Harry Makepeace is an electrical engineer that lives in the smoggy streets on Manchester with a child Cathie who suffers badly with asthma, after the last time of being rushed to hospital Harry needs to move out of the city if he wants his daughter to get better.
Harry finds a lovely village on the moors where there is land available for sale would this be better for Cathie???
With Harry trying to organise moving to the village, Harry is over whelmed by the help he is offered in his and daughters new life.
This is a lovely feel good factor story of small village life with everyone going through different hardships but pulling together when needed. Lovely paced story with an interesting plethora of characters.

I have read a lot of Anna Jacobs books and the other two in this series all of which I have enjoyed but this one although nice was a bit boring for me. I found the characters lacked depth, the plot a bit predictable and the relationships just happened a bit too fast for me.
Another lovely book of the people in Ellindale,Harry Makepeace decides to move to the small village on the moors to aid his daughter cathies asthma.Living in Manchester is too dangerous to her health after a violent asthma attack. The people of the village as always are so eager to work and few offer to help harry with his move and to install his new home on the land he has bought.Only there are forces out to cause trouble but the villagers rally round to make sure all goes well and after a bumpy start all goes well.I can highly recommend this book well worth 5*
The third book in the Ellindale saga . This is a gripping read , as usual with Anna Jacobs . It is full of interesting characters , mostly nice folk , but with the odd baddie now and again . Harry Makepeace has moved from Manchester with his daughter Cathie , who needs fresh country air to help her asthma . They settle in the friendly village of Ellindale where they soon make friends and become part of the community. Life is good but Harry has made an enemy and life is suddenly much less rosy !
Anna is a amazing author the village of Ellindale a really lovely place to live in such desperate times i felt sad for a lot of the people who were struggling to feed their families and would do anything just to earn a penny or tuppence to feed just the children and felt uplifted to read how helpful they all were it's a a shame how standards have dropped in todays.I've read quite a few of Anna Jacobs saga books and loved every one can't wait to read no4 in this one.thank you Anna.
Lovely story my muscles ached pulling the carriage up the hill what a shame we have lost the way we should help each other as they did in this lovely story.am now going to read the final instalment of this village and its special people. I have read lots of Anna's books my very favourite's are the Trader books oh I loved them must start now on the last Ellindale tale can't wait.

A lovely read. Harry is widowed and has been left to bring up his only child, Cathie. They have a close bond. Unfortunately Cathie does suffer from asthma and after a bad attack a doctor advices that Cathie`s health would improve if they could move away from industrial Manchester. This is not easy when finances are very tight. However they do manage to find a friendly village in Lancashire and move there with the help of many friendly villagers, with some romance and a few adventures along the way.
The book was interesting at the beginning describing struggles of a man who enjoyed looking after his daughter after his wife died , but with her struggling with asthma and a difficult boss who was mean as well, he was desperate to move away from Smokey Manchester to cleaner air but jobs were scarce so he worried how he could do this.
The book carried on with the move but it took the whole of the book before this was complete and the struggles they had , I thought the book was slow reading, mildly interesting. At least J finished it and didn’t give up on it.
This series is just one of those nice ones which help to put a smile on your face. I love reading these. They are set post WWI in a small village in Lancashire UK. They have realistic characters, both strong and weak, struggling along in life finding money or food where they can, but at the same time realising the real meaning of kindness to others.
I have enjoyed every page of book number three. I'm such book number four will be as good. Anna is a fabulous story teller and her characters come to life. I've laughed, cried and say on the edge of my seat reading all of these books. Roll on number four. Thank you Anna xx
A nice read in the Ellindale saga but despite finding the characters engaging from Harry Makepeace and his asthmatic daughter Cathie I found it a bit predictable and at times boring. I found Harry's romance a bit hurried and lacking in passion. I still love the other characters and the village life.
A lovely heartwarming uplifting book about family loyalty, love, friendship and true spirit. The characterisation was very good and really made the story come alive. Compassion and human kindness within hard times was a subject deeply explored. A easy to read story to escape in to. My thanks go to Netgalley, the publisher and author for providing this arc in return for a honest review.
Anna Jacobs has become one of my favorite writers. I enjoyed her series on the Gibson family tremendously, but I love this wonderful series even more. I feel like I am back in the early 30's and have a better understanding of how truly desperate the situation was for so many. The characters are lovely and I am going to miss them very much! Thank you, Anna!
This is the third book in the series and was really good. The author brought together all the characters from the previous two books along with a couple of new ones. It’s about a real sense of community spirit. Even though people have no money and not enough to eat, they band together to help when they can. Maybe that’s what people do when faced with a crisis! A very enjoyable read.
This is the third book in Anna Jacobs story and I must say I can’t wait to start book four to see how all the lives of the villagers come to a conclusion. Although Harry and Cathie were the main characters in this book, it was lovely to continue Leah s journey as well. Excellent book.
Sweet story of a father and daughter struggling to survive in an industrial town move out to the country for the daughter's health, the story of their transition is one of a small village mentality rarely seen nowadays, of helping each other to settle and become part of the community, giving a sense of belonging and connectedness. Lovely story.
I bought this at our local charity shop, simply because I love Anna Jacob’s novels. This turns out to be the third book in a saga, but can be read in isolation.I loved all the characters, and the way the village pulled together to support the newcomer. Although I thought various love interests ended rather predictably…I loved the book.
3.5 ★ Although the prose is a little rough in some spots, this series saga continues to be entertaining. The author introduces new people into the village while including those who we already know their stories from the previous books. Would make excellent PBS Masterpiece series. On to Book #4.
The third saga. Just as amazing as the first two. Though saddened by a death. I couldn’t help but mourn the loss of a main character. I felt Leah’s moving on too sudden for me but I will get over it I’m sure.
Now on to book four. I need more. I never want it to end.
Another great book in this fantastic series. Really enjoyed all the books and can't wait for the next one in march. I have read all three books one after the other. This is a very good series of books and I would highly recommend it.
Another five star read in the wonderful series of Ellindale. As usual Anna Jacobs has you hooked on the story. I would definitely recommend this series. Another thing is that you just cannot go wrong with an Anna Jacobs book.
This was book 3 and I am still impressed with this series. She pulled everyone into this book as well from the last two books and also made new characters and new plots. I will read the last book now and then will see if the Series held me to the last book.
I really enjoyed the book. I love books set around village life and family life. When I bought book, I didn't realise it was book 3 in a series but I don't think I missed out on anything. I've bought the rest of the series now on kindle.
