I enjoyed this one. I’ve been curious about Grey Stryder since he appeared in the Montague & Strong books.

I liked him and it was nice to visit the Montague & Strong world from a different point of view.
Although I missed Peaches.

I’ll bite

I like Orlando Sanchez. He doesn’t try to turn his heroes into saints. The gritty personality of Grey, former Night Warden, hides his battle weary, past. Koda, Cole and Frank are Grey’s family, therefore, unknown entities. I think the author is stringing us along, giving us bits of enticing stories to lure us into his world. I’ll bite.

Solid start to what should be an interesting series. I am typically a one character group reader for any given author (RA Salvatore, only the Drizzt series, Jim Butcher only Dresden) so this is an exception for Sanchez. Since this series is essentially Montague & Strong adjacent it didn’t feel like that much of a departure.
This story definitely carries the same Sanchez vibe - subtle mortality plays, solid anti-hero in Grey Stryder & of course, a sardonic ‘pet’ but don’t let Frank hear the word pet!
Filled with action & setting up intrigue, I will certainly continue following Grey’s adventures & digging deeper into the rabbit hole looking for those Easter eggs!

I enjoyed every minute of this book. Although a new series that could potentially be read as a stand-alone novel, I would recommend that the book is read in conjunction with Mr Sanchez’ ‘Montague and Strong’Detective Agency’ series as it is set in the same magical world and in some places refers to occurrences in said series and includes some of our already well known and loved characters. It fits in really after the events of ‘Dirty Clouds, Silver Sky.’ Grey is an interesting new character, rather jaded and fed up with his lot in life. He is ‘encouraged’ (for want of better words) to take a new partner to help him in his battle against the baddies. Between her and a powerful weapon that he is tricked into accepting he is given a reason to fight a little harder to live. The book also has the best bar-tender you’d ever want to meet! Well paced story, plenty of action and an all round good fun read. Loved it!

I love fantasy/action, I love film noir with it's flawed and tough good guys, and I love the old detective novels like Mike Hammer that hold elements of get the job done, no matter the cost to yourself and keep your code of honor in tact as you do. Rarely, if ever, do I see a novel that can successfully merge those things into the perfect character, but Orlando Sanchez did just that in Grey.
Then you have deadly, but vulnerable Koda - trying to mask her desperate need for someone to believe in her, and teach her how to be more than a trained assassin in a world that would nullify her if they knew what she was.
I love that we slowly, but steadily, get to know the characters as we would in real life. I don't want a paper doll world where we know all there is from go.
This is the grittier side of the Montague and Strong world and I am brimming with anticipation for more. Great book, really great characters, give them a try!!!

Brilliant start to a great new series. I like the characters. They seem very believable to me. I mean--aside from the superpowers and supernaturals. The story is engaging. The action is steadily paced without being overwhelming. There are interesting people to get to know. One of his best works yet.

Action packed adventure

If you like non-stop action, magic, humor, and the occasional random god, then you really need to check out Wander. It's set in the universe of the Montague and Strong Detective Agency. It's not absolutely necessary to read the M & S books to thoroughly enjoy this one, but I'd recommend it, to fully understand all of the characters and all of the moving parts of the subplots that ripple through the story.

Grey Strider is a former Warden, sort of like a magical enforcer, who just can't let the darkness go, even though it's literally killing him. When Grey winds up in the hospital after saving the life of a normal, Hades comes to call and offers him a deal he tries really hard to refuse. Hades offers Grey the possibility to prolong his life and keep doing the job he loves, for a price. The first catch is that Grey has to accept a magical sword which will allow him to cast spells without killing himself. The second is that he has to partner with one of Hades' former assassins, a young woman named Koda. Grey doesn't want any part of either deal, but if he doesn't accept, Hades will remove Koda from the payroll, permanently. Once the reluctant team is assembled, Grey proceeds to continue investigating the influx of a new street drug, which turns its users into daylight impervious, out-of-control, vampires. The investigation winds up leading way closer to Grey's troubled past than he would like.
The action begins on page one and doesn't stop for a breath until the last page. Despite the fast pace, the characters develop well and we really get a feel for Grey and Koda and the challenges they face. Although they start out a bit rocky, they learn something about each other's strengths and weaknesses over the course of the story. By the end, there may even be a tentative respect and true partnership forming between them. I can't wait for the next installment to see where their adventures lead them next.

Okay. In for a penny, in for a pound.

Regardless of some of my strong issues with the Montague & Strong series (16 books plus various and assundry side novellas and shorts) I do love the world and love some of the characters. Not all, but most.

Grey Stryder's mention in the books, of course, piqued my interest. It's a bad habit of mine to not like main characters but love all the side characters so it's really no surprise to me when that happened here, too.

When I saw the author had continued the world through some of the periphery characters mentioned, I was, of course, delighted. The author has built a solid world, so the opportunity to stay in it thrilled me.

While M&S was huge boss level fights on a large scale, the Night Warden story, while still having very environment changing levels of baddies to fight, ended up being a little quieter of a novel. Sure there's explosions (courtesy of Tea and Crumpets from M&S) but Grey is a much quieter kind of guy and his world feels tighter, darker and more of a noir detective story that urban fantasy springs from.

I love the characters, even the main which is rare for me. I loved the cameos from the M&S stories which gives the world a larger feeling. This series shows a different side to the world building and I like it.

Looking forward to reading more in the whole universe created by the author but specifically this world of the Night Warden.

Excellent first book

Orlando Sanchez has again created an interesting story revolving around unique characters in this first book to his new series, Night Warden. It is set in the same fantasy New York City world as his fantastic Montague and Strong series but the main character in Wander, Grey Stryder, is older with a darker past and his partner/protégé, Koda, is young, naive and deadly.

There are an overabundance of urban fantasy books being self published by ambitious amature writers that are poorly written copies of popular works by professionally published authors. Orlando Sanchez is not one of them. His works are well written and his characters and his stories are unique.

If you appreciate well written, carefully edited reading material you’ll have it with Orlando Sanchez books. If you enjoy reading urban fantasy with lots of action, magic and monsters, you’ll enjoy Wander. If you like a darker bad/good guy character, you will connect with the Night Warden.

The story starts out with a man patrolling the streets when he saves a woman from an ogre. Now the woman's main concern is she still needs to get milk, even after being saved from said ogre, and a man crumpled against a wall telling her that he is not her hero. Next thing we find we would be a hero is now at Haven, and Rox is telling him not to cast again. This is how we meet one of the last of the Night Wardens. Who is soon asked by Hades to take on a sword and a girl that wield some nasty fans? Now find out the sword is a black blade out for his blood, so that they can bond, a talking lizard that prefers to be called a dragon, a little help from Monty, throw in some Redrum, ogres, and trolls and you have a great story.

This is the first in a new series, can't wait to read the next one.

This book is set in the world of Montague and Strong and takes us further into the preternatural world of NYC. We are introduced to Night Warden Grey and his crew. Readers of the Montague and Strong series will see familiar characters as the author weaves Grey's story into the fabric of Montague and Strong's world. While Grey's story is his own, the experience is richer if you are familiar with the author's other series. I absolutely love the works of Orlando Sanchez. He has quickly become one of my must-read authors. His characters are very well written and relatable. The attention to detail makes it easy to immerse yourself in his well-crafted world. I highly recommend this book as well as the author's other works.

GR average rating is accurate. This is a spin-off series, although it can be read separately I suggest you start with the 'Montague and Strong' series (at least the first two books AND then the short story 'The War Mage', because both book 2: 'Full Moon Howl' and "The War Mage" set up the background for this book (both in the events and characters presented). That's my suggestion anyway, others might have other ideas.

They are in the same city and the characters in both series interact with each other.

Other than that, main characters (Stryder and Koda) were likeable yet 'rough around the edges'. There is no hellhound in this book, there is a.. cough... 'lizard'. (If you want to find out more you'll have to read it for yourself).

This book confirms Mr Sanchez's recent shift in power. A great read with new and interesting characters (as well as some Montague and Strong favourites).

The plotting and characterisations get stronger book by book, if you enjoy urban fantasy, you will enjoy this.

Grey could become a favourite character and I am sure Koda will develop in future books. The only slight criticism is that the author does not seem to know what Koda is and she varies from powerful to less so and confident to even less so. This, however may be the point as Koda herself has no idea what she is and neither does anyone else - yet!

In short - recommended.

A Dark Addition To M&S World

I enjoyed Orlando Sanchez’s new, dark and gritty Night Warden series set in the Montague & Strong world. Very good protagonist—dark mage and ex-Night Warden Grey Stryder—who has a trainee named Koda who has her own unique weapons and “powers.” Stryder appears to believe that once a Night Warden, always a Night Warden, until death. Secondary characters are fun and different, and several characters from the M&S series appear. There are more supernatural creatures and magic practitioners in this book, including one with a staff of pain and correction.
If you like the M&S books, I think you’ll love this book.

What an amazing story! Orlando hits it out of the park with this new series!
He travels seamlessly between his series worlds with his characters and links his
series together beautifully. It was a pleasure to get to know the characters in Wander and begin to comprehend the pleasures, dangers and pain that drive them in their world.
While still written with Orlando's trademark sense of humor, this series promises to be darker than his more tongue-in-cheek Montague and Strong series.
Full of action, magic, imagination and plenty of snark. I loved it!

A great new urban fantasy series to go alongside Montague and Strong
This is the start of what is bound to be a great new urban fantasy series to go alongside the Montague and Strong Detective Novels although it could be read alone without losing coherence. This Night Warden has had a difficult history but still can't help himself from helping out even though it may not be in the way that others would. This book is full of action with a slightly warped sense of humour which explains exactly why I loved reading it and can't wait for more books to follow on.

A Deeper Dive into a Familiar World

Wander takes a darker and grittier look into the world that was introduced in the Montague and Strong series. Grey Strider is a badass, ruthless, anti-hero that hits the streets of NYC nightly to protect the forgotten from the terrors of the night. As more light is shed on the redrum problem plaguing the streets, some familiar faces come around to offer help, whether Strider wants it or not. I look forward to continuing the hard hitting, action packed, Dive into this side of the world I've come to know through M&S.

Wonderful, as always! It's good to see a different side to the stories I already love. Night Warden is darker, grittier, than Simon and Monty's stories, and as a result lacks some of the banter and levity. But that is not a bad thing. The Night Warden are the clean-up crew; as such they work in the shadows. Now don't get me wrong; there is humor! It's just more of a gallows humor. I also really enjoyed seeing Tristan without Simon. Seeing him through other eyes. Well done, and I can't wait for the next one!

Amazing anyone wanting atmosphere, humour and twists all Orlando's books are a must read.

Can I just say I have never enjoyed a series of books since reading Harry potter for the first time many moons ago. Orlando you are a true story weaver. Can't wait for more epic adventures from Montague ,peaches and strong, Gray ,Frank and koda. And peaches adventures with his pals more involvement with Frank as they are the bridge between the groups. I'm sad now as I have to wait for my next fix. Thank you again

I'm a fan of the Montague & Strong Case Files series. This story is about Grey Stryder, a former Night Warden who appears in some of the M&S stories. I can't say much without spoilers, but the story gives some background on Stryder, enough to let us know where he's at in his life when he appears in the M&S books. The story is engaging and I liked that we were treated to appearances by Hades, Tristan (without Simon and Peaches, how weird is that?), Roxanne, Aria, and Frank. We're introduced to a new character, Koda, and some of Grey's enemies. If you like your urban fantasy a bit darker, with wonderful characters and an exciting story, you'll enjoy this book!

Enjoyed entering into a different world

I usually read YA romances with happily-ever-after endings but from the first page this book had me hooked. With interesting characters and lots of action this book held my attention despite no romance. I rooted for the good guys the entire time.

If you want a world full of runes, dragons, fighting set in NYC, then this is the book for you.

A Great New Spin-Off Series From A Cunning Wordsmith!

I'm not very good at writing clever reviews. Especially after the rollercoaster ride I've just departed.
I really enjoy the new characters! Stryder and Koda are priceless, as is Frank and the rest of the crew. They do have their hands full protecting the rest of the world from things that go bump in the night - or roar deafeningly before they eat your face off.

Great first book in a new series

I loved this first book in the series. It was an explosive intro of new characters using humor, gritty action and plot. This series is a bit darker than its counterpart Montegue and Strong but no less compelling. Then there is Frank. You'll just have to read it to find out. So many fun places to go with these characters, can't wait for the next installment

This world is great

I’ve read all the books in The MOB series and loved them. Esp the last one. This view point is just as good but with a different flavor. The Easter eggs are wonderful! Having been a Harry Dresden fan (Thank You Jim Butcher!) from the beginning I am pleased to see the genre growing. And we all need a good laugh nowadays while the worlds are crazy, both the real one (?) and the imaginary ones.

Unique and Thrilling.

Not my usual genre, but I am ghlasd I read it. Very well written story line, extremely developed characters. Grey is a hero wh o believesd he is a monster for using dark magic. Yet it was done for right reason, so he still fights to keep others safe. His trainee Kodi has some secrets and I look forward to learning them. It was hard to out down and is definitely worth reading!

Fun read!

Orlando Sanchez has a gift for developing interesting characters, who are both strong but humanly flawed. You empathize with them as they struggle against both evil and the darker sides of their natures. This is true of his Montague and Strong series, the Sephia Blue series, and now he is off to a great start in this series. His writes strong stories that balance mystery, fantasy, and a nice amount of humor. These are great books.

Grey Stryder...

A magic user who now cannot use magic? There's gotta be a twist to this story!

I really enjoyed this beginning book about the Night Wardens as it shows a grittier side to this alternate dimension of the NYC, kind like our NYC but with magic and supernaturals in plain view! Oh, and they call in Monty from Montegue & Strong Detective Agency to partake in this battle! Awesome!

Expanding our world

Orlando Sanchez brings some memorable characters from his Montague and Strong series to life. An excellent first story in what I hope with be a long series. Both main characters are awesome, flawed, unique, and tough. They meet, and the adventure starts. Grey doesn’t want Koda around and Koda doesn’t trust Grey. But, they soon learn that they need each other for different reasons. A great start. Must read.

start of a great series

This new series is in the same world as his series about a certain "two-men-and-a-Hellhound" team, and there are some shared characters, but this one is a bit darker. This book is also about the reluctant team-up of an old cranky mage Night Warden who lives his Death Wish coffee (with extra Death) and a young "lockpick" who likes fans. (That sentence will make me by the time you've read several chapters!) Great reading!
