My name is Thomas Wright. I've been in more near-death experiences than Houdini or Evel Knievel. Rose has kept me on task and bugs me about my love life constantly. I think she truly enjoys needling me about... well... everything. My pack has grown and working together, we were able to put the smack down on some pretty epic beings with some expert help and a bit of luck.
It still isn't enough. I have to throw in with the Council of Mages to go after Vassago and save Vivian's life. When I find myself head of the Taskforce searching for Vassago, it becomes clear that there's more than one mole in the Council of Mages. Somebody is out for my head, and I have to survive backstabbers, demonic beings, and the occasional zombie outbreak before I can start finding the truth and track down Vassago.
Basic, derivative, entertaining but very poorly edited
This is pretty typical modern day mage story. The plot uses many common tropes. The main trope is a mage who, unbeknownst to him, has hidden powers, from parents who were killed when he was a kid, who has been in hiding, but doesn't know why, who finds out he's special, who has unbreakable rules, that he breaks, for the girl, etc.. The backdrop is modern day. The supporting characters are two dimensional, at best. The magic system is a mess of conflicting and cloudy powers and motivations. The editing is incredibly bad. I stopped counting when I reached 30 typos and grammatic errors. This work could also use some expert content editing.
That said, the protagonist's story is compelling and the writing style is casual and flows well. Of course, the plot and its devices are obsurd, but that is to be expected from this type of pulp fiction. I finished both books, but was disappointed in the ending of the second book. Too many plot twists in one scene makes it hard to reconcile characters and motivations.
Once again this was a great story, Dresden files meets prepper fiction. I blazed through the book, buoyed by well-orchestrated action, and solid characters. I ache to see Krystiana get her due, and was shocked by the turn of events near the end, and surprised at my reaction to Vassago’s actions. Can’t wait for book 3!
Let's just say I can't wait for the next book! I'm totally hooked on this series. Craven has developed an entire new reality to enchant us, and I'm anxiously awaiting the next book.
Our hero keeps fighting with his band of friends. This had a lot of twists and turns and I was kept on the edge of my seat with suspense and laughter. Absolutely wonderful series if you want action, adventure, and hilarious banter.
