This was a good old fashioned soap opera taking place mostly in Ireland around the 1930s and 40s. This is the third book in the Deverill Chronicles and while it can be read as a standalone novel, I highly recommend reading the other books first. This was my first introduction to the series and there were just so many characters with different backstories that it could be overwhelming at times.
Like I said before, there is definitely a soap opera quality to the book as there is a lot of sleeping around, secrets, illegitimate children, love, betrayal, murder, etc. which make it an entertaining read. And when you add in an Irish castle as a setting, well how could I not love that? The story does bounce around quite a bit from character to character but for me the heart of the book was the story lines of JP and Martha. Definitely recommend especially if you are a fan of fiction from this time period and setting.

A great book. A lot of twists and turns in this story. Shocking history coming out involving family members. Ghosts, love, death, sadness and happiness. A must read. Great ending. Highly recommend.

This is the last in a trilogy.
This book didn't grab me as much as the first two. It took me a while to get into it and I found it a bit slow at the start. Once I got going and met all the characters from the first two books the story took off. Then the last few chapters turned into mush for me. Everyone was forgiving everyone and for certain things I think would be hard to forgive. There was also a lot about God going on with this forgiveness that just annoyed me and a lot of tears.
There were also a lot of coincidences, too many for my liking. I know Ireland is a small country and we're close neighbors with England but really!!! I had to suspend disbelief quite a few times.
However, I loved the backdrop to the story. Ireland is a really good background when it's done well. As a saga it's a great read and would have to be read in order or the reader would be lost.

I just loved this series, but could not continue as my library was closed do to COVID 19. I found that I could borrow an audio copy of this wonderful book from Overdrive. I have never read a audiobook and had no desire to do so.
Why would I want to listen to a book when I love to read? I was pleasantly surprised. I just loved to hear the voices of this epic tale.It was a delight to hear this story with Irish accents.

We begin this sequel in 1939 with Martha Wallace who is coming from America to find her birth mother. Martha was adopted as an infant and went to America with her happy parents. What secrets she will discover.
The Deverill’s have lost their castle to Bridie Doyle now Countess diMarcantonio. She was the daughter of the cook at the Deverill’s castle. She is now the mistress to the castle. How did this happen? Lots of drama to come.
Kittiy Deverill holds the key to this family, but her long lost love Jack O’Leary has just returned to Ireland. Does Jack still love Kitty?
This novel has everything love,loss secrets and even ghosts of the past, it is the wonderful conclusion to the Deverill Chronicles.
This saga is beautifully written. I couldn’t stop listening to it and will miss the wonderful Irish voices.

Het 3e boek in de reeks en voor mij viel dit boek erg goed mee, het leest vlot en er gebeurt veel in de verhaallijn. Heel wat geheimen komen aan het licht en deze zorgen voor de nodige commotie bij de Deverills. Voor mij was het boek alles behalve saai maar wel een beetje te voorspelbaar. Toch blijft het een erg leuke reeks om te lezen.

Book 3 of the series of 3; built around Castle Deverill. Again great characters, excellent plots, delightful prose, terrific twist and turns and unputdownable. The story is at the edge of plausible. Ghosts - not so sure about. Absolutely loved it.

Ļoti slikta literatūra, bet ko lai dara, ja ziepju operas ir daļa no manas audzināšanas un ik pa brīdim smadzenes ļoti prasa ko šādu... Nesen youtube uzgāju pāris "Telenovellas are hell" video, nu arī Deverilu piedzīvojumi noteikti tādi ir. Bet zvaigznes dod jau bevis par kvalirāti, bet to, kā grāmata luek justies. Nu un ja es gribēju patverties intrigu un sakritību pasaulē, tad šī nudien bija īstā vieta.

Then there's Bridie Doyle, who has come back to Ireland after spending many years in America. She returns extremely rich and with a Count for a husband; in fact, she has enough money to buy the Castle Deverill. The very same castle that she worked in! However, things aren't perfect for Bridie. Even though she has the castle, her husband, and a son, she feels something is missing and this becomes especially apparent when her husband starts to stray and the whole town knows it. Then there's Kitty Deverill who lives a quiet and happy life with Robert and her children. She has long said goodbye to her first love, Jack, and has succumb to her life here in Ireland even though her family no longer owns the castle. But in walks Jack O'Leary, back into her life, causing her to question everything and stir up emotions that have been dormant for quite awhile. However, he returns with his wife and kids in tow, so it appears he has moved on. The Secret of the Irish Castle by Santa Montefiore is a sweeping saga about family, fortunes lost and won, secrets, and love. It's a fantastic ending to a great historical trilogy.

I'm in love with this series! This is book 3 of the Deverill Chronicles and I'm starting book 4 right away. It's a great family soap opera set in Ireland, but you do make visits to London and America. There are ghosts, a castle, mafia, love, betrayal, murder, nuns... What's not to love??

“El último secreto de los Deverill” es el la 3era entrega de “Las crónicas de Deverill” y el cierre de la trilogía involucra que todos los personajes regresan a Ballinakelly y Santa Montefiore cierra las vidas de aquellos que protagonizaron los dos libros anteriores: “Canciones de amor y guerra” e “Hijas del castillo Deverill”. Por supuesto que el drama no se hace esperar y Bridie quien en su juventud fue sirvienta de los Deverill, es la dueña del castillo, casada con el Conde de Marcantonio, quien en pocas semanas de haber visitado Irlanda para comprar el castillo, ya se había acostado con muchas mujeres del lugar. Por cierto, “el Conde” tiene SU historia y… ¡Mamita querida!
Ambientado en 1939, tiempo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, tenemos a Kitty casada, viviendo tranquila dispuesta a aceptar el destino que le tocó; Jack O'Leary regresa casado y con tres hijos luego de haber pasado un tiempo escondido de la mafia en ARGENTINA. (La autora tiene siempre presente a nuestro país) y se dedica a su profesión: veterinario. También surge una nueva generación de personajes, los hijos y sobrinos, que tendrán protagonismo en ésta historia pero Kitty, Bridie y Jack, son personas adultas y maduras e intentarán seguir adelante con sus vidas, más allá de los rencores, ofensas, el odio y la búsqueda del perdón. Como dice Kitty: se sacuden el polvo y siguen, porque sobre todo las mujeres Deverill son sobrevivientes.
En este libro se cerrarán tramas que vienen de los dos anteriores y, será esa nueva generación que me tuvo en vilo, porque la historia comienza en donde terminó “Hijas del Castillo Deverill”: JP y Martha y su accidentado reencuentro en Dublín y a los pocos capítulos la historia da un giro que…me hizo sufrir. Así que tenemos: la atracción entre estos dos, Bridie y su mujeriego esposo y la infelicidad de ésta mujer; Bridie no es personaje a odiar sino que es una mujer a la que sentí empatía por todo lo que sufrió. Pero a su vez tenemos la historia de Martha que busca a sus padres biológicos y a JP que se enlista en las RAF, de manera que empiezan a suceder tantas cosas y así poco a poco Santa Montefiore va cerrando la vida de cada personaje, nos prepara para despedirnos de la familia Deverill que algunos cumplen su ciclo de vida, pero sin antes contarnos la historia de Maggie O'Leary y revela la conexión entre los Deverill y los O'Leary y el por qué ambas familias permanecen anclados al castillo.
La guerra acarrea muertes, la historia la conocemos a través de JP que será piloto y también de Harry y de Boysie cuya historia me hizo sacar lágrimas y a los Deverill les afecta directamente, pero también aprendí y conocí lo que fue el “Blitz”, un periodo de bombardeos por parte de Alemania a distintas ciudades de Inglaterra, que duró ocho meses; Y ahí es donde Victoria, la hermana mayor de Kitty, se involucra y ofrece su mansión como hospital. O sea, es una novela histórica pero nada densa, con tintes románticos y con esa prosa que los lectores de Santa ya conocemos. La descripción bella que hace de Irlanda se enlaza con los sucesos que se van dando.
Y por último no quiero olvidarme de los “fantasmas” que sería la parte mágica de la historia, “los fantasmas Deverill” que tienen su encanto pese a que están allí recorriendo el castillo por culpa de la maldición de la última O'Leary que ocupó las tierras.
416 páginas cuya mitad del libro me lo bebí en una tarde porque semejante culebrón atrapa. El cierre de una trilogía que RECOMIENDO leer porque no solo conocerán Irlanda sino a ésta familia, los Deverill que me recuerda a Downton abbey. La trilogía cierra aquí. Pienso que “el perdón” es la palabra para englobar a los tres libros.
Siguen dos libros más: “Tiempo de secretos en Deverill” y “En tierras lejanas”. Cuando los lea conoceré a los personajes.

o my what a dissapointment for me. Too many storylines. Too many adultrous people . Too many non-credible storyplots. Too many reverences to the previous books (yes I know the castle burned down eg). Too many details repeated (eg Yes I know Michael Doyne has dark haircurls). I just finished the book because I wanted to know how it ended. I think 4 Montefiore books in 3 weeks is too much for me...

Me ha gustado tanto o más que los anteriores. Una trama preciosa con unos personajes increíbles. En esta ocasión pasaremos por la Segunda Guerra Mundial y sus consecuencias siempre nefastas para la población.
El final totalmente coherente y que me ha encantado y emocionado a partes iguales. Tenéis que leer esta trilogía 😍

Anno 1939: Martha Wallace reist met haar nanny Mrs. Goodwin naar Dublin; thuis, in Connecticut, heeft ze ontdekt dat ze een adoptiekind is. Ze moet koste wat kost te weten komen wie haar biologische moeder is. Na haar bezoek in het klooster waar ze is geboren, is ze echt teleurgesteld maar er staat een naam op haar geboortecertificaat die hen verder kan helpen. In een tearoom ontmoet ze de aardige JP Deverill die daar met zijn vader Bertie aanwezig is. Ze zijn op slag verliefd en hopen elkaar terug te zien. Maar dit geluk kan niet blijven duren en Martha vertrekt terug naar de States. Mrs. Goodwin gaat niet meer met haar mee, zij zal in Ballinakelly blijven en daar heeft ze haar redenen voor.
Bridie die nu gehuwd is met de flamboyante Cesare, graaf Di Marcantonio, is nu al een week in Ballinakelly. Haar grootmoeder komt te overlijden en haar broer Sean en zijn gezin trekken in het kasteel. Bridie heeft een zoontje en het zou voor hem ook leuk zijn om met zijn neefjes en nichtje op te trekken. Maar Bridie heeft het meeste verdriet om haar andere zoon. Bridie haatte Kitty, ze is verbitterd, heeft pijn en het geheim vreet aan haar. Haar echtgenoot eist dat er een zomerbal plaats vindt en Lady Rowan-Hampton is maar al te graag bereid om Bridie te helpen. Maar Grace kennende heeft zij ook weer een dubbele agenda! En is Bridie wel gelukkig nu ze het kasteel in haar bezit heeft? Verloochent ze niet haar afkomst?
Sinds het nieuws bekend werd dat Bridie het kasteel had gekocht, was Kitty verteerd door woede. Ze is enorm verontwaardigd dat haar jeugdvriendin zoiets had kunnen doen. Kitty weet maar al te goed dat dit een wraakactie is. Ze kon er niets aan doen dat de dingen zo waren verlopen en de waarheid omtrent JP mocht nooit bekend worden. Maar dan komt Martha op de proppen en ook hier weer moet ze een pact sluiten. Als dit nog niet genoeg is om te verwerken, komt ze ook te weten dat haar grote liefde Jack O’Leary terug is gekomen met zijn gezin. Kitty had nooit gedacht dat hij terug zou komen. Ze had een nieuw leven opgebouwd maar ook nu maakt wanhoop zich meester van haar.
De geruchtenmolen komt op gang dat er oorlog op komst is. Voor JP is dit een godsgeschenk, het is zijn manier om al zijn ellende te kunnen vergeten. Ook Celia keert terug na jaren in Zuid-Afrika te hebben gewoond. Samen met haar familie probeert ze weer een rustig bestaan op te bouwen in deze turbulente periode. Verdriet heeft de bovenhand met alle personages. Komt dit ooit nog goed en hoe zit het nu met de vloek van Maggie O’Leary??
Conclusie
Dit is het laatste deel van de trilogie die Santa heeft geschreven. Het speelt zich af tussen 1939 en 1953. Het is ondertussen een jaar geleden dat ik deel twee heb gelezen maar ik zat direct terug in het verhaal. De auteur steekt in de eerste hoofdstukken genoeg informatie zodat je onmiddellijk terug kunt volgen wat er is gebeurd. Aan personages ontbreekt het niet in dit deel en ook maken we kennis met nieuwe en boeiende karakters. Ik zou zoveel kunnen vertellen maar vanwege spoilergevaar is dit niet mogelijk.
Heerlijk om terug haar verhaal te lezen, hoe mooi ze de dingen omschrijft gaande van de natuur, flora en fauna, tot de diepste gevoelens van de personages. Doordat ze dit zo vakkundig aan de dag legt voel je je verbonden met alle personages; hun lief en leed, hun geheimen en hun angsten. Je wordt door haar prachtige schrijfstijl ondergedompeld en je voelt als het ware de liefde die allen hebben voor hun teerbeminde Ierland. Alle personages worden als een magneet terug getrokken naar Ballinakelly waar ze hun jeugdjaren hebben doorgebracht. Het kasteel speelt een belangrijke rol in hun levens.
Ik was zeer benieuwd hoe dit deel zou eindigen en de auteur heeft me zeker niet teleurgesteld. Er gebeuren zoveel dingen dat je versteld doen staan, van wendingen tot cliffhangers. Alle verhaallijnen komen mooi tezamen en dit gaat gepaard met zoveel emoties dat je bij wijlen er zelf melancholisch van wordt. De flashbacks zijn uitmuntend beschreven en mooi verweven in het verhaal. Al hun levens hebben bizarre wendingen gemaakt maar het einddoel is altijd Ballinakelly geweest.
Santa heeft een fenomenale trilogie geschreven met alle nodige ingrediënten. Liefde, haat en nog meer van die rauwe emoties. Het is geen zoetsappig verhaal want ze heeft er veel intriges ingesloten. En ook hier hunkert iedereen naar het verleden en konden ze de klok maar terugdraaien! De tijd heeft vat op hen gekregen en ze moeten allen vergiffenis zoeken. Niemand blijft ongestraft in dit verhaal, niemand is vrij van schuld! Het is niet alleen fictie die je leest maar in dit verhaal zitten levenslessen waar je zelf bij stil staat. Het is een stormachtig relaas dat zich afspeelt in het ruige maar oh zo mooie Ierland.
Het is meer dan prachtig, het is een lovenswaardig einde van een trilogie over een generatie sterke vrouwen. 5 sterren!
Bridie die nu gehuwd is met de flamboyante Cesare, graaf Di Marcantonio, is nu al een week in Ballinakelly. Haar grootmoeder komt te overlijden en haar broer Sean en zijn gezin trekken in het kasteel. Bridie heeft een zoontje en het zou voor hem ook leuk zijn om met zijn neefjes en nichtje op te trekken. Maar Bridie heeft het meeste verdriet om haar andere zoon. Bridie haatte Kitty, ze is verbitterd, heeft pijn en het geheim vreet aan haar. Haar echtgenoot eist dat er een zomerbal plaats vindt en Lady Rowan-Hampton is maar al te graag bereid om Bridie te helpen. Maar Grace kennende heeft zij ook weer een dubbele agenda! En is Bridie wel gelukkig nu ze het kasteel in haar bezit heeft? Verloochent ze niet haar afkomst?
Sinds het nieuws bekend werd dat Bridie het kasteel had gekocht, was Kitty verteerd door woede. Ze is enorm verontwaardigd dat haar jeugdvriendin zoiets had kunnen doen. Kitty weet maar al te goed dat dit een wraakactie is. Ze kon er niets aan doen dat de dingen zo waren verlopen en de waarheid omtrent JP mocht nooit bekend worden. Maar dan komt Martha op de proppen en ook hier weer moet ze een pact sluiten. Als dit nog niet genoeg is om te verwerken, komt ze ook te weten dat haar grote liefde Jack O’Leary terug is gekomen met zijn gezin. Kitty had nooit gedacht dat hij terug zou komen. Ze had een nieuw leven opgebouwd maar ook nu maakt wanhoop zich meester van haar.
De geruchtenmolen komt op gang dat er oorlog op komst is. Voor JP is dit een godsgeschenk, het is zijn manier om al zijn ellende te kunnen vergeten. Ook Celia keert terug na jaren in Zuid-Afrika te hebben gewoond. Samen met haar familie probeert ze weer een rustig bestaan op te bouwen in deze turbulente periode. Verdriet heeft de bovenhand met alle personages. Komt dit ooit nog goed en hoe zit het nu met de vloek van Maggie O’Leary??
Conclusie
Dit is het laatste deel van de trilogie die Santa heeft geschreven. Het speelt zich af tussen 1939 en 1953. Het is ondertussen een jaar geleden dat ik deel twee heb gelezen maar ik zat direct terug in het verhaal. De auteur steekt in de eerste hoofdstukken genoeg informatie zodat je onmiddellijk terug kunt volgen wat er is gebeurd. Aan personages ontbreekt het niet in dit deel en ook maken we kennis met nieuwe en boeiende karakters. Ik zou zoveel kunnen vertellen maar vanwege spoilergevaar is dit niet mogelijk.
Heerlijk om terug haar verhaal te lezen, hoe mooi ze de dingen omschrijft gaande van de natuur, flora en fauna, tot de diepste gevoelens van de personages. Doordat ze dit zo vakkundig aan de dag legt voel je je verbonden met alle personages; hun lief en leed, hun geheimen en hun angsten. Je wordt door haar prachtige schrijfstijl ondergedompeld en je voelt als het ware de liefde die allen hebben voor hun teerbeminde Ierland. Alle personages worden als een magneet terug getrokken naar Ballinakelly waar ze hun jeugdjaren hebben doorgebracht. Het kasteel speelt een belangrijke rol in hun levens.

A fantastic series! This was probably my least favorite of the three but a much needed conclusion to what I think should be renamed as "The Meddling of Lady Grace Rowan-Hampton".

Estoy contenta que haya sido el primer libro del año, este era su momento para leerlo porque lo disfruté muchísimo, hace rato no lloraba así con un libro pero al mismo tiempo reconfortó mi corazón, creo que el final es como debía ser aunque para dos personajes en específico hubiera querido otro.

The Last Secret of the Deverills is the third and last novel in Santa Montefiore's Deverill trilogy. Spanning the course of at least 100 years we follow the Deverill family and all there chaotic wrong doings during England and Ireland's political disputes. We follow young Kitty from an infant all the way up to a mature lady. Despite all the atrocious life choices this family make, I swiftly fell in love with each and every character making this a very engaging read.
My particularly favourite character is Kitty. Strong, determined and willful she is in the center of all the exploits. Reading this novel I became in tune with Kitty and her feelings, following a young girl growing up and doing what is right for the greater good rather than for what one wants. This became heartbreaking at times but as the novel comes full circle you understand why the decisions she makes are detrimental to those around her. Somewhere in this is a life lesson.
Montefiore takes you on a journey from England to Ireland and even to Africa. Her beautiful prose is really something to behold and I thoroughly enjoy her writing. Her books are those that you can take anywhere, whether it is on a hot sunny beach or cosied up on a rainy day. I really cannot recommend her books enough and this delightful trilogy is no exception. If the first book wasn't so jam packed and juicy then I would be giving this a five star but as in most cases, the first just had that extra something special to it. I look forward to reading her expanding novels, although I seem to savour them for the right moment as I never want to not have one of her novels to look forward to on my TBR shelf.

Amazing, such a brilliant story, the 3rd in the Deverill series and in my opinion the best. Right up to the very last page. I cant recommend it highly enough. Its a real joy and i will miss the characters as if tgey were real life friends

Martha reser från Amerika till Irland för att söka efter sin biologiska mor. I byn hennes mor kom ifrån, möter hon den stilige JP Deverill och blir hopplöst förälskad.
Den förmögne Bridie har återvänt till sin barndoms by tillsammans med sin greve. Hon är fast besluten att hämnas sin barndom och kämpar för att ses som ståndsmässig.
Medan den yngre generationen börjar ta över, lever de tidigare fortfarande fast i den gamla förbannelsen över släkten Deverill. Ska de någonsin få vila i frid?
”Den sista hemligheten” är lika bra som de två tidigare delarna. Författaren har ett berättarspråk som suger mig in i handlingen och jag älskar varje stund. Blandningen av längtan och sökande, kärlek och hat, sorg och förlåtelse är perfekt.
Denna bok skulle vara den sista och avslutande delen i sviten om Deverill, men vad jag förstår är det ytterligare två på gång. Längtar redan!

I did enjoy this, but the problem with sequels is if you don't read them continuously, it's difficult to remember details of the plot. I've read tens of books since book two of this series and I struggled with the fine details of this, despite various recaps interspersed throughout. I would highly recommend, now that this trilogy is complete, to just read the whole lot in one go!

Sigh. I'm actually rather bummed that my journey with the Deverills is over. Even though the book did what I feared and wrapped some things up easier and neater than I would like, some of the ending parts were satisfying and I think I'm going to have a bit of a book hangover from this trilogy. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. I already miss the beautifully descriptive, emotion-evoking writing and the vivid pictures of Ireland and London that Montefiore provides throughout the book.
Would I read (listen) to this series again at some point? I think I would. Do I recommend it for people who love 1) Ireland; 2) historical fiction; 3) epic family sagas? Absolutely. I've read some of the negative, nitpicky (in my opinion) reviews about all three of these books, and while I agree with a few of the points made, I don't think any of the negatives about the series really dampened my enthusiasm for reading it. The books move slowly, and let things unfold over time, so if you're looking for a quick read, this isn't it. But if you want something to savor and lose yourself in for a little while, definitely check out the Deverill Chronicles. And then let me know what you thought!

Ik vond dit boek wel beter dan de vorige twee. Maar toch mis ik iets... Andere boeken van Montefiore zijn pakkender en mooier. Ik vind dat Montefiore teveel geschiedenis op haar bordje heeft gelegd. Soms wordt er niks anders verteld dan de geschiedenis terwijl het naar mijn idee geen toegevoegde waarde heeft in dit verhaal. Het gaat om de personages die elkaar moeten vergeven en met elkaar moeten leven. Maar om nou gedetailleerd de geschiedenis te vertellen had wat mij betreft niet gehoeven. Komt misschien ook omdat ik geen fan van geschiedenisleer ben.
Ik vind de hoofdstukken te lang. Hierin switcht ze regelmatig van personage. Niet alleen wat warrig maar soms ook irritant. Desalniettemin ben ik blij dat ik deze serie gelezen heb al zou ik hem niet zo snel aanraden als andere boeken van haar.

I have read more than a few of Santa Montefiore's novels and have always found them to be relaxing reads. A perfect choice maybe for todays troubled times.
The Last Secret of the Deverills is in fact third in a series, so having not read the previous two one was unsure if it would work for me. No problem as I quickly became immersed in the lives of the families in Ballinakelly in rural Ireland.
Santa has once again woven an atmospheric tale of love with a touch of the supernatural. Recommended to anyone that needs taking out of themselves, a lovely read.
