All Cara Parker wants is to be swept off her feet... But the way her life is going, that’s not happening anytime soon. She’s got a humdrum office job and a self-centered boyfriend, but those things are stable and safe. Her comfortable routine is worth more than silly fantasies of travel and romance, isn’t it? All that changes with the arrival of Ellery Chandler, a silver-haired corporate superstar and "most eligible lesbian in the business world." Cara’s encounter with this powerful, captivating woman starts off a series of events that challenge everything Cara thought she knew about herself, her life...and her desires. In the midst of all this, gifts from a secret admirer start showing up on Cara’s desk. Will giving into her feelings set her free, or will it destroy everything she’s worked for? Because getting closer to Ellery Chandler comes with risks of its own. This wife-and-wife team of best-selling author Marian Snowe and humor writer Ruby Grandin brings you a slow-burn lesbian romance full of heart, laughs, and second chances.

A crush.

I really need to say this - Covers are important! I don't know why this cover was chosen, I know these two people are meant to represent the characters but it looks terrible. And I never would have read this if it wasn't for an Instagram friend who put this KU book on my radar because she knows workplace romances are my jam. She's right on point with my reading preferences because I really love a lighthearted workplace romance with a power lesbian which is what this book is all about.

The story revolves around Cara, who has pretty much settled for less. She's a general administrative assistant, a job that pays the bills and she's in a relationship with a poor excuse of a boyfriend. A good 30% of the story is dedicated to character development as Cara comes to a realisation that she isn't happy with her life after crossing paths with the new consultant in office. She starts making positive changes to her life and also starts to question her sexual orientation. I have to say that I really enjoyed this part of the story.

The consultant, Ellery, is Cara's love interest and office crush, and after some point, it becomes clear that Ellery is crushing back. However, I thought the romance was underdeveloped and needed a bit more work. Their interactions were either too brief or too superfical to form any kind of meaningful relationship and Ellery was too elusive until too late. I also had some trouble liking the dynamics of their relationship which, I don't know how else to put it other than it feels like Ellery is one of the Kardashians and Cara is her arm candy.

All in all, it's actually not a bad book, but I wish their relationship had been deeper.

Detailed score: 3.0

There are the bones of an inoffensive, fluffy instalove/meet cute story in here but as it is, it misses the mark.

One of my main bug bears was the excessive descriptions that served no plot purpose: every location, outfit and action was described to the enth, eye-glazing degree. I was skimming but the end to try and locate the plot in amongst all the wordiness. It really bought me out of the story.

My other bug bear with this one is a little more a matter of personal taste: our main lead and sole lens, Cara drove me nuts as a character. She seemed so damsel in distress ish, and very immature. Hard to get into a romance if you don’t find your lead appealing.

Finally, I just found this a bit (a lot) shallow and immature. The character’s thought processes, causes of angst and even speech patterns seemed more teen (and immature teen at that) than adult. Likewise the plot. I like a bit of fluff as much as the next person but this was just a bit too light on.

Despite all the above, this book definitely has some charm - particularly if you’re a sucker for ‘falling for the boss’ type romances like I am.

Overall: if you’re not on Kindle Unlimited, the save your money for something else — but for those of us on KU this isn’t bad for a lightweight, commute read.

Why is this rated so highly? I was determined to finish this story as it is quite simple and easily read in snippets on breaks but the main character.... the main character is supposed to be 35 and her thoughts (all we read) are so utterly vapid one is left with the feeling she is being pursued by this urbane sophisticate based entirely on her looks alone.

She becomes a lesbian with relative ease after her boyfriend reveals himself to be mentally eight years old. Apparently, he just stopped growing as she did herself. She breaks it off with him and soon is attracted to women without any fuss. If the urbane sophisticate boss who is had been male he would have read like a predator.

An excellent storyline!

Cara struggles with her predictable, boring life. No exciting things, no highlights and her dreams have remained dreams. In contrast to the women who cross her path. They are succesful, gorgeous, confident and know what they want. Cara doesn’t stand a chance against such women. Or so she thinks. When sparks fly and everything is going in the right direction, secrets of the past are beginning to reveal. Are they able to overcome the obstacles in their paths? This is a sweet romantic plot with a twist of mystery. Great characters and well written with a nice pace. I’m more than happy to recommend this excellent book. That this is written by Marian Snowe and her wife, makes it special. I hope that they will write together more often.

Solid 3 Stars - Kindle Unlimited

An ok workplace romance. I love the falling for a the boss and a good rich girl/poor girl. I think my main issue that knocked this down to a 3-star is the couple really doesn't spend that much time together. A good portion of the book is the "secret admirer' stage that really was only a few gifts (I was expecting some more interesting/elaborate) and is a lot about Cara figuring out that she is not satisfied with her bf or her life and making a change.

When Ellery and Cara start dating they are not together very often. Ellery is always flying off somewhere and for me I really missed more interaction between the two.

It's KU so you can't really go wrong. Both the MC are nice people, and it was not hard to read about them and the writing very readable. If the premise sounds interesting to you, then give a few chapters and see what you think. I do not feel like I wasted my time, but I probably would not re-read this one.

Sweet Cara and Stunning Ellery, a Perfect Couple
Cara is an administrator in a busy company. Her boyfriend is about as useless and self-centered as they come and she has lost herself somewhere along the way. Ellery, a corporate heavy hitter, is a silver haired goddess that makes Cara’s heart beat faster and makes her rethink the whole being attracted to men thinking and makes her long for things she never knew she wanted…. Now there is someone leaving her secret presents and life just got a whole lot more interesting!

I cannot say enough good things about this book! It was SO GOOD!!! Brilliantly written, it was one of those stories that stays with you and makes you really happy. Cara and Ellery are magic and the secondary characters are great too and it’s sweet when Cara finally stretches herself to make new friends. The jerk boyfriend is so pathetic and realistic that you can’t help but be glad and be proud of her when she stands up to him and kicks him to the curb! Told from Cara’s POV, we get to experience her finding love with a woman for the first time and all the stuff that goes with finding yourself and making huge life changes in a way that is more in-depth and more personal than a story told in third person. I absolutely loved Cara and Ellery! They are so well suited for each other. I loved watching them fall in love! Cara has no idea who Ellery is so she is not dazzled by her riches and fame, therefore able to really see the true woman Ellery is. Ellery on the other hand realizes how special and genuine Cara is while giving her time to figure things out in her own time. There are some problems between them and things aren’t all smooth sailing but that’s a good thing to keep it interesting but nothing will keep true love from finding its path. This is a heartwarming and precious story that will make you say Awww and make you feel all melty and smiley, giving you many happy sighs….

Nice Romance

This was a cute story. I enjoyed reading it.
The sweet gifts were a good lead into meeting the secret admirer. I don't want to give anything away.

When her employer's company merges with a big corporation, Cara moves from Vermont to Boston to keep her job as a general admin assistant. Her boyfriend, Jared, comes with her and Cara becomes the breadwinner, footing most of the bill for their shared apartment. Even though she's never been attracted to women, she has an instant attraction to Ellery, an older sophisticated woman brought into her company as a consultant. When the two meet at a spa, Ellery begins to help Cara realize how much she needs to break free from her confining life and her unhappy relationship. The bulk of the book is about the developing relationship between Cara and Ellery.

While this twist on the age old Cinderella story could have been a winner, there are just too many credibility stretches here to sustain the story. Cara is good looking, but she has little ambition or vision for her life. Ellery is rich, accomplished and famous as the area's most eligible lesbian. Even Ellery's explanation to Cara when she asks "Why me?" seems far fetched. There might be mutual attraction and sexual chemistry, but little to convince me that these two belong together.

This book was crazy addicting. It's like...I don't even know what...that movie Ed TV maybe? I don't know, but it’s fantastic. It's told in first person from Cara Parker’s point of view, with both humor (actually funny humor) and drama. When we meet Cara, she is a 35 year old General Administrator unhappy with her stagnant life and really crappy boyfriend, but doesn't know what to do about it. Over 199 pages, Cara meets Ellery Chandler and we watch as her world is turned upside down. From the moment Cara hears a silky smooth voice saying “My name is Ellery Chandler" she is completely enchanted and begins experiencing all the same awkward emotions and doubts that all baby-gays go through:
• She was just so...impressive. I didn’t know why, but I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I wanted her approval and yet I kept acting like an idiot around her.”
• “I don’t know how to do this! I’ve only been a lesbian for like two days! It’s not like there’s an instruction manual.”
• I knew what I wanted, but I wasn’t sure how to not mess this up.

I could not stop reading this book. I kept saying “one more chapter.” I NEEDED to know what happened next; not in an action packed, blow ‘em up, zombies attacking kind of way, but in a really great story chronicling a relatively small, but enormously important, period of Cara’s life that I found incredibly interesting kind of way.

Cara and Ellery are such beautiful, magnetic characters that I truly enjoyed getting to know. I loved being in Cara’s mind through her journey; experiencing her confusion, infatuation, and self-discovery directly. I also loved witnessing Ellery’s character development through Cara eyes; we got to know Ellery right along with Cara.

There were a couple things in this story that I didn't quite get.
~ I didn't understand why Ellery’s hair was silver. I never got a feel for her age, so is she older and that's why? Or is it colored silver, because she a pretty cool chick?
~ Cara’s timeline doesn't seem to work. She’s 35. Says she’s been with Jared for 5 years. And that she’s never lived on her own: shared a room with her sister, then a roommate at college, then moved in with Jared.

I may have had a few things that I didn't quite grasp, but I still fell in love with Cara and Ellery’s story. They are so good for each other and I miss them both so very much.

Couldn’t Smile Any Bigger

I did not go to bed until 3am reading this story. I couldn’t put it down. As Much as I tried I could not. I love it. It made me smile so much with both characters. I couldn’t wait to get to the part where they both showed each other how much they loved each other in their own ways. I love it. I hope stories like this one keep coming!

Alright romance, not amazing

2 stars. This book was enjoyable but not that deep. This book was about Cara, an office assistant who meets Ellery, a consultant and executive at the company. Cara is actually with her boyfriend who she moved to Boston with from Vermont. Her boyfriend is kind of an idiot and jerk, which seems forced and not realistic at all. It is a complaint I had. It’s easy for her to leave him if he just seems like he doesn’t care, it’s a strange way to write the boyfriend, I much prefer the boyfriend at least seeming to like his girlfriend. This boyfriend is jut a jerk, it’s a part of the story that affected my review. Cara starts to think about Ellery a lot and seems to all of a sudden be a lesbian. There was very little build up to her liking girls or being with girls. It was just her boyfriend is a jerk and Ellery holds her attention more. It seems like a weird change of pace in the book.

This book had a lot of points that as I wrote this review, I did not seem to like in this book. It was very cliche and that bothers me. I read this book pretty fast, but it was not that great. I do not recommend this book.

Reasonable doubt

You have always been attracted to men until you weren't. Cara was in a relationship with Jared heading no where. Not knowing how to walk away, in walks Ellery. Better known as the world's most eligible lesbian. The attraction was instant. Wow! Now what? The buildup was in tense. Find out what happens next. Read their story. I wanted to give this book 4 1/2 *** but it wasn't an option. I was left wanting more. Hope there is a sequel.

I liked the story itself but there was too much fluff around it that it was hard to make out the actual story...everything was describes into the smallest detail... for example for a half a page a ribbon was described. Those descriptions were not essential tho the story and were just too much to have the story flow nicely. Other than that it was a nice and fun story to read with no real depth to it but enough for a quick read.

Fairytale Romance

This is the first book that I've read by Ruby Grandin, but have read most of Marian Snowe's books. Together they make a wonderful writing team who deliver a nice fairytale romance in The Secret Admirer. The character development is solid and the humor throughout the book is outstanding.

Cracking Good read

This is the sixth book of Marian’s I’ve read and enjoyed all of them, there’s a little bit of a twist that keeps you guessing for a while, but it’s a wonderful romantic story that leaves you warm and fuzzy inside,it’s an ideal book for a cold winters night in front of a fire or in my case a warm muggy night in June!!!

mmm...

The plot intrigued me. Ellery surprisingly didn't come off a a stalker, even when I thought of her being male. Since all the "coincidences" were more or less explained away, it was slightly endearing... until the came into play. It just seemed too much and made me realize there wasn't much to their actual relationship.

I wish there was less job description and more quality time in which the characters found genuine commonality between them. Sweeter low-key moments.

I've noticed I prefer stories in which there is a give and take between the two, instead of a "sweep me off my feet" marathon. Not doing so made their connection seem vapid.

It all boils down to a lack of spending extended genuine time together that would lead a plausible HEA. Ellery proclaimed her attraction stemmed from . So...

Glad there was no because there was seemingly only .

Eh, it was okay. The style of writing is not my cup of tea, but may be good for someone else.
It felt as if I was reading my junior high journal.

This had the potential to be really great. It had a predictable trope, but it's a trope I enjoy reading many times over. If this was a bit longer with a better editor and more depth it could have been really great. It often felt too fast and shallow. It tried really hard to have depth, but spent too much time on the MC's inner monologue that sounded much too immature to be from a 35 yr old.

This book is about Cara who uproots her life and moves to the big city to explore and live life, but she does so with a huge weight dragging her down ... her utterly useless and immature boyfriend. She then meets a beautiful powerful older woman named Ellery, and feelings shes never had before starts to surface. She then realizes many life lessons and tries to explore her feelings with Ellery.

Overall: could have been great, but fell short. Okay read.

This book was bad for some reasons:

First of all, in the cover has faces of people who I assume should be the two protagonists, which is awful taste because is a book, people will imagine the characters as they would like them to be.

Second thing was the fact that had me rolling my eyes because of some attitutes of these ladies.

It started pretty decent until the half of the book. I expected something else. And the reaction of the main character in the event that happened at the end was so unrealistic.

Unrealistic Romance!

Sweet story. A bit of a romantic fantasy not quite based on reality. In general, I like the characters but I do have problems with the story. First, Cara comes out a lesbian without a lot of soul searching, but she over thinks everything else. She then, accepted very expensive gifts early in a new relationship without any thought. Not realistic to me. Still a fun read.

The Secret Admirer

An interesting read and story. About a receptionist with a fancy job description whose boyfriend recents her for earning more than him but also treats her more like a maid than a girlfriend. But then she meets a woman whose come to do some consulting work for the company. Now the fun begins.
Marian Snows and Ruby Grandin the authors did a great job writing this book worth a read of you like a love story and a bit of a mystery.

Sweet and romantic

This tale of a woman discovering her sexuality with the help of a secret admirer who sends her anonymous gifts at her workplace, as well as another woman she meets over a lunch break who flirts with her and she finds she enjoys it, is incredibly sweet and romantic. It is a bit predictable in spots, but that doesn't detract from the story.

Ok but not great.

I enjoy these author's writing style, and senses of humor. But, I found the younger character too immature for a realistic relationship, especially with such a much older, worldly, successful woman.
