was going to end the same way the movie The Northman did, with The book's end and shift to the epilogue were slightly too abrupt for me. Sometimes, I think as a way to leave you hanging on the edge of your seat, the book would shift perspectives from what intense thing was going on with Freya to what was going on with Sebastian. That was also unnecessary and abrupt, in my opinion.
I could tell the author did her research for this book, and I'd be happy to check out her other books. I even learned what defenestration means (throwing someone out of the window).

I must confess, I underestimated Sebastian de la Croix. His stamina, his charisma, the sheer power of the man...I thought I'd be done with him in a day, but he held me captivated for three. And it was masterfully done, too.
Equal parts romance and action, this is a book you won't want to put down.
I've been anticipating this book for months - every time Ms Carter released a tantalising snippet from the book, or revealed a little more of her extensive research behind the story. This is a historical romance, but it's also a devastatingly detailed slice of life at the time. The clothing, the food, the customs...Ms Carter has a reputation for historical accuracy, but she's woven it so skilfully into a gripping story that I can only applaud. And want to read it all over again...
A passionate story of honour, chivalry and love, set in the tumultuous times of post-Conquest Britain.
There's Frey, a complex character who guides you into the life of a Saxon lady who has lost her lands in the Conquest, but is determined to save her family and build a life for herself. She's passionate and proud, trained in combat but without the heart for killing, though she does when needs must. She's no fainting maiden, but a woman forged in the heart of conflict.
And then there's Sebastian de la Croix, a just and merciful man who nevertheless holds plenty of power. A natural leader, he holds the loyalty of his own men and the people he inherited through conquest - no mean feat, with the threat of rebellion and invasion from Scotland always hanging over his head.
Put the two together and the combination is explosive and enchanting, even without the addition of a definite villain in the person of Drefan, a well-connected, well-funded rebel with few scruples and a frightening knowledge of human nature that he uses to bewitch and achieve his own, ambitious ends.
Needless to say, I loved this book. But don't underestimate the stamina and charm of Sebastian...for he will conquer you, too.

Wowie! What a wonderful Adventure Romance! The author has done her historical research and the events in the book seem so real, and some of them are!
I was easily transported into the world of Nobles, knights, sword fighting🔪, Ladies💃, peasants, castles🏰 and villages, intrigue, and murder. The book flows fast and I found no dead spots that made me want to skip through pages.
This is a great read from cover to cover! Mesmerizing story!

OMG! To say this was a great read is quite the understatement. It was an awesome read. It’s been
awhile since I have read a well written medieval historical romance. Warrior’s Surrender is a story of honour and love that was set during the time that the Normans had conquered Saxon. What I liked about this book was that although it was set in a time when the English language was not as evolved as it now, the author used language that modern day readers could relate to.
The characters were complex, strong and well developed. They had the ability to hold the reader’s interest, leaving them wanting more. I found it easy to relate to them on every level. I found myself rooting for Sebastian and Alfreya as I wanted the best for them. I was totally invested in their outcome. They complimented each other very well. The chemistry between them was sizzling and off the charts. This was good as without chemistry the romance would not have been believable.
Alfreya was the type of woman who was willing to fight for what she believed. She stood by her people through thick and thin. She wanted what was best for them as such when she realized that surrendering to her enemy would be in their interest she decided to secure a deal with Baron Sebastian de la Croix. Sebastian was a merciful, yet powerful leader. He commanded the allegiance of his knights and the masses whom he had acquired through the subjection. However, there were a few who questioned his decision to secure a truce with Alfreya and her people.
The villain of the story was evil beyond the words. He was cunning and not above using the innocent to achieve his evil plans. His biggest motivations were greed and power.
The story pulled me in from the first page. The prologue sets the pace of the story. As one gets into the story the events that took place at the introduction becomes quite clear. The story was well paced and it had the right balance of romance and adventure. There were also some supernatural elements. All the events taking place blended well with the main story making for an intriguing read. The only issue I had with this story was the way which the villain was dealt with. I do believe he got off too lightly. I say this because he was not made to take responsibility for his actions. I do not want to go into too much detail as it may lead to spoilers. It was this reason I gave the story a four star.
This was my first time reading this author’s work and I am looking forward to read more. If you are a fan of romance, adventure and epic battles in medieval times, then this story is for you.

Alright, so before I start anything, let me say I got this book in exchange for an honest review. I can say that I enjoyed this book. I have not read a historical romance in a while, and I can say this was a great journey back into that genre of books.
The characters are very strong and well developed. They keep you engaged and in some ways you are always cheering for them when something happens. They do keep you reading on, engaging you with each action they take. I loved how the male and female leads in this book played well off each other. It is always good when your love interests have real chemistry. You can't have a good romance novel without chemistry.
The story itself was great. I loved how you read the prologue and when you get into the book, the actions there come back into play. It is always nice when you get a good back story that you can follow. I can say it was a bit predictable, but that is not always a bad thing.I could see it coming. I am trying to not give anything away because even from the get go you have things that factor into the rest of the story.
The side stories in this book don't take away from the main story and really they help move the main story along. Sometimes in books you get the main story and the back stories have nothing to do with it and pull away from it, not in this book. This book flows well and moves from one part to another with no huge issues. As with all books, some parts are a little rushed, but over all it moved well.
Pros: Well thought out story, strong characters, great themes
Cons: Some places rushed, some conflicts didn't feel fully resolved

Extensive research skilfully woven through this historical romance creates a fabulously detailed tapestry of life at the time. The clothing, the food, the customs are set against the backdrop of post-Conquest Britain and the Harrying of the North.
Frey is determined to save her family and build a life for herself. Passionate and proud, Lady Alfreya is a skilful archer and a true Lady. Keep an eye out for the challenges she faces along the way!
And then there's Sebastian de la Croix, a natural leader who holds the loyalty of his own men and the people he inherited through conquest - an honourable and just man who must strike a balance between conqueror and conquered while the threat of rebellion and invasion from Scotland hangs over his head.
Drefan is a chilling arch villain with a frightening understanding of human nature and a lack of compassion or humanity to soften the darkness within. He is the real beast of the North.

Lengthy like her first book so make sure you like a big read like I do. Very detailed but doesn't lack pace and draws you right in. Didn't think I'd like it as much as her first novel which was a regency, I'm not really into medieval but really glad I gave it the chance, I think its as good, maybe even better than the first one. You get a feel for the time and the characters seem as real as people now. Baron Sebastian and Frey are more complex than the couple in Moonstone Obsession, they should hate each other because they're on opposite sides and do to start with but she learns he's not the enemy she thought. The villain is a total, complete blackhearted scheming bastard. There's a neat CSI type sub plot and a slight hint of paranormal thrown in that reminded me a little of the way Stephen King sometimes just hints at stuff. Carter sure likes to mix it up and it comes out good. When I read the last page and closed the book, I realized the cover is a neat bit of mis-direction. Looking forward to reading her new one.

Wow! This is a really great read! First of all, I am always looking for a well written Medieval period novel, but, these days with the over abundance of Regency novels out there, it’s like finding a needle in a haystack.
So, I was happy to find this one, but I was not expecting to be blown away like this! The author has obviously researched the time period, made the characters, language, dress, and laws authentic, yet the modern reader can easily relate.
Alfreya, is a strong female character, a warrior in her own right, with the ability to lead men, if need be. But, when her brother, Brice, falls ill with an infection, it’s time for Freya to work out a deal with the Baron Sebastian de la Croix. When it becomes clear that her dear friend was murdered and there are other similar deaths, the pair form an uneasy truce, that eventually develops into a fragile alliance, which blossoms into a full fledged passionate love story. But, there are those in their midst that pose a grave danger to their partnership and new marriage. Double crosses and back stabbings, intrigue, blackmail, and danger erupt keeping me on the edge of my seat!
Freya and Sebastian are perfect for each other- both are haunted by a death, both are fiercely loyal, both are passionate and honest. Sebastian is the stuff dreams are made of. He has an alpha temperament, but mostly in a leadership way, because with Freya, he is gentle, patient, and full of love, and is not bad to look at either.
Freya is the type of female character I like to see in a historical novel because she is a strong independent woman, who holds her own in a man’s world. Freya certainly experiences the wrath of men who do not like taking orders from a woman or having to answer to one, but she walks to the beat of her own drum, making her husband very proud.
So, if you are looking for an outstanding historical romance without Dukes, Earls, ball gowns and rules of polite society, if you want some action and adventure, epic battles, a sweeping love story, with just a hint of the paranormal, and a perfect Happy Ever After. Look no further. This one is about as perfect as it gets.

This was a great romance with just the right amount of suspense. I loved this story and recommend it to everyone.

4.5 Cocktails
This is a wonderful historical romance. One of the things that I absolutely loved about this novel is that the main characters were married halfway through the book. The author does an exceptional job of showing the reader how their marriage relationship evolves.
Sebastian de la Croix was a fierce warrior and loyal to King William. He was also compassionate, understanding, passionate, honorable, and patient. He displayed the best attributes of a warrior and husband. I loved that he allowed Lady Alfreya of Tyrswick to be herself. He wasn’t afraid to prove himself and give her time to know him and love him.
Lady Alfreya of Tyrswick was also a fierce warrior and skilled in archery. She had been betrayed and didn’t trust easily…until she met Sebastian de la Croix. Despite her misgivings she fell in love with him.
The storyline had excitement, adventure, romance, and a supernatural twist. I liked the element of suspense that had me guessing until the very end. I was literally sitting up late because I wanted to make sure that both of them were going to be okay.
This is definitely a must read.

Warrior's Surrender is a Medieval romance set in England shortly after the Norman conquest. Saxon Lady Alfreya of Tyswick and Norman Baron Sebastian de la Croix start as enemies, a situation made worse when Alfreya's family's lands are given to Sebastian by the King as a reward for good service. However, in an effort to unite warring factions, King William sanctions a marriage between them. As they get to know each other, respect, friendships and love grow.
However, both Freya and Sebastian hide dangerous secrets and there is a killer on the loose who seems to determined to destroy them both.
Elizabeth Ellen Carter writes beautiful prose. Her descriptions of the countryside, customs and people transported me to Medieval England. Her knowledge of the period has enabled her to write a complex, page turning thriller that is also a story of resilience, rebuilding and finding love. Without using any modern psycho-babble, she creates a terrifying villain who is quite obviously a psychopath. Will good triumph over evil? Will the characters we love live to writer their happy ending? I highly recommend you read Warrior's Surrender and find out!

For those who like a generous but tasteful splash of hot and spicy in their romance, but also value a well-researched, historically accurate setting and an engaging story, Warrior's Surrender is a great find. Ms Carter's writing reminds me of Georgette Heyer, who was renowned for her in-depth research and the way she seamlessly wove accurate historical detail into her stories - never allowing it to get in the way, but instead building a wonderfully evocative word picture of a previous era. Warrior's Surrender is set around the time of the Norman conquest. With strong characters, an intriguing plot, and plenty of action, this is a sexy romance to be savoured - I rate it at 4.5 stars. I was provided with a review copy by the author, in exchange for an honest review, which I have provided. I look forward to reading more by this author - she has a bright future ahead of her.

Excellent, well written, felt like I was there!
It is not often I read a novel so immersed in it's time that I feel a part of it but this had all my attention. I was riveted! The research done in preparation must have been phenomenal. I found myself looking up words and definitions of the keep, rushes etc. This author is magnificent. Lady Frey and Lord Sebastian exceeded my expectations as strong female and male alphas. Applause. Well done! I am adding the author to my follow list.

Great historical romance. This is my first read by EE Carter and I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to read more by Ms Carter.
Oh how I just love Sebastian and Frey!! I love that Frey is not just a timid woman that cowers to everything going on around her. She is strong physically and mentally.
Sebastian is strong, wise, faithful and handsome. What more can you ask for in your dream man?
I hope this will become a series. I want to know more about Gaines' story.

Elizabeth Ellen Carter’s “Warrior’s Surrender” is a hot historical romance. Frey, the leading lady, seems caught in an untenable situation. Sebastian, the sexy Norman dog who rescues Frey at least twice, is all you could want in a leading man. The storyline is good, with lots of twists and turns and places where it makes you wait while holding your breath! The intimate scenes are nookie-rrific. Everything in place for a lovely standalone read with a sweet ending.

A sweeping adventure that travels through Northumbria 1070's for several years, Warrior's Surrender is an amazing story. Steeped in history and in depth characters, I was captured by the first few pages that set up the story. Sebastian de la Croix, a young man fighting for his Norman lord, spares a young girl, Lady Alfreya, her injured father and brother when he was part of a raiding party against the Saxons. Now, Sebastian is Baron of Tyrswick, that same place he had spared the lives, as reward from the king for protecting his lands. Alfreya is now a grown woman who has been striving to get back her land with a small band of loyal men. But her efforts are wasted when her small brother becomes ill and her men are starving, so she surrenders to Sebastian who takes her back to Tyrswick. As Sebastian realizes she is the maiden he has thought of for years, her courage and passionate nature captures him.
Sebastian wants to make her his wife and as she has little options, they wed. But as fate often has a hand, they quickly grow to have strong feelings for each other and their life seems balance out. But evil from the past comes forth in the form of a demented knight bent on revenge and securing the lands of Tryswick, while a madman also roams killing innocent girls.
I fell in love with Sebastian and Frey but this story runs the gamut of emotions. Dark forces, adversity, suspense and a little of the supernatural capture the essence of the times and will have you on the edge of your seat to find out what will happen next. Such a strong passionate story of love, honor and good against evil will be remembered for a long time.
This is the first full story I have read by this author but I cannot wait to read more..

The first few pages of the book made google my best friend. It’s filled with so many historical events and names and I had to check google every minute just so I won’t be lost.
Frey and Seb were not hard to fall in love with. I really liked that, unlike what I expected, they didn’t spend much time fighting what was between them. Instead they were both calm and straightforward with their affections.
- Why did Frey have to share a room in a 4 storied building? Shouldn’t there have been more than enough room?
Unfortunately I found the book boring. Maybe medieval just isn’t my thing. It was meant to be a nice plot but the characters in my opinion were too “cold”. Despite what we were supposed to believe, the book flew by months and the characters barely interacted in those months. The actions and words were mechanical. I was really disappointed cause I had high expectations due to the reviews.
I wouldn’t say I really like the author’s writing... it was too “in my face” and I had to read slower than usual to make sure I took it all in. Sometimes the pages just looked jam packed. I had to overly increase my font to be able to read with feeling pressured from the words.

ENEMY MEETS ENEMY AND FALL IN LOVE? SIGN ME UP.
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE DISLIKE AT FIRST SIGHT TO MAKE A GOOD LOVE STORY.
I wrote this review days after reading this story so my recollection may be abit hazy some parts.
HERO was assigned to take over the heroine's family keep and of course she's against it but her worry and love for her ailing brother took precedence. Sebastian never expected the beautiful waif who would defy him so openly yet concede to him for peace. She's gotten under his skin and she's also stubborn for not listening to him most of the time. Sebastian is a typical historical warrior hero whom you are already familiar with if you have read enough that I don't need to elaborate.
HEROINE is a tough woman who took over as leader of clan after her father's death and as odd as it is for a woman to lead, her fellow warriors accept her reign until Sebastian comes into their lives. I honestly can't remember much of why what happened and that speaks volume of how this story didn't etched itself in my mind.

Suspenseful and romantic!
Warrior's Surrender was both suspenseful and romantic and I couldn't put it down. Sebastian and Alfreya were so perfect together and I enjoyed their confrontations immensely. The villain was dastardly and the whole story highly entertaining. The little paranormal element only added to the storyline. Will definitely be looking for more from this author.

I enjoy Elizabeth Ellen Carter's writing and it's a while since I've read one of her stories. Like everything else of hers, her research appears meticulous to me for this period of English history. I thought Frey was a wonderful heroine, and Sebastian a worthy hero, and I loved their discovery of each other through this story. The side plot of the terrible murders made for an interesting detour, and the outcome of this plot line I found particularly interesting.
