Hot diggety dog, the fur is flying in USA TODAY bestselling author Gretchen Archer’s latest. It’s not just good, it’s “Best in Show!” – Janet Evanovich Problem #1: Bootsy Howard Davis Way Cole lives a (relatively) quiet, (somewhat) simple, and (completely) witch-free life with her husband and twin daughters on the 29th floor of the Bellissimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. Until Bootsy Howard shows up demanding a million dollars. Problem #2: Princess Smucker What was marketing thinking when they booked the Southern Canine Association’s annual dog show at the Bellissimo? And what was Davis thinking when she agreed to let a dog stay with her? For a week? In her home? The home where she lives a (fairly) quiet, (reasonably) simple, and (totally) manicotti-free life? Problem #3: Leverette Urleen, MD The last thing Davis needs is an unsolicited house call from Pine Apple, Alabama’s latest excuse for a doctor. But since he’s there, considering she has a dead body on ice, she might as well have him determine the cause of death. Which he doesn’t. Nor is he any help finding the body when Davis loses it. On top of all that, he won’t leave, further disrupting Davis’s (more or less) quiet, (to a certain degree) simple, and (utterly) seersucker-free life. A life that’s about to go to the dogs. Unless Davis can learn a few new tricks. Fast. Guaranteed woofs, the best thing since the bone, take Double Dog Dare for a walk and you’re sure to unleash a treat. - - - - - - - - - - - - - DOUBLE DOG DARE by Gretchen Archer A Henery Press Mystery. If you like one, you’ll probably like them all.
This book was absolutely hilarious! When I read this book I just couldn't stop laughing! Even though this book was was later on in the series, you can read it as a standalone. The story line was great and the characters couldn't be more unique and hilarious. I read this novel in one sitting and all I could think about is that I wanted more! This was top of the line a comedic mystery and I can't wait for the opportunity to read the previous novels in the series. When you read books that are later in the series you usually feel like you're missing out on something but with this novel it was just as hilarious by itself. All the characters are wacky and out there in their own special way. I highly recommend this novel and series to anyone looking for a great laugh. If you love wacky and something that will make you laugh ass off look no further than Double Dog Dare!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Henery Press for allowing me to read a digital galley of this highly entertaining novel.
I will try not to be overly effusive in my reaction to this novel. That will probably be a battle I will lose. It was just so darn funny in places that I laughed hard enough to bring tears to my eyes. My funny bone was tickled and then some!
I've been following the madcap exploits of Davis Way Cole from the start of this series and I have enjoyed all seven of the books - some a little more than others, but this is an author who is sure to give me an entertaining read. This time Davis is expecting a visit from her sister Meredith and Meredith's best friend Vreeland who are visiting the Bellissimo casino in Biloxi, Mississippi because of the dog show competition. Vree shows up but her dog and Meredith don't. That's when Davis gets the ransom demand. Before it's all over with we have kidnapping, dognapping, a witch, Jesus Water, a blind sheik, cyber theft, crazy lottery winners, Bianca judging the dog show (if you read these books you know how that actually pans out!) and Bradley in Nashville for a conference. Just another normal week in the life of Davis Way Cole. And did I mention the twins are now twenty months old?
As I said before, this one had me in tears. My husband even came to check on me because I was laughing so hard. I'm not someone who likes my mystery novels to be humorous, but this author's writing style made a connection with me from the very first book and I've been hooked ever since. No - the situations aren't realistic, of course they aren't. But what they are is good escapism reading. The troubles Davis and her crew get into are the ultimate good versus evil situations and I just plain like these characters. Maybe it's because I'm Southern to the bone and so is Gretchen Archer. I have friends just like some of her characters. I often WAS one of her characters when I was younger and I still have a friend who is absolutely, exactly like Vree so I connect with these books. You can certainly begin reading right here with book number seven. Then you can get book number one and read them all because chances are you will want to do that very thing.
One of the things that makes me really looking forward to Gretchen Archers’ books is, that despite all that is happening, and all the laughs you get out of it, there is indeed a crime story. And by the end of the book(s), the crime is solved and the guilty parties get what they deserve. This time, it all revolves around a kidnapping, a very sick person, a murder or two and the disappearing of something very valuable. At the end, everything comes together nicely and we can, like Davis, go on with our lives. Not for long, I secretly hope Gretchen Archer will come up with a new adventure for Davis and her family/friends/enemies with the sometimes absolutely ridiculous names. I’m almost, but not quite, getting used to the strange habit of naming girls with boy’s names and the other way around, or giving family names as first names or giving someone no more than what looks like a string of carelessly chosen letters… but in this series it works better than in other books. I’m very happy to have received the ARC and I’m already looking forward to the next book in this series.
I don't know how she does it, Gretchen Archer's Davis Way series seem to get better with each book. This one had me in stitches. The descriptions of Princess, the dog with all his idiosyncracies, smells and tics was hilarious. I listened to the audio version of this book and the narrator does such a great job. The accents and voices she uses adds to the humour. The books uses every stereotype of the south and then magnifies it. They are similar to the Stephanie Plum books with those taking place in New Jersey with Italian stereotypes.
This story has the Bellisimo hosting a dog show, and slot tournament. Dogs are missing, dead bodies are showing up, Middle East Royalty is missing, lottery winners are running amok and Davis' sister is missing. Trying to solve all these problems without her husband Bradley, who is in Nashville, finding out as well as raising her two young twins is harder than she expects. Fantasy is back in this story with her sass and assistance. Several new characters from Davis' home town show up in this story and that is where the Southern Humor comes in. I did not put this one down as I laughed my way through it. You do not have to read this series in order, but it is such a great one, you might want to start at the beginning.
In Gretchen Archer's Double Dog Dare, the 7th installment in the Davis Way Crime Caper cozy mystery series, this caper will make you curl your toes and sent you on a wild goose chase. For Davis Way-Cole, she lives in a semi-charmed life as a mother of twin daughters, a loving husband, and works in the casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. But when her sister Meredith turns up missing, she receives a mysterious ransom for 50 million dollars from a local pastor. While her husband's in Nashville for business, she teams up with her best friend Fantasy and her sister's best friend Vreeland to look for clues. From there, things aren't that simple to pull off a heist while running a casino, as a blind oil sheik took residence in the casino and is looking for his missing eye dog. Then she has to the body double of Bianca Sanders, a local celebrity, as a judge for a dog show. Things get stranger, when she learns more clues behind the ransom and how it's connected to what's happening inside of the casino. In the end, after they pull it off without a hitch, they would have to get down and dirty to return the money.....
As usual, in #7 of the Davis Way Crime Spree series, we find a funny, and wild at time unbelievable, entertaining story. Opening her door expecting to see her sister, Meredith she found Vreeland Howard. All morning waiting for sister to show up. Meredith is a no-show. However, Bootsy Howard appears and tell her that in order to see her sister and Vree's dog she must pay a million dollars, Pastor Gully. At this point, the tale takes so many turns you are flipping the pages as fast you can. Davis has no way of dining a million dollars and her efforts to find the money without stealing it from the conduct will amuse you. Yes, the twins and dogs are in attendance, Bradley is not. Did Davis succeed? Read the book to find out why and how. I highly recommend this book and series.
Disclosure: Many thanks to Henery Press for a copy of this book for review. The opinions expressed are my own.
Another hilarious look into the life of Davis Way. I sure wish she really existed, because I would love to have a friend like her! I laughed my way through this book, crying at some parts, from laughing too hard. When Princess enters the picture, I didn't know how to handle that one. LOL. You will have to read the book to see what I am talking about. And I have to mention Bex and Quinn!!! Oh my goodness, they are so cute, and talking, which is the cutest thing ever. :) I anxiously await the next book!!
Gretchen Archer guarantees to take her readers on another wild ride with Davis Way Cole and her sidekicks. Living in the Bellissimo, a casino located in Biloxi, Mississippi; married to the Casino President, Bradley Cole; raising twin twenty-month-old baby girls, Bexley and Quinn; body double for Bianca Sanders, the wife of the owner of the Bellissimo; also, a member of an elite internal security team at the Bellissimo, Davis was already on overload. Looking forward to a weekend with her sister, Meredith and her friend, Vreeland, Davis is surprised when Vreeland arrives but no Meredith. Shortly after Vreeland arrived, Davis is notified by security that she has another visitor on the way up. Again, it isn’t Meredith but Vreeland’s husband’s aunt, Bootsy Howard, who is believed to be a witch. Bootsy provides Davis with information that Davis needs to come up with $1,000,000.00 dollar for the return of her sister, Meredith and Vreeland’s pup, Bubbles. Meredith is being held by Pine Apple’s local minister, Rev. Gully. He is demanding the money to help his brother get the treatment for a rare illness. Bootsy has warned Davis that she isn’t to say anything to anyone. Davis is fit to be tied between trying to care for her twin daughters, replace Bianca Sanders as a judge in the dog show being held at the casino, figure out how to raise $1,000,000.00 so her sister will be released and still stay on the right side of the law. You will find a real adventure between the covers of this book and each character’s personality will delight your funny bone. Having not read any of the previous six books, I was able to read this one and know who each character was and the general background of the book.
Double Dog Dare by Gretchen Archer is the 7th book in the Davis Way Crime Caper, and another great addition. I love these cozy mystery books, they are laugh out loud funny with a lot of twists and turns that keeps you reading. Davis Way Cole and her husband Bradley Cole, work and live in the Bellissimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi with their twin daughters. Davis prepares for a nice visit with her sister while Bradley is out of town, instead her sister gets kidnapped, along with a show dog. Great Book! The development of the story and characters are so well written. The story is also hilarious, yet intense at times. I strongly recommend this book/series for readers who love funny cozy mysteries. I look forward to the next book in the series.
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is the seventh book in the Davis Way Crime Caper series. 4.5 stars
This one was pretty much over the top in all ways. Davis is forced to steal a million dollars to get her sister back from a preacher who was trying to save his brother who had an illness that would take a special treatment to heal him. Davis is a woman who work for a casino and the preacher thought since she was near all that money, why not give him a mil and he's give her sister back to him.
This was almost like a slapstick comedy with a dog show in the midst of it with a blind shiek, crazy dogs that loved Madeline Albright and a scheme to steal money from 400 ATM machines all over the country. I have to admit this was one of my favorite stories so far. Loved all the zany antics.
OMG! Can I give this 20 Stars? Please???? This book was one crazzzzzzzy thrilling roller coaster ride. Poor Davis - the easiest part of her current life is dealing with her toddler twin daughters. Her husband is out of town & she not only has her boss’ wife Bianca bugging her, she has to deal with an “alien looking” dog, a dead body, a “witch”, several kidnappings, oh, & the small issue of coming up with one million dollars! Davis, coworker & friend Fantasy, & her sister’s bff nonstop talker Vree, band together to fight this insanity. I laughed till my sides hurt! Gretchen Archer’s books are so addictive!
Life is just better with Davis in it! Seriously, the seventh book in the Davis Way Crime Caper, is just as good as the first.
Davis is feisty and always lands in unique situations. In this caper, Davis finds herself dealing with a kidnapped sister, an unusual dog, Vree, a woman people think is a witch, a diamond dog collar, a dog show, and a dead body. Davis and Fantasy scramble to find innovative solutions to solve the crime and make their Bellissimo world right again without No Hair and Bradley finding out. Did I mention Bradley, her husband, is out of town? Urleen, a questionable doctor, from Pine Apple, Alabama, contributed to the laughter and chaos! Poor Davis!
You won't be able to put the book down. I'm looking forward to Davis Way #8!
Yes!!!! Davis Way is back! I've missed her. While the last installment of Davis' life left me craving Waffle House waffles, this one had my sides splitting from all the laughing out loud that I did while reading this book. (Okay, maybe not splitting, but I did laugh more in this book than I have the others. And, there was no shortage of laughs in the others.)
I just love this series. It's WAY better than the Stephanie Plum books. (Twenty books down the road and the girl can't decide on Ranger or Joe? SMH.) Plus, Davis is married and has other things on her mind.
The cast of characters, with the exception of the regulars who work at the casino, keep changing as to who from Pine Apple, Alabama is visiting her this time. That city is sure full of wackos.
I guarantee once you read one of these books, you will want to read them all. The capers and the situations that Davis finds herself in are hilarious.
Thanks to Henery Press and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
Davis Way Cole is waiting for her sister Meredith's visit. Meredith and her best friend Vreeland Howard are coming for a dog show that's been booked at the Bellissimo, where Davis works as a super secret spy/security expert. But when she answers her door, it's not Meredith but Vree, and she explains that Meredith and Bubbles - Vree's dog, who is going to be entered in the show - are arriving a little later.
But Meredith doesn't arrive. Neither does the dog. Instead, Vree's sort-of mother-in-law Bootsy shows up. Bootsy is mean enough to be a witch, and people have accused her of such. Bootsy is also there because Meredith isn't coming unless Davis gives her one million dollars. Davis, of course, doesn't have a million dollars, but if she doesn't get it, then Pastor Gully (who apparently has kidnapped both Meredith and Bubbles) threatens to leave them on a street corner in Guadalajara, Mexico.
But the troubles don't end there - Davis's boss 'No Hair' shows up at her door with what appears to be some kind of snarling dog and tells her to take care of it. The owners - lottery winners who are also hicks - have checked in and are spending money and creating havoc. When the dog decides to 'leak' on Davis's floor, she calls housekeeping, and they send up two burly men to clean up who look more like they should be in security detail.
So Davis calls her best friend Fantasy to come help get Bootsy out of her home, and into Fantasy's bonus room above her garage. Which isn't easy - and then still has to decide how to rescue her sister and find out who the dog belongs to; not to mention the 'schmucks' who are running amok in the casino causing problems.
At least Bradley is out of town on business, so she has one less thing to worry about; but just when things can't get any worse, they do. Suddenly there's a dead body, a doctor who doesn't know what he's doing, and now she has two dogs to contend with. Will Davis be able to save her sister and her marriage before Bradley returns? Can Davis and Fantasy keep No Hair from finding out what they're doing? And how will she find a million dollars without robbing the Bellisimo in time to save her sister?
Yes, it's just another day in the world of Davis Way Cole, Super Spy and security expert for the Bellissimo. And I can't say too much about this book without giving too much away. But I will say that the characters are indeed fun to be around. Sometimes I feel sorry for Fantasy, but then again, she walks right into it, so it's really hard to do so.
But Davis has her hands full with twin daughters and a near-hysterical woman from small-town Pine Apple where she grew up, who faints at anything and everything; and a physician (?) who's lascivious to the max and doesn't know a wart from a mole (or cares). But we have a case of a missing body, missing people, missing cars, a missing sister and missing dogs - I don't think I'm missing anything here (but I could be).
At any rate, this book is both suspense and hilarious, if it can be such, at the same time. Davis is one smart cookie, and she needs to be to deal with these looney tunes - which includes her boss Bianca, who expects Davis to impersonate her wearing the most ridiculous outfits yet. But then again, we've all known Bianca isn't all there anyway...
In the end, this book is definitely on my list of one of the best this year. Ms. Archer's writing is impressive, the characters are well-defined and full of life, and the plot highly believable. When we come to the end and it is all sorted out, I was sorry it ended so soon. A book I will reread more than once. Highly recommended.

Davis Way Cole has gotten stuck. Not permanently stuck, mind you, but stuck in the house, stuck with the kids, stuck in that life of children and housewifery that is a not-so-rare thing for working women. But the time has come for her to move out of the house and get back to work.
There's her family, of course and whenever they pop into her life, it just gets crazy. And there's the Bellissimo casino. It has come a long way back from its near demise, but it has a way to go and it's time for Davis to get back on board and help.
Of the many things no casino is supposed to present to the public, a dog show is probably high on the list. Especially this dog show where the pooches are not being judged for their breed characteristics or even their abilities in obedience or agility. They are being judged for their unique abilities ... to do ... well ... dance. Sing. Sort of human things that dogs are not supposed to do. It's a wild and crazy competition and Davis' boss is supposed to judge it.
You know what that means. That's right. Davis is the stand in ... and Davis' sisters' best friend has an entry for the show. Or is supposed to but ...
As it typical of all of Gretchen Archer's hilarious yet incredibly complex novels, the dog show, the dogs, the people, the absolutely everything that could possibly go wrong or off the rails, does.
One of the truly delicious aspects of Ms. Archer's writing is her ability to take a wildly complicated story, tie up all the ends, and come out in the end with all the hanging parts of the story neatly tied up in a proper bow. This one is no different and if it wouldn't give away to much, I'd tell you more.
Davis Way is growing up. Her world is still crazy. Her boss is definitely crazy and her family is deliciously wacko ... but she's growing up. She's smart. She may not always make the perfect decision, but she doesn't make her decisions casually or without serious thought. She cares about people she is close to ... but she also simply cares about all the people who ramble through her life. So the books aren't just funny. They are also warm and frequently, touching.
Suffice to know that this is one intelligent, funny, thoughtful, weird, complicated book where everything is happening at the same time and it looks like it's all different things. Yet, somehow, most of it comes together and all of it gets sorted out. This is a life and death tale that will leave you laughing, crying, and hugging your dog. I gave all three of mine at two extra biscuits. They didn't say thank you. Spoiled maybe?
Here at Hidden Staircase I enjoy all kinds of mysteries, especially a good cozy series. A few years ago I discovered Gretchen Archer’s Davis Way series, which quickly became a favorite.
I know when I pick up a book in the Davis Way series I’m sure to forget my troubles for a while (Davis will have plenty), and I can settle in for a fun, laugh-out-loud adventure. Double Dog Dare (book seven) did not let me down.
Davis has given up her hectic super-spy schedule and now works part-time Bellissimo Casino security from the comfort of home (on the 29th floor of the casino) in order to spend more time with her twin girls. We find Davis eager to spend the week with special visitors coming in for the Bellissimo’s dog show: her sister Meredith, Meredith’s best friend Vree, and Vree’s dog Bubblegum.
But Meredith and Bubblegum don’t arrive at the Bellissimo. Instead, Davis and Vree are greeted by Bootsy Howard, who gives Davis one week to come up with one million dollars in exchange for her sister. And Bubblegum.
Honestly this book is a roller coaster ride from here. Kidnapping, murder, possible witchcraft, a missing body, and more dogs than Davis knows what to do with. Not to mention, she still needs to keep up with her security duties that her boss No Hair assigns, and fill in for Bianca as a judge in the dog show. She’s got her hands full. Luckily, her husband Bradley is out of town (he would want to bring in the proper authorities), and her best friend Fantasy is around to help Davis get to the bottom of things.
My favorite part of these books is always Ms. Archer’s writing style. She writes in the first person, and Davis’ view (and her asides) are always just so darn funny. I did miss some of the characters we’ve met in previous outings, but the new characters introduced keep the series fresh and fun. The story took unexpected turns and Double Dog Dare kept me laughing out loud and frantically turning pages to see what was going to happen next.
While I do recommend reading previous books in this series just because they are so darn funny, new readers can feel free to start here and not be lost. Double Dog Dare is fast paced, with plenty of surprises thrown in. And, as always, everything manages to tie together for a satisfying ending.
always look forward to a new Davis Way crime caper. I’ve been following the series for a while (have to go back and find the time to read the first couple of books that I missed.) It is one of my favorite series as the plots are hilarious and the characters sometimes bring tears to my eyes from laughing so hard.
Davis Way Cole is responsible (part time now that she has the kids) for security at the Bellissimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. She lives there with her husband (manager of the Casino) and their young twin daughters, taking up half of the 29th floor of the hotel. A continuing theme in the books is that Davis is a dead ringer for the casino owners wife, a pampered lady who prefers to have Davis double for her at local events and has, for some reason, decided that Davis’ name is actually David.
In this story, Davis’ past in Pine Apple, Alabama, has made its way into the casino (once again.) Davis is asked to pay a ransom of a million dollars (just go take it from the casino, right?) In her search for the kidnappers, she runs into a cast of characters from Pine Apple – Bootsy Howard (a known witch – just ask any child in Pine Apple), Leverette Urleen, MD – a doctor that I would just say no to, and my favorite, Vreeland Howard (Davis’ sister’s best friend.)
Vree talks a mile a minute. She one of those people who seem to have perfected the ability to talk while inhaling as well as exhaling.
I laughed my way through the book. The mystery wasn’t too difficult to figure out but the plot did make sense. For me, reading this series isn’t about figuring out the whodunnit. It’s all about enjoying the ride.
The book can be read standalone but I recommend reading the series in order. While I enjoy the books I have read, I think I am lacking some background because I missed the first two. I purchased them so it is simply a matter of finding the time to read them.
I was provided a digital advance reader copy of this book by the publisher via Netgalley.
I am so happy that Netgalley and Henery Press have given me the opportunity to read this one. I received this electronic ARC from Netgalley.. Thank-you for the opportunity to read and review.
I hadn’t read any of this series before this one which is number seven. It can be read as a standalone.
This is an over the top book that made me laugh out loud often. I remember thinking this is a keystone cops story with women. I had the hardest time believing that people could be so inept with life and knowledge. Sadly, we all have met people like the ones portrayed in this book. I would not want to be near Bianca even though she did add that over the top socialite sense to the story.
So our story involves Davis, who is well educated and a trained security specialist married to a casino president, Brad Cole. They have twin 20 months old daughters. They live in a casino apartment (1/2 the floor) because of their jobs.
Davis is already overwhelmed with the job, the kids and steeping in for Bianca, the owner’s wife at social functions. Now her sister, Meredith and the sister’s BFF, Vreeland Howard, are due to visit for a week while Brad is shopping for a new job is Nashville.
Meredith doesn’t show but Vree does and the chaos ensues. Bootsy Howard, the woman that raised Vree’s husband shows up immediately after Davis reads an e-mail stating Meredith and Vree’s dog have been kidnapped. Bootsy is there to ensure no one else finds out about the kidnapping and return to the kidnappers with the money.
The rest you will have to read. It just gets wilder and wilder. In the end, the thieves (I haven’t told you about the thieves) and the kidnappers get what’s coming to them. It works out well and I enjoyed the last few chapters immensely.
I plan to read the other six books which I won very soon to catch up. This story stands on its own and is not predicated on the previous books.
I was surprised to see that Double Dog Dare, a cozy mystery, is also classified by the publisher as humor…until I read it. It is hilarious; all the way through from one complication to another. The storyline starts out simply enough as Davis Way, who is part of the security team at a Biloxi, Mississippi, casino anticipates the arrival of her sister Meredith and Meredith’s friend Vree, a nonstop, stream of consciousness talker with her dog who will be competing in a canine competition at the casino.
From the moment Davis opens the door to the early arriving Vree instead of Meredith, absolutely nothing goes as planned. Author Gretchen Archer creates fun characters and really amusing dialogue. The plot is intricate and when you are not laughing, you will be saying “What???” over the latest development. There are a variety of crimes including kidnappings, impersonations, and thefts. Meredith has a moral dilemma and in trying to help her, Davis also explores ethical and legal boundaries.
While all of these complications are occurring, Davis has to role play the wife of the casino’s owner, care for her twin 20-month old daughters, manage several dogs, and not tell her husband what is going on at home while he is attending a conference in Nashville.
If you want a nonstop mystery that will keep you smiling, laughing, and shaking your head, you’ll want to grab Double Dog Dare. It is now available in Kindle format.
I would like to extend my thanks to netgalley.com and to Henery Press for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Right out of the gate the stage is set to keep you hooked through to the end...the Davis Way series has been addicting from its debut. There's one thing, among many more, you can expect from Ms Archer, the complete and utterly unexpected...not to mention hilarity abounds. Her writing is a fresh voice in a sea of monotony from other authors.
In this latest installment of a Davis Way escapade the hilarity involves characters of the canine kind, (the imagination that created a creature with such disjointed ugliness of Princess, yet make her lovable in her own way, is genius) among a whole host of human characters of the zany and unsavory variety. Witnessing the workings of Davis' inner monologue gives you the prompt to turn the pages rapidly to discover where the quirky that surrounds her is headed...with a casino as a backdrop, there is no telling who may emerge from the ethers.
The addition of Davis's long awaited twin daughters have added another element of freshness, and who leave you chuckling at what can only be described as little Davises in waiting. Toss in her husband Bradley who never ceases to astound at his total acceptance of the wacky that surrounds Davis, most often unbeknownst to him, and you have the straight man to her wackiness.
The only disappointment that I ever experience when reading the latest Davis Way story is the end...waiting for the next story is not for the impatient...it can never come soon enough.

Double Dog Dare is a comedy caper with all female leads. Set in a high-rise casino in Biloxi Mississippi, the complications keep coming throughout. First, Davis’ sister Meredith and her best friend’s dog are kidnapped by her hometown preacher. Then the best friend’s mother-in-law comes to make sure that the one million dollar ransom is paid. She might also be a witch. How will Davis and Vree find a million dollars? It helps that Davis in part of a four-person security team in the casino and also a computer expert. Oh and she is also a mother of infant twin girls and has a husband who is luckily out of town. This is literally less than 10% of the hilarious plot. It just goes downhill for Davis, but uphill for comedy caper fans, from there.
Double Dog Dare is the 7th book in the Davis Way Crime Caper series. I haven’t read any of the previous books and had no trouble following the plot and characters in this one.
I chose this book on NetGalley because of the quote “It’s ‘Best in Show’” by Janet Evanovich, whose Stephanie Plum series I love. This book gave Stephanie a run for best comedy caper series (though Ms. Archer should add a Lula-esque character to this series too). Overall, this zany book is highly recommended. 4 stars!
Thanks to the publisher, Henery Press, and NetGalley for an advanced copy.
Davis Way Cole is back and better than ever in DOUBLE DOG DARE (A Davis Way Crime Caper Book 7)! Davis is busier than ever with her twenty-month old twins, husband Bradley, returning to work on the Security Staff at the Bellissimo Resort and Casino in Biloxi, MS and of course, being the body double for Bianca Sanders.
Archer continues to entertain her readers with the liveliest tales (tails?) of life in Davis’ spacious living area on the 29th floor of the Bellissimo as well as throughout the rest of the Casino and surrounding areas. Our favorite Davis Way characters are back along with special guests - Vree (Davis’ sister’s BFF), Bootsy Howard (a possible witch), Princess Smucker (Pampered Canine - oh what a looker she is!) and Leverette Urleen, MD (how did he get that medical license?) When you add the Southern Canine Association’s annual dog show into the mix can you imagine the mischief that can occur?
The masterful blending of hilarious character descriptions and the most creative storylines on the way to crime solving always make Archer’s books Prime Reading!
I was provided an ARC by Henery Press and NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own and without influence.
A brilliant, touching story about human interaction and what's really important in spite of the odds. Also a hilarious caper that had me absolutely rolling. Tears, the whole nine yards. I stopped and read chapter 7 TWICE before going on, as a matter of fact. Too funny not to enjoy it twice. A story about a Princess that is DEFINITELY not a fairy tale, but one of the BEST books I've read in AGES. A tale that turns hopeless into hope and hilarity. (What's with the CAPITAL LETTERS?) I am so in love with this book that it's taken me forever to write this review. I'd go on and on if I thought anyone would read it. But I do hope anyone who has read this far will give themselves a tremendous treat by picking up Double Whammy and reading the WHOLE (stop with the cap letters) series. In order. It has been an absolute joy to meet Davis Way and watch her evolve throughout seven books, laughing and crying all the way. (Me laughing and crying, not Davis. Okay, maybe her, too, but I meant me.) One of the absolute best series on the market today, so says this serial reader, and, no joke, it just keeps getting better. #andtherearedogs #sofunny #diedalittle
I wait with baited breath every year for the new Davis Way installment. I carefully avoid all teasers and sneak peeks so that I enjoy a full surprise experience. I quietly go to my Amazon account and pre-order the book, making sure not to study the shiny new cover or glimpse at the synopsis for too long. It was difficult this year because I finally joined Gretchen Archer's fb group. Dang it! Sooooo many sneak peeks!
Davis never dissapoints! Neither do the people of Pine Apple, Alabama. Loved this installment and devoured it in two days even though I promised myself I would drag it out. If I wasn't busy stuffing easter eggs I probably wouldn't have put it down. Curse you Easter Bunny!
If you have been under a rock and somehow missed this series, no judging, just go back to book #1 and start from the beginning. They get better and better and the laughs never stop.
I received a free, advance copy of this book and this is my unbiased and voluntary review,
Davis Way Cole tries to lead a normal life with her twin daughters and husband living above a casino in Missouri but trouble tends to follow her. What was supposed to be a semi tranquil visit from her sister and a friend during the casino dog show turned into kidnapping, ransom and a trail of dead bodies.
Thing s go awry as her sister and her friend’s dog gets kidnapped and the people want a million dollars. She must find away to pay the ransom billion dollars. She must find a way to pay the ransom before her husband returns from his business trip.
A fun and humorous read with lots of action and awkward situations. The characters are engaging and hilarious.
The casino is hosting a dog show and Davis's sister and best friend are supposed to visit while Vree is entering her dog.
What I enjoyed: * Crazy things happen around Davis. This time we have her dog sitting Princess who listens to Madeline Albright and eats manicotti. Her sister has been kidnapped by the local preacher while the local witch is his lookout and her sister's BFF is driving her crazy with the constant talking all while Bradley is at a convention in Nashville and thinking about moving them there permanently. * There was a nice wrap up as people got what they deserved * The twins were adorable and Fantasy was great as always, I did miss their sidekick though
What could have been better: * Davis was a lot slower to catch on to things than normal
