Astrid doesn’t argue when she’s exiled to the wilds of northern Canada to stay on her long-lost aunt’s ranch. It seems like as good a place as any for both her and Folly to heal after their horrific accident. Especially since Folly is angrier and more dangerous than ever. But life in the country is full of surprises; real-life cowboys, a failing archery team that needs her help, and a funny horse named Red who would rather nap than work. The path to fixing Folly isn’t easy and as Astrid grows increasingly terrified of her volatile horse she realizes she’ll need to reach out to the people who care about her if she wants to come out of this situation alive.

ahhh this book was great!! Sadly, it took me 9 months to get through it, but I was reading many other books and it couldn’t stick with me well enough. But the last quarter of the book was so captivating, that suddenly I found myself excited to dive back into Astrid’s world again! I think this book was so informational and actually gave me a new perspective on riding and horses! Astrid deserved this get-away, but now I’m scared for her to return home. In some ways I felt like everything just fit together too well in the end, but I was still happy for everyone and I could bare to think of someone ending up sad! This series incorporates two of my favorite things: horses and archery. I have never been an archer but this book makes me fall in love with it all over again, while still being focused on Astrid’s journey through the equine community. I always feel so awkward to read horse books because there is such a horrible stereotype about “horse girls” and it feels weird to read these books in school. I know i shouldn’t be ashamed of it, but I hope that someday these books can be recognized in the same way a book about basketball or dancing would be. I actually have no idea what will happen in the next book, but luckily I got the whole rest of the series to enjoy this summer!

I thought the first book was good, but no the second was even better. My most favourite was the development with Astrid and how she grew into herself. Not many books make me rear up and I was bawling at the end. This book has some beautiful sad moments and I will forever cherish with me that's how much I've been impacted.
So far this book is my favourite and I plan to read the entire series but I think this book will continue to be my most favourite. This one has a special place in my heart. What a fantastic read, you must buy it.
This was a great book and I appreciated all the information about watching a horses body language. And to realize what the little nuances mean. I rode horses just for fun when I was young and never had a lesson so this series is teaching me a great deal. Many thanks to Ms. McKay for her great teaching.
I really enjoyed this story with Astrid as she visits her aunt’s ranch. There is a very interesting section where one of the ranch trainers teaches Astrid about a natural and slow way of training that involves horse psychology. That is well worth the reading of this book alone.
I chose this book as I saw a chance that more night be garnered than mere giggles, more importantly an ability for my own growth. Me McKay writes much more between the lines than most. She is a teacher AND an author. Lynn Porter
I had expected cutting horses, loved this book and the way Justin worked with Folly though! I really enjoyed Red and his oddness! Great storyline even if it was meant for teenagers!
The series was well written. The story moves along at a good pace. The characters are believable. The storyline is interesting and keeps you wanting more.
What a great read. I very much liked Book 1, and liked this tome even more. Excellent storyline, well-defined characters, a lot of them, but each a pleasure to explore. Can't wait to read on, sooo good!
Astrid is staying now at her aunt's ranch in Vancouver, Canada. She has some repairing to do after an accident; her with facial injuries, and Folly the mare who was also injured. Astrid learns there are many good things in her new community: real cowboys, an archery team that can use her help, and a new funny horse named Red, who likes to nap all the time. This is a very enjoyable story and there are several horse training tips as well as mending relationships with others. Highly recommend for young adults, too.
