Case Lee #2

The New Guinea Job

Rate this book
When a mysterious client asks former Delta Force operator Case Lee to investigate a massive New Guinea gold discovery, the job quickly unravels into an incredible world of spies, terrorists, and tribal headhunters. Case—with a sense he’s being played—walks away from the entire mess. Until life-threatening events pull him back in. This time, he’s not taking any prisoners.

A murdered wife. A bounty on his head. Case lives an isolated life on the Ace of Spades, an old wooden cruiser plying the waters of the Intracoastal Waterway from Virginia to Florida. His only friends are a collection of former Delta Force teammates spread across the globe. And an enigmatic broker of clandestine information, Jules of the Clubhouse.

Case wants out. But bounty hunters and spies and shadowed players keep pulling him back in. And discover his special skills. Very special skills. If you like Jack Reacher and Mitch Rapp, you'll love this new novel from acclaimed author Vince Milam.

To tell a good tale.

It’s a simple and valid answer when the question pops up, “Why do you write?”

At the end of the day, it is to tell a good tale.

Vince Milam has lived all over the world, traipsing through the Amazon, Congo, and Papua New Guinea—all the while demonstrating bourbon has medicinal qualities. Raised in Texas, he lives in the mountainous West where he proves—annually—that God doesn’t want us driving on snow. He relishes great reads, fine trout streams, family, old friends, and—especially—writing fast-paced thrillers that keep you up at night.

This is an action-packed story of a former Delta Force operator and his closest brothers , whose lives become melded during battle. Each lives their own lives but are always ready to help one another if needed. Case works by investigating jobs he finds on the dark web, using his experience and craftiness to make good money working for others. The new case finds him in New Guinea, checking out groups that are there to seeking a newly found 'gold' area. During this he becomes very aware that there are Russians,Chinese,British and others involved, and when a known CIA agent meets him in the village,he realizes that some other 'game' is being played.
When Case feels threatened he calls to his 'brothers', and with military force they try to find out what is going on, as the CIA agent is kidnapped, and the head of Defense asks for his help in getting her back.
An interesting look into how different people use their experiences to live, and how it effects the people in their lives. A great adventure through different countries, with the bond formed in the fight for America's safety highlighted by Case, Bo and Catch.
An excellent book for those who like stories by Brad Thor and Tom Clancy. I received the ARC of this story from the author, Vince Milam, publisher Kindle Press and Netgalley, enabling my reading of this story and the ability to produce my honest review, for which I thank them.

Familiar tale, but well written, of a former Delta Force operator, now a private contractor, being co-opted by the CIA to track down terrorists in New Guinea. Enough action to keep the junkies interested. Short enough to not get bogged down with useless prose.

Kindle Unlimited. Part of a series.

Good military fiction sequel to "The Suriname Job" featuring Case Lee, a former Delta Spec Ops with a million dollar bounty on his head. He's currently living on his boat freelancing investigations for a Swiss concern while watching his back. He accepts an assignment to recon a gold strike in New Guinea and reports back on a bad mix of spies and terrorists. He and two Delta teammates end up returning on a non official hostage rescue that severely test their hard won spec ops skills. My only complaint centers on Case Lee's lengthy sub plots bonding with his former Delta Force teammates in the Pacific Northwest and Montana that add nothing to the plot or the pace. More explosive page turning action, less lengthy introspection!

A masterpiece in the second book of Case Lee series. Case is unwillingly drawn in a gold mine in New Guinea, and with him his brother in arms former Delta Force- where powerful countries have claim and investments, a careful ploy, unnerving and hair splitting situations, natives and dangerous twists and turns. Exciting and recommended!

This second book in the series finds Case Lee in New Guinea, looking at several camps ostensibly looking for gold in the jungle. Supposedly a prospector found gold then disappeared, and Russian, British, Chinese, and Indonesian camps are there looking for gold.

Meanwhile, the bounty on Case and his fellow former Delta Force members is still in place and they seek to dig up who put the hit on them.

Case gets a bad feeling about the job, and heads out to find out why. He wanders around a bit with his friends, beats up some neo nazi types, and then heads back into New Guinea with his fellow DF guys for personal reasons.

This book meanders a bit, with more "hanging out with the bros while everyone tries to set Case Lee up with a girl" than the previous book. Personally I would prefer to see more of him doing things than just being with his friends, and the neo-nazi stuff felt kind of forced, like the author knew he needed some action because nothing really has been dramatic or significant up to this point except a single arrow wound.

The book is well written and keeps your attention but sometimes barely, particularly the hippie metaphysical ramblings of one of the Delta Force Bros.

The Case Lee adventure continues as Case is contracted to investigate an alleged gold strike in the jungles of New Guinea. He makes new friends and enemies as he checks out the local town and the different mining camps. As he leaves the jungles he encounters an old acquaintance, and through her discovers that he has been working for the American CIA. Despite his revulsion at being played, he is eventually forced to return to New Guinea with a team of his Delta Force buddies to rescue his CIA acquaintance who has been kidnaped by the Russians. The main characters are developed in detail and provide a colorful selection of weird. The plot is somewhat predictable, but the action is described in clear and compelling terms. It's worth reading the book again to revisit the many colorful characters. This book stands out in a genre that is overpopulated.

Another masterwork from Vince Milam

Idaho author Vince Milam retains as much mystery about his background as he imbues in his supernatural mystery thrillers. From his resume, only the following offers a few facts: ` I live in the Intermountain West where soaring mountains and vast high deserts give a person plenty of room to think. I've lived and worked in over twenty-five countries around the globe, am a certified Wellness Coach, have a coterie of dear friends and family that provide succor and support, and have an old dog that is also a best buddy. I have an affinity for characters of all stripes, and strive to bring out the uniqueness of my literary protagonists.'

Vince states `All in all, life is a joy and I am so very lucky to be a part of this world we live in' and yet his new novel continues along the path of his series he titles A Case Lee Novel.. The question arises, `can a man so positive in this manner of approaching life grasp the darkness of evil?' Now Vince enters a new series – the Case Lee Novels of which this is Book 2 THE NEW GUINEA JOB and the answer, fortunately for his readers, is an `absolutely Yes'. Vince ‘s manner of conducting a suspense filled thriller with overtones of Spirituality is refreshing to say the least. His language grows more eloquent with each new book and his ability to retain memories of the early books of the series enhances this story – but the book is quite easily a stand alone novel, so well crafted has Vince made the plot. Vince informs us ‘I believe it’s my best work to date. I did have one large leverage point—over a year spent in the wilds of Papua New Guinea provided a palette almost unmatched for a story setting. The texture of the place as a backdrop—flora, fauna, weather, tribesmen, etc. – is hard to beat.’

The story is condensed as follows: ‘When a mysterious client asks former Delta Force operator Case Lee to investigate a massive New Guinea gold discovery, the job quickly unravels into an incredible world of spies, terrorists, and tribal headhunters. Very special skills. .’

As Vince states on his site,’ In addition to Case Lee, the tale includes Bo, Catch, Marcus, Mom, CC, and Jules of the Clubhouse. Toss in the director of CIA clandestine operations (she reminds me of Judi Dench in the recent 007 movies), Catch’s girlfriend Willa, tribal warriors, the Russian and British secret services—a wide and fun cast of characters. It is chocked full of action, angst, humor, love, and personal growth.’

Vince Milam is now recognized as one of the major writers of suspenseful novels writing today. Polished to a fare-thee-well, this novel is his best yet.

A large gold find worth billions has been discovered in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. The geologist who made the discovery has gone missing, but that is not why Case Lee, former Delta force operation and current contract private investigator is there. He was hired by his company, Global Resolutions, to find out who all is there and getting in on the action. The Russians, Chinese, British, and Indonesians are the players, as are the people who hired Case, who he does not know their identity. Case hires a local tribal member, Luke, to guide him through the jungle. Luke seems to be the tribal equivalent of a special ops agent.
They finish their mission and Case discovers he has been played, and discovers who really hired him, and he is pissed. He wants no more to do with the situation and he heads back to the States. It's time for him to visit his former black ops brothers and see how they are faring. We find Catch and Bo in the Pacific Northeast. Catch has found the love of his life and appears to be settling down. Bo is partaking of the advantages of the legalization of a certain plant. He is getting back to nature and in touch with his inner organic self.
Case then travels to Montana to visit Marcus who has settled into the life of a rancher. He finds a situation there, and Marcus wants him to stay out of it. When his sometimes girlfriend, Irene, gets involved, Case feels he needs to take care of it. If it were always so simple.
Case goes back to the east coast to visit his mother and his developmentally disabled sister. Case's love for his mother and sister is pure and he would do anything to protect them. Case and his buddies have a contract on their heads, leftover from their special ops days. A million dollars apiece makes them especially wanted. Case would really like to know who has the contract on them, and until he finds out who it is, he cannot settle down to a normal life.
Case gets in touch again with Jules, who is an independent intelligence operative who seems to have all information about any espionage throughout the world. Case seems to trust her, but the reader is left to think maybe she would double cross him for the right price.
Case gets a chance to find out who has the contract on his head and he goes on another mission. The twist and turns of this story will keep the pages turning and the heart thumping. I really felt the need to visit Bo's favorite pharmacy, Tranquil Waters Dispensary, after finishing this book.

I received a free, advance ecopy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review. Wow! We enter Papua New Guinea and a world of spooks, terrorists, and headhunters. Case Lee and his Delta brothers have a price on their heads and don’t know who put it there. Someone always thwarts Case Lee’s efforts whenever he tries to find out who it really is. Case and all his Delta brothers are complex characters with lots of baggage. We see a kind, gentle, caring, and loving side of Case as he interacts with his mother and his developmentally disabled sister. Everyone is in search of gold and the archaeologist who found it is missing. Case has been sent by his employer to find out everything he can about this gold discovery and who is hunting for it. His boss is kidnapped and Case and some of his Delta brothers go back to New Guinea to rescue her. This is a very well written thriller with an amazing plot and excellent character development. Full of suspense and the action never quits. Couldn’t put it down. Vince Milam is a very descriptive author. ‘The New Guinea Job’ is a very descriptive, entertaining, and enjoyable read with memorable characters. This book is well worth the read and I look forward to reading more from Vince Milam in the future.

Retired Delta Force operator Case Lee lives by the rule that good should be nurtured and protected; evil should be “taken out with the garbage”. He is not a man you want to cross. In author Vince Milam’s newest Case Lee thriller, The New Guinea Job, we see Lee, and Milam, at the top of their game. It’s an on-the-edge-of your seat adventure with spies, jungle heat, head hunters, gold fever, memorable supporting characters, and enough double dealing to make your eyes cross. Yet, Milam doesn’t resort to the cheap shots when it comes to Case Lee’s character. He is humanly faceted, much more than a well-armed super-hero. Case Lee hurts, loves, grieves, and ponders the cosmic questions of all men of substance. But make no mistake. When it’s time to take care of business, one thing is for sure: Case Lee and his blood brothers from Delta Force WILL get the job done. The New Guinea Job is a great read. Immensely enjoyable. Mystery, Spy intrigue, Adventure, personal relationships and more

I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.
I'm giving this book a solid four star. The reason I'm not giving it a five star because a couple of times I felt the flow of the story was a bit off. But that might be only my own reaction.
All things considered the book is well worth reading.
The author did a great job in describing the various characters and their interactions with each other. The sort of camaraderie that exist with people that have served together in combat situations and completely trust their lives in the hands of each other. In some cases the characters are a bit over the top but still realistic enough that the story is believable.
It also shows the different approach that has been taken between the four friend trying to adjust back to a normal everyday live.
The descriptions of Papua New Guinea scenery, local characters and Natives gives the reader a very visual picture without overdoing it.

An action packed thriller that was fun to read. It starts out in New Guinea as ex-delta force Case was hired to scope out the players in the crazy gold rush happening way out in the middle of nowhere in New Guinea. I thought his trek was entertaining and so descriptive I could imagine I was there too. After scoping out the players in the woods he then ends up in "town" to finish his report for "this easy job". Of course that is when Case figures out something is up. Case finishes this job (or so he thinks) and goes to visit his Delta force buddies. I loved Case's buddies and a few of the others he meets along the way . They all were a total hoot. But Case ends up drawn back to New Guinea and ending the book with a bang. I loved how descriptive the places and the characters were that I could easily image it all. Just a great book that kept me entertained. Step aboard the Sally, an old wooden beaten up vessel and your the jungle of PNG

Of you are already a Lee Case fan then you know that the first novel in the series is quite an introduction to the five retired Delta Force operators. All three locales of the trilogy are actual former stomping grounds of the author, Vince Milam. He knew and worked among the native populations, knew of the clashes both political and the insurrections, the illegal exploits and the depths of both the bad guys and the good ones. It is this flavor of validity that keeps the pages turning. In The New Guinea Job the action never slows, danger never relents. But there is a Montana event that becomes a solo job featuring Lee Case. I thought this padt, sort of as an aside very interesting and satisfying in the outcome and the only bullet damage was to a tire!

When you have a huge bounty hanging over your head, life somehow becomes precious. And you come to appreciate the people around you more. Like Bo. And Catch.
And CC.
However, Case Lee is still a former Delta Force operator and is not taking things laying low or down.
Which how he ended up in Kiunga, New Guinea.
A major gold strike is on the cards and international interest is high. Case has to check it out.
Except he is also being played and became aware of it.
Then lives became at stake. All hell threatened to burst loose.
And does.
Author Vince Milam is an accomplished action thriller writer that goose any reader into pimples for the reality of the scenes that he calls up before your very eyes.
Enjoy.

Review of The New Guinea Job

The second book in the Case Lee series was very interesting, because the author understands the mind set needed to be a Retired Special Forces Operator. Case is sent to New Guinea by his employer to find out what the Russians, and other countries wanted from this area. The storyline involved the Mind set of today's Clandestine Operations by Putin and The CIA and British Secret Service. Unfortunately Case is the only active member of his old Delta Force group and he's living life on the edge and on occasion has to have his former partners work with him to keep their families safe.

The 1st and last quarters of the book take place in New Guinea with great descriptions of the jungle. The middle half of the book takes place in the USA as Case goes to visit his former Delta Force “brothers” . It’s interesting to see how their previous jobs have shaped them into who they are and how much they love and depend on each other. They support one another in a jungle rescue with great risk. Was hard to put this book down! I received an advance copy of this book from the author via Net Galley in exchange for an unbiased review.

Friends willing to fight and even die for their friends. That is the basis of The New Guinea Job. When Case Lee travels to New Guinea for a job, things don't seem quite right. Back in the States, he visits his Delta brothers, Chance and Bo. When things go wrong the three men travel back to New Guinea to set them right. A beautifully crafted story of the love fighting men have for their brothers in arms. Vince Milam brings an amazing story to readers everywhere.

New Guinea Job

I love the banter between the brothers, funny at times but mostly serious. Serious action. The relationship between Case and his sister is precious, the sign of a real man. Case Lee is a badass in a good way. He has a moral compass which tempers his violent side but he can get the job done when its called for. I would definitely like him having my back. Bring on the next one!

Action packed from the very first page. Normally that alone would get me to love it. However there is a big part of the book that has nothing to do with New Guinea. The time is spent with Delta Force friends. That is not a bad thing but seemed too much time spent establishing the closeness of the guys. The New Guinea story starts and ends the book. I enjoyed the intrigue and action that those parts of the book offered.

I read this book on NetGalley.

Get settled, this may take a rewarding while!

It is rare to read a book in this genre which uses such beautiful language. Whilst the story was gripping and, at times, suspense ridden, the central characters carried the story. At times hilarious, especially the dialogue of the character up a tree in a VW wagon (you have to read it to understand), yet still leaving the reader with a sense of gratification that such warriors do exist. Look forward to the next encounter.

Even though I couldn't quite give it five stars, I can see why so many readers did. Vince Milam gives the impression of being an insider on the world of covert ops. The mindset, the jargon and the treachery. It's a novel full of action, suspense and an ongoing story. The chemistry between the former Delta operatives feels real. I couldn't quite give it five stars, but I'll be buying, "The Suriname Job" today.

Too much killing & mysticism

I like the Case Lee character, but to my taste the killing parts of the book are toooo graphic to my taste.
Also the Bo rambling philosophical stories become boring after 2-3 of them.
But I will look forward to the end and how the bounty story turns out.

Great first half of book, then slides into the usual rushed and fanciful ending. In this case, four good guys wipe out thirty ISIS like terrorists and their 12 or 15 Russian special forces allies. Who knew they were coming, by the way. So to recap, thats 4 good guys takes out 45 or so bad guys who were waiting in ambush for the 4 to arrive. Thats only realistic if you are twelve years old.

Adventure, Memorable Characters, Satisfying Endings

These book are so engaging, heroes that conquer evil, yet each with his own unique story. I keep coming back for more. The violence is a result of the people who are are angry, greedy, insecure, a means to an end, but not with relish and shocking grossness. A nice balance of, ethics, heart, and getting a dirty job done.

Number 2 done and dusted....really enjoying this series great characters well built and defined by their collective past...
The litmus test of a good book for me is when reading, the story plays like a movie in my mind , the writing is descriptive enough to stimulate my imagination..
Thanks Vince great work and look forward to continuing the series.

A definite improvement over the first book. Better pacing, tighter plot, more time spent in the title country. The short, punctuating sentences really work for the action scenes. You are completely engrossed in what's going on.

The only thing I'm not sure about is how this book helps moved the overarching series plot forward.

Intense

Retired warriors have their own way of communicating. Their dialogue is unusual: short meaningful sentences that are immediately understood by each other, but not always by others. Maybe that is what the bond of warrior brothers is all about and it certainly reveals itself in this exciting, well crafted story. Looking forward to the next episode.

Amazing read.

Not enough adjectives to describe the ebb and flow that this book will take you through. High emotions and high action course through each and every page. My second book in the series and I can’t wait for the next. Vince Milan is a top rate author. I’m so glad I happened on him in Amazon books.

Case Lee and his team are very talented at what they do, but for every step forward they make, they seem to make two steps back. And in the end, much of their goal is unfinished (leaving material for the next job in the series.) I hope the next one is in a better setting than this one; anyway, I rate it 4.6 stars.
