In defiance of the odds, Lilian is within a month of proving her bond, driving desperate Odds Managers to ever increasing bounties on her life—every step beyond the security of the cartel is perilous. Within the cartel, she must put aside her fear, giving all her attention to her duty and the decorum demanded of an apprentice. The success of the Nightingale launch has brought Lucius and Serengeti into the center of Twelve Systems commerce. As the Nightingale Command Crew is gathers on Metricelli Prime to prepare for the dangerous voyage to the Thirteenth System, whispers of pirates emerge from the Eleventh and Twelfth Systems. A decade before, pirates almost to toppled Serengeti, their reemergence so close to the Nightingale launch endangers all Lucius has achieved. When a group of free-traders arrive from those distant systems, they threaten to resurrect an ancient Mercio scandal that could undermine the honor of Blooded Dagger and Serengeti, and imperil all Lucius' values. In the final days of Lilian’s apprenticeship, danger lurks in every shadow. It will require all Lucius’ power and Lilian’s courage to achieve her bond proof.

Award-winning author EG Manetti has always enjoyed a vivid imagination and occasional scribbling. Her epic science fiction series, The Twelve Systems Chronicles, blends the intrigue and danger of space opera with the passion and social rigidity of historical romance.
The ten-volume series began in 2012, with The Cartel: The Apprentice, Volume 1, and completed in 2021 with Thorn Bearer: Thornraven, Volume 3. The series has received four Paranormal Guild Reviewers Choice Awards, seven InD’tale RONE (Reward for Novel Excellence) nominations with five volumes award finalist badges. Shield Bearer: Thornraven, Volume 2 received the 2021 RONE for Science Fiction.
Elemental Fire: The Hidden Realms #1, her first venture into fantasy, combines her favorite aspects of urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and action/adventure genres.
A former information technology project manager, EG resides in Florida with her beloved (often confounded) husband and their severely OCD Jack Russell Terrier. She writes as often as possible, cooks exceptionally, and gardens adequately.
The Twelve Systems Chronicles are epic science fiction romance that blends elements of space opera with the intrigue and suspense of a political thriller. “With characters that jump off the page, love that is forbidden yet unstoppable mixed with top-notch worlds and technology, sci-fi has never looked so good or become so addictive!” ~ InD'Tale Magazine, February 2018.

Time is almost up for Lilian's bond (aka three year contract where you work for your bondholder both in mind and *body*). However, there are a whole lot of people who have been making large gambling bets that she won't live to see the day her bond ends, so it's in their best interest to make sure she doesn't survive it, by means both fair and foul. In the meantime, there are lots of other things going on at work (think corporate intrigue but also with some religious-zealot-mafia type forces at play), and with Lilian's work friends and family. I was also very happy to see this installment went back to having a big action scene! The fire will yield! (you'll understand the reference if you read it)
Now to wait impatiently for the next book to be published. It'll be worth the wait.
I am still dumbfounded as to why there have not been more readers of this series to date. The world and character building is outstanding and while there is romantic erotica woven into the story, which might turn off some readers, it is but one part of this amazing series.
This is possibly one of, if not the best, new science fiction series I have read in years.
I am normally a solitary reader, but right now my soul is crying out for a dissecting book discussion with others who adored Bond Proof - and the rest of the Twelve Systems Chronicles. What would we talk about? The endless nuances. The threads of prescience. The fascinating society of the Twelve Systems. The complicated characters. The drama. The fight scenes. The twisted, slow-burn romance with high intensity sensuality that might just become a love story for the ages. There would be no shortage of discussion topics.
I began Bond Proof with trepidation. There was a lot of ground to cover to reach the conclusion of Lilian's story and tie up countless little mysteries that have stacked upon one another. I was positive I would be disappointed as I so often am when authors conclude a lengthy series, and plot points get short-changed or it is obvious the author is ready to be done and move on to the next project. What was clear to me, though, when I finished Bond Proof, is that E.G. Manetti loves her characters. She isn't tired of them. She isn't short-cutting their "happily ever after." She isn't even all that concerned with tying up all the plot points, and in fact, is introducing more intrigues. Manetti crafted a perfect, sublime ending to this segment of Lilian's life. I literally sighed. Not in my head. Out loud. And then grinned because only a master like Manetti can craft such an ending.
The journey of this book is light years longer than the span of time it actually takes to conclude Lilian's indenture to Serengeti. It benefits from startling leaps to the past, a device not much used by Manetti in any of the other Twelve Chronicles books. I was fascinated to see the past trials and the impact on current events that are manipulated in the story. The complexities just fold in on themselves.
It is nearly impossible to write a spoiler-proof review of this book. I would have to nearly write a book myself just to explain the snaking plot(s). So I won't. Instead, I will leave you with questions, impressions, a sample of the beauty of the language, and the honor and delight of the characters. Care to discuss them with me?
* Do the mystic elements of this series continue to grow? The Five Warriors are an increasingly important sub-plot. At times I think Lilian is Adelaide reincarnated, and the ties to that cloudy past are threaded even more tightly in Bond Proof. How Manetti manages to draw so much drama out of this link is amazing. (And the little Easter egg when Helena teases Lucius about trading his soul to Socraide Omsted is exquisitely funny if you are tuned in). Helena has a sense of humor - who knew?
* Is Lilian a closet Universalist? In the end, my opinion is no, but I think the Universalists just might set the Warrior class on their ears as regards certain societal stigmas. We learn more about the history of the Universalists, their core belief system, their tragic past, and Trevelyan's struggle with balancing his Warrior lifestyle with his Universalist past. Such valor stunned me.
* What role will Raleigh the Free Trader play in the future? In the final throes of this part of the series, Manetti has introduced one of her most intriguing characters to date. He is complex, talented, strangely connected to Milord, and a bit of a rogue. I loved every second he was on a page. I also have high hopes for him in the next series installments. (But I must say there was a scene I thought missing in his elevation at Bright Star).
* Women as heroes is a strong theme - discuss. Lilian never stops being one of the most heroic characters I've ever read. But what about Flavia and Mrs. Zdenka and Helena and Katleen? All have incredible moments during Bond Proof. I was completely engrossed in the team of women set to protect the Faesetili stronghold. There was such a medieval feel to this scene set-up and its climax.
*How does the relationship between Lilian and Milord evolve as her apprenticeship is winding down? Of course no one dares to call it a relationship. However, cracks are obvious in the veneer of the code of conduct and others have noticed. How much danger will it portend for Lilian? As an aside, those moments where Lucius seeks comfort from Lilian are heart melting. And the final volley between them in the last pages is superb.
*Why did the author introduce the concept of consort alliances? Hmmmmmm........That Estella, is she manipulating again?
*How does the author pique your interest for future storylines? I have just one thing to say about that - Katleen spits fully in somebody's face. It will definitely have repercussions in a yet-to-be-penned installment of the Twelve Systems Chronicles.
*What intrigues remain? Manetti strives to move certain mysteries along, but two main stories still niggle at the back of my brain. One is integrated in the entire Warrior society, and that is the real nature of the relationships between Adelaide and the Five Warriors. I think something will be revealed that will shake the society to its core. The other is more personal. Just who double-crossed Lilian's father in his black trade activities and set her on the path of paying for his sins.
*What revelation surprised you the most? This was easy for me, and I don't think it really contains spoilers. What is spoiler-y is the reaction of the revelation by those who surround Lilian. At one point, she says, "Expectations? I hold no expectations. I dare not. They are too dangerous." These four tiny sentences made me go still, and said so much about Lilian's journey as an apprentice and her demeanor.
By now, it is clear this is probably my favorite series of all time. I feel smarter when I read it. It makes me think. I become curious. I revel in the strangeness. Characters with such honor make me want to be a better person. But this book? At the end, Bond Proof just made me think with joy about how Lilian will be the same but different in the future.
This once, it is well he sees so much. “It was on the day of my birth festival that I discovered what they had done. A package arrived from Gariten with what were to be my cotillion pearls. They were awful. Overlarge and mixed with emeralds, they were a gift for a woman grown, or a doxy.”
Milord’s free hand strokes her shoulder. When did she begin to tremble? She had not thought this would be so difficult. “Maman went pale and then began to rant about trading children for emeralds. I was to flee from the darkness. The cousin became enraged, accusing Maman of being selfish and lacking honor, that the wedlock with Gariten was for Maman’s benefit. I knew it for a lie when I heard it.”
Anger floods with the recall of the cousin’s calumny. Milord’s thumb strokes her collarbone, encouraging her to continue. “The history of the contract was in Sinead’s Shrine, and as I was sixteen, they provided me access. Once I understood what the northern cousins had done, I could not understand why Maman permitted the woman to arrange my cotillion. With Keeper Waiman’s assistance we were able to discover that Gariten had arranged it all, including that the cotillion would be held at the home of one of his commerce partners and that he planned to attend. He may have planned to compel me to return with him to Socraide Prime. I know not.”
“Socraide’s sword.” Milord’s hands tighten. “Did the keeper not suspect?”
“It was Keeper Waiman’s first season.” She cannot resist turning her fingers within milord’s and clinging. “The former keeper, who is the current Lord Prelate, had been elevated to Sinead’s Canon Master and relocated to Sinead’s World. When he learned what went forward, he aided us in having the cousin evicted from Katleen’s house and banning the cousins from ever entering.”
“That was why your mother was deteriorating. She knew the cousin was in league with Gariten but could not halt her.”
“I believe so. With Gariten involved, I dared not remain in Crevasse City and there was naught in the universe that could have compelled me to attend a cotillion of his devising.”
“So you left the next day.” Milord’s hand cups her face, turning to meet her with dark eyes filled with compassion. “What of Dean Joseph?”
“He was enraged on my behalf and offered to arrange a cotillion for me on Mulan, but I could not tolerate the notion.”
“You never had a cotillion?” Milord’s thumb strokes her chin.
As much as his compassion warms her, it is not necessary. What little interest in cotillions remained after she discovered the cousins’ perfidy was lost with Ronan’s death and her anger at the Universalists for making outcasts of those who went to save the settlements. “I do not regret it. It would not have been the same without Maman, and mine was so late in the season, there were but two others I would have attended.”
“The pearls were sold with all else?”
Honor is my blade and shield. She could say naught more, but there is no purpose in withholding. “Sold, yes, but long before the ruin. I used them to fund my entrance into the commodities exchanges.”
Milord’s eyes narrow. “I thought those funds came from your stipend.”
Honor knows not fear. “When I refused to return to Crevasse City for a proper cotillion, Gariten slashed my stipend in half. It was enough for clothes, transit to visit Maman and Katleen, but not much more. Had I an interest in cotillions, I could not fund the wardrobe or other aspects.”
Milord frowns. “You took private quarters at twenty. Your accounts showed income that was meager for a cartouche heir, but substantial nonetheless.”
“Milord did not have full access to my funds from the commodities exchanges,” Lilian says. “Although much was reinvested, steady flows were moved to a secondary account that I augmented with wagers. Those funds appeared in my account as if the Grey Gyre stipend.”
Before milord can reach the next conclusion, she adds, “At nineteen, I refused to join Gariten on Socraide Prime to be tutored in his enterprises. I wished to be nowhere near what, by then, I knew was black and gray commerce. He threatened to sever my stipend at twenty when I became an adult. I began to work the indulgences. I took my winnings in commerce tokens. The day of my twentieth birth festival, I opened the secondary account in Crevasse City. Unless one knew to search, it appeared as if funds flowed in from Grey Gyre and out to my primary account.”
Lucius is stunned. It is no wonder the woman thinks it liberty to spend the day abed tinkering with algorithms. At nineteen she created a shell enterprise and funded it with legitimate but untraceable funds to maintain the appearance that she received an heir’s stipend.
As expected, this final (*) book in the series includes everything we have been waiting for. There's politics, romance, shoot-outs, martial arts, intrigue, honor and dedication, good and evil, and more. Plus, there are the surprises. There are even hints of true love, which has been obscured in this quasi-feudal society.
- The big battle and the little one were outstanding. Lilian is lethal. - As the apprentices near the end of their tenure, relationships begin to form and strengthen. This results in a lot of characters to keep track of, but they are all interwoven that you see them often. Plus at least one "mature" couple finds happiness. - Oh Katleen. - I tagged the first red-shirt right away, but the second was a surprise. - I like Tiger. - There are more sex scenes, and more sexy clothes, than the middle books, similar to #6. - There is one thread that I hoped would be resolved in this book (*).
(*) Note that this trilogy has extended to 7 books. This one brings closure to Lilian's time as an apprentice. However, it is obvious that there is more story to tell - plus it's mentioned in the afterword. This is not a cliff-hanger, but ends with a moment to celebrate and rest.
I received an accidental ARC ahead of the publication date. I plan to purchase an official copy when it is released.
Such an amazing series; so complex and engaging! I absolutely recommend if you love Sci-Fi with a side of erotica.
But damn. If I'd done some research prior to reading this one, I would have enjoyed it so much more.
WARNING: ***This is NOT the last book of the series.***
It's just the end of Lilian's apprenticeship.
A fact that both thrilled and disappointed me.
Disappointed because I went into this one with huge expectations of resolution to every single outstanding plot arc. Instead, not only was nothing resolved, but the author continued to add new characters and story threads!
Thrilled because OMG the story will continue!
There's no question that I'll be re-reading this series in the near future. It's that good!
Lilian is close to successfully completing her trial by ordeal and proving her bond. If you have read the first 6 books in the series you will want to read this one. You will be rewarded with a satisfying end to The Apprentice series.
It has been wonderful to see Lilian and Lucius as their relationship evolves in a way not typical for Master and Apprentice. He does not tire of her physical company as many bondholders typically do and this is noted among her peers.
There's a bit of everything you have come to expect in this series; martial arts, deception, intrigue, battles, pirates, secrets, and hope.
This is the end to this series but there are more adventures ahead for Lilian and her friends. I cannot wait to find out the direction of Lilian and Lucius' relationship now that the social dynamic has changed. The author created a detailed world and interesting characters that pulled me in. I look forward to the next installment.
This installment is back on track and better than ever! Everything we love about this series is present and the very best part? Lillian will FINALLY have proven her bond! That means we get to see her as a free and competent woman in future books. Oh, the wait will kill me!!
Still good, even if, as in previous books, we feel that the author unnecessarily lengthens the story, but not too much recaps like at the beginning of this series.
So... I have to wait ONE YEAR to read the sequel... I understand the author need time to write, but I think it's a good sign when the reader is like an addict and ask to have the next book as soon as possible.
Merged review:
Reread review.
I loved this series. There is a lot of good things, and there is also things that could be better, but that's normal - I'm pretty sure that it was the first publication for this author. And for a first publication, let me tell you, it's amazing!
The best thing for me is the world building (including the past History), the five warriors' religion, all the strictures, the (I think) influence of the japanese culture, the solid secondary characters and the steamy connexion between Lilian and Milord. All these strengths amply counterbalance the weaknesses of the story.
In book 7, the main weakness for me is
Another thing, less important, was
I can't wait for the next series in this universe!
And this was the last published volume of this series, I will now have to wait 9 months - 9 MONTHS ! - to read the next !!!!! Lilian's bond is almost at reach but she forbids herself to think of tomorrow ("there is only this day"), the people who waged against her are getting desperate and ready to do anything to have her dead, assassins are hired and any means are employed. What will become of Lucius and Lilian ? How will her life change ? How will her family's life change ? Is there going to be a conversation between Estella and Lilian, at last ? (I'd luuuurve to watch that one !!!). Are new adventures awaiting our heroes (of course, there are, the questions is stupid but I'd love to know what's coming up next !). Suspense, people, *suspense* !!! Oh hell, 9 months to wait...
I have mixed feelings for this series. On the one hand, I like how complex and real the society is while on the other hand, this same complexity is almost barbaric—primeval in its philosophy. I both love and hate how it illustrates a society of equality, where women can have the same position as men but still be chained by mores and practices, even more so than men.
As I read along, I feel extremely frustrated that there’s no powerful women greater than Lucius, the male deuteragonist. Throughout the series, Lucius keeps on triumphing against women, in commerce and in bed. For commerce, the once third-place cartel was displaced by Serengeti and its Preeminence is a woman. You might think I’m just nitpicking but the author could’ve made the Preeminence a man! But why a woman??? Lilian being subservient is already too much, why does she have to choose for the loser to be another woman? Another strike is the third-system governor who is also a woman—a woman who was also, in a way, was “conquered” by Lucius by way of blackmail——and speaking of the governor——yes, the detail of the blackmail was also another evidence that women are still expected differently than men—these points are sad because the author is a woman and I thought this would be all about girl power yet in the end it still feeds the male ego——I suppose, this is a hint of the author’s principles?
Another point which I really don’t like at all, no matter how reasonable it was put, is ADULTERY. No, just, no. This abhorrence is a result of my upbringing and what society is preaching today so, in the future, where relationships may evolve differently, extra marital affairs may be accepted but for me, no, it will never be. In fact, I just wanted Estella to disappear already OR for there to be NO ROMANCE between Lucius and Lilian OR for Estella to goddamn be healthy so that Lilian and Lucius would never be intimate! In. The. First. Place.
I may be idealistic in my notion of marriage but it is either being loyal in both mind and body OR NONE AT ALL.
This review has been boiling inside me but I feel LILIAN DESERVE BETTER THAN SECOND PLACE. As Lucius admitted he won’t give Lilian everything because his heart is Estella’s — not the exact phrase but this is the gist of it and I’m confident I’m right with my interpretation.
No matter what, physically or emotionally, adultery is adultery even though it was sweetened so that it’ll go down nicely.
To be honest, the Twelve Systems Chronicles would’ve gone well without any romantic developments, Lilian proving herself and rising up from the ashes is worth it to read alone. I love the sex scenes though, keep it but the romance—in fact, I think a lot of people would read the series if the female protagonist is an aromantic-sexual.
AND, for what I’ve written above, dear author, you could try reading or watching—readers too—the TWELVE KINGDOMS anime/Japanese novel. This anime is one of the best and THE best for girl power genres and character development.
I’ve already read Chalice Bearer, the first book of the second installment, and lemme say that THANK GOD. And for what its worth, I’m glad of what Lilian initially did but at the same time I’m sad because Lucius still “won” in the end while Lilian will forever be “chained”.
Despite all these points, I will still read the series and wherever it will be taken especially since Estella’s out of the picture—I’m not sorry for this just so you know—it’s fascinating enough.
This day I live. All the adversity, challenges to her family, her friends and her life no four words could sum up this powerful and moving conclusion to the beginning of Lilian’s story. But those are a good indicator. From beginning to end, disgrace to triumph Lilian and her story has been engaging, captivating, adventurous, exciting, at times heartbreaking but never lacking in drawing the reader into a most unique world. Ending and new beginning I look forward to the next chapter of Lilian’s story. A wonderful series. Thoroughly enjoyable from book one til now. A most wonderful ending or beginning depending on your point of view. Highly recommend you go to the beginning and become immersed in the world of The Twelve Systems you won’t be disappointed!!
Absolutely loved this entry in The Twelve Systems Chronicle! After leaving us hanging at the end of Nightingale, EG Manetti delivers the goods and more in this book. Ties up a lot of loose ends, but still edgy as you wonder if Lilian really will succeed. Great characters, great world, great read! Looking forward to the next one! There was a nice teaser about #8.
*update: I am re reading the entire series, kind of like a Netflix binge. It is just as good, if not better than before. I am enjoying reading it in print, not Kindle. I've picked up some details that I may have missed in racing through the action (both steamy and battle). Worth the re-read!
So I just finished book 7 and now on to book 8! It’s a very enjoyable series that feels like it reads as one giant book. Even as I will be moving from one series to another my impression is it will just keep rolling on! Which for me is a very happy thing because it is a series where I want to keep reading to find out what is going to happen next! More books are always appreciated, unless the main characters are annoying, but these characters are interesting and I want more! So let’s see what happens next!
The world building is phenomenal, the story is enthralling, Gloribelle is a light in the darkness, and I love this series. I was saddened by the loss of a character that seemed to have much potential, and I will miss the characters who will no longer be as important to Lilian's ongoing adventures. But Bond Proof is an incredible finish for this part of Lilian's life.
